Description
Seafood Minshuku
Minshuku Wakatake is a friendly, family-run hot spring guesthouse just across the footbridge behind Kii-Katsuura station. Katsuura is a fishing port village famous for its tuna. Minshuku Wakatake takes full advantage of this location next to the sea by serving fresh and delicious seafood all year round. They are especially proud of their grilled tuna cheek or collar, a local delicacy, and are highly rated on various review sites. Menus and sake information are available in English. The owner believes in saving the best of the old, incorporating new ideas, and connecting with future generations to come.

Get the tasting menu!
Right across the street from Kii-Katsuura Station across the pedestrian bridge (ignore the directions given by Google maps!), you can catch the afternoon bus from Nachisan and be in time for dinner. In the morning, it is a very short walk to the Tuna auction and Tourist Pier. The minshuku is beautifully decorated by murals from local artist and students. Dinner and Breakfast was phenomenal - lots of things to try complete with a beautifully illustrated explanation to all the local specialities. The onsen was much welcomed after my last day hiking the Kumano Kodo. There is free laundry washing (dryer is 200 yen) and free hot drinks (coffee, tea, latte mix). Excellent service - everyone was kind and welcoming.

The sashimi was so good!
Minshuku Wakatake was easy to find since it's ridiculously close to the JR station. Rooms are nice and acceptable in size. There are no private baths/toilet, so be prepared to do it dorm-style and to have shared baths if you stay here. There was also no elevator, so this isn't the place to go to if you have heavy luggage like our group. Other than that, we had a great experience because the dinner was so good. We've never had so much high quality sashimi before, and they also gave us some extra dishes. Apart from fish, we also had hotpot beef. It was very enjoyable to eat them with beer. We also had a good breakfast before our second hike. Luggage storage is no problem, and staff was very accommodating when we considered taking a taxi to our destination. Overall an enjoyable experience despite the difficulties of our group!

Located close to the station. Room was a bit small for two people with luggage, reminded me more of a Tokyo accommodation, but it was only one night so it was no big deal. Clean bathrooms and toilets. We could also store our luggage there after checkout before our train in the afternoon.

Amazing Dinner and Great Stay
We had an amazing stay at Minshuku Wakatake. The dinner was truly special — one of the highlights of our trip — with beautifully presented local sashimi and delicious dishes. The amenities were great, and the hosts were very welcoming. A perfect end to our Kumano Kodo journey!

Great location, small onsen, strange shower set up
We stayed at this minshuku for 1 night, opting for board only as there are many restaurants in the town of Kii Katsuura for dining/lunch. Our room was large and clean, with a WC next door. AC was good. However, the WC did not have a sink nearby, so we opted to use the women's WC on the 3rd floor instead. The on site Women's onsen is actually just a large bath tub - 2 adults would comfortably fit. It was ok (lukewarm). The shower room set up is very strange: there is space for 2 people to shower at the same time, and for privacy, you'd need to lock the main door, but this means others cannot use the shower while you use the shower/onsen. The showers are new, clean, and well equipped with shampoo etc, but the odd privacy arrangements meant only 1 of us chose to use the onsen. The rest just showered quickly and left. Staff were very welcoming and helpful - when we reported seeing cockroaches in the WC, they immediately attended to it. We stayed off season in early October (there were not that many guests around) so the weird shower set up was not an issue. But if it was busier, this might become an issue.

Tried their sake testinga d thoroughly enjoyed it! I’m sorry to not be able to speak or understand Japanese as I think it will make the experience even more enjoyable cos I’ll be able to learn even more from the sake master. Food was the bomb and room was spacious and clean. They made sure the showers and toilets were kept clean too which I do appreciate since it’s shared. I’m just the bitch who prefers en suite but I booked too late so couldn’t get any :)

Amazing cooking and cool owners
The minshuku is convenient for the station (you just go over a footbridge, but it's very close) and the young owners were absolutely charming and v v helpful. But the highlight of the stay was an astonishingly wonderful dinner, based around local tuna and other ingredients. It was creative cooking of the highest quality and we will remember that meal for years - I would love to go back to Minshuku Wakatake

Wonderful place
This place is wonderful! The location is excellent, the facilities are very appropriate, and the staff very friendly and attentive. I stayed for one night and I was treated to a several course meal of tuna! Never in my life have I had so much tuna! It was fresh and cooked and uncooked in several ways. The room was the smallest room I’ve been in Japan, but it did the job!

A very nice place to stay
Great local very close to the train station. A modernized version of a traditional accommodation with a very nice Onsen. We were there in February and while it was quite cold outside, the room was warm and cozy. The breakfast was very good. We did not have dinner there, but we once ate in the restaurant associated to the Minshuku, which is highly recommendable.

It's basic - real basic - but at least it's conveniently located
For some reason I was given a plastic fake "tatami" room, which felt more like a capsule hotel than a guest house. It is 2 minutes from the station, which is great, and there are plenty of good restaurants in town, but this place is nothing special. And the bath literally has room for only TWO people, and when there are no extra showers, that's definitely not enough.

