Description
Friendly Business Ryokan
Miyoshiya is a budget Japanese-style Ryokan inn near the Kii-Tanabe Station. A convenience store, grocery store, and Ajikoji, a collection of restaurants and bars, are close by. Miyoshiya Ryokan is a relaxed, reasonable accommodation run by Ken, a third-generation owner who spent many years studying in Canada. In the courtyard of these older buildings is a small shrine. It has a retro feel to the facilities and has a mixed clientele of businessmen, long-term guests, students, groups, and both domestic and international tourists.

Good location nearby to Kii Tanabe train and bus station
Walking distance to Kii Tanabe train & bus station. Strategic location especially for early start on bus to Kumano Kodo tail head. Rooms basic, sufficient for 1 night stay. Nearby to Family Mart for groceries.

A lovely stopover.
The accommodation is conveniently located just a few minutes walk from Kii Tanabe train station/bus stop - making it an ideal place to stopover before catching the bus to the Kumano Kodo trail the next day. Our host was friendly, spoke very good English, and even allowed us to store some extra baggage in the Ryokan for the duration of our Kumano Kodo hike free of charge! We are very grateful for this kindness. Our room was spacious and comfortable, and breakfast was tasty, plentiful and nutritious.

Miyoshiya Ryokan
Very friendly welcome from the staff, who also provided excellent restaurant suggestions. An acceptable stay given the low price, however the property is “showing its age” and could use a good cleaning. The location was very convenient - very close to the bus and train as well as the Ajikoji entertainment area.

Frinedly, handy and charming.
Our stay at the Miyoshiya was only one night, but it was a good experience. Our host was very friendly and helpful, the room was quite charming, comfortable and the location was perfect for an early start to the Kumano trail, just a few minutes walk to the bus station. The host provided a large, tasty breakfast and our luggage was transferred to our next stop with no problems.

Great
I would recommend it; it was very close to the station, it was clean and had all the essentials. The owner checked me out in person a little earlier before the official time, which was nice. I didn't order any meals, so cannot speak to it. Overall, perfect stay before starting the trail.

I think you should consider removing this place from your listings. The guy was friendly but the futons were smelly and stained, as were the chairs in the room. I understand it is an old house but it’s just got shabby and there is no effort put into guest comfort. Breakfast was barely edible, tea awful.

Accommodations
VERY run down place. We had to lug our luggage up 4 flights of stairs and the railing near the top was unusable. We were on the top floor and I was concerned enough about how to escape if a fire. The bathroom wasn’t very clean. Walking to the dining room the floor boards were loose and moving as we walked. The family were nice but I would not recommend staying here for I’m sure the building integrity is not the best.

Easy and convenient Ryokan...
I stayed here for my first night in Kii-Tanabe, before setting out to the Nakahechi trail the next day. The host was very welcoming, and speaks excellent English... Location wise, Miyoshiya Ryokan is a short walk from the JR Station. It is located near to a busy road intersection, so there is a little bit of traffic noise.. There is a convenient store nearby (which was actually very convenient!). The general amenities of the Ryokan are good for the price, with provisions made for both Western and Japanese needs. I didn’t ask, but I think having a normal pillow available would be a good idea; I battled to get sound sleep with the Japanese one.. The breakfast meal was tasty and gave me a good fill for the morning’s hiking. Overall, good value for the location and the price. Thank you for having me...

Pros The staff was very friendly and It was kind to us that the owner served the breakfast early in the morning. Excellent location close to JR station. The size of room because it is huge with a large windows and views to the main street. The private onsen is cosy. There are a lot of information about activities and useful ticks about different topics such as transport, restaurants. Things to improve I understand that problably it is an historic house (Ryokan) but from my point of view the guesthouse need some works to improve the apparience. On the other side, the cleaning could be better after comparing with other accommodation throughout the Japan.

A very pleasant short stay at this beautiful Ryokan
We had a really good time at our Ryokan. The room was very clean and big, so we had more than enough space for our luggage, etc.. The bath was very nice, the hosts were very nice and extremely helpful as well. We could leave our luggage there for a few days to explore the Kumao Kodo area after having checked-out. I can highly recommend staying there.

Lovely Ryoken
The owner is a terrific fellow, really friendly and full of useful information. We found the Ryoken to be very quiet and relaxing. The mattresses were a bit thin but it was a really good experience. We were able to leave our luggage here whilst we were away walking part of the Kumano Kudo. This was a huge bonus.

