Kominka Guest House Noko Noko
Aki was a fantastic host - very kind and welcoming. The lunch box was way more food than we needed. It was heavy and bulky to carry in our packs. The information provided that the host does not speak much English, but Aki does speak English fluently.

Welcoming host and comfortable guest house
I had a great experience staying with Aki-san who was a kind and generous host throughout my stay and care had clearly gone into preparing the evening meal. Although this guest house is a little way off the main trail, the owner offered both pick up and drop off at Takahara rest area to resume the trail and communication via WhatsApp was easy. (It is also possible to walk the additional distance to the guest house and take in the scenery if you want to extend your hiking after a shorter first day - I chose this option and enjoyed arriving at the guesthouse on a quiet late afternoon in November.) Overall, this was a peaceful and relaxing place to spend my first night on the trail

Wonderful guest house near the Kumano Kodo trail
The Kominka Guest House was a wonderful place to stay on our first night in Takahara. The owner, Aji, is kind and gracious. She picked us up at the station and brought us to her pretty guest house. The wood-fired bath was a special treat after a day of hiking. Aji made us a delicious dinner and breakfast, as well as a great lunch to take on the trail.
We left a water bottle at the guest house and, when we arrived at our next destination, it was there waiting for us with a sweet note wishing us a good hike.
We definitely recommend this guest house.

Ali in Takahara
Aki was Kind, friendly and very helpful. She picked us up from the rest stop and took us to our starting Point the next day. She hellped us to Navigation our walk and the Buses. She was extra helpful as I had hurt my knee so contacted our next accomodation to ask her to pick me up from the bus stop. The Place was clean and her hot bath was magnificent. I would highly recommend this home stay.

A Very Comfortable Stay at Noko Noko
Guesthouse Noko Noko is a beautiful, spacious, and thoughtfully designed home. The bath/shower house was especially lovely, and everything was well-stocked with all of the amenities we needed. The host was very kind and helpful—she picked us up and took us to the grocery store so we could grab lunch for the next day, which we really appreciated. The meals were delicious, and every part of the stay felt easy and comfortable. We’d absolutely recommend this place for anyone looking for a peaceful and comfortable stay.

Pleasant Stay
Host was very nice and sweet. Limited English/Japanese wasn't an issue at all. Accommodation is not walkable from the Kumano Kodo trail but not an issue as host picked us up at the rest stop (approx. 15 min drive) and drove us back to the rest stop the next morning. Host offered to take us to the supermarket for snacks and water (there were snacks for free and for sale, at the house, but we didn't know at the time, so took up the offer to swing by the grocery store. The accommodation was nice, cozy. Bathroom is in the house, but the shower and laundry are outside, in another room. Dinner was very good (bento box); Breakfast was fulfilling (sandwiches) but lunch was a little lacking (bread and croissants). Overall, a comfortable stay in a house managed by a wonderful host.

Aki is great
This was a lovely guesthouse. I had no trouble getting my pickup from Aki (the host) using WhatsApp.
The space is huge and comfortable. I loved the wood fired bath.
The dinner was very very good. I feel bad saying anything negative about the place because Aki was so nice, but I was really disappointed in the breakfast and lunch box. It was white bread sandwiches and store bought foods. This was my most expensive guesthouse so I would have thought the breakfast and lunch would have been the same quality as the dinner.
Otherwise it was amazing.

Wonderful place to stay
This place was a little out of the way, but you get the whole place. The kitchen is incredibly well stocked and the host is most amenable. She collects you and drives you to and from Takahara. She kindly stopped at the coop so that we could pick up some food for our meal. Highly recommend.

Spacious and wonderful
We hiked the Nakahechi route in March 2025. Noko Noko was our first guesthouse, and a wonderful way to start the hike. Aki picked us up with a warm welcome and drove us to her beautiful guesthouse. She kindly offered to stop at the grocery store on the way. Once at the house, she gave us a tour of the space, which was large, clean, and comfortable. We enjoyed the traditional Japanese architecture combined with a few western elements. Our child enjoyed the toys on offer as well. The separate bath/shower house is gorgeous, so relaxing, clean, and well designed. After a tasty dinner, we relaxed before an early bedtime. We enjoyed a quiet evening, a tasty breakfast and a nice drive back to the trail. We highly recommend Noko Noko as a calm, beautiful, and spacious retreat!

Wonderful host, lovely accommodation
My host was fantastic, super friendly, helpful and accommodating. The guest house was an excellent combination of traditional but with all the luxury modern conveniences.
My host was very responsive to messages before my trip and kindly adapted to my schedule changes, picking me up and dropping me off earlier than originally agreed.
The kitchen was also so well stocked with equipment and kitchen basics, wish I had more time to try out cooking with homemade miso.
The bath which we heated by hand was also a real treat.

Family travel with kids-Lovely Japanese house, very nice host
Staying at Aki san's guest house was a real pleasure. The guest house was spacious with a lot of greenery around the house and she even had games and toys for the kids. Location is a bit out of the way but Aki san picked us up at the trailhead. The public phone was out of order but luckily we found a Japanese speaking traveler who called the guest house for pickup on our behalf. She drove us to a convenience store after pickup and we loaded up on supplies for dinner, breakfast and lunch. The kitchen at the guest house was well equipped with all utensils and dinnerware. The heated bath was a nice experience after our hike. We had a great stay here.

Great stay, the best in our Kumano Kodo
Although we were not sure duento the house is not near to thw kumano kodo path, the owner picked up just after arriving at Takahara, just 5 min after calling her.
Aki is adorable, she made everything to make us comfortable although we knew little of japanese, She tested it, :) but she nanaged to communicate very well with us.
The house is simply perfect. Loved the frogs (kero-kero) sound, very relaxing environment and we did the bath experience with wood, totally recommend it as a nice ezperience.
All was clean and neat, lots of stuff at the kitchen to make your stay easy, and the food was veey good! Even there was a tuned guitar in the house, which was handy for a very nice evening. The lunch picnic was not available but she brought us to the supermarket to get what we could need for the next day.
10/10, would totally repeat.

Walking Kumano Koda
Host was a very nice and friendly lady. Host collected us (4 people) as stated and transported us to the accommodation. Accommodation was clean, quiet and comfortable. Only drawback for some people might be the external toilet/bathroom (wasn't a problem for us). Our host kindly took us to an alternative location to catch a bus when the weather turned bad and we were unable to walk as planned. Overall, a good place to stay when hiking the Kumano Kodo.

Fantastic host and house
Lovely Japanese house, with lots of space to hang out, and an outdoor seating area with a beautiful view. Well equipped for preparing meals (including oils, spices, and homemade miso). Comfortable tatami and other details (such as remote controlled lights) show the care that went into the house. Our host was fantastic and we enjoyed chatting with her. Pickup and was smooth and our host brought us to a nearby supermarket to go shopping. Would’ve happily stayed another week.

The host was lovely. She picked us up from Takehara rest stop and brought us to the supermarket to buy some groceries as there was no meal plan offered. She patiently waited for us as we debated and figured out what to buy.
The kitchen was well-equipped.
Room was spacious for a family of four. Layout was traditional with the bathroom in a separate building but it was nicely heated with a nice bath which was lovely after a walk in the cold. :-)

Noco Noco was gorgeous and beyond comfortable. It was also an incredibly unique experience for me and my partner - coming all the way from New York. Aki-san, our host, was so kind to pick us up from Takahara and drop us off the next morning. She also drew us a hot bath for our arrival. Can't recommend it enough and hope I can go back again some day.
