Description
Kumano Kodo Homes
Chikatsuyu Cherry Garden “Sakura-no-Sono” is a set of Japanese houses on the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route on the west side of Chikatsuyu village, the first buildings on the left when entering the village. Both homes are lovingly maintained and elegantly decorated. One room is in the "Family House", the same home as the family lives, offering a homestay style. The neighboring house or "Annex" has two guestrooms with a lofty sitting area. Next to the houses are terraced fields planted with cherry trees, from which the name of the accommodation is derived. From this vantage point guests have a view of the village.

Would give 6 stars if we could!
Shin and his wife made us very welcome. The 'Annexe' is actually a stand alone delightful, modern Japanese house. Charmingly decorated, warm and cosy. Shin clearly delights in cooking for guests and his meals were a highlight of our trip. The house is also very easy to find if walking the Kodo from Tenabe.

Amazing hospitality!
This house is one-party per night type of accommodation, so since I was by myself, I had the entire property to myself, truly a luxury! The place is so cozy, filled with memorabilia from the host's travels. They received me so warmly and gave me such good meals (the best bento on all of my kodo days!) They spent so much time calling people to figure out bus schedules for me the next day, truly the best hospitality I've ever experienced.

Magical stay at Cherry Garden
We were warmly welcomed after a long day of hiking from Takijiri, and enjoyed a cold beverage on the roof deck overlooking town while dinner was being prepared. The hosts could not have been nicer, and the location proximate to Chikatsuyu was a bonus. Thank you for having us and we would love to come back again!

Lovely, restful stay.
This place is in a perfect location for hiking the Kumano Kodo - literally seconds from the trail and 4 mins from the Chikatsuyu bus stop. Our host was very friendly, the annex we stayed in was comfortable, warm, and it was wonderful to have the whole place to ourselves! Dinner was delicious and plentiful. Would have preferred an eastern breakfast to a western one, but it was still very tasty and prepared with a lot of care. A Lovely experience and would recommend to any weary travellers on the Kumano Kodo!

Wonderful stay!
We had a wonderful night's stay at Sakura-no-Sato. We arrived very wet from walking and the hosts were so kind in greeting us and helping us (and our clothes) get dry. The house is beautiful and spacious, spotlessly clean and with all mod cons but in a traditional setting. The futons and bedding were extremely comfortable, the bathroom and shower spotless and modern. The dinner, breakfast and lunch were all delicious. Our hosts were very welcoming and made our stay so relaxing and enjoyable. Thank you. We would have liked to have stayed longer :)

The best guest house of my lifetime
Sakura-no-Sono is definitely the best guest house I have ever stayed! The house is spacious with a window view of cherry trees ( would love to stay again during the sakura season!) The hosts are very welcoming, from the beginning of greeting us, to prepare super delicious dinner and breakfast, and they even saw us off with some traditional Japanese ceremony! I cannot say enough how awesome the stay is, but would like to recommend this place for 100% sure!

An unforgettable experience.
Arriving in Chikatsuyu I glanced up from the trail to see a welcome message with my name on. I rang the doorbell as instructed and a very friendly guy (I wish I’d got his name) welcomed me. He showed me around the Annex with the loveliest bedroom with garden views and then welcomed me with refreshing iced tea and crackers. I immediately felt right at home. Dinner was exquisite as was a truly wonderful breakfast which was extremely delicious. I couldn’t fault anything about my stay. It was perfect.

Best ever
Three weeks in Japan and staying at numerous places and this was absolutely the best by far. Everything was beyond expectation and if we ever come back we will definitely stay more than one day just to enjoy everything from the food, house and the great service that our host and hostess gave. If there were six stars to give I would have given them to Sakura-no-sono.

Cozy and nice Japanese traditional house
We are super happy with our one night stay here after a long day hike. The owner put a sign at the door to welcome us. They are super friendly and helpful. The dinner and breakfast was absolutely delicious. Even thought it was a traditional japense house, but the bed was super comfortable (does not feel hard). The house itself is super cozy bright and nice with a fully equipped kitchen. The supermarket is just 10 mins away and the bus stop to Hosshinmen Oji is 3 mins away.

Amazing stay at Sakura-no-Sono
We had the most amazing stay! The location was right off the Kumano Kodo trail with a sign that was easy to find. Everything about the stay was more than we could have asked for or expected. The hosts were so friendly and helpful, including helping to show us how to tie and wear the yukata. They made us feel so welcome in their guest house. The dinner, breakfast and lunch were some of the best we had during our travels. The accommodations were homey and comfortable, with a nice shower and even a massage chair which was nice after long day of walking. I cannot say enough nice things about our stay with Shin-san and Chia-san, it was a highlight of our entire trip in Japan! I would recommend this to anyone traveling along the Kumano Kodo trail.

