Onsen Business Hotel
Kawayu Matsuya is a practical, simple business hotel associated with Kawayu Midoriya Hotel. The rooms are western style and elevated Japanese style platform with futon. There is a hot spring bath in the hotel, but guests can also use the bathing facilities at Kawayu Midoriya for no extra charge. The outdoor baths at Kawayu Midoriya are set in the river bank. Meals are served at Kawayu Midoriya in the basement floor which features large windows looking onto the river. Guest rooms look onto the Oto river. Guests can also use the Kumano Kodo run by Kawayu Midoriya.

The hotel has a shuttle service that picked me up from the Kumano Hongu Heritage Center. The staff at the Heritage Centre called the hotel and requested the free shuttle pickup. The hotel shuttle also dropped me off at the trail head the next morning.

The hotel is divided in two. You can use the onsen at the other place just few minutes away. The location was spectacular just in front of the river. The room was well equipped with comfortable beds. Staff was very nice and helpful. Dinner was great!

Magical onsen and hot-water baths
Our stay in Kawayu Onsen after a day on Kohechi trail was truly enjoyable. The room was small and a little bit stuffy, but enough for two backpackers and a one-night of sleep. The onsen, which was located in the other hotel down the road, was great, we especially enjoyed the possibility of cooling down in the river. The food, which was served as a buffet in the other hotel, was very tasty with plenty of choice - we're lacto-ovo-pescetarians and we had lots to eat. Although going to the other hotel (50m from the one we were staying at) was something new for us, it wasn't a pain. The hotel is also about 1km from the trailhead, so keep that in mind!

Contrary to my expectations
Looking at the pictures on the website, I booked a room in this hotel, the room pictures on the website are also displayed very beautifully. But later on, it was discovered that it was a guest room at the nearby building. The price is three times more expensive than when I booked on Ctrip before. Even with dinner and breakfast, The room is not worth the price.

憧れの川湯温泉！
建物や設備は年季が入っていますが、それはそれで風情がありました。 畳の小上がりのある部屋（部屋のほぼ全部が小上がり！）でしたが、珍しく新鮮でした。部屋の窓から温泉街・山川が臨めて風情がありました。 お風呂や食事はみどり屋さんの施設を使わせてもらえます。 夕朝食のバイキングは豪華、特に夕食のお肉を堪能しました。 お風呂も川沿いの露天風呂にも入れて満足です。

We stayed here two nights so we could hit all three onsen towns and it worked out perfectly. They even picked us up from Yunsomine when we arrived at 6pm and saw it was another 40 minute walk

The room was clean and tidy. We walked a short distance down to road to the ‘sister’ hotel for our dinner and breakfast - the staff were so helpful when we were unsure how to navigate the hotpot buffet. The view from our hotel window and also from the dining area were amazing and a short walk to the Sennin buro. We enjoyed the onsen facilities to relax before continuing on the Kumano Kodo

Wonderful experience.
it's REALLY a relax and fresh took an onsen after 3 days hiking ^_^ thank you sooo much make this arrangement. We borrow spade and dig onsen beside the river. It's really unique experience.

雨が降っていたので、食事と風呂が130メートル離れた別棟だったのはちょっと不便でした。 食事はとてもおいしく、ハーフバイキングだったので、量を自分にちょうどよいように調節できてとてもよかったです。 温泉の泉質はとてもよかったので、ゆっくりしたかったのですが、何しろお湯の温度が高く、とてもゆっくり浸かっていられませんでした。さらに、あまり熱いお湯につかると、睡眠がとりにくくなります。これは個人的にではなく、医学上エビデンスの取れている事でもあります。もう少し低い温度に調節してほしかったです。 宿泊した旅館と同じ系列の浦島温泉や万青楼の風呂はもっと適温に調節されていて、ゆっくり浸かることができますよ。

当日、お部屋に余裕があったそうで、シングル予約のところ、ツインのお部屋を用意してくださいました。 感謝。 お食事も満足、手づくり感あり、美味しいし、ブッフェ方式なので量も適量頂けました。 滞在中起きた南海トラフ地震よ余震と思われる地震により、帰途の特急電車の運休が判明した際にも、急遽手配した夜行バスのチケットの印刷を快諾してくださいました。 大変助かりました。 感謝。 河辺の露天風呂も、川遊びも、予想を超える楽しさでした。

Kawayu Matsuya was conveniently located in the Kawayu Onsen area and is close to the local bus. The guest room was spacious by Japanese standards and the public baths were uncrowded and clean. Dinner and breakfast were located at a partner hotel, a couple of metres from Kawayu Matsuya. The buffet-style meals were delicious and there was a great range of foods to try.

