Cozy Cottages
Happiness Chikatsuyu is a cottage owned by the lovely Ms. Muya. It is located in a small grove of trees just north of the Kumano Kodo in Chikatsuyu village next to the Hiki-gawa River. The cozy cottage has a Japanese-style room, small loft, dining room, and kitchen. The dining room features a giant wooden table. The windows look onto the surrounding garden planted with a variety of flowering trees. Guests often enjoy sitting on the deck or in the private gazebo taking in the peaceful location.
The three annex buildings (Ken-chan, Masaki and Chii-chan) are named after Ms. Muya's grandchildren. They were built in a corner of the property near the river surrounded by Japanese maple trees. These three annex buildings are identical and each have two Japanese-style rooms, two sinks and toilet. The guestrooms are divided by sliding fusuma doors. As with the main Happiness Chikatsuyu cabin, it is a private rental, there is only one booking per day.
There are two bicycles for each of the four buildings that are free to use, convenient for a cruise around town, or to visit the nearby grocery store to buy food.
Ms. Muya wishes to share her little piece of paradise with you. Welcome and fill yourself with "Happiness Chikatsuyu."

Amazing place
This place was an amazing reprieve after a long day of hiking. The owner is so nice and helpful. There are bikes you can use to ride around this beautiful mountain time. Such an amazing stay! Definitely would stay again.

Great spot!
I really enjoyed the tatami flooring and traditional bedding. The location is gorgeous, surrounded by the mountains. Staff were very helpful. The washing machine and drying machine was a bonus.

Big traditional house with a lovely garden. The rooms are clean and comfortable. We enjoyed our stay in the village. The only observation is regarding breakfast, served at the near-by caffe. It was cold (even we showed up in time) and very poor.

Pure Happiness!
Happiness Chikatsuyu truly brought us happiness after the hilly hike from Takijiri-oji. The attention to detail, decore, and amenities were fantastic after a day of hiking! The host (we forgot to get his name) was so helpful when we wanted to organize a last minute bag shuttle service for the following day. The Yakata and meals made this stay one of our favourite in Japan. Well worth every penny!

Another lovely clean accommodation and it was nice to have the place to ourself. Very good amenities including a full kitchen. Unfortunately we had to walk to the local cafe in town for breakfast and to get our lunch box and this meal while nice was quite smaller than other meals received up to that point.

Comfortable accomodation which was easy to find. Although the dinner provided was a simple bento, it was delicious and satisfying. The breakfast was straightfoward and close to the bus stop, which allowed us to catch our bus in good time.

One of the best Experience staying at "Minshuku" Inn
After walking over 13 Km and 16,000 steps from Takijiri-Oji to Chikatsuyu-Oji, my legs hurts and entire boy exhausted, but the room was one of the excellent experience staying at "Minshuku" Style Inn.

Beautiful grounds and convenient location!
The place was clean and spacious and provided yukatas. It's nice to have a laundry machine inside the unit. We really loved the grounds, which had beautiful maple trees and overlooked the river. Checking in was easy and efficient, and the location was great and only slightly off the main kumano kodo trail.

Overall not so nice
Overall experience was not so nice. The guesthouse was very big and too big for only 2 persons. There was only one heat pump for the entire house, which was not sufficient, so the guesthouse was very cold. There was not enough kitchen tools in the kitchen. The water regulation in the bathroom was impossible to control, which did result in a very very cold bath. This was uncomfortable. Unfortinately the food for dinner and breakfast was bad. There was not enough food and the food did taste like it was pre-heated from the morning. We cannot recommend others to stay here.

Spacious detached cottage with a view
The cottage was serene and comfortable, about 500 meters off the main hiking trail, well marked and easy to find. The dinner was a bento box on the small side after a long hike, but tasty. Coffee and tea provided, and you can supplement with instant Ramen noodles available at the room if still hungry. A small breakfast is provided at a nearby restaurant. I highly recommend staying at this place

Easy, convenient location, but food was rather disappointing
We enjoyed the location of Happiness Chikatsuyu. We stayed in Annex 5 and it was a very nice suite, with a view of the river in the distance. Location was clean and comfortable. We had the dinner and breakfast, and for both the portions were small, and the breakfast was in a nearby cafe and rather sad.

