Our stay in Hatago MaSaRa was truly exceptional.
From the moment we arrived we felt right at home. The hosts were warm and kind, and went above and beyond to assist us with resolving issues related to our delayed luggage from the airline, showing genuine care and attention.
Location can’t be better, situated directly on the Kumano Kodo trail and with breathtaking views.
The traditional house is very beautiful and cozy, clean and well maintained.
Meals were a highlight, everything was delicious and homemade with care.
We couldn’t have asked for a better experience, we highly recommend it!

A cozy space with very charming owners
They were not my first choice because I was looking for a complete Japanese-style experience, and Hatago Masara, offering food with a French touch, was ruled out. I ended up at Hatago Masara because there were no other options available in Takahara. So this is the only reason why I didn't rate the food 5 stars, but everything was perfect and we had a great time and enjoyed our stay!

A very special place
We had an absolutely delightful experience in Takahara with Masa and Sara. The hosts were very welcoming, the house and the bedroom were great, and the meals were really good. It felt like we were their guests, enjoying a homemade meal, talking with them and the other visitors. Probably the best stay on our Kumano Kodo adventure.

Ubytování přímo na poutní cestě
ubytování je přímo na trase, vůbec jsme si nezašli. Měli jsme objednané dva pokoje a byli jsme tak v ubytování pouze my (já, manžel a dcera). HOstitelé byli milí. Bylo to naše první setkání s tradičním ubytováním v Japonsku a bylo to pohodlné. Nepotřebovali jsme vůbec nic - vše bylo pro nás připraveno - osušky, ručníky, kosmetika, oblek na spaní..... Výborná večeře a velmi dobrá snídaně. Děkujeme i za obědový balíček.

Charming hosts and excellent accomodation
Sara and Masa are very welcoming and lovely hosts, their guesthouse is well located and the rooms are super clean and comfortable. Sitting on their small balcony with its view over the mountains with a cold beer was the perfect way to end our first day on the Kumano Kodo. Their home cooked French-style food was also excellent. Highly recommended.

Wonderful accommodation along the trail
We were delighted to find Hatago MaSaRa right off of the trail as we entered Takahara. Unfortunately, we were far too early to check in, but Masa sent us down the road to the rest stop, where we had a snack and drink and soaked in the mountain air. After checking in, we enjoyed a beer and snack on the terrace at Hatago and then a lovely dinner and conversation with other lodgers and with Masa and Sara, who run the guesthouse. Masa was the manager for several years at KiriNoSato, and he and his wife Sara seem to really enjoy their guests. It was a very comfortable and welcoming stay.

Our stay at Hatago MaSaRa was a wonderful introduction to the Kumano Kodo experience. Our hosts were very friendly and kind and looked after us very well. Beautiful guesthouse & lovely hosts
Hatago MaSaRa is a beautiful guesthouse harmonizing traditional Japanese elements with a touch of modernity. Everything is neat, tidy and still very cozy and comfy.
Our hosts are a lovely couple and we could enjoy a few hours of conversation with them in the evening. We were captivated by the easy and honest talking as well by the french homemade meal they prepared for us.
They have some good wine for reasonable prices. MaSaRa also has a cafe shop and if you are lucky enough to find it open, we highly recommend you to stop by for a cup of coffee and the cake of the day.

Very comfortable and cosy minshuku
This is a wonderful minshuku - modern where it should be (sanitary equipment), old-fashioned where necessary. I enjoyed talking French with the lady of the house. I immensely enjoyed taking a bath in the enormous bathtub, as well as the French-style dinner, which evoked souvenirs from back home.

素敵なおもてなし
素敵なご夫婦と赤ちゃんに初日から癒されました。宿も道中沿いにあるため分かりやすく、チェックイン時間より早く到着しましたが、快くお迎えいただきました。先に神社へお参りを提案していただいたり、お部屋も日本式で落ち着いた雰囲気で外国の方にもきっと気に入っていただけると思いました。本当に連泊したいくらいでした。オーナーご夫婦や同じ宿泊された方と一緒に旅の話しができて楽しかったです。夕食もフランスの家庭料理を堪能できて量も丁度良くお手製オレンジジュースもとても美味しかったです。お風呂はカボス湯にしていただいてほっこりできました。翌日、少し体調を崩してしまい、ゆっくり朝食を食べれませんでしたが、後で食べれるようパック詰めしていたきました。しっかりお昼にお弁当と一緒に美味しく頂きました。今回、まさらさんに宿泊できて本当に良かったです。細かな気配りやゆっくりできる雰囲気は本当にお薦めです。また是非泊まりたいです♪

An oasis! A highlight of my trip!
The uphill trek from Takiriji-oji was tough in the heat and humidity. To be greeted by Masa, one of the owners, with an ice cold towel and then an ice cold water was just amazing! I loved sitting on the deck overlooking the mountains with a cold beer - a draught beer nonetheless! And the food was incredibly tasty. Owners Sara and Masa were lovely.