Great Stay
I loved the location of this hotel right on the river in a very quiet village. After hiking it felt great to soak in the onsen, especially the outdoor one next door. Getting the local bus to and from trailheads worked well for me. The meals were excellent and the dining room enjoys a beautiful view onto the river.

Run-down hotel with access to great onsen and good restaurant next door
The hotel itself is in pretty poor condition. Our room had stains on the wall and the carpet. There was no bathroom attached to the room (but there was a toilet) or on the corridor. It seems like you just clean yourself in the onsen (which we did). This was similar in other Japanese style hotels in the area. The dinner and the breakfast were in another hotel, and both were great. You can eat both Japanese and European style dishes. You get a yukata for your stay, but the size selection reflects Japanese distribution (i.e. you won't find ones tailored for 190+ cm tall); the large size ran out when we were there. There is an onsen, and another in the hotel where you get dinner. We tried the other hotel's onsen. There are gendered pools indoor and mixed ones outside (for which they provide the bathing suites) next to the river where we could see herons, crows and other birds fly pass or alight on the bank. Great experience! Bus stop is nearby, and if you walk through the tunnel towards Hongu, you can catch further buses there. We were initially disappointed that we did not get a room at the Yosemine onsen, but having tried out both, this place was better as a bathing experience.

More like a business hotel than anything else, looks rather old, but was functional and affordable. The big plus is being able to use their sister property's onsen, which is the best in Kawayu, other than bathing free at the big river bath.

Fantastic meals but average accomodation
Rooms are tired and in need of renovation. The onset was nothing particularly special. You did have access to the nicer ones at the sister hotel but was personally too tired to visit. The meals were provided at the sister hotel and they were epic. Beef hotpot, appetisers and sashimi for starters. Then access to a full, wide variety buffet. Honestly the meals made this fantastic. It is an hour long walk from Kumano Hongu Taisha, along the roadside. There is a bus but it's infrequent. There is however a bus stop right out front for when you want to leave in the morning.

Average accommodation
Room was very average - nice outlook but smelt of smoke (I believe this hotel doesn't offer non-smoking rooms?). The services at the Midoriya (dinner, breakfast, onsen, transfer to trail heads, super friendly staff) more than made up for the average room though. My recommendation would be: if you can afford it, stay at the Midoriya otherwise stay in Yunomine.

The best of the best!
The service in all the Guestrooms that we have used are great! The foods are great (can't flex this enough)! If time permits, I will book this guestroom again! Our stay in Wakayama is so stisfying because of the great service that you have provided.

After four days on the Kohechi Trail, this was a good place to rest and relax. The Matsuya is a small accommodation block with all meals, onsen, laundry and retail facilities at a sister hotel just 100 metres down the road.

A full-service hotel.
Unlike other accommodations in this trip, this one is a full-service hotel.You get everything you'd expect from a hotel-comfortable bed, (small) private bathroom, reception. The meals and the onsen are available at the nearby Midori hotel which is a short walk. The outdoor onsen is also available on the riverbank. This offers a rare experience for me. The dinner buffet is fantastic with lots of selection to choose. One drawback is about the internet which the hotel uses the public Wakayama Free Wifi which is very slow and good for 15 minutes per registration only. The hotel provides a free shuttle bus service to Ukegawa where the trailhead to Koguchi is.

朝食の時間が7：00からでしたので、出発に間に合わず最初は1泊2食付でしたが、素泊まりへ変更しました。 温泉のあるビジネスホテルと言う感じです。部屋は可もなく不可もなく、普通のへやです。お風呂はみどりやへ行ったのですが、往復が寒かったです。川の露天風呂は熱過ぎて入れず楽しみが半減してしまいました。ただ熊野古道歩きで疲れていたため、温泉はうれしかったです。 また、川湯温泉は水害で道路が崩れたりなど、大変な状況でしたが、復興に力を入れられているようでした。仙人風呂は時期がずれてしまいましたが、次回入りたいと思います。

We made use of both the indoor and outdoor onsen. Both were excellent. We loved the river onsen experience, a highlight of the trip. The food was very good quality and interesting and the staff were helpful in explaining how to cook and eat food which was unusual for us.

The building itself is too old, so room was too small and too crowded. If it’s a business hotel, it MIGHTbe OK. However, it was not suitable place to stay for vacation. The location was great near to bus stop and with the view. We regretted not to reserve Midoriya even if we would pay more. We just did not know the old building of Matsumoto.