We really enjoyed our stay at Happiness, and appreciated the fresh Kimonos, delicious plant-based meals we ordered, and how close we were to the tiny town. The home itself was very clean and comfortable, with a comfy soaking tub and lots of light. Recommended!

Beautiful House right by the Kumano Kodo entry!
A lovely home that felt very authentically Japanese. The beers and food already stocked in the kitchen were a truly welcome site. The meals were delicious, however breakfast and the lunch bento wasn’t exactly filling for hikers doing full days along the Nakahechi, for others bussing more it would’ve been fine, however.

The Name Says It All
After a long day of trekking from Takahara to Chikatsuyu, it was such a pleasant surprise to come out of the trail right at the start of town. The view was breathless. Surrounded by majestic mountains with a river running through it, lies this little quaint town. There are signs all along the main road that led us to the house and was welcomed with open arms by the friendliest faces of our host and his grandson who, by the way, Annex 3 is named after. Even though each house can sleep 9 people, our host split us into 2 groups and graciously offered to put us in 2 houses. Both host and Ken Chan showed us around the house and helped us get settled. The tree lined property is so beautiful with flowers growing and benches all along the riverbanks where we sat and enjoyed the tranquility. Our dinner was delivered at the house while breakfast was served at Cafe Hashiori-jaya. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious. We would have loved to spend a little more time exploring this place. We were truly happy and enjoyed the charm and vibe of this place.

Lovely guesthouse
The annex we stayed in at Happiness was very clean and modern and had all the facilities we could want. There was even a fridge full of cold beers, which was appreciated after a long day of hiking in the heat! The evening meal was excellent. The only slight downside was that the breakfast served at the cafe the following morning was a little small, not sufficient to fuel for a day of hiking on the trails.

amazing house in Chikatsuyu
While planning the trip, I considered going further than Chikatsuyu to find accommodation, considering the number of kilometres of the second stage. In the end, I found this amazing place, basically a small house with a garden, a very nice living room and bathroom. It also has a kitchen, but I had all the meals included which were very good, the packed lunch as well! The owner did not speak English, but he did everything to make me understand him anyway and was very kind.

Great location, comfortable accommodations, tasty meals
The location and facilities were excellent. The bento dinner, breakfast, and lunch box were all fresh and delicious. I read several reviews stating that the portions were small, and I don't disagree. But they are traditional Japanese portion sizes, and there is a nearby grocery store with a decent selection if you need more calories to fuel your hike. I'd definitely stay here again and would recommend Happiness Chikatsuyu to my friends.

Excellent place to relax after a long day of hiking
This was our lodging after our first day of hiking from Takijiri to Chikatsuyu. The unit we stayed in (Masaki, Annex 5) could easily house 4 people, so for just 2 people it felt luxurious. We enjoyed soaking in the private bath after a long day of hiking. We stayed in mid-March, and the temperature does drop super low at night, so we'd recommend keeping the heat on and strategically closing the sliding shoji doors to stay warm.

I couldn’t believe the size of my “room” (more like house to myself) when I checked in! It was also decorated beautifully in traditional Japanese style and had beautiful gardens and view. Highly recommend it!

This is a beautiful space! We stayed in the annex and just loved our experience here. It is right next to a beautiful creek and an incredible vista. The space is comfortable, clean and very tranquil! Kudos to the amazing tub as well! Great after a long walk! Loved that you could buy beers once you arrived.

滝尻から近露に降りてきて川の左岸にあります。一番新しい一棟を選んだので非常に清潔でした。また電気ストーブもあり寒くはありませんでした。夕食は一日ハードな行程でしたので足りないと思い1KM先のスーパーで買い出しをしておいて正解でした。朝ごはんのコーヒーはおいしく、昼食は充分で本宮までのエネルギー確保に非常に役に立ちました。

Great cabin for the first night on the trail
It's a spacious house with various rooms. In winter, it's quite cold, and the bathroom isn't heated, but there is plenty of hot water in the shower. Bedding was comfortable, and so was the lounge room. Dinner wasn't all that special, though, and breakfast was even less exciting.

Beautiful home with a magical garden
The guest house is beautiful. Huge! Clean and welcoming, with all the amenities you could ask for. It felt like home and was comfortable. The delivered bento dinner was tasty, but may have been on the smaller side, considering it was a longer hike to get to the town, but it was tasty. The garden was breathtaking! Absolutely gorgeous. And the bed was so comfortable. We had a wonderful stay here!