Extra well run guesthouse with french inspired cooking
The owner met me as the trail goes by his house. Its very well run in a formal Japanese style but the cooking is decidedly French. The veal blankette was so delicious and unexpected, I remember every bit of the meal. My Bento was more than enough for the next day's hike. It was quiet there but I liked putting on my provided Yukata and getting an after dinner drink at one of the nearby restaurants. 5 stars.

A beautiful place to stay on the first night of Kumano Kodo
This was a lovely start to our stay, right on the trail, so it was super easy to find! Masa and Sarah were great hosts and the french-style dinner was lovely! (and a treat to find in the Japanese countryside). The bathroom was clean and spacious and the view from the porch was super nice.

Delightful Hosts, Delightful View
Everything about this stay was delightful. The interior is newly renovated and is a beautiful mix of new facilities and old wooden beams. There are big, gorgeous views of the valley below and of the mountains above. Masa and Sarah are a kind and charming couple who put us at ease, and their East + West insights and their explanations about Japanese culture were a great help to introduce us to Japan. We especially enjoyed the bath (which seemed brand new and has a tub big enough for two people), the stories of the friendly community, and the wonderful calm of the house. We slept better than we'd slept in months.

A really charming beginning
The owners welcomed me with kindness, the hot bath was waiting for me, the food was very tasty, and the conversation interesting! The accommodation was very comfortable, and the views lovely. The place is exactly on the Kumano Kodo path, which is really convenient. It was made easy for me as the lady owner is French and could give me a lost of interesting information on the area.

日仏夫妻のおもてなし
古民家を改修した素敵なお宿でした。お部屋やお風呂、トイレも清潔で快適。ご夫妻の心安まるおもてなしで、古道歩きの疲れが癒されました。ディナーは日仏家庭料理のフルコースで、予想外の美食堪能ステイとなりました。

くつろげます

素敵な滞在
田辺市内から中辺路を本宮まで歩いた際、1泊利用させていただきました。
快適なお宿でゆっくり休めたのはもちろん、御夫妻の親切でさらに楽しい旅になりました。
周辺のことや古道にまつわるお話を聞かせていただきながら、美味しい御食事をいただけて本当に有難かったです。

大丈夫かとドキドキ始まった熊野古道歩きの最初の宿で、お二人の暖かいおもてなしと素晴らしい景色に、来て良かった！と思いました。

全般的の好印象であった。

Beautiful location, great food
The house has a wonderful location in the very small village at the end of Day 1 hiking. Sarah and Masa were really welcoming and prepared a delicious (albeit far too much) meal for us and a great lunch for the next day. Would strongly recommend. Everything was spotless.

The best place in the village
We loved the guesthouse, the location is just perfect as you enter the village, the house is located in front of the Takahara shrine, and it has beautiful terrace for sun basking. The guestroom for us was very comfortable, with easy access to the spacious bathroom and toilet. The meals were spectacular and very generous, the dinner was wow, and the bento box was plenty and delicious for our next day walk. All in all, we felt very welcome instantly, made felt like home and we loved chatting with Masa and Sara, like old friends, thank you

A Fantastic Way To Start My Pilgrimage
Many begin their pilgrimage with a night in Kii-Tanabe. I decided to walk to Takahara and spend my first night in Hatago Masara. It was the right decision. Walking a few kilometres allowed me to make a start on the trail and get comfortable with my pack before my first big day’s hike; and it allowed me to stay in the wonderful Hatago Masara.
My hosts Masa and Sara (hence Masara) made me very welcome in their wonderful home. The food was great, the house lovely, and the room very comfortable. Masa and Sara both speak excellent English, and Sara is French. They were able to give me an introduction to staying in a Japanese home, which was an ideal beginning for someone who had never stayed in a Ryokan before.
On the ground floor the dining room doubles up as a restaurant and it was the only place on the entire hike where I was able to get a draft beer. Excellent.
The house is on the Kumano Kodo in the sense that the walk goes right past the front door. You do not need to divert even 1m out of your way to visit.
Hatago Masara has been newly refurbished and it shows - everything is pristine. Hatago Masara is a great place, and an ideal launch pad for the Kumano Kodo. I recommend it very highly.