Stayed here for two nights while doing a day hike on the kumano kodo. The house is only a few meters from the train/bus station and an area with lots of restaurants, a family mart is just around the corner. The house is a little old and some parts would need a renovation, but the room was spacious and clean. Really liked the service: the owner is super friendly and speaks english. Breakfast was fantastic, lots of different vegetarian food and we could freely chose the time. All in all, I can definitely recommend the Ryokan and would stay there again.

Adequate guesthouse near Tanabe train station. Got a great recommendation for dinner from the owner. Bring your own coffee and creamer or go to the nearby Family Mart if you can’t do without your caffeine hit in the morning. You might want to consider another place if you require a western toilet and need to make make nighttime visits; it’s on the first floor, rooms on the 2nd.

Miyoshiya was a great place to stay the night before starting our journey on the Kumano Kodo. The food was good and room was comfortable, although both were no-frills. A nice little spot to spend a night. Definitely a casual and communal Ryokan, with a shared fridge and shared tea station. We appreciated having our own bathrooms. Traditional and very well located
Ken and his family were wonderful hosts! The ryokan is old-style: tatami and japanese-style toilets, and that is part of its charm and the japanese experience. We stayed 4 nights with our 2 kids (2yo & 9mo) and were really comfy in the room with ensuite toilet & bath. We slept very well on the futon! The owners were always available and super helpful. This ryokan is very well located, 2min from the station, and surrounded by many restaurants/combini. We highly recommend it!

Friendly, welcoming, feels like home
This ryokan provided the perfect start to our Kumano Kodo journey! Ken was so helpful and welcoming, and clearly content and proud to run the ryokan started by his grandfather. After studying abroad, he returned to his birthplace, Tanabe, where the sun shines on the countryside hills and mikan groves. We fell in love with this town and its friendly occupants! After the crowded streets of Kyoto, this ryokan provided a nice retreat and transition for our hike on the Nakahechi Trail. With coffee and breakfast bento in hand, we set off the next morning fully revived. Thank you, Ken-san for the excellent hospitality and delicious bento! 3 Sisters from California.

The location was convenient for the trains and bus station, although the downside of that was that it was slightly noisy at night. The room came with a toilet attached, but it was a squat toilet. So this was better than no toilet, but for a non-Japanese person this was not as attractive to use. Overall it was convenient for its location and worth putting up with less luxury for the easy transit to/from the bus and train station. The host was helpful.

OK for one night
An ok place for one night before or after the Kumano Kodo. The Ryokan is dated and needs lots of work, but it's functional. No meals available, but it's a short walk to lots of restaurants. The owner was very friendly, genuine and helpful... above average service.

Excellent!
This place was everything we needed. After a long train ride from Tokyo, the lodging here was very comfortable and the owner was very accommodating. We didn't arrive until later in the evening and Ken stayed available for us to check in. He even carried our heavy suitcase up two flights of stairs for us! This place is not luxury by any means but it was simple and traditional and most importantly made you feel like home. Highly recommend!

Wonderful ryokan, great place to start the pilgrimage
Ryokan was at excellent location. We had very nice room, were able to see sunrise from there. Ken gave us great tips where to eat, get a bus etc. Breakfast was great and delicious as well. We arrived here straight from Osaka airport and after traveling with backbags in +28C, was perfect moment to soak in furo and rest. I could stay here longer, it was really nice and charming house.

Good location and food, but not clean
The location is really handy, because it is just a 10 minutes walk to the station. The meal was surprisingly very good. I was embarrassed about the over all poor condition of the Ryokan. Everything was old and not very clean, the bathroom even moldy. On the other side was the service good and the staff friendly and helpful.

Miyoshiya 2016/10/06
The location is perfect to catch the bus early in the morning. The welcome is great and easy as our host spoke good english. The quality of the room is disappointing as it is well maintained but old and a bit gloomy. Breakfast was very nice. Our host as the tourism office did, recommended that we have dinner at Kanteki. The welcome was ok as there was a menu in English. Unfortunately, the portions were minimal : A plate of sushi of 20 pieces for 3000Y to share between 4 is robbery !

A great place to stay before starting the trail!
We were on the first train into Wakayama after the 9/20/16 typhoon. The host easily accommodated our delayed travel schedule (several hours late due to the storm and slow post-storm trains due to debris on tracks). Our guestroom (for three) was sizeable and clean. The breakfast the next morning was huge and delicious. The location is very near the train station so we were able to get there in the dark just fine and make it back early the next morning for the bus to Takijiri. For a place to stage the night before starting the trail, I couldn't ask for anything more.

