Amazing walk on ancient trails in beautiful Cedar forest

That was the best part of my Japan trip. I already want to come back to walk more of the trail. I had a great experience booking everything through the kumano-travel site. Everything was super smooth and well organized.

Wonderful trip

Overall, this was a great route that I'd highly recommend. I followed the recommended trekking route on the first day. It was perfect -- just the right mix of challenging elevation changes and easy flats. On the second day, I followed the recommended route but also walked from Hongu Taisha to Yunomine Onsen by following the trail over the mountain instead of taking the bus from Hongu Taisha. I also did this route in less than the recommended time (total hiking time of 9 hours, including a lunch break and 1 hour spent walking around Hongu Taisha). I wouldn't recommend speed-hiking like this unless you're a quite experienced hiker; I hike and trail run a lot, and doing the route this quickly was difficult. The final stretch from Hongu Taisha to Yunomine Onsen was quite steep, and I understand why the recommended route has people taking the bus instead. I walked this last stretch from 5-6pm, and the majority of the hike was in the dark (mid-October), which was a little scary since I didn't see anybody else on that trail (but did see a mamushi!). I saw many more people on the first day of hiking than on the second.

Amazing experience

Walking the Kumano Kodo was an unforgettable experience. The trail is stunning, full of beauty and a magical atmosphere. I did the Nakahechi route – the first day was tough, but the second day felt easier and even more enjoyable. Along the way, I met amazing people that made the journey even more special. The accommodations were perfect: comfortable rooms, warm hospitality, relaxing baths, and delicious food. Everything exceeded my expectations and made me feel cared for at every stop. Overall, this trip was wonderful, far beyond what I imagined. I am extremely happy with the experience and I truly hope to return one day.

Challenging But Worth It!

The four day trip is a no-joke hike. Be prepared for a very long second day with a lot of elevation, but it's worth every step. Our hosts were amazing, the trail was beautiful and easy to follow, and Hongu Taisha was such a beautiful place. I wish we had had the time to go see the other two, but I suppose we'll just have to come back when we finish the Dual Pilgrim requirements!

Kumano Travel were very helpful when it became clear we had made an error in our travel and were a day late to start our Kumano Kodo trip. Mako called after hours and helped to establish a plan that would help us complete at least some of this hike, then met us at the Tanabe bus stop to confirm - we were very appreciative.

The trek was tougher than we expected. Being city kids, Nature really reminded us of how great she really is. Best to go when it's nice and dry. Avoid rainy season as the trail will be slippery.

The trip of a lifetime

I planned for this trip for a long time. Even though I needed to cut my first day short (despite all physical training I did there was no way to prepare for the humidity!), there were many other options for me to hike the beautiful and sacred Kumano Kodo path. I will remember this trip all my life.

A wonderful introduction to the mountains.

The trek was wonderful, it was easier than we anticipated to figure out bus routes and timetables, especially thanks to the fabulous staff at the Tanabe Information centre. The trails were exceptionally well marked and maintained, easy to follow, but not always easy to climb! We thought we were in better shape. Beautiful vistas, interesting people en route and lots of silence and peaceful forest time.

Kumano Kodo trek 2 days walk

The walk was great for each section (day 1 and day 2), very easy to find the route with the signage, and less difficult than originally planned (that could be because we are an active family). Our kids aged 8 and 10 managed to complete both days too, so I would definitely recommend the hike to active families.

Great Trek

A great trek through some wonderful scenery. The experience I had during the past few days has certainly been a highlight of my year and I won’t forget the friendliness and hospitality of the all the people I encountered on this trek. A manageable two full days of walking, even while carrying all my own clothes, etc in a 65L trekking backpack.. The trail was very well marked and the detours (currently two) were also well signposted. The whole experience was great and I will not hesitate to do it again and extend my stay to include some of the other routes in the future.

Awesome!

We did two hikes along Kumano Kodo: From Takijiri to Chikatsuyu, and from Doyukawabashi to Kumano Hongu Taisha. Both routes were amazing. The scenery was beautiful and had varied sights, there were clear directions and resting spots (including tea houses), and it was great that we were able to see the different shrines and learn about the history of the pilgrimage trail along the way. We also enjoyed collecting stamps at each shrine.

Unforgettable, and without doubt the absolutely best part of our two week stay in Japan!

