This was the favourite of the 3 places we booked for the Kumano Kodo. It was exceptional in every way. From our arrival and introduction to the apartment through our spectacular meals to the final farewell all was warm and welcoming. I couldn’t recommend this place highly enough. We loved our stay at Kameya.

The Best Lodging Experience during the Entire Japan Trip
March 31 was our first day on Kumano Kodo hike. When we arrived in Kii-Tanabe, the weather turned really bad. By the time we started our hike, the rain was pouring, the wind gust was up to 50 miles an hour. Worse yet, I fell at Kii-Tanabe station due to the slippery tile. A fellow hiker said that was a bad start of a long hiking trip.
All these made the easy 2.7 mile hike much tougher. By the time we got to Kameya, we were all wet and very tired. Kameya is right next to the Kumano Kodo hiking route. The hosts Miyako-san and Toshi-san were right there to greet us. The little reception area overlooks the valley with beautiful flower tree right in front. Upon arrival, Miyako-san prepared delicious coffee, tea and dessert to put my husband and I at ease. Toshi-san took our wet boots and used boot dryer to dry them. This is so heartwarming.
The guest house is fairly spacious for two people with all amenity you can imagine. It included much needed washer to wash our clothes, free of charge. The beds are western style, but the deco is Japanese. It even included a small balcony that also overlook the valley. The scene in the morning were absolutely stunning.
After rest, we had dinner prepared by Miyako-san and a helper. All boy, this is such a wonderful dinner. The Tempura was crisp and not greasy. The Sukiyaki beef dipped in home-produced egg was out of this world. The rice is home grown and so tasty. One can just eat the rice without dishes. We both had plenty of it. After dinner, we had a little game of "catching the ball". We then retired to the guest house after selecting our snack. The breakfast next morning is also wonderful and plentiful to prepare us for the upcoming long hike.
The most moving part was that on top of the wonderful food and stay. Toshi-san even gave each of us a little "charm" blessed at the local Shrine. We wear it outside our backpacks to prevent bear attacks.
All and all, it is the most wonderful stay I had in Japan with personal touch and lots of attention from the host. Thank you so much Miyako-san and Toshi-san. We would return if we ever visit the Kumano Kodo area again.

We LOVED everything about Kameya
Minshuku Takahara Kameya was absolutely beautiful in every way. An incredible place for our first night on the hike. An entire house to ourselves (we were a group of 3 friends). We LOVED the accommodation with its beautiful tatami living room with views over Takahara valley. Super cosy beds. Clean, comfortable and warm. AND the food was incredible and so beautifully prepared. We were nourished with home grown rice, veggies, mushrooms & eggs from their chooks, prepared with so much love.
The hosts were utterly delightful. Kind, warm and joyful and we will treasure this night for a long time! Takahara is a beautiful and peaceful village and it's worth staying here for 1 night on the Kumano Kodo!

A Wonderful Experience!

Beautiful Takahara
Would highly recommend staying at Minshuku Takahara Kameya. The owners are absolutely lovely, extremely helpful & superb cooks (along with their daughter). The accommodation was missing nothing, anything you wanted was there, bath/shower, washing machine, air conditioning, comfortable beds (not futons), living area, etc. They showed us their little farm (& chickens) from where they get their fresh ingredients to cook. Very traditional dinner & breakfast with a bento box for lunch. Even had a sample of their home made plum wine (umeshu)! Couldn't ask for anything more. Therese & Pete

Wonderful hospitality and stay.
We had a fabulous stay. My daughter and I arrived at the house feeling completely exhausted, and were immediately greeted with such warmth and kindness — a cup of tea, delicious food, and genuine hospitality that made us feel at home straight away.
The accommodation itself was beautiful, and the bed was honestly one of the most comfortable we’ve ever slept in. Everything about the experience felt thoughtful and welcoming. It was truly one of the best stays we’ve had, and we’re very grateful for the care shown to us.

Cozy apartment with amazing meals
Really enjoyed the warm service that was provided. The dinner was incredible and we thoroughly enjoyed the breakfast and packed lunch (onigiri) as well. The rice that we had here (grown by the owners) was one of the best we have tasted in Japan! The accomodation was perfectly warm and the bath was amazing.

We had such a lovely time here - it felt almost undeserved after only 4 km. Everything from the reception to the accommodation to the cleanliness to the food was excellent, and the host was kind and attentive. She went above and beyond, and a translator made communication easy. If any stay warrants five stars, this is it: You feel spoiled when you leave.

Absolutely Amazing. Perfection.
Wow, dream experience! Our host was so incredibly kind and caring. 10/10. Everything about our stay was perfect. The accommodations were so clean, such comfortable beds, warm apartment, perfectly equip with everything you need. The food was honestly in the top 3 meals we had in all of japan and that includes many Michelin restaurants... she is an incredible cook. Best rice of my life from her family's farm. Truly can't express how grateful we were to start our trip in such amazing care. I would love to come back!!