A truly excellent place
My stay at Miyoshiya ryokan was way beyond my expectations ! The ryokan is close to the train station (and the information center and huses departures). The room is very nice, spacious, with its own bath, a space to sit down and relax. The room is well equiped, many items. The japanese breakfast was good with many things, and served in a private room. The highlight was the welcome of the owner, very nice and outgoing, he speaks english very well and made good recommendations. I would definitely stay there if i come back to Kii-Tanabe!

Rooms and furnishings were a little run-down, but staff was very nice and helpful. The staff spoke great English. There is only one bathroom (shower/bath) for everyone in ryokan. Private toilet in room (it was Japanese style, not American, just FYI) and there was AC in room. Breakfast was so large and substantial, it was the best breakfast we had on our whole trip. I would definitely recommend this place.

Good location, though the Ryokan itself is rather rundown.
Location is good and close to the station and a Family Mart making it convenient. Breakfast was also nice. Rooms were old and somewhat rundown, though it has Air-Conditioning which made it alot more comfortable. Unfortunately the Ryokan doesn't have any Western Style Toilets (i.e. no Toilet Bowls) so you either have to make do with the Squatting Japanese ones or go to the Family Mart to use their toilets.

Room service was great, we got fresh towels and yukatas every day. The location is great there is a FamiMa in 2 minutes and Kii-tanabe station in about 5. You can wash your clothes in 2 washing machines for 100 Yen/hour and 2 dryers for the same amount. The only thing that was a little inconvenient is that we could only shower from 4 pm ~ 10 am. Decent place to stay before starting Kumano Kodo
Miyoshiya Ryokan provided what we needed, which was a decent place to stay in Tanabe before starting the Kumano Kodo trek. It is conveniently located, just a short walk from the train/bus station though we had a bit of a hard time locating it at first because we missed the small sign completely. The room was pretty average, but comfortable enough for one night. The entire building only has Japanese style toilets, which might be a concern for some but was not for us. Breakfast was large and tasty and set us up with a good amount of energy to begin hiking.

Miyoshiya Ryokan
Ken, the owner of the ryokan is a nice person. I booked a room for 4 person and when we arrived at the ryokan, Ken prepared 2 separate rooms for us as he deemed 1 room will be very small for 4 persons at no extra charges. Besides that, he allowed us to store our luggage for 2 days after we left for other parts of Wakayama. The room is clean and the toilet and the bathroom is separated from each other. Ken, the owner at Miyoshiya Ryokan was friendly and accommodating. I arrived late to Tanabe both at start the Kumano Kodo from the US and also the finish when returning from Nachi, and Ken was there waiting at the desk. His place is easy to find ( with the help from 3 sweet local ladies!) when I arrived weary eyed from 20+ hours of travel. It is very near to the train station. There is a convenience store 2 min up the road and many restaurants 5 min the opposite way. The rooms were simple, clean, Japanese style which I found extremely comfortable. There was a Japanese style toilet and shared bath on one of the nights, both fine by me (clean) and en suite toilet and bath another night. There is a shared area for tea. Also, Ken held my one large luggage for the duration on the trail free of charge. Would recommend to anyone looking for simple, clean, convenient accommodation in Tanabe City.

Miyoshiya provided us with a useful map of the town, suggestions for getting food for the next day's walk and were very helpful. We wanted to arrange to have our luggage sent to the very end of the walk and very much appreciated their assistance in organising that.

A very comfortable first night stay in Japan before tackling the 4-day Kumano Kodo walk to Nachi San. Room was spacious and comfortable. Good restaurant recommendations for lunch and dinner in the nearby pub/restaurant area. Very accommodating and cooked a sumptuous breakfast for me at 6am for my early start to the walk. Helpfully arranged for my luggage to be picked by and couriered to minshuku at Yunomine Onsen.

Great for starting the Kumano Kodo
Miyoshiya Ryokan was great for our plans of walking the Kumano Kodo. The room was big and spacious, very comfortable although a bit old like the whole place, but perfect for us. The ryokan was very close to the train station and to the restaurants area, and the owner was very nice and friendly, with great Enlgish and giving us lots of information for the Kumano and the city. They also kept our luggage for free for the two days we where walking the Kumano. The Japanese breakfast was very nice as well. An excellent place to stay, we definitely recommend it!

