Delightful. We had wished there was a location to sit outside and enjoy a cup of tea and melonpan, but we contented ourselves with the concrete ledge of the building. The view was breathtaking!

Traditional house at Koguchi
Very charming traditional Japanese house. Walking distance from Koguchi but you have the chance to be picked up from the owner how was very kind and welcoming. The food was delicious and very different from what we had had before. Thank you for this experience!

A special place!
What a lovely owner, so nice. Great pick up & drop off. Located up the mountains, just a few minutes drive away, in a very remote and peaceful location, with lovely views. Atmospheric. It's a bit more basic than some of the other more expensive places we stayed in - the owner is gradually restoring the whole house - but is excellent value, has a warm and comfortable kitchen/diner, a good bathroom, and we had a brilliant venison hotpot supper, & a good lunch box.

Beautiful authentic stay!
Naoko was the perfect host - she picked us up and dropped us at the bus station, cooked delicious meals and did everything to make us feel welcome. The place is a gorgeous, the bath is great and the surroundings are beautiful and quiet. Loved every aspect of our time here!

Home away from home
One of my favourite stays of the whole trip. Naoko-san is the perfect host. She picked me up from the store and I instantly felt at home in the cosy guesthouse she runs. With only two rooms it is intimate and pleasant. Everything is spotlessly clean and it was a very relaxing place to stay. The next morning she drove me in the rain to the starting point of the walk back to Hongu. Can't recommend @koguchi enough. Just loved it.

I like this hostel. Although the location is a bit remote, the host provides quick and immediate pick-up. The meals are also quite good. It is very quiet at night, and you can relax and rest peacefully. The surroundings are also very quiet. It is a good and affordable hostel for my trip.Also, the free laundry and drying facilities were great.

The epitome of serenity
Beautiful guesthouse by the river. The host was very friendly and easy to talk to. She was able to accommodate my early start time of hitting the trail at 6am with breakfast at 5:30am. Delicious meals! The guesthouse was very spacious with excellent shower and bathroom amenities. Had a truly wonderful experience!

My favourite stay
I loved @koguchi. It’s a little bit outside town but Kimurasan picked me up within 5-10 minutes of calling her. It’s in a beautiful spot in the mountains. The futon was the most comfortable of all the places I stayed in. The bathroom and toilet are shared with other guests, but separate so can be used at the same time. There are laundry facilities which is great. The deer curry for dinner was delicious - this is coming from someone who mostly eats vegetarian! Fantastic hospitality, I really enjoyed it here.

Mountain Retreat
This is a traditional Japanese home tucked away on the mountainside. The quiet owner has to come and collect the guests as it would be tremendously complicated to get to the guesthouse otherwise. Better instructions of how to reach the owner would be helpful, particularly through Signal or WhatsApp. Nestled into a mountainside, along a stream, we had the guesthouse to ourselves among plum trees and kiwi vines. It was very relaxing. Because of the remote nature of the home, and the fact there were no meals, we suggest having snack options available to purchase, such as was the case with the alcohol in the refrigerator available for self pay. We appreciated having access to a washer/dryer to catch up on laundry, the guest book with countless notes of people from all over the world who previously gave life to the home, and the board games.

A Dream in the koguchi hills
Naoko has a small but beautiful guesthouse in the koguchi hills. When you arrive in koguchi and call her she will be there a few minutes later for the Shuttle Transport. She is a very good cook and a lovely host with guests from all over the world. The a two sleeping rooms, so if you are a couple you probably share the guesthouse with other guests which offers interesting talks.

Nice cosy homestay
Had an enjoyable stay at this property. Host is very prompt in her replies, and very obliging to our requests. Picked us up at Minataka store and dropped us next morning at trailhead. Rooms were cozy, sitting area has a heated pad beneath to warm us up. Two rooms, and shared bathroom. Its quite cold walking to the bathroom at this time of year, but the bath is amazing, with the host filling up the tub for us, just like a private onsen. Food is nice, but may not be enough if you have a big appetite. Its a one pot meal for us, nice and hot, but not much of variety. Area quite remote, so may have to pack extra food/snacks for bigger eaters. Tatami bed has no sheets over, just a mattress protector, which is quite weird for us, but we are only staying one night, so we just made do. Pillows not comfortable. No conditioning but they provide a portable heater during winter. Only the living/eating area has air conditioning.

