Amazing experience as the rooms were fantastic and the food was exceptional! They also allowed us to keep our bags there during the day which was greatly appreciated!

Convenient and the food is an insight into local industry

This was a great last stop of our hike. It was close to the bus stop, when we were keen to take no additional steps! Then it was close to the train station the next morning for our onward journey. Accommodation was clean and convenient. The highlight was the meals. We enjoyed the walk through Tuna cooking. My kids (to my surprise) really got into it. It was fantastic to be involved in such a meal and get such an insight into the way local food shapes local cuisine.

Great location, great meal

We enjoyed Minshuku Wakatake. The location is right next to the train station and we had local sashimi course which was great and quite a feast, tuna done 5 ways. The hotel onsen was nice though the water was too hot for us. Otherwise, the room was spacious, Japanese style. We had a nice stay.

Get the tasting menu!

Right across the street from Kii-Katsuura Station across the pedestrian bridge (ignore the directions given by Google maps!), you can catch the afternoon bus from Nachisan and be in time for dinner. In the morning, it is a very short walk to the Tuna auction and Tourist Pier. The minshuku is beautifully decorated by murals from local artist and students. Dinner and Breakfast was phenomenal - lots of things to try complete with a beautifully illustrated explanation to all the local specialities. The onsen was much welcomed after my last day hiking the Kumano Kodo. There is free laundry washing (dryer is 200 yen) and free hot drinks (coffee, tea, latte mix). Excellent service - everyone was kind and welcoming.

The sashimi was so good!

Minshuku Wakatake was easy to find since it's ridiculously close to the JR station. Rooms are nice and acceptable in size. There are no private baths/toilet, so be prepared to do it dorm-style and to have shared baths if you stay here. There was also no elevator, so this isn't the place to go to if you have heavy luggage like our group. Other than that, we had a great experience because the dinner was so good. We've never had so much high quality sashimi before, and they also gave us some extra dishes. Apart from fish, we also had hotpot beef. It was very enjoyable to eat them with beer. We also had a good breakfast before our second hike. Luggage storage is no problem, and staff was very accommodating when we considered taking a taxi to our destination. Overall an enjoyable experience despite the difficulties of our group!