Although the Japanese-style room can be divided into separate rooms, there is only one air conditioner, so a gap should be left to facilitate the circulation of the air conditioner. But there are two sinks and two toilets which are quite convenient.Breakfast portion is small，and paid drinks are provided in the room, and the price is on the high side.

this is a wonderful guestroom you should absolutely choose in your Kumano Kodo travel. very clean, cozy and modern, and the room is much bigger than average Japanese room. The receptionist, a very nice old gentleman, really helped us a lot and even offered us his drying machine in his office. One small flaw is that their meals (both dinner and breakfast) were too little, it was even not enough for our three girls. You really have to prepare enough food in advance and there are no groceries or restaurants still open after hiking.

Everything is great
It was a pleasure to be able to stay in a room with a washing machine and bathtub after a few hours of rain on the day of arrival. The breakfast facility is conveniently situated near the station, facilitating easy access to transportation after dining. awesome stay at Chikatsuyu Happiness!
What a great place to to recover from the tough 1st day of hiking from Takijiri! we were warmly welcomed and really enjoyed the spacious house and the great facilities (shower room with separate bath, washing machine, outdoor deck and garden). The meal was a bit small for us after a long day hiking but it was tasty !

Comforable and Cute Cottage
Happiness Chikatsuyu was very comfotable and roomy, and we enjoyed relaxing for a night here after our biggest day walking. The minibar drinks in the fridge (very reasonably priced) meant there was no need to leave the premises, and it was good to use the washing machine to wash our sweaty trekking clothes! The supper was plentiful and tasty (bento box provided), and the breakfast (served at the cafe) and lunch provided fine.

A great stay experience
It's several standalone houses with beautiful yards. The room is very clean, spacious, and quiet. The scenery is great after opening the curtains on all sides, and it's relaxing after a long hike. The grandfather of the homestay can communicate in simple English and introduce the facilities of the room. Because the clothes needed to be dried after washing, I found that the front desk had already locked and called the owner again. They drove back for 40 minutes after 9 pm to help me open the door. I am very grateful. Dinner is a lunchbox placed in the room, very sumptuous. Breakfast was at the coffee shop next to bus station which was well matched and also satisfied the energy needs for the morning

Quiet, nice enough, clean and basic stay close to the river and village centre.
Quiet and reasonably comfortable, fairly basic but clean stay with all key facilities available. We slept well here and enjoyed being close to the river though it had limited and basic food options and it was very hot inside until the air con started to work, though remained fairly warm throughout the night. Owners seemed friendly and helpful enough and over all a good stay.

Very nice lodging
This is a large comfortable place to stay for several persons. It’s a bit outside of town, quiet and surrounded by pleasant gardens. A good place to stay for several days to relax. The only negative was the meals. They are very simple, prepared in town and delivered. If you are hiking the Kumano Kodo you will need more to eat. I recommend skipping the option to include meals and instead make a trip to the well stocked Co-op in town, and also to the excellent bakery in the same area. The owner provides bicycles to make this easy to do. There is also an art museum in town which is well worth a stop.

Family travel with kids-Beautiful cottage and garden. Meals could be better.
Happiness Chikatsuyu is a beautiful japanese style cottage with a gorgeous garden. We had a great stay here. Children and adults alike had fun wearing the elaborate Yukatas. Chikatsuyu is a cuttle little town and we enjoyed walking around. The supper was delivered from a local restaurant close by and you have to go there in the morning for breakfast and to pickup the lunch. We had asked for vegetarian meals but the bento boxes had some fish in it.

Incredible trip = highly recommend staying here along your trek
Gorgeous homestay to myself - so peaceful. The hosts were lovely and greeted me upon arrival. The bathtub is luxurious, food was incredible and the location was very central. This was one of my most memorable nights on the train since I was alone and able to be in the village instead of at a B&B. If I were going to hike again, I would stay here next time as well.

Happiness Chikatsuyu Annexes
These self-contained annexes were such a nice surprise, as they were very clean, comfortable and had everything we needed, including a laundry, small kitchen and lounge chairs. These annexes were well separated on a large piece of land on the outskirts of town, located beside a small stream. It was a short walk into the centre of town, where we had a lovely breakfast served in a local café. I highly recommend staying here.