Fantastic stay
Sakura-no-Sono was our favourite stay on the trail. Chie and Shin are wonderful hosts, we loved Chie's accomplished cooking, Shin went above and beyond to help me retrieve a left-behind jacket, the accomodation is superbly comfortable (a 2-bedroom fully-furnished fully-equipped annex to the hosts' own home is available for the exclusive use of each party) and the village itself is in a very pretty location next to a river.

Superb hospitality and food, memorable stay in Chikatsuyu
I arrived very tired after walking from Takijiri and found a sign with my name and flag right before the entrance. The annex is basically an entire house for you, with a wonderful living room. You can consider it a deluxe Ryokan. I really want to thank Shin for his incredible cooking skills and hospitality. Definitely recommend and I would come back.

My boyfriend and I had the best stay at Chikatsuyu Cherry Garden! The dinner was fantastic, the room was nice, there were yukatas, and there was a washing machine. The breakfast was at a cafe very close by and was also good. We had a lunch bento as well for our next day of hiking and it too was delicious. We would recommend it, and especially the dinner! The owner was very nice too.

absolutely loved staying at Cherry Garden
This was my favorite place we stayed on the whole trail! Right off the trail, amazingly comfortable futons, the sweetest hosts, hot bath, lovely yukatas, great dinner, even a massage chair...heaven after a long day of hiking. Breakfast was at a cafe just down the road. The hosts were incredibly kind, made sure we were getting on the right bus in the morning and even drove us the two blocks to the bus stop because it was raining. I wished I had an extra night there!

Guest house in Chikatsuyu
Another excellent guesthouse with a view of the river. Beautiful garden seating area just as you come off the Kumano trail overlooking the river and town. Beautiful room with a scroll of a hawk which was interesting since two hawks were flying overhead when we first arrived. So nice to have a printed sign at the front steps greeting us by name and made us feel so welcome. The evening meal was very good and our host made special arrangements with the cafe serving breakfast in town for our early departure and even walked a short way there with us in the morning so we would get a good start. I am sorry I was so tired from hiking I left the table early that evening and missed my favorite dessert of vanilla ice cream. But alas, all was well with the fantastic packed lunch which included fried chicken, a meat crouton, rice balls, veg......it was packed and delicious. Very helpful and friendly host in a beautiful annex building which felt very warm and welcoming. We loved it and the location right on the trail just out of the trees but away from the main road. Quiet and obviously the hawks liked it too. Thank you

Cozy & Friendly
The guesthouse was very cute and the couple took great pride in welcoming us. The location is perfect; you come down out of the mountains and the guesthouse is literally the first building on the left when you enter the village. The guest room was very comfortable and traditional. We even got to pick out our own yukata to borrow for the evening from a beautiful selection available. Dinner was lovely with careful attention to detail and really delicious food. Lunch the next day was also a treat with delicious fried chicken, salmon, edamame, pickles, and rice. My only suggestion for improvement would be the breakfast. Japan has such nice traditional breakfast options available, and the guesthouse is so lovely, it was a shame to have to walk to a nearby cafe and eat a western style breakfast of eggs and toast. I would much have preferred to stay in the guesthouse and have a more traditional meal. Overall, it was worth the expense and a very nice stay!

Chikatsuyu Review
The location was excellent, right on the Kumano Kodo trail. We arrived after a long 8 hour walk, wet and tired, our hosts had a lovely sign outside welcoming us and then proceeded to take all our wet clothes and shoes to be dried, run us a bath, lay out fresh kimonos and made hot tea! An evening meal and lunch box was included, both of which were excellent. Breakfast was at a local café just a few minutes away. I can highly recommend this beautiful guest house, spacious, great hosts, perfect location. Thank you!

Great place and great owners
The guesthouse is big and you have a confortable common space for reading or share time with others guests. I was alone but I could enjoy the place anyway. The room is big and has a way out to the backyard where you can hear the little river running trough the mountain. The location is great, just in the middle of the official route. The owners were very kind and help me with the next day plan. And the supper.. it was the best dinners of my 20 days in Japan, by far. I took the lunch box that was very good as well.

