Lost in the forest
A very nice place, located in a remote area that can only be reached via a shuttle service provided by the property itself. The service is very efficient and takes you to this accommodation set in a valley shaped by rivers and surrounded by dense forests. The rooms are very simple but have everything you need. The onsen is also open to local residents, creating a magical moment of quiet sharing with the local people—truly special! Dinner was carefully prepared and of great quality, especially considering this was the most affordable accommodation of our entire Kumano Kodo trip. This accommodation comes before the most challenging stage of the entire route. Unfortunately, due to bad weather, we decided to go to Shingu instead. The only downside of the accommodation is the shuttle schedule: if someone wants to start walking at 7:00 AM to avoid bad weather later in the day (as in our case), it’s not possible, which can be limiting. The bus runs at 7:40 am and reaches Koguchi at 8:10. It would also be helpful to receive advice from the hosts on whether to tackle the stage depending on the weather. For travelers unfamiliar with the area, this can be quite difficult to assess.

Convenience of public bus and morning shuttle really helped us as we had to change our plans, both for hiking to from Hongu to Koguchi, and for having the traditional river boat trip canceled due to rain and high water in the river. If we had hiked the Koguchi stretch, we would have appreciated more shuttle or bus options and flexibility.

物超所值的飯店

A bit out of the way but Free Shuttle helps
This place is not in Koguchi but nearer to Shingu City. However, they provide a free shuttle in Koguchi but you will have to call them (using a pay phone) for them to pick you up. The ride to the accommodation seemed endless (30 mins) but we arrived safely (raining heavily). The check in process was fast and we like the free shuttle to Shingu the next morning. The room is huge and comfortable and the onsen were fantastic (both indoor and outdoor). Although we had shared toilets, we were never fighting for space or privacy. The food is alright. Nothing to shout at but adequate to eat. Laundry was free with detergent provided (definitely a plus).

Great option for walkers to Koguchi
The shuttle pickup was seamless picking us all up at 3pm as promised. The rooms were large and a nice little indoor balcony overlooking the forest outside. The onsen were great with the outdoor option especially good. The restaurant was disappointing as the food was OK but the service was not very good as the man running the restaurant was not a happy man.

Worth the detour
Great hotel/onsen that although might detract a bit from the pilgrimage atmosphere of the Kumano Kodo, provides excellent accomodation, food and onsen. The added bonus are the beautiful views of the Kumano river from the shuttle van on the road from Koguchi, which was one of my favourite parts of the trip.

Comfortable stay with amazing dinner
Quite far from the Koguchi trailhead, so make sure you catch the shuttle, though they are very thorough in making sure all their guests are picked up. Even the views from the shuttle ride were very interesting. The place is like a spa hotel, with a large onsen with indoor and outdoor sections. There's also a laundry room which you can use for free. I recommend getting the meal option, in part because there's not really any outside options close by (though you can buy instant noodles, etc. near the reception), and because the food they provide at their restaurant is absolutely delicious, totally worth the stay there. Very friendly staff too.