If I could I'd give more stars
They were really friendly, kind and attentive people. We arrived earlier than our check-in time and they even gave us coffee, the house was big and comfortable. I'd recommend this hotel because of the people who manage it, also the food was amazing. If I do this treck again, 100% I'm staying in this hotel again.

Wish there is an option to give 6 stars!
This was our stay for the first night on Kumano Kodo. It set the bar so high that we couldn't help compare all the following nights with it on our way and no one was better than Kameya!
Both Miyako and Kazumi were so friendly to us that we felt Kameya was like our own home in Japan. The room was perfectly clean. The location was nice that I could see the montains at the front door. The food was freshly prepared by Miyako and Kazumi and it was absolutely delicious. We had some nice conversation and they taught us how to play Kendama after dinner, it was such a fun night!
In the morning, we were having breakfast while watching the mountains in fog literally in front of us. Both Miyako and Kazumi (and their little cute dog) waved us goodbye when we left, and we could see them still waving a long way from their house. It really felt like saying goodbye to friends!
I wish I could write better to show my appreciation, the words above doesn't justifiy how I feel. Thank you so much Miyako san and Kazumi san to give us a beautiful start on our hiking! Wish you happy and healthy and hope I can return one day in the future!

A highlight of our time in Kumano Kodo - it was a perfect stay!
This was our best ever homestay experience. The owners, a sweet and friendly couple, were there to greet us the moment we arrived. The unblocked mountain view from the dining room was spectacular, and having a delicious home cooked breakfast of salmon, rice, soup and garden veggies there was such a treat. The apartment was super spacious for two of us and every room was perfectly clean and tidy. We had hot and relaxing showers and slept like babies under the warm weighted blankets. Aunty’s cooking is incredible and we felt so lucky to be served a huge, hearty dinner by her! She also played a traditional Japanese game with us and had really nice conversation with us despite having to use a translation device. She is so adorable and we really appreciate her warmth and hospitality throughout our stay. I’ve never written such a long review before but this minshuku really deserves one.

Tbh, this place might be a bit expensive but it’s so worth it. The room is huge with a living area, and everything is so clean. The food is amazing and miyako and kazumi are just the nicest and most welcoming people.

Highlight of our trip
We had the most incredible time during our one night stay at Minshuku Takahara Kameya. My husband and I stayed at the guesthouse with our 16 month old daughter. The hosts are incredibly kind and welcoming. The food was incredible. The home was comfortable and clean. The views over the rice fields were gorgeous. We were very sad to leave in the morning. It was an amazing experience for our family. We felt so at home.

Thank you so much for an amazing stay. Our stay in Takahara was the highlight of our time in Japan. Everything exceeded our expectations, from the delicious welcome juice, to the clean and beautiful accommodation, to the scrumptious dinner. I am amazed by Japanese hospitality!!

Don’t hesitate to stay here - it will make your first night the bestest and most memorable yet.
The family was so warm and friendly - we felt so taken care of as though we were their very own daughters. The house was extremely clean, comfortable and spacious with all the amenities you’ll need. Even a nice tatami room for you to just zen in! I love how the toilet converts into a drying room too!
The bestest part (besides the hosts of course) was the food - you’ll definitely not regret being fed like you will after your first day of hiking! The attention to detail and care they’ve put into their dishes were delightful! I was blown away cos we’re delicious! And then we discovered.. they have their own farm.. and rear chickens gasp. I ate one of those potential chicks - you were too delicious to be borned into the world.
Thank you so much to the wonderful hosts for the bestest hospitality I’ve ever received in Japan. They make me want to return :)

1.位置的には休憩所に近く、主要幹線道路沿いにあるので見つけやすいです。
2.環境から言えば:家屋は新しくて装飾して、施設などはすべてとても新しくて、とてもきれいで、清潔で、便利です(これから入居する友達がたくさん愛して、大切にすることができることを望みます)、私と友達は入居する時感嘆します——うわあ、部屋の中でこの詳細なhostさえ思いました!
3.スタッフから言うと——皆さんは家族のようで、とても親切で、愛嬌があります。関西の皆さんは本当に明るい性格です。一泊しただけですが、皆さんがこの民宿に心血を注いでいることがとても感じられます。
4。食事から:私たちは非常に驚きは、ご飯は、自分の家の経営者は、食べるのは本当に同じではない、非常においしいです。夕食は外国から来た私達に日本の様々な古典的な料理を体験させて、ボスは本当に心があります。朝食のTKGは本当に美味しかったです(あははご主人のご推薦ありがとうございます!)

Strongly recommend
Very nice and kind owners, took care of us and served delicious meals. The outside scene just sitting at the kitchen is excellent. Though Kameya was just started, I would give a strong recommendation for people to stay with in Takahara.
By the way, raw egg served with salt, soy sauce and rice is delicious.