Conveniently located at a short walk from the train station. Facilities are showing signs of age but generally clean. The host was helpful. Ability to store luggage when I went off to walk the Kumano Kodo with just a light backpack was particularly good.

A convenient place to stay before starting on the Kumano Kodo.
I arrived in the evening at this ryokan but found it easily from the station. It is an older building and my room was up two flights of stairs but the manager carried my bags up and down for me. Whilst the room was a bit tired, it was comfortable with a Japanese style toilet and separate bath for my own use. The manager on reception spoke very good English and was very helpful. There was a convenience store a short walk away where I bought food for the next day as I was leaving early.

Clean, efficient, modest, shared-bath stay
Ken runs a clean and efficient place, with easy access to the Tanabe train, bus, laundry and restaurants. His recommendation for a dinner at local Izakaya was excellent!! Good value for price, and would recommend.

Close to the train/bus station. A convenience store located nearby. The staff was very friendly and informative. We had to carry with help from the staff our suitcases up several flights of stairs, and down the next morning, as there is no elevator in the building.

Ken is great!
Ken and his wife were incredibly helpful. He provided detailed informaiton about the Kumano hike, where to get food at Tanabe, and what to do if the storm did hit the area and we can't take the JR train back. He also helped us with exchanging some Yen so that we have local currency for the road until we get to the next destination where we can withdraw money from the ATM in the Post Office. The location of the Ryokan was great: very close to the train station and a mall with a super market. The breakfast was delicious and plentiful. We really enjoyed our stay and can't thank Ken enough for his help.

Great Place To Start My Hike
The staff were very helpful and welcoming when I arrived, showing me around the Ryokan and giving me maps of the area. They also made sure that I had ample maps for the pilgrimage, knew where my next lodging was, and knew where to get the bus the following morning, which would take me to the trailhead of the Kumano Kodo. Room was excellent and had its own toilet. Very comfortable and private.

First night and best introduction to the Wakayama peninsula. Ken gave me an excellent room, with a little seating area to the side of the main tatami-matted room and possibly the best room. What a great and welcoming place as the start to the Kumano Kodo. Ken gave me lots of maps and brochures to take on the journey. He also, when asked, recommended and gave directions to a little ramen restaurant, and printed a photo of the ramen restaurant so that I could identify it around the little lanes of the main eating and drinking area close to the hotel. Such kindness. Tamoko gave me invaluable advice on detour sections of the trail and both welcomed me warmly when I appeared a few days later to collect the rest of my luggage. Did not reserve breakfast so the average for the rating goes lower than what is a friendly and most comfortable stay. Highly recommended overnight stay to the start of walking the trail.

Friendly hosts
While Miyoshiya Ryokan is a budget inn with budget-type accommodations, the innkeepers are wonderfully helpful and friendly. They are also fluent in English, which is very helpful for a city where many of the guests are there for one night before beginning the Kumano Kodo hike the next day. They kept our luggage for us, allowing us to hike with day bags. Overall, I recommend staying here.

Convinient location but needs renovation
It is a hostel type of accomodation very conviniently located close to the Kii-Tanabe train station, bus stop, shops, restaurants. The owner and his wife were very kind and helpful in providing information about the area. They both speak good English. Our room was large (for Japanease standards) with en-suite toilet, futons and basic furniture. On the negative side, the place is in a poor state of maintnance and would need some renovations (old furniture and equipment, dirty walls, kitchen space, bathroom). Cleaniness of the room could also be improuved. It is also possible to smoke in the lobby and the smell goes around. A good cleaning, removing of some old, broken furniture and repainting would greatly improuve this place.

Basic but good, very helpful owners
Very good choice if you plan to set off to Kumano Kodo the next day, since it's a very short walk from the guesthouse to the train station and bus stop. Also, the owner and his wife are super friendly and happy to help you out with any information you might need for your trip. They will also store your luggage for a couple of days if you need to. The guesthouse itself is quite old and the rooms basic (but spacious!), but it's definitely worth the money.

Great value for money, as Miyoshiya was close to the station, the room had a good aircon, TV, lots of space and wifi at reception. The place is rather old and could do with a refurbishment (especially the toilets), but it certainly has character and the welcome is friendly, English is spoken and the staff are happy to help. Would happily stay here again.

This is a very friendly and cheerful Ryokan. While the location is not in a beautiful location, it is about as convenient as anyone could ask for.
