Great stop for a night while doing the trail
Kawayu Matsuya was a great stop for a night while doing the trail. It’s very convenient, especially if you just need a simple and easy place to rest after a long day of walking. Everything worked well, and the location is excellent: very close to the bus stop, which made logistics easy. Each room has a kettle, which was a lifesaver for us since we were exhausted from the walk and could quickly make some noodles without needing to go anywhere. The place is super quiet, which made for a good night’s rest. It’s definitely quite basic and spartan, but it was clean and perfectly functional. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it if you’re looking to spend extra time relaxing in the area or want lots of facilities nearby, but as a practical overnight stop on the trail, it’s absolutely perfect.

Kawayu Matsuya as an affordable accomodation
When reviewing affordable accommodations, I usually try to balance my expectations with the price. However, during our Kumano Kodo trip, we stayed three nights in three different places that were all very similar in price and overall offering. Unfortunately, Kawayu Matsuya was by far the worst of the three. Being an unmanned accommodation should not excuse the poor maintenance and overall condition of the building. The photos shown online for example in booking are accurate in terms of layout, but in reality everything feels much more worn and deteriorated. There was also a noticeable tobacco smell inside, which made the stay less pleasant. To make matters worse, it is an unmanned accomodation but the self check-in/check-out machine didn’t work—neither on arrival nor departure. Thankfully, after contacting support, friendly staff assisted us and resolved the issue within about 15 minutes. Another inconvenience was the lighting: we almost had to sleep with the lights on because the remote switch didn’t work. The batteries were visibly corroded, which likely explains the problem. I should note that we didn’t use the baths, so I can’t comment on that aspect. On the positive side, the towels, sheets, and basic amenities were fine, and the views were actually excellent—probably the best feature of the property. Overall, I would not recommend this place. In the context of an otherwise wonderful Kumano Kodo experience, this was unfortunately the weakest stay.

The hotel has a shuttle service that picked me up from the Kumano Hongu Heritage Center. The staff at the Heritage Centre called the hotel and requested the free shuttle pickup. The hotel shuttle also dropped me off at the trail head the next morning.