Beautiful, Quiet location with spacious room
Separate ‘cabins’ with very spacious rooms overlooking the river. Even the bath had an excellent view which was highly welcome after a long day hiking in the rain. The host was very friendly and accommodating by letting us dry our clothes in his dryer. Supper was brought in from a local restaurant and guests have to walk down to the restaurant for breakfast which is a bit inconvenient.

Great place to stay, tasty food but small portions
The location is very nice and the check in was nearly in a rush. We stayed at the Ken-chan and enjoyed a beautiful view on the river close to the house. The accommodation is quite new, large and modern. You can even use your private washing machine if needed. The meals however are disappointing, not the quality but the size of the portions. After walking 17 km up and down on the trek you won't get the calories you need. The breakfast is also a joke, one table spoon of scrambled egg, one slice of toast bread and some micro side dishes are not enough to provide you with the energy you need for the next days hike. Luckily there is a supermarket (not combini) a 10 minutes walk from the accommodation where you can get what you need for the next day. Keep on mind they will close at 18 o'clock. To sum up the place is quite nice and ok.

Beautiful private room with a river view
The guest house grounds were beautifully maintained and sat along the riverbank. We enjoyed snacks and beverages in the gazebo after our hike and happily listened to the river flow by from our room. The room was clean and spacious with two bathrooms!

Highlight of my Kumano trip
I couldn't ask for more. The location is amazing, it's so close to the river, and the window view is spetacular, you can see the sakura trees and the moring mist and the stars at night. And the apartment is spacious, I would recommend this to my friends.

中辺路ハイクの1日目に泊まりました。 何もかもが綺麗ですしオーナーさんもすごく親切です。 お風呂も大きくて近くの道の駅で買った入浴剤を入れて入ったのがとても癒されました。 茶屋からの夜のお弁当は揚げ物がメインと聞いていたので栄養偏るかなと思い、チェックインの前にAコープでお味噌汁とお刺身、地のお漬物も買いました。 朝は茶屋でいただきましたがトースト1枚と、りんご、レタスとトマト、ミックスベジタブルの卵とじのみでたんぱく質が少なかったのでその日のハイクはシャリバテになりそうでした。 前日にAコープでカニカマとかサラミか何か買っておくといいでしょう。 お水が美味しいのでコーヒーはとっても美味しかったです。 お代わりしたかったぐらい。 お部屋にハンガーがあったらもっと便利だと思いました。 洗濯機はチィちゃんのお部屋には無かったです。

Beautiful cottage in a lovely village
We came out of the forest at 5pm after our first day of the hike and found this lovely place. The old man was waiting for us with our dinner bentos which turned out to be a perfect dinner. The cottage is beautifully decorated and very spacious for 3 of us. Well located a few minutes walk from the village centre. Breakfast was ready for us at 7 and was OK, a bit boring, but the lunch bentos were just perfect. We really enjoyed our stay and would have loved to stay another night if we would have had the time.

Happy at Happiness Chikatsuyu
The rooms at Happiness are separate new buildings. Everything was new and well thought out. Two huge adjoinint rooms on the river with wall to wall glass doors for great views. Two separate bathrooms, each with nice bidets, and a large shower/tub/wash room. The bonus was a washer, which we needed for washing clothes. A dryer would have been nice... The dinner was very good and delivered to the room on-time (like everything in Japan). The supplied bento boxes arranged from the local cafe were awesome. The breakfast was OK, but western, not Japanese, so pretty basic. However, the cafe manager had breakfast on the table and ready when we walked in, so she knew we needed to catch an early bus. Cafe was right next to the bus stop, so very convenient. Just a short walk to the grocery stores. Chikatsuyu is a very sweet village town.

This would be a great place for a family to stay as the house is pretty large with a kitchen, living room and bedroom. Beautiful garden and quiet area. Unfortunately disappointed with dinner and breakfast. Small bento box for dinner with cold food. Breakfast also cold. Lunch box was yummy though with onigiri. If you can bring your own food I’d highly recommend this place.

Can I give more than 5 stars?
Happiness was spectacular! The name was perfect for this place. It was comfortable, cozy, and spacious. It was a sanctuary after a long day of hiking. We only stayed one night but wished we had two nights to enjoy it. The shower and tub were large and felt like a spa. The beds were the most comfortable tatami mats we have ever slept on. I often sleep poorly on tatami mat beds but I had an amazing sleep. The view was amazing, right on the river. Our only minor feedback was about the food. Dinner was tasty but we wanted a slightly bigger portion after a full day of hiking, and the store was not nearby to get snacks. Breakfast was very small, but not too far from the store so we got extra food. The lunch bento was a good size though, and tasty. So perhaps arrive with one or two extras snacks if you stay here. Overall we cannot recommend Happiness highly enough, it was a very special space and we’d love to stay again.

