Lovely Ryokan with great food and fantastic onsen!
Hotel Subaru was very comfortable, and our meals were delicious. The onsen is a great attraction, they have many different baths of different temperature, some outside and others inside.

3 star accommodating on my Kumano Kodo trail. Much better experience this time around (last stayed in 2023). The room was lovely with basic amenities but showers and bath can be had at the onsite onsen. Even if you have tattoos… don’t linger in the bath, but have a shower! It’s ok! The food was more to my taste this time around with an interacted menu of local and seasonal delicacies! Staff was impeccable and spoke a little English. I’d stay again for sure!

A perfect stay!
A very lovely Onsen hotel! The room was very large and comfortable. The food was absolutely delicous. The personnel were all very friendly and helpful. The shop had beautiful omiyage. The laundry service was very convenient. I enjoyed the time there very much. After a day's hike the onsen is just great!

Beutiful onsen hotel to relax.
Very nice accommodation at the Totsukawa Onsen. The location is really great for walking the Kumano Kodo trail. The meals are exceptionally good and the onsen is a great place to relax you after a hike.
The meals were really nice, with super friendly and helpful staff. Suprisingly, I met one of the staff members the following day also walking the Kohechi trail :)

Standard 3 star accommodation in Japan. The room was very nice and spacious. The ammenities adequate, but no shower or bath in the room. To shower with hot water you need to go outside of the hotel and shower at the pool facilities next door. The smell in there was not very nice, but the pool attendant was very courteous. Cold showers are available just prior to dipping your toes in the hot spring. Tattoos are not welcomed, which is standard. Dinner was a degustation menu. If you're a vegan or a vegetarian, make sure to let them know not to include fish. Breakfast was much more successful in my view. The food was fresh, just nothing special in terms of flavour. It presented really well (as per the pictures). I would recommend shopping around. But if needs must, it is ok.

We didn't expect much from what we thought was more of a typical hotel, and we were proven wrong! The hot springs / tubs were excellent, the dinner and breakfast was very good and the room was a very nice traditional Japanese room. We enjoyed our stay!

It was wonderful to rest in the hot bath after hiking on the Kumano Kodo, in the outside bath and in the bath tube made of the Japanese hinoki, cedar tree. Food was delicious and delicately made, served in an own compartment area, preserving privacy.

小辺路を西中バス停付近まで下りてきて昴に向かおうとしましたが、通りがかりの方が、工事のため道路が閉鎖していることを教えてくださいました。

Superb onsen in the mountains, very big room and a friendly staff. The meals were also very good. A bit pricey though, sure, but if you can only have one onsen during your trip then go for it.

Helpful front desk staff
The front desk staff was very helpful in calling around to enquire about the connections on public buses that we had to make from Hotel Subaru to Imoze and then to Omata because we couldn't follow through with our hiking plans as we had an injured ankle.
The hotel was very comfortable with an excellent onsen for I enjoyed the day the women had the beautiful onsen. The food was also extremely delicious and beautifully served.

When we reached the hotel; we saw a note saying kohechi road is closed due to falling rock. Upon asking the hotel staff; they told us to check again the next evening. On 23th morning, we asked and the hotel staff was very helpful - he called the relevant office to seek more info for us. And during night time, they took the initiative to help check again and came to our room to personally update us. Very thankful for their help!

小辺路3日目泊

An Amazing Onsen Hotel
This was our fourth night of our Kohechi trail hiking trip. Though the hotel itself was a good 6km of road walking from the Yakio bus stop and we were exhausted by the time we reached it, the location was great because it was close to the trail head for the next day of hiking. The hotel was spacious and the workers were friendly and helpful--I even found my name on the welcome board when we first entered. The baths were the best baths we've been to during our whole trip--there were outdoor baths, both communal and personal, and an indoor hot bath as well as a cold bath. It was so good that I had to dip in the onsen before leaving the next morning as well. The meals were unexpectedly extravagant, and we each got our own shabu-shabu pot and sashimi on top of the regular dishes. The room itself was also clean and came up a wooden roller, which was a great help to our sore legs. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here!

We spent a night here on the Kohechi. This is a wonderful hotel and spa, and would make a good place for any walkers to take a rest day also. The baths are superb. The staff do not speak fluent English, but went out of their way to help us. We sent our luggage by Takubin from Hotel Subaru to our temple stay in Koyasan; the staff was helpful and responsible in this task, and even sent us a refund when the charge was miscalculated.

We really loved Hotel Subaru after our third day hiking. The hotel is very big and accommodating, it was a nice change from the smaller places we had stayed. The biggest benefit was the wonderful onsen that has also outdoor pools. It was also open quite late which was a nice bonus. The food during dinner was really amazing and plentiful.

Overall we were fine at this hotel but the room was very small for four people and it smelt quite weird. I would rate it a more appropriate hotel for older people. It is an expensive hotel for what it offers. The food was good. Overall not bad.

The Hotel Subaru exceeded my expectations. It was totally off the beaten path, and, since it does not target the foreign tourists, it was a very authentic immersion into Japanese tourist environment. My only comment is that, if I remember right, they advertised as speaking English. But no, hardly any English spoken there.

Excellent facilities and service
The staff at the front desk was able to speak English. They were also helpful in making alternative arrangements. To make sure, there was no miscommunication, they arranged for complimentary English translation service. Also love their outdoor onsen. Wonderful!

Fantastic Location
We stayed here for one night. The room was a good size but the carpet was badly stained and the furniture was on the edge of shabby. Public areas and restaurant were lovely. Food was fine. We used the large indoor swimming pool which was a good facility to have as there was only a toilet and sink in the guest room so we were able to shower before and after our swim. We did not use the onsen. Hotel staff were very helpful and nice. We loved being here as it was so 'off the beaten track' for non-Japanese travellers so a true Japanese experience for us. The hotel is set in the grounds of one of the many, many world heritage sites in this beautiful area. Fantastic mountains, rivers, temples and shrines and don't forget to take a walk across the Totsukawa suspension bridge!

Nice hotel in a great location
The hotel is set in a secluded valley with a very relaxing air about the place. The food was good and the staff very helpful. The baths are made up of a collection of different types including one shaped like a giant ceramic tea cup. I'd happily stay here again.

lovely hotel with amazing onsen
The hotel was comfortable and the onsen were superb, especially the outdoor pool with all of the surrounding trees. My meals were very good and the service was quick and friendly.

Very Japanese
This is a high class and costly spa hotel for Japanese - i.e. not really geared for foreign tourists. But as non-Japanese, we really enjoyed our stay. The outdoor bath was a big feature - sitting in hot bath looking at beautiful mountains is a treat - trying not to think of climbing those mountains the next day! Very comfortable room in which we enjoyed chairs! Wonderful meals that just kept coming. Also we had a great packed lunch. There was very little English spoken or written around the hotel, but staff were helpful and friendly and we had no trouble with anything. Overall a good experience and for us, the highlights were spa and food!

The outdoor onsen was very good, perhaps on of the best. Clean and fresh hotel with friendly staff who drived us to the busstation.

Good onsen hotel on the Kumano Kodo Kohechi route
Helpful, friendly service even with our lack of Japanese language. We arrived before the normal check-in time but were given a room immediately. No in-room bath, but the onsen was great. The room was clean, spacious and very comfortable. My only (small) complaint would be that the carpet had spots that gave the room a kind of "tired" feel. Very nice meals.
