If you are taking the bus from Hongu, Tsudoi is closest to the Kameya-Mae bus stop and shares an entrance with the Kawayu Public Bath. The host will give you a token to use the Public Bath (closes at 20:00) and will provide soap, shampoo and towels. If you brought a swimsuit, there is an outdoor bath across the river or you can try your hand digging your own onsen in the river bed. The rooms are clean and spacious, and the kitchen well stocked. The friendly talkative host runs a takoyaki stall in a nearby village. He gave me some recommendations for dinner (try the wild ayu and mehari zushi), made sure I had enough snacks for the evening and the next day, and offered to drop me off at the Ukegawa access point for the Kogumotori-goe trailhead (~25 min/2 K walk). He is such a lovely gentleman, and we were lucky enough to see two snow monkeys on our morning drive.

Great location in Kawayu onsen
There was no room for us in a traditional guesthouse so we got this room without meals. The place was clean and comfortable. A very friendly host showed up and offered us toast and tea/coffee for breakfast even though it said no meals, a pleasant surprise. Host speaks no English and we received no information in advance of our stay, but he came over minutes after our arrival and let us in. We got tickets for the onsen next door because there is no shower in the house, but ended up not using them and opted for the outdoor onsen in the river instead. Amazing! Overall, a great stop along the Kumano Kodo:)
