This place was amazing

Awesome host. Refinished the traditional Japanese style house we stayed in with his own hands. Made us a delicious dinner, breakfast and bento box. Overall, took such good care of us. Also, staying here will shorten your day 3 hike by about a mile. And day 3 is long so you will appreciate it.

Michelin-level quality dinner

A truly unforgettable stay on the Kumano Kodo. The host was wonderfully flexible and kindly allowed me to check in early, which I really appreciated after hiking. The house is beautifully located on a scenic hilltop, about a 15-minute walk from the bus stop, with a peaceful mountain atmosphere. The dinner was absolutely outstanding — Michelin-level quality, with around 60% of the ingredients coming from the host’s own garden. The homemade plum wine and handmade ice cream were especially memorable. Breakfast and the lunch box were also thoughtful and generous. This was easily the most unforgettable meal of my entire Kumano journey.

The welcome waiting at the top is worth every step

I highly recommend this guesthouse to anyone walking the Kumano Kodo. The owner is incredibly warm and caring, and genuinely looks after every aspect of your journey. From the moment we arrived, we felt welcomed and supported. The food deserves special mention. Every dish was thoughtfully prepared with great attention to ingredients and presentation. After many trips to Japan, I can honestly say this was one of the best meals I have ever had here. Dinner was exceptional, breakfast was wonderful, and even the lunch box prepared for our hike was beautifully made and absolutely delicious. ⚠️One thing future hikers should be aware of: the guesthouse is located about a 30-minute uphill walk from Chikatsuyu-oji. We did not fully realize this when planning our day, and climbing that final stretch while already exhausted from hiking was quite challenging. However, once we arrived, the hospitality, comfort, and outstanding food made every step worthwhile. Despite the extra climb, this was one of our favorite accommodations on the Kumano Kodo, and we would gladly stay here again.

Best accommodation & host ever!

I had such a lovely time staying at this guesthouse. The host was super friendly and spoke good English! He made sure I had the best stay ever with details on the house, cooking fantastic dinners with lots of local specialities and even checking the weather for the upcoming days. The house itself was just incredible, the best house I stayed in Japan. Fully authentic in Japanese style, I loved it so much! And the view on the mountains was just incredible. Make sure not to arrive to late if you only spend one night there to make sure you can enjoy it properly. I wish I could have staying longer! The food was just amazing between dinner, breakfast & lunch box - great in quantity and options. One of the best meal I had. It’s definitely worth it, I can only highly recommend!

An incredible find

A house that just kept going. Huge and traditional but comfy too. It was sad to leave after only 1 day because we didn’t get to use it properly. The food was also amazing, so fresh. Huge recommendation.

We stayed one night after completing the second stage of the Nakahechi trek. The accommodations are older than some of the others we stayed in, but they have a lot of character. The food was terrific and the host is friendly and gave good advice about completing the next stage.