The route is fantastic! Day 1 starts of with a very steep climb, and we were grateful for the elevation maps that were provided online and by the tourist information, so that we could plan our hike. We did the full route on day 2, which is quite tough but not impossible if you are prepared to push hard and not afraid of hills. We set out before 06.00 and kept a good pace, and arrived at the Shrine in time for the last bus to Youmine Onsen where we stayed night 2. Notably, the bus connections are not very well aligned with the hikes, and there is barely any way to get food along the route, so it is important to come well preparated. Nevertheless, the views, trees, birds, flowers, shrines, villages and animals that you will see during the route are absolutely priceless, and I could not recommend it more.

Harder than Machu Picchu!

We only walked for two days and less than 35km, but it was extremely difficult. Day 1 was only 13.5km, but a lot of steep climbs and descents in hot, humid weather made us very tired at the end of the day. We were very concerned about day 2 (24km) so decided to catch the bus at the 19km mark. The geography was less difficult, but again, the heat and the humidity made us very tired when we finished. The countryside is very beautiful and we will always remember this, but I would not recommend the walk in these conditions (August). Also, on day 2, there was a 12km stretch with no water or drink stops, which means you should carry at least 1.5li per person. Perhaps more.

Brilliant, Fantastic, Wonderful, Amazing... No adequate superlatives.

Doing the Kumano Kodo was one of the best travelling experiences I've ever had. The route is lined with innumerable little shrines which really put you in touch with the sense of tradition and history that the pilgrim routes encapsulate. To do all 38km of the route in two days of trekking is perhaps a bit ambitious. If we were to do it again, we would have added in another day into the itinerary to break it up a bit. Because of the Spring Festival in Hongu we actually decided to forego the second day's trekking and caught the bus straight there from Chikatsuyu. The festival itself turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip to Japan. Again, if I were to do it all again I would add another day in order to enjoy a full day of festivities in Hongu. What an amazing and beautiful experience.

Amazing experience

I was hiking in early Nov and lucky to have beautiful sunny weather (just missed a few typhoons). I found the trail hard work (lots of steep steps for short legs!) but manageable. Day one is mostly in forests, day two starts on roads and through villages so you get panoramic views and can make good time before the mountain passes. Walking poles are essential, some of the descents are on loose rocks/twigs etc, and if it rained there are places that would be tricky and slippy. I made good time on the first day Takijiri to Chikatsuyu, could go at a relaxed pace, but from Chikatsuyu to Hongu was a lot slower due to the descents, I just managed to get the mid-afternoon bus at Hosshinmon-oji (there are only about 4 a day) as I wasn't up for another 7km. I found another place to stay in order to have an extra night/day to walk the loop from Yunomine Onsen to Hongu, and really enjoyed doing that rather than pushing to walk further on day two. Note that Akagi-goe trailhead when you're coming from Chikatsuyu starts with a very steep ascent, with steps and switchbacks up a hill, so think carefully if you're tempted to take that route to Yunomine Onsen instead of going to Hongu!

Nice trek, but we expected a bit more from it

It is not an easy path, be prepared for quite some steep and long climbs. We generally liked it, although I expected maybe a bit more "spectacle" (waterfalls, temples, villages, viewpoints, rice paddies, etc). Sometimes you are walking for hours in a dark forest. Also, the forest is not very diverse in terms of variety of plants and trees.

Lovely trek

We did a two day trek from Takijiri to Hongu. There was a good variety of forest, small villages and some good views - and of course a great sense of history. Signposting is excellent and we came across a cute cafe on the first day and a local stall set up in a shelter on the second day. We had one wet day, but that didn't spoil the enjoyment, and there are plenty of shelters to stop in along the way.

An incredible experience

This hike is one of the most magical and rewarding hikes I have ever been on. Note that it is not for the faint-hearted or unfit person. Those 13km from Takijiri-oji to Chikatsuyu village are really tough kilometers where one is either going up or down. But what scenery! What wonderful shrines lie to be discovered along the trail. We were too tired and sore the next day to attempt the full 24km walk (option 1) so we went for Option 3 instead. This was a wonderful choice, as the 7km more gentle hike from outside Kumano Hongu Taisha all the way back into the town via the back of the shrine, was a great way to spend the second day. I feel blessed and privileged to have been able to see and experience such spiritual wonders. The tourist offices Tanabe and Hongu were brilliant as well.