Gorgeous!
What a beautiful house, in a lovely, quiet environment. We were hot, sweaty and exhausted when we arrived. Initially, the cold air conditioning inside and the shower were fabulous. Once we'd cooled off, though, we could appreciate the beautiful building and fittings. This house and garden is spectacularly lovely and our hostess was obliging and understanding. She looked after us very well. We wanted to stay longer, but had committed elsewhere.

Serene, beautiful, and roomy
Very nice people, beautiful house and gardens. Relaxing indoor and outdoor spaces. We only spent a night here while on the Kumano Kodo, but I would have lived to have spent a week! Chikatsuyu is such a beautiful valley!

Lovely house
This was a self-contained house with everything you could need, including a washing machine. Very big and comfortable. The manager was also kind enough to drive us to Hongu the next day when the rain made bus and walking options less pleasant.

A gorgeous house with a stunning view!
Annex 1 of Happiness Chikatsuyu is right next to the river and the view is so beautiful! Moreover, the house is spacious, clean and we enjoyed our stay a lot. However, the breakfast was a bit disappointing, the portion was too small for a whole day hike.

Amazing cottage homestay
Loved the cottage homestay and were warmly welcomed by Mr Matsumoto. Supper was delivered pipping hot to the cottage. Breakfast was eaten at the nearby cafe but could be a little more for hungry hikers. Will return!

Fantastic Stay
We were so appreciative of Mr Matsumoto who worried about our arrival and met us off the bus from Hongu Taisha as we had changed our hiking plans that day. He didn't know we were on that bus but took a change! We were very touched. The accomodation was fabulous and food great. Mr Matsumoto even came back and gave us delicious mandarins from his garden. What a treasure he and the accomodation was for weary hikers! Thank you.

Loved staying here!
Loved being at this happy cottage with beautiful yard and surroundings close to the river. It was wonderful to meet Mr.Matsumoko who gave me the key and oriented me to the cottage, and a treat to have the time to talk to him when I checked out with both of us on our phones with google translate! He was so sweet to give me some delicious persimmons and oranges!

Spacious and adequate
The accommodation was very spacious and situated in a nice place right next to the river and a beautiful garden. Although it wasn't exactly dirty, it seemed like it had been a while since the place was cleaned thoroughly. We went ahead and vacuumed the rooms shortly after arriving since there were some kind of insect leftovers all over the place. Apart from that, it was comfortable. Our dinner arrived in the form of bento in the evening and in the morning we went to a small café nearby to get a nice little breakfast. Luckily, a super market and some small shops weren't too far off so we could get some additional stuff to eat and drink.

Matsumoto-San was a wonderful host. He was very kind to drive me to the place to continue the route. The cottage was traditional Japanese with futon bed. A very nice and unexpectedly large and comfortable house.
I was also met by the owner's friend walking towards the house and after a quick show around, he loaned me a bicycle to buy some basic food--very nice as I'd opted out of the meal selection knowing there's a couple of places to buy something in town. After cooking in the decently equipped kitchen, I had an awesome night's sleep on comfortable futon (my preference) in a nice Japanese house! 5 stars.

Happy always at Happiness Chikatsuyu
We could not believe our luck when we realised that we had an amazing traditional Japanese house as our home for a night. A holiday from our holiday! The bath is amazing, outdoor stream with fish and sleeping on mats. Incredible experience! The person who manages the house was so helpful, supplied bikes so we could go around town. Such a beautiful place, if you can stay another day, do.

We enjoyed our stay at Happiness Chikatsuyu. Having a place all to ourselves was great. It was very clean, and the free use of bikes was convenient. The bento box dinner was more than sufficient, and the breakfast at the neighboring cafe was fine, but if you're looking to be served, then another accommodation that provides this experience might be better for you. Overall, we were very satisfied.

