What a great BBQ!
The supper was excellent, sitting with other pilgrims enjoying an in-house BBQ with delicious Fish, Meat and Vegetables. What a great couple who serviced this delicious food!

The dinner meal was good and obviously some trouble taken to prepare it.
I think you could mention as part of your package (email instructions) to those doing the trek that they will pass the accommodation on the way to Tsugizakura-oji and having reached the oji, they have to walk back to the accommodation.

Disappointed, surprisingly, by Japanese standard.
GOOD:
Location along the trail. Very convenient.
The young staff member who accidentally showed up tried to be helpful whilst he appeared to have no clue how this happened.
NOT SO GOOD:
1) No one was at the inn when we arrived at 3ish and until 6ish.
A paper a note placed the dinning table read the group under my name that would arrive on 18/3. It meant our lodging was expected.
2) A young man showed up after 6ish but he didn't mean to cater to us. He said he came over to check if things in the property were in order because it had been raining non-stop.
3) The property itself was like a store room cramped with items that we -
(a) don't use, e.g. a big, old refrigerator - not in use coz no electricity on and the sliding doors were laced with moss; and
(b) can't use, e.g. coffee machine was too dusty and dirty to use; two bulky armchairs at the entrance were too heavy to be removed but if we sat on there, we would block our own way and the chairs were designed for people to sit and change shoes easily; there was another bulky armchair that occupied quite some space that we needed for moving inside the tatami area
4) Cleanliness - The floor was like it had not been mopped for a long time. Spider net was visible on the wooden beams and some corners of the living room. The towel that i used (not all towels though) was found to have some big dirt marks. Obvious tea stints were seen inside many glasses and cups. (i can share pics of the towel, cups and the spider net).
5) No dinner served - We cooked by ourselves with rice, vegetables and some pork in the kitchen (the pork had been unpacked and was kind of expired but we still ate coz we were hungry).
6) The young man who showed up insisted cooking the breakfast for us the following day. He also helped replace the croissants that had expired with fresh ones. Unfortunately only 1 croissant and 1 egg per person (we dare not drink coffee made from the machine) can be provided - definitely not enough as we would have a long hiking day. Guess the ration was a policy set by the property owner. At the end, the young man made us some rice balls with rice we didn't finish the night before.
7) No curtains for the windows of the shower room. On the day of our stay it rained quite heavily so people from outside if any can hardly peek. On a fine day, those who walk up a bit of the grass slope can see what's inside the shower room.
OVERALL:
To be honest, we were given some money back for the missing dinner (which was meant to have abalone and other seafood etc) but we'd rather have a proper chef cooking a decent Japanese dinner for us.
We give No Rating to the category of "Reception & Service" as the young man who showed up didn't mean to serve us. We learned that the original server at our inn was quite old (personally I hope his or her absence was not due to sickness or injury but simply that he/she was too old and forgot the duty, and we understand aging population is now a major issue in Japan).
My friends did go to another Hagi Inn nearby hoping it can tell where we can seek help right after our arrival. The staff there said their inn was separate from ours, meaning they were not in a position to offer assistance. But we believe both Hagi inns belong to the same owner.
To be fair, the young man did his best to help. He performed the cooking and cleaning duties, and listened to our complaints which were outside his job scope...haha.
I hate to say this - many of our group members felt that what we experienced was quite disappointing and this was very rare in Japan.
There were a lot the property owner can do to ensure everything including the property itself is proper, in order to improve the guests' experience.
PS - Facts/background:
We contacted Kumano Travel to reflect the situation on spot at 4ish on 18/3. Kumano Travel replied us before 6pm they were had been informed by Hagi that things had been resolved. Indeed, no one had came until the young man showed up after 6ish.