Very nice hosts, let me check in early , as I had hiked the last section very fast and was certainly appreciative of being able to relax after that! The room was nice and dark, quiet and a very comfortable bed and pillow. The restaurant next door is EXEPTIONAL and I had an amazing meal. My only regret is that I could not stay in Kii Katsuura longer to eat there again!

Excellent Accommodations - clean, cozy, and delicious food!
My partner and I loved staying at this minshuku. The room was very clean and comfortable. I like that there was a sliding door to separate the main living/sleeping area from the private sink area. The private sink area also had a nice windowed balcony. I was really glad wi-fi was available in the private rooms. The bathrooms are shared but I honestly did not mind because they were very clean and it was not crowded. The shower and bath was very clean and refreshing after a day of hiking. The location is also very convenient, just a few minutes away from the Kii-Katsuura station and easy to find. Service was great. It was easy for us to just ring the bell when we arrived. The food was the major highlight. Our breakfast was delicious -- a whole range of ways to eat tuna. It was all delicious, but we also felt bad because it was so much food that we weren't able to finish it all. Breakfast was also a huge spread and very tasty. Highly recommend!

Location is tops!! Just across the train station. Not all of us has the same room sizes. Somehow, one room was very small whereas the other 2 seemed more reasonably sized. Toilets are all common areas. The onsen was tiny and can only fit 2 people showering at one time. The meals though has been outstanding especially our dinner, with the tuna tasting menu.

We tried the sushi boat course and it was amazing. So many varieties of tuna sashimi--- then we also had tuna mis soup, tuna stomach, tuna eggs, and an enormous tuna collar. Delicious. Lovely little town
The minshuku is very handy to the railway station, we left our bags there as we arrived early. We hired bikes for an hour and ate at the restaurant on the pier. The town is known for its tuna fishing. Our room was large, the toilets and bath are down the corridor and there is free coffee /tea facilities plus a free washing machine. The evening meal was an amazing experience, sitting on the floor and we opted for the sake tasting, it felt very authentic. It is a clean, simple place.

Five Star Amazing Stay!
We arrived on a super wet and cold day and to arrive at this stay was heavenly! Warm, clean and modern coupled with fabulous hosts - it was a great way to end the trip! In our four weeks in Japan the meal that we had here was the best we have ever tried. Whale meat is on offer in many restaurants in this shipping and fishing town, so please check this if you do not wish to eat it! We opted out and the seafood here was totally amazing, never had anything like it before. The Minshuku is situated in the centre of town and directly across from train station which was handy for our departure the next morning.

Conveniently Located with Great Sake, Seafood, and Art.
The delicious maguro (tuna) dinner with expert sake paring from the proprietor was a highlight. Convenient location right next to the train station. Loved all the art around the facility. Bath area is a little small but had a nice relaxing soak.

Final night on the trail, arrived on a very hot afternoon after a long day’s walking. Room was small but clean, however the air conditioning struggled with the heat and didn’t cool the room properly. Can’t comment on meals, only had breakfast, perfectly adequate but nothing special. Bath was good, a good size, clean towels, much appreciated at the end of trail. Would suit someone just needing a place to sleep at the end of the Ogumotori-goe trail.

Great food
The rooms are a little small but the location is realy convenient and the food was amazing. The drink selection was also top notch. The onsen was very nice, though the set up was a bit odd. Didn't make too mich of a difference for me since I used the onsen at an off hour. The front desk staff were friendly and accomodating.

Not many options in this area but the location of Minshuku Wakatake is great. Literally across the street from the train station and city center. Great location near Kii-Katsuura station
At first I was annoyed not to be able to find accommodation close to Nachi-san waterfall for the end of my final day hiking, but in the end I was actually happier to end at Minshuku Wakatake. It was really nice to be able to come straight out and on to the train in the morning. Rooms were super comfortable and food was good, check in was very easy as well. My only comment - it would be good to improve the wifi so that you can get signal in all of the guest rooms!

Excellent location and very large rooms
The location of the guesthouse is perfect, it is right next to the train station, so if travelling the Kumano Kodo (as we did) it is very easy to find. The staff were very helpful during check-in and showed us the facilities. The room was huge by Japanese standards! With plenty of (Japanese) dvds to watch in your rooms and a large TV, you'll never be bored! The onsen was suprisingly brown from the natural spring water, but dont let that put you off, as my experience was lovely! The village is a sleepy port-side one, but I would recommend sampling the local tuna and visiting the daily fish market. There are also natural hot spring footbaths just outside the market, which is perfect to rest your feet in and watch the bustle of the harbour. A lovely guesthouse, I would highly recommend.

We Enjoyed our Stay, the Hosts are Lovely
The hosts were very nice and accommodating when we arrived to find there was a mistake on our booking (it had been booked for the following day in error) our hosts called the tourism office for us and helped resolve the issue. Luckily there was still a room for us which we found good value and very comfortable. We didn't try the evening meal but the breakfast was the regular style, location was great, right next to the train station, the bath was good but a little small for the number of rooms they have, we waited a little while until a few people remained and then used so we didn't have any problem here. Maybe we are spoilt with the other baths we experienced along the Kodo.