先日はお世話になりありがとうございました。 お部屋は広く設備が整ってとても良かったです。お庭も美しく、ゆっくり過ごしたいところでした。 夜は冷えるからと暖房を入れてくださっていたので、助かりました。 自由にお部屋を使えるので食材買って料理するのも良かったかも。時間的に無理でしたが。 お弁当は手軽に食べることができ良かったのですが、暖かいものがあればよかったなと思います。朝食は少なく思いました。私はともかく外国の方には足りるのかなと思いました。 滝尻から歩いて最後は暗くなって焦りましたが、宿は近くで、ほっこりさせて貰えました。 翌日も最高にいいお天気で大斎原の鳥居が輝いて見えました。 いい思い出が出来ました。 またコースを変えて歩きたいです。 ありがとうございました。

We stayed in one of the self contained cabins - it was beautiful. Spacious, comfortable and top quality furnishings. Aboslutely gorgeous setting overlooking the river. It was nice to be self contained with our own bathroom for a change as most of the accomodation on the Kumano is small rooms and shared facilities. Meals are delivered and then you can choose when to heat them up and eat them. Complementary bicycles were very handy. It is a idyllic location that you could relax at for a couple of days if you wanted.

Nice spacious traditional, but modern, rooms.
The owner was very friendly and welcoming. We had a great spacious traditional Japanese room, but recently built, so very clean and modern. There were bikes available for free, to ride around town or go to the nearby supermarket. The sound of the nearby river, combined with the morning light filtering through the leaves was truly magical in the morning. We would've been glad to stay an extra day here just cause it was so peaceful. Diner was great, traditional Japanese food, good quantity and quite delicious. Breakfast was in a cute store nearby, it was good but a bit on the light side. The lunchbox was good, but also a bit light.

Beautiful home stay
We were very warmly met by Mr Matsumoto after our long walk from Takajiri and were thrilled with our brand new, spacious, self-contained homestay. It was in a lovely, tranquil setting by the river, a couple of minutes out of the main (?) little street, but easy to find with excellent signage. (Coming from Takahara turn left before the bridge into town.) The accommodation also came with two bikes. Dinner was delivered to the homestay and was very tasty. Breakfast served down at a local cafe/shop was good, and the lunch box from the same place was also good and filling. We loved our stay here, and would highly recommend.

Beautiful Happy Home!
We absolutely loved staying here! Its located in a beautiful little town of Chikatsuyu. It was easy to find (well marked from where the trailhead leads into town). The house is really comfortable and large (we didnt realize we would have a whole house to ourself), nicely decorated to feel homey and relaxing. There is a large kitchen, washer/dryer, lovely back porch with a tranquil garden. The area is surrounded by view of mountains. There were also bicycles available to ride around town.

This guest house was spacious and comfortable. The garden was so beautiful and sitting in the gazebo relaxing was a welcome time after a day of hiking. Quiet house in the Garden
Very good size house with lots of space for sleeping, eating and a good Bath. Very clean. It was a little cold that evening but the house warmed up nicely. The food that was delivered to us for dinner was good and healthy with plenty to eat. Breakfast and lunch on the other hand was a little small but still good. The futon mattresses were a bit thin so the floor was a little hard but we seemed to sleep ok. There were plenty of blankets to keep us warm.

Nice cottage
It is a very nice cottage but it is located under 4hr into the Kumanos Kodo trail form Takahara, witch means you either walk further and then take a bus back and the next day take another bus tos start where you left off (which I did), or have a super short hike and then a super long on day 3. The food is not good. Mostly fried and delivered already call. The breakfast is super scarce and tries to be western style which makes it even worse. Meals are not comparable to those served in the other lodges.

Beautiful japanese-style house, all just for you
Mr. Matsumoto's place is a real knockout, a beautiful Japanese style house just for you and fully equipped. Wide kitchen, washing machine, wide bathroom, etc. Dinner was brought to us by a neighbouring cafe (the same place where we would have breakfast the next day) in the form of two very complete and tasty bento boxes. We had those together with a couple of beers that we bought at a local supermarket (a 5 min. very nice ride by bike) right in front of the house's beautiful Japanese-style garden, a real treat. Although dinner was nice, in retrospect and after what we would be experiencing in other places, which was mostly home made and pretty amazing, we now see it as somehow subpar to those other places. But the house is awesome and Mr. Matsumoto was a great host, and this was probably the nicest lodging we stayed at in all of our Kumano Kodo hike.