Disappointed in rudeness
We were booked in the Annex 1111 but when we arrived we were told by an apologetic lady there was no room. When we showed her our booking voucher she was going to move someone else who had also booked and was settled in. We said we could stay at Haggi Inn. The bedroom, shower and toilets there were all good but the communal room and room outside the bathroom was so cluttered. I see the photos on your site don't show the state of these rooms. You need to make an inspection of this facility. Like other shave said it would be dangerous in fire and one of the first things we did was plan a possible escape through the window onto the roof.
Unlike any other hosts we have had in Japan, Mr Hagi was very rude. When we arrived he told us dinner 5pm, breakfast 6 - 6.30am and leave 8am. There was nothing suggesting these hours when we booked. Like others have said the food was nice but took 1 1/2 hours to cook because Mr Hagi would not provide enough charcoal until we kept asking. In the morning he said leave 7.30am and shouted at me when I couldn't see where the kettle was amid the clutter.
As others have experienced this rude treatment we wonder why you are referring people to him. He is not a pleasant host.

Nice experience but not worth the price
The guesthouse was a bit disappointing, the house is not very well build or maintained. However it is compensated by the warm welcome of the hosts, her great cooking. Globally a nice experience if you expect a lodging closer to a mountain shelter than a spotless house. Slightly too expensive to my opinion

Very comfortable stay!
This guesthouse is conveniently located directly on the trail, and reaching it was a nice relief after a long day of walking. Miyuki-san was extremely welcoming and a great chef, she showed us how to make Okonomiyaki and was very warm and friendly. The rooms were comfortable. Thank you for having us!

Ok place to stay. Food was adequate. Able to use laundry. Could be a very noisy place if other guests were noisy (they were not). Helpful that one toilet was right outside our room. no screens and a few mosquitos in rooms. Could be worse in warmer months.

Good
The location is good, right on the Kumano Kodo trail. The host was very friendly and helpful, and both dinner and breakfast were delicious, although the lunchbox was rather simple.
Unfortunately, the accommodation itself was quite dusty and covered in cobwebs. It was also very cold, and we didn’t know if there was any heating, as we were completely alone in the house after around 7 p.m. with no contact information available.
For the price, we received much better value at other accommodations along the Kumano Kodo.

A warm welcome and accommodation that met our needs, if rather basic. Worth noting that it's some way beyond Chikatsuyu so it's important to pace yourself after a long day.

This guesthouse is located conveniently along the Kumano Kodo path and breaks up your first and second day walks quite well, given there are not many other options in between. The guestrooms are split across 2 different properties, which are less than ~5 minutes' walk from each other. The dinner offered was wonderful and a nice option to have, as there are not many other food options around the area. The rooms are simple and good enough for an evening to simply rest. As the property is in the middle of the forest road, there are quite a few insects in and around the property/building. I stayed in a guestroom located in the 'annex' building, and although it was not dirty, the cleanliness of this space had a little room for improvement. Overall, it was acceptable and suitable for an evening to rest, as mentioned previously. The staff, Hagi-san, was also a very friendly and accommodating host.

Overpriced and unwelcoming
Not recommended. When I arrived, host left to "drive the guests to an onsen" so I sat in the "lobby" (open room with lots of stuff laying arouny) for 1.5h unable to relax in my room. When he came back at 4:35pm, he was kind of angry to lead me to the Annex building and prepare my bed because at 5:30pm it's dinner time. My room wasn't prepared, the owner's friend living in a room in the Annex and the kitchen was full off empty cans. Bathroom new and super spacious.
BBQ was fun and high-quality ingredients such as beef, oyster or scallop, but there was no rice, noodles or bread etc, no carbs at all, so I was still hungry after the meal. Breakfast conisted mostly of salad and a dry croissant. Overall, for more than 100€ not acceptable! Owner not very welcoming to foreigners, made me feel very incomfortable. If all accomodation in that area ia full, better stay in Hongu and next day take a bus back if you are doing the hike.

Great stay! Would recommend
This place was great! There were some lower reviews so I was a little unsure going, but the managers there were really friendly and it was right on the trail.
Dinner was awesome - a hibachi bbq with tons of stuff, they definitely provided us with rice (some reviews said they didn't).
Shower was fine, no bath though. This place was perfect for the night!

Lovely big Japanese room right on the trail. Large shower area (shared). Friendly hosts. Other guests were very respectful and great to chat to. It's expensive, but most ryokan/minshuku along the trail are. Dinner was a delicious hibachi grill, just needed some rice to be perfect. Towels and slippers provided, but no yukata.