Need for no smoking room
The onset was great, and the food lovely - lots of choice from a buffet as well as the set meal at the table. The trouble with the actual room was that it was in a hotel which was a 100m down the street from where meals were served, which was slightly inconvenient due to the rain. Worst of all previous occupants had smoked in the room and the smell was not pleasant.

ビジネスホテルでした。禁煙室をお願いしましたが、消臭室でした。部屋は臭くなかったが、部屋の前の談話室からのたばこの匂いがしてがっかりでした。日曜日の宿泊で空いていてお風呂は独り占めできました。食事はグループ旅館まで歩いていかないといけないのは不便かな。そちらのお風呂も入れるのは良いことでした。

Nice location near a beautiful outdoor onsen
Sincerely, I didn't enjoy this accommodation for its lack of personality and warmness. Even if the reception staff was really polite, they wasn't able to speak english. And i didn't enjoy the fact they haven't restaurant service so i had to go to the near Midoriya restaurant for dinner and breakfast: the meals weren't so good as in other accommodations. The only feature you can enjoy is the outdoor onsen, really near and nice

I was travelling on my own during Golden Week, so this was the only place available in the Kawayu/Yunomine Onsen area, but it suited my needs perfectly. I had a small single western style room, but it had a nice view of the river and a window that could be opened to let in fresh air. The onsen in the hotel weren't the flashiest I'd experienced in Japan, but they certainly did the job of soothing muscles after a long day of walking. As a guest, I had my meals at the hotel a short walk away. There was a great buffet breakfast and dinner. I was also able to utitlise the onsen in this hotel, but chose to go to the outdoor public bath instead. This hotel was close to the Kawayu Onsen bus top and it was close to the tunnel to walk through to Yunomine onsen.

Great value
One of the cheaper hotels in terms of price, but was a brilliant bed after being out all day. Great value and location. Really good for those travelling on a budget and doesn't suffer as a result. Right on the river and also allows access to the river onsen.

Excellent Stay
I wish I would have been able to stay longer at the Kawayu Matsuya. The room was really nice, clean, and the beds are quite comfortable. This was an extraordinarily great value! Being able to use the onsen at Midori was also really nice. I can't tell you how wonderful it is to sit outside in the onsen, listen to the frogs, and watch the river flow by. Truly a unique experience!

A decent budget property with great service
The hotel staff were really helpful. We arrived late and the picked us up from the bus stop in their van. While you have to walk a bit down the road to use the baths at another property, it wasn't much trouble and the outdoor baths right next to the river were really nice. The food was a combination set menu and buffet.

Somewhat typical business hotel in the middle of Onsen Resort. Located quite far from Kawayu Sennin Buro, one has to walk about 800 meters from the hotel to use the onsen. Anyway, the hotel was convenient.

Would not be my first choice
Kawayu Matsuya would not be my first choice for accommodations in the area. To be honest, I'm not impressed with the options available for single travellers in the Kawayu Onsen area. The hotels are expensive, and a number of minshukus do not take single travellers. I would encourage other single travellers to consider staying in another part of the Hongu Area and doing a day trip to Kawayu. Matsuya is an older hotel, kinda run down. It's very grey inside the building, almost depressing. It blows my mind that I spent over 100 dollars Canadian to stay there. I will say, however, that the room was okay. The sheets were clean and it was nice to have my own bathroom. The food is served buffet style in the basement of Kawayu Midoriya, an upscale hotel nearby, but the food - dinner in particular - was quite subpar. You also eat in the basement of the Midoriya, in a room with no windows and away from the Midoriya guests. There is no internet service in Matsuya, but you can use wifi in Midoriya's lobby, which is a bright open space. The best part of my stay at Matsuya was access to Midoriya's shuttle service where they will essentially just drive you somewhere in the Hongu Area. They will also pick you up if it is a reasonable time. So after dinner I visited friends at Yunomine Onsen and then called and was picked up when I was done. The staff at Midoriya were also exceptional and friendly. Matsuya has small baths of their own, which I found fine, but you do have access to Midoriya's baths as well - which I did not take advantage of. Since you have access to a large number of the perks of staying at Midoriya for half the price, I would suggest that Midoriya is also not worth the money. So, unless you really enjoy staying in larger hotels, book yourself into a minshuku in the area with a good rating. If you can't get a spot but really want to stay in Kawayu Onsen, then stay in one of the hotels - Matsuya if you don't care that much about ambiance, Kinokuni if you care a bit more, Midoriya if you care a lot. Seriously consider a package EXCLUDING dinner. It just isn't worth it. Otherwise you could also stay in another part of Hongu and do a day trip down to Kawayu to experience the riverside onsens.