Very nice house in good location. The owner / manager helped with a small problem in the house. I would probably prefer to have the breakfast in the house rather than going to the cafe but this was minor. Overall very good.

Lovely place to stay
We are a family of four. We loved this house. Really pleasant location, very peaceful with the breeze in the trees. The house is beautiful. One large tatami room for everyone to sleep, but plenty of room for everyone to have their own space during the day, with a large living room and kitchen, and a very nice bath/shower room. The futons were a little too thin to be comfortable for the adults, but there were extras in the cupboards so we put one on top of another and that was fine. The kitchen was well equipped, the only exception being a curious absence of knives and forks (lots of spoons and chopsticks though, and a few nice sharp cooking knives). The local supermarket is pretty decent, easily reachable with the bicycle, and we cooked for ourselves both nights there. Chikatsuyu itself is quiet and a pretty spot to leisurely explore.

Wonderful Cottage with a View
Probably one of my favorite stays in Japan. The cottage was built to be a a guesthouse. Lovely kitchen and living area. fairly large room and even a little loft. But the deck is definitely the highlight of the stay. Fabulous view of the mountains and valley. Great place to have some tea and enjoy the view, sunset and sunrise. Would hike again just to stay here. The owner is also a great cook. The home prepared meal by the owner was probably one of the best meals while in Japan.

An amazing rental house
This was such a nice accommodation. The kitchen was amazing to cook meals, and the bikes were a thoughtful touch. The only thing I would add is a knife in the kitchen to cut vegetables!

Happy Stay at Happiness Chikatsuyu
What a beautiful house to arrive at after a long cold day of hiking! I wanted to stay there forever :) They also provided bicycles which were fun & convenient for a round trip of the small town. Dinner was delicious too! The only thing I’d note, is that breakfast is quite light so you’ll need plenty of snacks during the morning to sustain the hike.

The Prettiest House
The House and gardens were exquisite. The lovely lady that opened for me was too sweet - she even came to bring me tea and chocolates! The only thing is that even though I switched on all available heating for the bedroom and closed all doors, it was still cold. Otherwise really great to have a whole house to myself.

Happiness Chikatsuyu is the Best!
My stay at Happiness Chikatsuyu was wonderful. The house was very clean and yard was beautiful. The kitchen is fully stocked and it is very easy to cook dinner. The traditional futon is comfortable and after hiking almost 8 hours, I slept like a baby. I highly recommend staying here.

Very nice house
I was welcomed very warmly by the host. I can speak some Japanese, so he explained everything gently in japanese. The house is impresive, very beautifuly decorated with japanese style and spacious. The garden is really beautiful, too. The supper was also very delicious. I lived the fact that there are two bicycles to use freely. Also there are kitchen with utensiles, refrigerator and washing machine to use freely, which is very useful. It is almost in the center of the village, so it's convenient and easy to find. Thank you.

Happy Kumano Kodo
Perfect way to do the Kumano Modo. Stay at Happiness Chikatsuyu and use the bus to get to the start and from the finish. Every night you have this perfect roomy house decorated with wedding kimonos to come home to, with a wonderful garden, hot bath and dinner delivered to the door. Breakfast in the cafe next to the bus stop. And a perfect host (Amina I think).

Pure happiness
Gorgeous place to stop after the hike from Takijiri oji. Beautiful woodwork, kimonos and artwork. I had the place to myself, so it was pure bliss having a bath and listening to the wind chimes as the sun set. Yakuta left out to wear after bath. Great atomosphere, garden was lovely. Dinner was great, breakfast & bento were ok - would have been better to have larger portions as I became hungry soon after eating both and I still had quite a few more hours to go on my hike. Definitely a place I would recommend. But maybe make sure you stock up on snacks/food for the hike before the shops close the day before.

Chikatsuyu stay review
We had a very pleasurable time in Chikatsuyu, with a whole traditional house to ourselves, easy access to the town by bike, and to the Kumano Kodo trail the next day. Toilets, bath and Kitchen were functional and the accomodation very calm. The bento box in the evening was average, the portion was small and we expected better quality food altogether. Also, we did not get breakfast in the morning (we expected another bento box but nothing came and we had to leave at 8 am). This was particularly disappointing and worrying as we had to walk in excess of 20km on the trail to reach Hongu, on an empty stomach ! Fortunately we had groceried to keep us going. All in all we had a very good experience but could have been improved by better food and breakfast.