A true lesson in hospitality and kindness
Our family hiked from Takijiri-Oji in non-stop rain and arrived at Sakura-no-sono drenched and tired. A sign with our names on it welcomed us and it was not long until we met Shin-san and Chia-san who promptly settled us into magnificent lodgings while helping us dry our packs and our shoes. The guest house was the best place we stayed in Japan and the meal they prepared us was better than the Michelin starred restaurants we visited in Kyoto and Nara. We learned so much from our hosts that we hope to employ when guests come to stay with us. A truly unforgettable experience! I hope that life allows us to return one day.

Highly recommended! Great homestay!~
1. Location Just siturated on the trail of kumano kodo, and is very eye catching and easy to find! 2. Food Very delicious food prepared by the host lady. They would also provide bento for us (who would continue hiking in kumano kodo) in the morning! 3. Room Since we are the only guests that night, we can enjoy a very spacious house (separated from the host family) ourselves. The house accommodates up to 5 people with a large living room and fully equipped open kitchen. very suitable for family and friends. Overall, highly recommended homestay if you plan to stay in chikatsuyu.

A Real Gem...
Well, I would say this this inn was the highlight of accommodation along the Nakahechi Trail for me. The host is very welcoming and speaks good English. A well appointed bedroom, with a comfortable futon and soft pillow. I slept peacefully. Undoubtedly, the dinner time meal experience is something I will remember for a long time. Seated at a communal table, fellow travelers and I got to learn more about each other and make connections, which I think is important while walking a pilgrimage route like the Nakahechi. The food was amazing- traditional Japanese fare that sparked conversation and enthusiasm for eating! As an added convenience, there are three bicycles available for you to use to explore, or to make a quick journey to a nearby supermarket. A very nice place to stay while doing the Nakahechi Trail through Chikastuyu, I certainly recommend staying here! Thank you for having me...

Come home to family!
Charming three-generation family welcome you off the trail to their home - which is actually 3 buildings. I had TWO huge rooms in the main house...and private use of a very modern, big bathroom. Guests have dinner in another of the buildings - where my friends stayed in two different rooms. Dinner is kind of all the guests together time - you may share a table with strangers. But the family stay on hand during dinner to chat and make sure everything is ok - and the food - both home cooked and ordered in meal boxes was AMAZING! My only regret was that we never got to see the house in sunshine, because it's on the shady side of the valley and we arrived late afternoon and left early for the 7.30 am bus. My friend left her wallet at the guest house and the family were so sweet to contact Kumano Travel and make sure I could pick it up later. Thankyou!!!

Loved it.
We really enjoyed our stay. Shin and Chie made us feel very welcome. They were helpful but discreet, giving us our own space. Shin's English is pretty good, way better than my Japanese! Convenient location, first house you get to (as you enter Chikatsuyu on the trail). Bath is short and deep, pretty much standard - it does the job. We went and used the onsen in the village on our second day, to try it out, but our bath was fine. Futons were comfortable. Dinners were hearty and satisfying. Breakfasts at the local cafe, bit so-so. But a couple of doors up from there is a coffee roaster run by a young guy, he's very friendly and does good coffee.

Lovely accommodation
We really enjoyed our stay here. Our host Shin Yukoya was so friendly and helpful. He helped repaired the shoes of my friend. His wife served sumptuous meals and he also prepared the delicious soup. He also lent beautiful kimonos for us to wear during our stay. The location is perfect since it is at the entrance of Chikatsuyu. We were pleasantly surprised with the welcome sign of our group. So thoughtful.

Charming inn in a lovely town
I arrived early (hiked faster than I thought I would) and the hosts graciously let me check in early. Such a relief to be able to clean-up and get refreshed after a good (sweaty) day of hiking. The hosts and the meals were great and the town was a really nice place to stop for the night. I walked over to CABELLO Coffee and enjoyed some coffee and read my book. I really enjoyed having the afternoon in Chikatsuyu and the Cherry Garden is perfectly located. I would have loved to try the town's onsen but it was closed that day.

Fantastic!
Right in the Kumano Kodo trail, really friendly and approachable host family. The guest house has 2 rooms and a communal kitchen and living/dining area. When we stayed we were the only gusts so had it to ourselves. Large clean shower room but no hot springs. The dinner was one of the best we had in Japan sooo tasty and seemed traditional yet slightly catered to Western tastes. Highly recommended!

Super kind and helpful hosts with beautiful rooms, bikes, and great location!
The location is immediately on the left once you descend the Kumano Kodo and enter Chikatsuyu. Beautiful guest home with spacious kitchen and living room, and clean shared bath space. The host and his family were extremely friendly and helpful. Our favorite part were the free bikes they had for us to ride around the little town and see all its beauty. There are also great coffee shops in the area (we love cabelo cafe). Only downside is the breakfast at the local cafe isn't the most filling, so you may need some snacks, but the grocery store is very conveniently located and should have everything you need.