A welcome break.
While this accommodation is a short drive out of the village and away from the Kumano Kodo track our hostess was very welcoming and friendly. Once we had arrived in the village we rang her and within 10 - 15 minutes she arrived in her car to pick us up and take us back to her home. Our accommodation was made up of three traditional Japanese rooms, a central sitting room with two large bedrooms, one on either side of the sitting room. The rooms were separated from each other with traditional sliding walls. We also had access to a small kitchen area in the dining room. The bathroom and toilet were shared with our hostess, but this wasn't a problem. We arrived to find that a hot bath had been run for us to use as a small onsen to sooth our tired muscles - bliss. Our supper and breakfast were lovely and our traditional Japanese beds could not have been more comfortable and warm. In the morning our hostess drove us the short way back into the village so that we could continue our trek. Thank you for a wonderful visit.

The host came picked me up from the designated spot albeit earlier than the stated check in time. The whole house is clean, the futon is comfy, had a nice relaxing night after the hike. Great secluded location with simple meals
If you have the motivation, walk the 2km from the trail head to this accommodation - you won't regret the views. Otherwise the host can pick you up from Koguchi. Simply but lovely accommodation. There was a washing machine if you need it. Simple meals and there was a fridge with cold drinks/beer at very reasonable prices...might have had a few! Host was great and dropped us at the bus stop/trail head in the morning.

Perfect stay in quiet Koguchi
Our host Naoko welcomed us with a hot bath prepared. Host has converted her grandmother's old house to a modern guesthouse, with nice touches everywhere. The dinner, sukiyaki with deer meat is one of the best we have enjoyed during our Kumano walk. And good warm breakfast to get us moving. Miss Naoko also kindly pick up and drop us back to the tral head at Koguchi little town.

@Koguchi provides a home away from home
4 of us stayed at @Koguchi for a night. We had the place all to ourselves. The house was tastefully decorated. By the time we got there, the bath was already drawn. It didn't get much better than taking a bath after a long day of hiking. Naoko-san was extremely efficient in meal preparation, had a great disposition. We just wish we could speak better Japanese so we could learn more about her.

Just what we needed four days into our trek. Naoko has done a wonderful job renovating her grandmother’s old house, which is set in an absolutely stunning valley that feels straight out of a Miyazaki movie (seriously, this village/slice of heaven was the most beautiful place that we saw in our entire trip to Japan). We were grateful to have her pick us up (and drop us off) 10 minutes down the road in Koguchi to save our legs the extra hike. A lovely and restorative bath was pre-filled and preheated for our arrival. The house was sparsely decorated but comfortable, with nice touches like games and a map for travelers to mark where they’re from. We booked the whole house to ourselves and would recommend doing the same - with another couple it would have felt cramped. After three days of kaiseki, dinner was exactly what we needed: simple, hearty, and delicious venison curry over rice. It’s like Naoko read our minds. We slept well on our comfortable futons, snoozing to the sound of the dunk-able stream right outside the shoji.

This guesthouse was beautiful and the host was also fantastic. Beautiful spot outside of town. AC in the kitchen/dining room but not in the bedroom (the only time we encountered this in Japan, which was rough given the heat at the time). Simple and clean cooking facilities, although tricky to find substantial food in the town (we did not include meals).

Idyllic little homestead
Situated a 30 min walk up from Koguchi itself in a stunning valley, it is isolated. Not that anything much is going on in Koguchi! But the detour is worth it. The old house has been lovingly restored and we immediately found ourselves at home. There is a hot bath to soak tired legs and use of the laundry facilities. The food (venison curry and a western egg and sausage breakfast) was a welcome break to the traditional banquets. The charming host can pick up and drop down to the trail at Koguchi upon request.