Really happy place!
One of the best accomodation we have ever had. A perfect stop after the first day of Nakaechi route. The village with its river and the cottage with its wonderful garden were so beautiful that my wife and I would really have the chance to stay there more than one night. The house was provided with all the facilities and comforts you may need. We also appreciated the possibility to use the bycicles to reach the grocery store. The onsen-style bath was very beautiful and relaxing after the whole day of hiking.

Great Place to Stay
The home is very pretty and has a wonderful little backyard area with a pond in it. The hosts were very welcoming and kind. Mr. Matsumoto was nice enough to let me use his laptop to let my girlfriend know I was okay, since my phone didn't work in Japan. He also gifted me a bag of delicious baby tomatoes from his garden. His wife's dinner was both beautiful and tasty. Thank you so much for everything! I hope to come back some day.

Beautiful and relaxing!
This was one of our favorite places that we stayed during our whole trip to Japan. We could have enjoyed another day here. It included a spacious house with a beautiful garden and flowing fish pond. The deep soak tub with views of the garden was a pleasure after walking the Kumano Kodo. We are both vegan and they did an excellent job of accommodating our dietary needs.

It was pouring rain when we arrived and left so not perfect! No one was in the house next door so we went to the cafe by the bridge and it all worked out fine. I would not choose the Lunch or Supper boxes again as there are plenty of other options in the town. Use of the bike was handy though. Lovely house and garden (shame about the rain) nice big bath too.

Fabulous Little House
Our hostess was waiting for us as we walked up the street. She showed us around and efficiently used a translation app to clarify anything that needed to be. She then left us to our own little cottage by the river. Dinner arrived at the agreed time and was a delicious bento box. Then she came at the agreed time again in the morning and drove us the short distance into town for breakfast at a local cafe, again as planned all on time efficient and excellent all the way through.

Loved it!
We had a fully furnished, traditional Japanese style home all to our selves. It was great. The "reception" was a lovely lady who saw us walking down the road and showed us the place before leaving it to us. The fridge was stocked with locally picked mandarins and the kitchen was full of condiments for cooking. We had a great time.

A highlight
This place was fantastic and exactly what we needed after a long walk. We got to Chikatsuyu with plenty of time to go to the supermarket and found a restaurant that had good food next to the souvenir shops. The house was beautiful and the garden was fantastic. Wish we could have stayed longer.

A very special place
We were surprised to learn that we had the entire place to ourselves. Everything was lovely and clean, cozy and plentiful. We rode bicycles down to the local supermarket and purchased groceries to make a great meal. It was fun cooking in a Japanese home kitchen! Location couldn't be better.

Beautiful House
It was so nice to "come home" to Happiness after a nine-hour hike in Kumano. The house is a beautiful Japanese home complete with all modern appliances and amenities. The town is simply charming and the people were very friendly and nice. Mr. Matsumoto, the person in charge, welcomed us very nicely and even brought us to the supermarket in his Prius because he was concerned that we might not get there in time before it closed at 6 p.m. The supermarket was well-stocked and we were able to buy our supplies for dinner there. We had breakfast at the coffeeshop in town. Best iced coffee ever. I wish we had stayed longer. Oh, and not to forget the wonderful garden of the house! Personally, I would want to live in Chikatsuyu forever!

Happiness Chikatsuyu is a beautiful house all for yourself. It is very comfortable and clean. When we arrived they were waiting for us and kindly explained how everything worked. They do not provide food, but you can get your meals at the visitor center. They were also very kind and brought our food to the house for us.

Relaxing refuge from the trail
We loved our accommodations and found the place to be both beautiful and comfortable. It was spacious, clean, and had a wonderful outdoor patio for eating meals and relaxing. The owner graciously provided us with use of two bicycles with which we could explore the town. The full kitchen provided opportunities to cook our own meals (with ingredients from the coop grocery store, a 5 minute bike ride away). We would recommend adding salt and pepper to the kitchen's pantry (we really appreciated the cooking oil that was provided).

Very friendly owner who went out of her way to try to help us with our internet connection. Location is wonderful, the private garden cannot be more peaceful. Arrive early and leave late to fully enjoy the place. Fully equipped house, including laundry machine and soap. Kitchen utensils somehow poor, but manageable. Owner has 2 bikes that you can use to explore and buy groceries. Highly recommended!
