The accommodations were very nice, but the check-in process was one of our worst experiences. It was raining and the internet connection kept disconnecting during check-in.

Easy to find location on the trail.
Check-in process was confusing. No one available to help in person, only a booth with a poor internet connection on iPad.
Breakfast was only 4 pieces of bread.

Inconvenience of NON-HUMAN check-in system
Somehow I did not receive any email from the hotel regarding check-in procedure. Upon arrived do not know where to check-in and nobody around to ask and all doors are lock with digital keypad. Made international call through my print out only they told me the pin to unlock a small check in both outside. Then inside need to communicate by pad video call then where to told to scan QR code to register online. However, just couldn't submit due to unkown error. Chat again then only they help me to register and got the room pin number which is at block B (which was after probably 45mins since we arrived). After that trying to look for block B, no label on the buildings. Got in and find one by one, by the time we got into our room already an hour passed. Due to occupying the check-in both for too long during the check-in, we have irritated a few others waiting outside especially a middle age western couple. They we very rude to us after that and using impolite words after that. Bad experience......

Very recommended!
The place was very comfortable. Rooms were big and spacious, and the futon was great.
Also the communication and instructions for check in were good.
Food was very tasty, but I would add some extra butter or something. Dinner was exquisite

Beautiful local, great accommodation
Very comfortable and beautiful tatami accommodation. I stayed at the smaller building in the complex.
Dinner was cold as it was a bento box delivered in the late afternoon (food was good though).
The breakfast only offered a little bread bun, butter and jam for food. Not as good as in other places I stayed after Takahara.

Comfortable stay, clean rooms
Check in process could be somewhat streamlined but seems to work eventually. Dinner was filling, breakfast could be improved (? four bread rolls). It would be nice to be provided a lunch bento. Rooms were clean and comfortable, shower and toilet facilities commendable.

Ex Machina
It's a totally automated experience which is a bit strange in a walk designed to connect. However, wonderful design features and very comfortable. Nobody staying with me managed to get in without contacting their support.

Checkin was very stressful.
I found the checkin to be extremely stressful. I didn't receive an email 3 days before. I was trying to enter the code in the wrong building. Lucky someone else came and we figured out where to enter the code. It relied on have internet connection which is a big assumption for travellers and also in such a remote area. The 3 people that checked in that day all had the same problem.
The dinner was good but the breakfast was terrible. 4 bread rolls and jam. There was a full kitchen and I was told that I would have bought proper food to cook for breakfast.
There was a sauna and hot tub but we weren't allowed to use it. I found it very frustrating.

Lovely place but poor check in
The check in took nearly an hour in the pouring rain. Not what we needed after a long day hiking in the rain. Please change the system to something simpler. Multiple codes needed and webpages not loading and then the online help service we called cutting out was less than ideal.
Thank you to the lady there cleaning that was helped us navigate the check in system.
Once we got in everything was lovely and comfortable and beautiful. The dinner was tasty and perfect after a days hiking.

Modern place with thoughful design
The place is very modern and clean, and the facilities are user-friendly and well-designed. You have privacy despite some facilities being shared. An area of improvement is a quicker check-in procedure.

No host but accom great
There were no host here but the accom is new and very comfortable.
There were 3 rooms in the main complex but only one shower.
Each room had its own fridge and kettle which was nice. The fridge was stocked with free drinks (beers/juices/water) and plenty of bread rolls were provided as b/fast and coffee and teas.
The communal area and kitchen was very functional with plenty of cooking equipment microwave/fridge/cooktop ect should you wish. Dinner was a a very adequate bento box delivered soon after we checked in.
The check in process was interesting in that there was a telephone booth outside the cabin where you call up the staff and there is an iPad to download your passport and fill in your details for check in and they provide you with code to the cabin and into your individual rooms which has a keypad.
The communal loiungeroom/kitchen area was also good place to chat to your fellow hikers. There was also TV with Netflix and good wifi connection.
Overall, great new acccom and very comfort with mod cons, just missing the local host but some people may like that independence and avoiding the awkwardness in living in someone's house.

Beautiful but difficult
The location and accommodations were wonderful. We lost 90 minutes of our vacation and experienced significant stress accessing the building. We strongly advise revisions to this process or more clear and accurate information.

Top stay at kumano!
Everything about it was perfect. It felt so cosy and we enjoyed every little detail. The only small downside was breakfast - buns, butter and jam - we wish it had more ingredients and something savory. But dinner was delicious. We really felt like this could be our house.

Overly complicated
The accommodation was beautiful but the online check in was too complicated for what it was - it would have been way easier to have someone at the lodge for a couple of hours in the afternoon to process the handful of guests and check everything was in place. While the evening meal was lovely, breakfast hadn't been properly organised and we had to call up again to raid the locked store cupboard.

SEN. RETREAT TAKAHARA
The facility is brand new and very comfortable.
The check-in process is bad, very bad. Unclear, not automated at all. Many codes given, some don't work. The communication is not good and can be improved and simplified dramatically.
Moreover, we ordered supper and breakfast. The supper was a bento box, which was not enough for us. If we'd known we would not order it at all, and brought our own meal.
Worse than that, we paid for breakfast but only got 4 buns and some butter which is a disgrace.
Do not order meals with this place. Bring your own for the night and the following day.

Check in is confusing, impersonal and I would hate to try and do it if it's raining.
Cold bento box for dinner and n breakfast provided was a real disappointment. Only one milk provided per person so you need to decide on arrival if you want a tea then or wait till breakfast as you can't do both!
The space is very zen and modern but utterly cold and impersonal which is a shame on a pilgrimage walk.
We thought it very poor value.