The host picked me up at the end of the hike and drove me to the trail head the next day which was really appreciated. The home cooked dinner and breakfast was great and the place was comfortable and very clean.

Great spot to stay while walking the Kumano - the owner was lovely, house clean and comfortable, and food tasty. Lovely and peaceful overnight falling asleep with only the sound of running water nearby.

Beutiful location.
The accommodation might require a bit of additional walk for the Kumano Kodo trail, but the owner offers a shuttle service and even if you walk the additional 2-3 km (one way), the place is really nice and worthwhile the additional trip. The building is really nice and the owner is super friendly.

Pleasant stay
The lady was very friendly and the pick up was smooth. The guesthouse was nice and clean. However, for us the food was not enough at all and there was no opportunity to get more. We ordered one vegan meal and one „normal“ meal and my boyfriend had to share the vegan hotpot with me which was not much after a full day of hiking. In the morning we only got one toast each. Thankfully we took a bus and didn’t have to walk the next day.
So if you aren’t a great eater no problem otherwise it could be too little food.

@Koguchi is situated in a remote area on the hillside. The owner comes to collect you from Koguchi and is absolutely delightful She made a wonderful hotpot - probably the best I had tasted. In the morning we were dropped at the bus stop for our onward travels. Such a lovely location, a real insight into rural life in Japan.

A relaxing gem in the countryside
It was a little hard to find the public phone and call but the pickup was quick. The location is about ?10-15 minute drive from the start of the trail to Nachi. I loved everything about the place, especially the beautiful old and new woodwork.

About 25 min walk from the trailhead. We walked, though host would have collected us. Little mini style hot tub, already warmed to 42C when we arrived, which was great. Host explained everything to us and we were grateful to be able to use the washing machine and dryer on site. Very comfortable nights sleep on the futon due to an extra layer of foam bedding supplied. Dinner was deer hotpot, very nice. Breakfast, Western style, was adequate for our needs. We got a lift back to the trailhead at a time we specified.
Over all a pleasant and relaxing experience staying here. Would recommend.

Best place to stay in Koguchi if you have a party of 4 as you will have the privacy of the whole guest house and being looked after by Naiko San.
Removed from Koguchi town centre with Naiko San ferrying you to/fro hike routes but that really adds to the charm.

We loved our stay at @koguchi! Our host was so lovely and she prepared the most delicious boar sukiyaki for dinner and egg, sausages and toast for breakfast. The onigiris with a personal note she packed for our lunch were a wonderful lunch on the Kumano Kodo trail! Note that the house is a bit outside of Koguchi, we chose to walk it (about 2 miles) but you can also call her for pickup. The next day she drove us to the trailhead which was really nice!

A special kominka experience
A beautiful classic home stay just outside of Koguchi — 30 min walk or 10 min drive. Really unique experience to stay in a kominka in a little farming village. Great, simple home cooked food from Naoko-San and a nice, renovated bath.

A peaceful place !

What a lovely little house overlooking the forest with it's own little stream. We enjoyed dipping our feet in after a long day's hike. Our host was delightful. We arrived a little early but this was no trouble to her. The house was clean, spacious and the views gorgeous. She cooked us a delicious curry for dinner and a substantial breakfast before we headed off on another day of hiking. I would recommend having snacks with you as the town is not stocked for visitors. Drinks are available at a cost to you which was nice. The accomodation is a few km's out of town so make arrangements if you don't want to walk the extra distance. However the walk is very pretty.

Loved my stay here. The host is super sweet and picked me up quickly from Koguchi to give me a ride to the house. The house is super clean and comfortable, bath is nice to use after a day hiking. Location is pretty and the food was delicious. She made me a great japanese curry for dinner which I enjoyed! I did not hear great things from people who stayed in town at the school, so if this is available, it is highly recommended!

