Hongu Tea Farm Guesthouse

Chanoka Tea Aroma Inn is a small rural guesthouse with a local tea plantation in the greater Hongu area. The owner inherited it from her grandparents and created the inn to share Japanese tea culture with others from around the world. Guests can choose from 2 rooms, Japanese or western-style, for up to just 5 guests total. Meals feature home-grown vegetables and tea-related dishes unique to tea farms. Guests can even choose a plan that includes a tea aroma experience. Although located away from the center of Hongu and onsen area, the owner offers free shuttle pickup from Hongu Taisha-mae bus stop. The inn is excellent for those walking the Kumano Kodo and interested in rural Japanese life.

What a find!

This place was spectacular. A little out of the main Hongu area, we were shuttled to and from the guesthouse. Jordan the owner went out of his way to look after us. Even taking us down to the outdoor Onsen on our first evening. The facilities were very clean comfortable, and had amazing views of the river and mountains. The area around the home worth 1/2 day to explore. The food was locally grown, often organic and home cooked. The best food I had on the whole trip. Would highly recommend this place.

Lovely tea house stay

We had a great stay at this mountain-top teahouse. The hosts were very kind and accommodating, picking us up from Hongu Taisha-Mae bus stop (only 6 mins drive) and dropping us off the next day. Our room with ensuite WC was in a separate annexe from the main house (where you go to shower & dine). The room was clean and tidy. The home-made meals were fabulous - many ingredients were either grown by the hosts/their neighbours, and all were beautifully prepared. We were even treated to their own tea! Would highly recommend.

Amazing

The food was the best and most unique food we’ve ever eaten in our trip to Japan. Jordan and his wife made an effort and cooked for us two meals and a bento box, all vegan and delicious. The tea was fantastic as well. The rooms were clean and with a great view to the mountains. Jordan also picked us up from a close point on the trail and drove us back to the trail in the morning. Also, by his suggestion, he took us to a local Onsen which was a great experience. Highly recommended.

Unique and memorable

Jordan and Notsumi were absolutely inspiring and exceptional hosts. Jordan’s attention to detail and inventive recipes with home grown produce were outstanding and will remain in our memories for a long time. The views from the room, dining area and balcony were incredible. We really appreciated being able to use the dryer, as well as Jordan picking us up and dropping us at the trailhead the next morning. Could not recommend more highly.

Review for Kumano no megumi

Although we booked Chanoka Tea Aroma Inn, we ended up staying at Kumano no Megumi due to host illness and rebooking. Our host was exceptionally kind, the room was comfortable and our meals (including homemade plum wine, pickles, fresh sashimi, beautiful bento boxes) were all delicious and meticulously prepared. Thank you very much!

Delicious food

We had contact via chat about our time of arrival and were picked up by a minivan, this all went very smoothly. The rooms are fine with a separate bathroom in the other house. The reason why you want to be here is the fantastic food. Very extensive and the flavors were delicious. The next day we were even taken to the village further away, very friendly!

BEST STAY IN JAPAN

The BEST experience at Kumano Kodo was staying at the Chanoka Tea Aroma Inn. Well located with a convenient shuttle. Welcoming stay and service and the BEST food if had in my whole trip to Japan. Sophisticated yet local, with rice from neighbour Mr. X, and fish from neighbour Ms. Y. My favorite stay of my whole trip to Japan. Highly, highly recommend.

Relaxing

Jordan picked us up in Hongu which was a nice benefit after walking in pouring rain the last 2 hours. The room was nice and warm with beautiful views of the river and mountains. The room has a toilet and sink in the room, but showers are in the main house (walk across the driveway). Meals are in the beautiful main house and are chef level with local ingredients. We enjoyed the meals (and meal time) very much. The owner will drive to onsens or anywhere in the area (one drop off/pick up daily). It was a great way to end our Kumano walk and we really loved Hongu.