Lovely guesthouse, welcoming hosts
A lovely guest house in a great location close to the trail as it enters Chikatsuyu. The room was clean. The bathroom was clean, but we visited the public bath house a ten minute walk away. The meals were fantastic, with the bento box lunch being the best on our Kumano. Breakfast at a near by cafe was also good. The host family were lovely, very welcoming, kind and helpful. All in our group of three would recommend staying here.

Another perfect accommodation. Great food, exceptionally clean. Accommodation is on the track, a welcome sign on stairs with my name was really nice. A short stroll into town - which is quite small, but very friendly. Hosts were fantastic, English was good. Would definitely recommend.

Breakfast at cafe
Chia-san's guest home was a great stop for us. We were provided Yukatas and traditional slippers to wear out to explore the town. Bicycles were also available for us to use. Onsen and local Art Museum was not far away from the accommodation. Room was spacious and comfortable. Dining room was cosy and had a warm and romantic atmosphere when 3 course meal was served. Laundry service is provided but with a small fee. Hosts were very acommodating and friendly. We were happy with our stay. Important to note that breakfast is at the cafe near the bus stop instead of the guest house itself. There was a miscommunication where we thought breakfast was going to be served at the guest house, but Chia-san and her husband was waiting outside for us. Despite that, we managed to catch the bus in the end.

Great accommodation, not so great meals.
Our hosts and accommodation (main house) were superb. The meals, however, were not so great. Dinner was served bento-style. It was okay, but not up to usual Japanese minshuku standards. Nevertheless, it was enjoyable. However, all the men needed an extra bowl of rice to satisfy their appetites. For breakfast we were directed to a nearby cafe that served the smallest breakfast we'd ever seen. It was miserly small. One piece of chewy toast, 10 cc yoghurt (I kid you not), a little lettuce and a small cup of coffee. An additional cup of coffee was another 200 yen. I would recommend skipping breakfast and lunch here and going with the dinner only option.

A fabulous experience
The house is right on the Kumano Kudo path. It is in a lovely little village. There is a nearby onsen that was great. Our rooms were very traditional and quite large. The mattresses were really comfortable. We elected to have dinner at the house. We ate in the owners dining room. Food was great. The huge bonus here if the family. They are absolutely delightful, so friendly and so helpful. Staying here ended up being one of the best experiences we had over our 3 weeks in Japan.

Delightful traditional rooms with warm host family
We arrived to a very friendly welcome from our hosts, who had arranged some lovely personal touches for us above and beyond their duty. The double room with tatami floor was spacious and immaculate with views in two directions the valley, including various blossom trees. Dinner was a delicious homemade meal of many parts, which we ate with the other guests. Watch out for the low ceiling beams though, they caught me out a few times!

Excellent choice for a real Japanese-style living experience
Of all the places we stayed on our trek, this was our favorite because it gave us the most authentic Japanese home experience, something an inn or onsen resort can't replicate. Our group stayed in two Japanese-style rooms in the owners' house. Meals, which were large and delicious, were served in the family's dining room (though at a separate time from their own meal). As guests we had our own shared bathroom, which was modern and efficient. Like any typical Japanese house, it is kept pretty cold in the winter (it was January), but the room heaters did an adequate job.

Wonderful!
How wonderful it was at the end of a long day of hiking to see our name displayed on the welcome board beside the trail. We stayed in the main house and loved every minute of it. The hosts made us feel welcome and cared for, the amenities were first-class and the dinner they prepared for us was of an equally high standard. Overall, I can't rate this place too highly!

Beautiful house and gracious hosts
The host was very friendly, welcoming and solicitous. He offered us tea when we arrived, chatted for a bit, and had lots of information about the town. The dinner was excellent, with a variety of Japanese dishes, and the breakfast (at a local cafe) and the lunch box were also very good. We stayed in a tatami-mat room in a guest house with a view of the garden. There was one other couple staying in the house, in a different room with a shared bathroom. The house was very clean and nicely decorated, and everything looked new. Highly recommended.

Homely atmosphere at the end of a tiring day.
This is a relatively newer minshuku and hence may not be on all maps, but it is located directly along the signposted route just outside Chikatsuyu. Stayed in the Annex where the dining room is located as well. Supper was served bento style with a small hotpot, while breakfast was western style of eggs and toast at a small coffee shop 3 min walk away. Bicycles were available to cycle to the nearby supermarket or to use the onsen at a nearby minshuku. Overall a very pleasant stay with friendly hosts.