Very cute little cottage
Delightful cottage - it's a bit remote, but Naoko picked us up and cooked really good food. There is only one AC unit in the attached apartment, so it might be a little warm in the summer. It was hot the day we were there, but being in the Spring in the mountains it cooled off in the evening. The food was really good and Naoko was fun to talk to. The garden around the house and the little stream in back were very nice too.

A special stay along the Kumano Kodo
Our stay with Naoko was so lovely and she is such a sweet host. She picked us up from Koguchi to save us the extra 35min hike up through the valley to her place. We were welcomed and made to feel at home immediately; a hot bath had already been drawn, something we welcomed after a day hiking. Her grandmother’s home is traditional Japanese style (which we loved) and has been renovated, so is clean and tidy. Our tatami room was very comfortable and we had access to the entire house, which felt very private. How great is it also to be in the mountains. The food served was a delicious homemade curry and the lunchbox was filling and personable. Thank you again Naoko, we hope to return and stay with you again one day!

Cozy place in mountain
Naomi has renovated her grandmother’s place in the mountains above koguchi which made for a pretty overnight place on the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trail. Communication was good and and she picked us up from the store in town with good cheer. We had a group of 5 hikers, and we appreciated her adjusting the space to accommodate our 5th person. A wonderful spot with a wonderful hostess
This is such a special guesthouse. The hostess Naoko is very sweet and generous. She provides rides to and from the house, draws up a hot bath when you get in (so nice after hiking the Kumano Kodo all day), and makes absolutely delicious meals. Her deer sukiyaki was one of my best dinners in Japan, and the little note on the lunch bento (a great variety of onigiri) really cheered me up when I was soaked from a downpour the next day. The guest kitchen is well stocked with free tea, and drinks and snacks for purchase. The bed is SO comfortable -- much appreciated after a long day of hiking -- and the whole place has beautiful views. Absolutely recommend!

Amazing Night @koguchi
One of the best places we stayed in Japan. We got a ride from the trailhead to the guesthouse and back again the next morning.
The food was awesome. We had a hotpot meal with wild deer, mushrooms, and fresh vegetables. My partner and I had not tried anything similar in Japan, we are so glad we got to try it. Dinner was phenomenal, our host is an amazing cook. We got a western style breakfast in the morning with fresh eggs, sausage, and, toast. Lunch was also packed for us!
It was so accommodating and we got to ask questions about the local area. When we got there, a hot bath was already ready for us! Perfect after a long day of hiking.
The beds are the mattresses on the mat flooring but these were the best we tried along the hike. I wish we could have spent every night here.

It's a nice house with spacious room and all the amenities hikers need: washer, hot shower/bath, comfy rooms, etc. However, it's 2km away from the Kumano Kodo, although the host offers to drive you to the trailhead but you still need to find your ways from the bus stop or the end of the trail yourself. Dinner was a good hotpot but could be more plentiful for bigger hikers finishing a long day's hike. The breakfast and lunch are also on the ligh side. Pack your energy bars or you may feel a bit hungry the next day.

It's far from the town, but we don't mind at all.
It made us a bit nervous when we walked into Koguchi town where literally there was no one on the streets. But we followed the instruction and called Ms. Kimura from the payphone across Minakata shop and she picked us up right away. The place was lovely, surrounded by fields and forests. The room was cozy, and it really helped that there was a laundry and drying machine. I really wish we could have stayed longer, because we fell in love with the place. From past reviews, we were expecting to be served wild boar for dinner, but we were pleasantly surprised that Ms. Kimura served venison sukiyaki-style instead.

Thank you so much Naoko for a wonderful stay. This beautifully renovated cottage used to be her grandmother’s home, so there are traditional elements mixed with contemporary.
I loved waking up looking out at the fog on the mountainsides. Naoko is a wonderful cook, I loved the meals prepared by her.
I stayed here while walking along the Kumano Kodo, and it is only a very short (10min or so) detour off the track, for which Naoko offered to drive me back to the trailhead.
