 Description

Comfortable Hongu Area Rental House

YAKIOHOUSE is a comfy, fully renovated, pastoral rental house in the Hongu area near the Kumano Kodo Kohechi route and relatively close to the Nakahechi as well. The owner is a photographer who fell in love with Hongu while visiting Wakayama Prefecture for a few years and eventually moved here to raise his family. YAKIOHOUSE is simple, clean, and modernized, located on a hill overlooking the Kumanogawa River and facing the Kohechi, perfect for not just Kumano Kodo hikers, but also for small groups or families wanting to relax a couple of days in the rural countryside.

Although not located in the onsen hot spring area (Yunomine, Kawayu, Wataze / Watarase), YAKIOHOUSE is one of many excellent options in the Greater Hongu area.

It is located just 10 minutes by bus from Kumano Hongu Taisha, and shuttle pickup from Hongu Taisha-mae can be reserved at booking.

YAKIOHOUSE can only accept reservations 4 months or less in advance.
Thank you for your understanding.

Amazing Stay and Hosts

Our favorite stay of the entire trip. Such nice and friendly hosts that made us feel at home. Communicative, friendly, and helpful - we had a lovely time getting to know them and staying in their guest-house. The guest-house is also a very thoughtfully refinished space with a great view and comfortable for tall people (196cm). The dinner we had hit the spot. Cannot recommend more!

I'm sorry for leaving this review so late, but I'm truly grateful to Kimi's family for their warm hospitality, the wonderful home, and the absolutely delicious food.

Absolutely amazing. This was the best lodging we had in Japan. The hosts took us to the onsen they go to and showed us their rice field by the giant torri gate. Very kind and welcoming. The location is perfect, right where the Kohechi pops out in to Yakio and a short walk from the finish in Hongu

Great place to stay

Highly recommend. Stayed here after day 3 of 3 on kumano kodo. Tone arranged to pick us up from the bus stop and drove us the short distance to his home. After we rested a bit he prepared a delicious BBQ and took us with him to a nearby onsen after. Location is close to 'center' of Hongu but out of the way enough that its very natural and peaceful. Tone and his wife Kimi are a pleasure.

Beautiful Self-Contained Cabin

Yakio House is outside of town but well worth the short trip (made even easier as my host collected me in Hongu). It was a luxury to have so much space and a private bathroom. Hosts were helpful and very friendly. I would also have to say the hotpot and lunchbox were both among the best meals on my trek.

Nice apartment with nice view

Nice apartment with nice view. Incredibly helpful and friendly hosts. Minuses were just a bit inconvenient location when coming from Hongu. And probably don't stay here it you don't like spiders 😀

Wonderful way to finish the Kumano Kodo

This was our final accommodation after completing the Nakahechi in Kumano Hongu Taisha, and it was absolutely amazing! The couple that runs YAKIOHOUSE is super nice, and we loved everything about our stay. Some highlights: - The house is about a 10-minute drive from the Hongu Taisha-mae bus stop, so they picked us up from the stop and dropped us back the next morning for our return bus to Kii-Tanabe. They prefer finalizing the pickup time via WhatsApp, so if you're an international visitor without a Japanese phone number, we'd recommend setting the app up **before** you visit Japan. - YAKIOHOUSE is a beautiful home that felt clean, cozy, and well-designed. We were charmed by its interior design, and its location away from the main town made it feel nice and secluded. There's no bathtub, but the shower is really nice, so no complaints there. Also the futons we slept on were super cozy and probably our favorite bedding of our entire Japan trip. - The meals were fantastic. Both dinner and breakfast were brought over to the house by the couple that runs the place, and the presentation and taste were top-notch. We chose the hot pot dinner option, and it really hit the spot after hiking 15+ miles. On top of that, we learned the rice that accompanied the meal had actually been grown by the YAKIOHOUSE owners; it was so good! - We loved interacting with the YAKIOHOUSE owners and their kids. We had some nice conversations about why they moved to the Hongu area and what it's like living in small town. They also gifted us some postcards and towels that they had personally designed, which was pretty cool. These personal interactions were a nice touch that made our stay even more memorable. Overall, we loved our stay at YAKIOHOUSE and wholeheartedly recommend it to other travelers!

A wonderful night under the stars

The most beautiful accommodation on our entire road trip, every detail in the residence maps the Kimi family's philosophy of living - minimalism and elegance. We ate the best Japanese hot pot of the trip, saw the most unforgettable starry night, and woke up in the morning to a picturesque view! We will be back.

Perfect stay, 5 stars recommendation

Our stay at Yakiohouse was truly a highlight of our trip. After a long 15km walk at Kumano Kodo, we arrived at the guest house feeling quite exhausted. It was such a joy to be greeted by the host family with a wonderfully warm welcome. The facilities were impeccably designed, and everything felt brand new. The futons were incredibly warm and cozy, and the shower and toilet were spotless and comfortable. The food was fantastic! We loved the BBQ, especially the Kumano Beef and rice. And the local beer was definitely one of the best I've ever tasted.

Yakiohouse is located just outside Hongu, set in a valley with Kumano River just outside, ever changing tree clad hillside to gaze upon. Made for a perfect week at the start of our trip from our busy lives. Off the beaten track but the perfect base to explore temples, walks, onsens and wonderful food using local transport and the incredible support of the owners, who went out of their way to make sure we had a great time. The owners speak English very well. This is a place to linger, yes use as a stop over but seriously consider staying longer. There are so many possibilities and with the support of the owners much can be achieved and learned. The owners organised all of our meals through local restaurants and they were amazing. We had a small child with us and the owners did everything they could to make our stay as easy and fun as possible. They even organised a surprise birthday cake for my mum's 70th birthday! Very special time, and special place and people. Highly recommend.