Overestimated Hotel
This Hotel is absolutely overestimated. We had a very negative experince. There was smoking smell both in the room and in the toilet. The rooms are old and very small. I woke up at 5.30 in the morning because of a continuing noise and I was not able to sleep anymore because this nois continued till 8 in the morning. No one speak a good english and the breakfast was nothing special. I would also add that the picture of the hotel reported on your website is not the right one, it is of the associated hotel. This is misleading and somehow deceptive. You should change it immediately! We were very disappointed with this hotel and the price is really outrageous in relation with the service!!!!!

Superb Guest Experience
My wife and I spent three nights at Kawayu Matsuya and can not speak highly enough of the experience. Food was absolutely great. Staff were wonderful, friendly, helpful and efficient -even providing great first aid when my wife cut her hand whilst trekking Kumano Kodo. The river side onsen are a wonderful experience also. The only slight negative is that there is little else in Kawayu but then one needs little else when staying at Matsuya! Recommended most highly to all.

Kawayu is a classic turist trap. It is a tiny, shabby, ugly "village", difficult to access, nothing to do there, unlike you travel in the winter when the big public onsen is available. Nobody speaks English and they have no intention to help you in anything. This was the worst bit of my Japan experience, no contest.

We have enjoyed Japan and specially japanese people. We have stayed 18 days in Japan and the hotels that we stayed were very good but the only one that disappointed us a little was the Kawayu Matsuya Hotel because it was dirty and the private bathroorm smelled badly. Simple hotel
This was a nice place to stay the night after a long walk. It was a simple hotel, western style mostly. The baths downstairs were excellent after a long walk, and I also had the opportunity to check out the kawayu river just outside. The man who checked me in was friendly and willingly went out of his way to explain where everything was. The hotel next door served breakfast and dinner, both buffet style with plenty of good food (both japanese and western food).

Perfect, no-frill hotel to land after the trek
Very good price/quality relation. A no-frill hotel. You need to take a bus from Kumano Hongu Taisha, though. The bus runs approximately every two hours. But the place is then very well connected with Shingu, if you are heading out from there. (awesome views on the river from the rooms)

Pleasant stay here. The first room smelt very strongly of cigarettes. The gentleman who checked me in was most kind in offering a second room (albeit a twin room) with excellent river views. The hotel onsen was good and the use of next door's hotel (Midoriya) was great as they have outdoor pools. However, some English explanation of this would have been helpful. Only found this out by accident. Buffet breakfast in Midoriya was good. Buffet dinner the night before was less exceptional and expensive. Was surprised when asked for payment for the room the next day. Was happy to pay for the optional dinner but not the room as this would have been sorted out through prepayment upon reservation.

The hotel itself was ok, the room was clean, but a bit small. For the price it was nowhere near the experience we had in terms of personal connection and overall comfort at the minshuku. The onsen arrangement with the other hotel was very nice and the dinner was pretty good as well. Overall it was a decent place to stay and I have no regrets about staying there.

An excellent and cheap option!
We booked a double twin room in Kawayu Matsuya through Kumano Travel. It was our choise because of their price, (very) much cheaper than other options. People in reception talked very basic English but enough to get by; adding that to their good attitude to understand and being understood made things easier. Our room was the typical small twin from a business hotel but enough for our needings; the only thing we would complain was a slight smoke smell (maybe if we would have advised that we were no smokers this could have been diferent). We had a full equiped bath&toilet in our room. The hotel had its own onsen hot spring bath, but we did not use it because we were invited to use for free the fantastic rotemburo outdoor bath of the more expensive Midoriya Hotel. Having said that, we would like to express our gratitude to the Midoriya crew, as they treated us like if we were sleeping in the Midoriya itself; they even gave us the option to use the free shuttle to Hosshimonoji the morning after we arrived. Most probably would book there again when returning to Kumano.

Nice Little Hotel
We spend one night in Kawayu Matsuya to enjoy river onsen. There is no triple room in the hotel so three of us has to split two and one. The room is pretty small but comfortable. Please try Japanese Futon bed - it's really soft and warm! I understand that the in house onsen bath is temporaly closed (the staff speak a little English) so we are refered to the next door bathing at hotel Kawayu Midoriya. Their in and outdoor onsen is big and not crowded at all - just like we have a private onsen. The hotel provide outdoor bath suit onsen for free.Try the early morning outdoor onsen - impressive. Be careful as there is no any restaurants open while we stayed there (around 5 PM to 9 AM) so we have to get a dinner buffet at hotel Kawayu Midoriya and skip the breakfast.
