The Best Combination of Japanese and Western Experience
The second day on our Kumano Kodo is another raining day. We arrived at Minshuku 3rd place Kumano Kodo at 3pm. The host Tetsu-san took us right to the guest house - a >100 year old Japanese house rebuilt by Tetsu-san and another builder. The renovation was so wonderful that it restore all the Japanese charm and added all the necessary amenities. Bathroom, toilet and full-equipped kitchen (although we didn't get to use it). The house include Japanese bedroom, living room, foyer and a balcony with two unique chairs. The dinner was served at separate restaurant area decorated with wonderful Japanese art pieces. Tetsu was such a wonderful chef. He served many dishes of vegetables, chicken and pork. All meticulously prepared and delicious. My husband has Sake and we both drank Tetsu-san's plum wine. The Miso soup was made with miso made by Tetsu-san himself, so tasty. Next morning's breakfast was western style with Tetsu-san touch. The thick toast and the fried eggs were both so wonderful. The coffee was also great. This really shows Tetsu-san's skill in all different types of cooking. By the way, his English is also wonderful. What is also exceptional is the lunch box Tetsu-san prepared. It was Onigiri of different types made with cured plums, Tsukemoto and others. It included small dishes carefully cooked and packed by Tetsu-san. It made our lunch break highly enjoyable during our long hike. We would return to this place if we ever do Kumano Kodo route other hikes.

Minshuku 3rd Place
Minshuku was our favorite stay. The host, Tetsu (I apologize if I spelled your name wrong), is very friendly and very passionate about hosting travelers. He is a fantastic chef and uses local ingredients as much as possible. He would tell us about each dish - what it was, where the ingredients came from, how it was prepared. The view cannot be beat, and it's location was perfect being right alongside the trail.

Fine dining in a quiet place on Kumano Kodo Path
The owner Tetsu-san is a unique person and a great chef! He explains all the ingredients and the area enthusiastically. The dinner and breakfast he prepared was unmatched. Also the launch box, which, normally you would expect something ordinary, but even the lunch box was with full of details and colors. The accomodation is right on Kumano Kodo Nakahechi trail. There are 2 spots where you can see a great sunset view. If you are lucky, you can see the wild monkeys around. The place is huge. Big enough for multiple people stay. It is a traditional old Japanese monument, the interior is classic. After sunset only sound you will hear around is the night itself. The accomodation is not in Chikatsuya centrum. After Chikatsuya you have to walk (ascending) about 2-3 km more at least. Great place to stay in, strongly recommend!

This was our favorite accommodation because the owner was so friendly and helpful. The accommodation was traditional style and the bathroom while clean was very small. Only downside was that the gas heater was smelly and so we had to turn it off but then got very cold. The meals were sensational and our host explained everything we were eating. Highly recommend this accommodation.