Takijiri to Hongu | Itinerary 2

This was the only itinerary available to us by the time we booked, but we were very pleased with it. But the second day was long for the two older members of our group, even with the first short segment by bus. We walked the Akagi-goe route directly to Yunomine, but while it was shorter than the route to Hongu, it had more elevation gain, and we might have been better to walk to Hongu instead. We had been concerned about catching the last bus from Hongu from Yunomine, but we later learned that Ryokan Yunomineso would have picked us up in Hongu.

We and our children loved to walk through the enchanted forests and the wonderful landscape. We met little other walkers and had some interesting exchanges with them. Some of the shrines are beautiful and mystic. The Ryokan were just what we needed after each of the two days walking efforts.

I highly recommend this hike for anyone and everyone. However, you must be in moderate hiking shape as some parts are challenging. It is definitely long and takes a bit of stamina. I cannot iterate in words how gorgeous this hike was. The people we met along the way were the most wonderful people I've met in my life. This place will have a special place in my heart for life. beautiful, quiet and contemplative

After big cities like Tokyo, it is the perfect place and perfect trek to enjoy the beauty and the serenity of the countryside and mountains of Japan in a spiritual athmosphere. Furthermore, everything is very convenient there and thanks to the clarity of maps and path sign, you can't get lost there, the only thing to do is to enjoy the beauty before your eyes.

The walk was great

The walk from Takajiri to Chikatsuyu was fantastic but a bit harder work than we expected. On the second day we did the short walk (option 3), had lunch in Hongu at the fantastic udon noodle place near the steps to the shrine (it is in a great modern building) and then did the walk from Hongu to the Y Onsen rather than catch the bus. This was a great option as the short walk was too short but the other two options seemed a bit too gruelling for what we wanted.

Nakahechi route 2016/10/06

We had a very good time and were exceptionnaly lucky with the weather. The multiple possible access by bus make the trek easier as there is some tricky part and long hours walking. But worth it ! The mix of forest, religious aspects and onsen city is fantastic. We were a bit surprised to see that some of the shrines were barely maintained ! As well as we did not meet a lot of japanese people walking but mainly foreigners ! But a very nice experience and an unusual way to visit Japan.

Adjusted our walk.

The first day, from Takijiri to Chikatsuyu, 13 km, was very difficult for us. Even though it was difficult we enjoyed it very much and the sense of accomplishment was priceless! We are seniors (ages 65 and 69). The next day, we decided to take the bus all the way to the Hongu Taisha, then catch another bus to Hosshinmon, and walk the last 6 km of the Nakamichi trail. This was very enjoyable and do-able.

Wonderful Experience

I had the most wonderful experience hiking through the Kumano Kodo. At first, as the train pulled in to Tanabe and all I could see were industrial buildings, I doubted my choice. However, a night in Tanabe was a relaxing way to recharge before setting off on the hike. The hike itself is a mix of forests, river valleys and mountain ridges. There is a lot of elevation changes - I highly recommend a walking stick, which you can purchase from the visitor centre in Takijiri. The trails are well marked and in excellent condition. I barely saw another person while I was on the trail. It was an awe-inspiring way to travel and made me appreciate the sites and shrines that much more.

Breathtaking

Do it. Do it. Do it. Take you time. Enjoy the scenery and the people. Be a good visitor. But beyond everything please go and see it before it gets too crowded and becomes yet another crowded touristy hike. It is not an easy walk, but it is well signposted, safe and the rewards are there for those to that go - so do your homework (and Kumano Travel are an essential and amazing resource). The Ojis and temples are beautiful, but the real champion here is the mountains, the region, and the people. This place is breathtaking.

A very well organised and thought out route

I thoroughly enjoyed this hike, it was lovely walking through the forest, through small villages and seeing the amazing views from the top of the hills were amazing. I went further on day one to Kobiro-oji, as had reached Chikatsuyu-oji by 130pm - it was great to do the extra 7kms that I was going to skip on day two, so I loved the fact that I did the whole section from Takijiri-oji to Hongu in the two days. A hike I will recommend to fellow hikers, and good to meet other hikers on the route Amazing!

Lovely trip! Challenging trail

This is a great trip. Note that the trail, particularly on day one, has a lot of gain-- it's not always obvious form the guide because it's up and down (so the amount listed is a balance of the two). Some of the steepest stairs I've trekked on, both up and down. Recommend hiking poles if you have any knee issues or are accustomed to using them. Give yourself plenty of time. Recommend bringing water tabs for day 2, little access to clean water. Beautiful area!