Nice guesthouse right next to Kiikatsuura station
Nice hosts running guesthouse. Room was on 3rd floor and we were able to have our luggage taken up to our room for us. This place specialises in seafood, we had tuna cooked in lots of ways I.e. In broth, grilled as sahismi. Excellent dinner and breakfasts. Bathroom/onsen is fairly small but they had separate areas for cleaning face and teeth. Room was big enough for 3 adults, toilet just outside our room shared with another room next to us. Location good for quick access to train.

This Minshuku was a breath of fresh air after finishing the 6 day trek. We had a bit of trouble finding it because there is no English name out the front. Very convenient location across the street from the JR station and just a short walk to the tuna market, which is very much worth the 7:00 AM visit. Overall, I liked the experience (room, food and service) in Wakatake. However, only one thing set me off: the inexistence of a private shower. It was a good thing to have a public bath but it would also be good to have at least one private shower for people who could not use the public bath.

Convenient location
This ryokan was very convenient to the train station. It was good for the price we paid but more of a backpacker style than the other ryokans our group stayed at along the Kumano Kodo trail. We could smell cigarette smoke in our room, and the bath (and building generally) was a little tired. Breakfast was Japanese style. The manager was vey helpful and friendly and we were glad to be able to use the washing machine and dryer at the end of our trip. The owners had kindly forwarned us that a school sporting group would be staying the same night we were there and that was not a problem at all for us as they were very well behaved and quiet.

Great food an convenient location next to the station
The best thing of Wakatake is definetely the dinner, we had really good food, better than some way more expensive ryokan we had stay previously! Rooms are simple but funcional. Shared toilets and baths are clean. On the negative side I'd say that the place looks a bit shabby and not at all cozy but on the other hand is clean and functional, i would reccomend it for an overnight stay on the kumano-kodo.

Convenient location and great meal
A little less intimate than the other accommodations on the Kumano Kodo, but the seafood meal gave us unique dishes we'd never tried before, and the location was convenient to the train station (you're practically on top of it!). Finishing our hike at Nachi Taisha was excellent, so we were happy to hike west-to-east and finish here.

BAD
The worst accommodation. Smell very bad, found lots of insects, got diarrhea from the meals, ugly. People are very nice. Please find a nicer hotel for your guesses.

The new owners seem very keen to please but improvements are required
We stayed one night at Minshuku Wakatake in Kii-Katsuura. We were initially thrilled with our room, as it was huge! However it ended up being our worst stay in Japan. The main problem was the stench of cigarette smoke that permeated the bedding and room. All night, cigarette smoke wafted into our room from other parts of the building (we think especially from a dining room next door). We probably lost a couple of years off our lives to all of second hand smoke we inhaled - and all of our belongings absolutely reeked thereafter. It was not fun washing all of our clothes in a sink the next night. Other than the smoke, the room was fine. The bathrooms were dirty and disgusting - perhaps this is because we were on the same floor as the dining rooms and meeting rooms. The young couple who own the place was quite charming. They are trying to learn English and carried notebooks with English phrases. If they worked on the cleanliness of the place and fixed the cigarette stench and ventilation, we might have had an entirely different experience.

Excelent meals, smelly room
We got a room with a window just besides the ventilation from the kitchen and possibly other areas. This made the room rather noisy. Additionally, the room had a very strong tobacco smell. However, it seemed that there are better rooms but they were already occupied. Staff was very friendly, although they only speak English well enough for basic conversation. They even kept our luggage after checkout. Meals (dinner and breakfast) were fantastic and of very high quality. As one could easily pay the price for 1 night including the meals for just the meals in a restaurant, Minshuku Wakatake is good value.

warmly recommended!
thanks to the owner of this hotel, i've had a wonderful stay! the room is simple and super clean, the hotel is very conviniently located one step aside of the train station, and the food was most delicious: super fresh fish! But what was even better was the hospitality of the owner. i speak no japanese - alas, but he really made fruitful efforts to communicate with me in the more gentle and helpful way, from indicating me good spots to visit, giving me the schedule of the trains, arranging the breakfast time to make sure i indeed catch the train. i thought my trip was settled, but he made it much better, and with a smile too!

Serviceable Minshuku very close to the train station
The friendly owner was very patient with communication, and used a combination of a little English and an electronic translation tool on his mobile phone. The sleeping room had tatami mats & futons, but also a seating area with chairs and a table, as well as a sink (and TV). Unfortunately, only a smoking room was available for us, and it was pretty smelly - be sure to ask for a non-smoking room when you reserve (we were able to leave the windows open, which helped a lot). Otherwise, the room was clean and comfortable. The owner gave us a 50% discount coupon for the onsen at Hotel Urashima, and we bathed there so didn't use the bath in the Minshuku. Very good, traditional style meals. Super convenient to the train station.

Vey nice family run Minshuku!
We had a very nice 3 night stay at Minshuku Wakata. The village of Ki-Katsuura is small and calm, but the people are very nice, especcially the owner of Minshuku Wakatake who really tried to explain us everything, sometimes with the help of other guests if he felt he could not find the right words. As a result we had a great stay and no trouble at all finding buses, babyfood, whatsoever. The food was wonderful, thank you very much.
