The Tanabe City Kumano Tourism Bureau is a tiny office with a huge mission—to develop and promote Japan’s remote spiritual heartland, into a quality, sustainable tourism destination open to the world. In 2004 this region was registered as UNESCO World Heritage and in 2005 a major political merger of 4 rural communities and Tanabe City took place. These dramatic changes required a new and innovative approach to tourism development. Tanabe City decided to create a new office with a mandate to oversee the city and region in totality; a half-public, half-private entity called the Tanabe City Kumano Tourism Bureau—the first of its kind in Japan.

Comprehensive and Very Useful
Although our trip to Japan and the Kumano Kodo is not for another nine or ten months this pack is already really helpful for our preparations. The book is full of information that will help us get the most enjoyment out of the experience, and the detailed route maps and guides will also be invaluable when we are on the paths.

I preordered 2 pilgrim packs prior to my hike. I found the maps useful for planning the route I would take. My hiking partner found the book very informative. All of the information in the pack seemed to be available in Tanabe, but it was nice to have it months earlier to plan the adventure.

Pilgrim Pack review
I ordered the Pilgrim pack and received it pretty fast. I am traveling in September and am glad I ordered it ahead of time. There is so much information. The information is dense and intensive but you can take what you want. If you need it, it's there. Background, history, mythology, the works. The big map has quite a lot of detail. My one quibble is the small print in the book. A little hard to read at my age. But totally understand the need to provide that amount of information in a portable package.

Fantastic resource. Everything you need in one place. I missed that the pack came with two stamp booklets, so ordered an extra I didn't need. There are several maps with different levels of detail that can be hard to match up at times. There are places that are referred to by different names that gets a bit confusing. Might be named for town on one map but named for a landmark on another. I would love the option to select an additional route map booklet- I'm doing the Nakahechi trail, but would like to incorporate part of the Iseji route and would have ordered that booklet as well. But overall, this is a great packet, totally worth the price.

This is about the Dual Pilgrim pack with guidebook and maps. The communication was excellent and prompt. It can seem a bit "rigid" for those ordering in the West but I really appreciate the efficiency and clarity because there is no ambiguity or doubt about the rules and what is expected. Wonderful, inspiring and practical
We love the pilgrim pack! The information about Kumano’s spiritual history is so incredible and inspiring to read about. You do not need the guide book to have a successful walk but if you are at all curious about the area, it is pretty comprehensive. It also has maps as well as a stamp book for the dual pilgrim program. However, if you don't opt to get this, the information can be had in Tanabe at the tourist information center next to the trainstation.

Amazing Experience
This has been one of the most memorable experiences I have ever had. I traveled 5D/4N through the Kumano Kodo Trail. I would have loved to have done 7 days. Everything was magical, from the amazing trails, clearly marked, easy to travel, to the helpful heritage center people, to the public busses and accomodations I pre-booked. A few suggestions: Stay in Tanabe before starting the voyage. I was a bit stressed arriving late due to a missed train. Therefore I had to pay for a taxi to get to the trail head because I missed the bus. It would have been helpful to have had the time to plan out everything before hitting the trail. Also, the maps were of great help. I didn't bring the book but the pilgrimage pack had all the maps I needed. It was great to get to review them beforehand.

The official guide pack is excellent! A nicely made guidebook and an assortment of maps help put things into perspective. Highly recommended for anyone thinking about visiting the region. I think that the plastic sleeve was slightly too small for the amount of items that was crammed in there. When it arrived in the post, the sleeve had already split open at the bottom.

I'm very happy with the pack, but the book was put in a Kumano Travel bag, which is a nice Idea, but during shipping the bag seemed to have ripped at multiple sides with the Movement of the Book, which is a shame, since i really like the Bag. I'm happy with the book and the maps and pamplets i received alongside the book. I think they will be important for my planning of the trip for this August.

Pilgrim Pack Review
The Pilgrim Pack got send within a day after i paid for it. It took one week to arrive at the customs office in the Netherlands. The Official Guide Book is an excellent book with a lot of information including beautiful pictures of all the animals and sites. The guide maps of the Nakahechi and Kohechi trails give ample information of everything you will encounter on the trails.

A very complete guide
I received the Official Pilgrim Guide within days of ordering it. The contents are very complete and answer just about every question I had about the Kumano Kodo Pilgrim Trail. I have not yet visited the Kii Tanabe area since my plans have been disrupted by the Pandemic. But I can say that the many resources I found online and through joining the travel assistance from the Travel Bureau have been excellent. Quite thorough and informative. These resources have eased our concerns about venturing into an unknown area with possible communication issues. Once the world situation improves we plan to walk the Kumano Kodo and visit the region.

Wow! The guidebook, maps, and other material makes a splendid package, all stored neatly in a waterproof pouch, which will come in very handy. The value of this book is as an introduction and planning asset. It enables you to plan your whole trip, understand the issues involved and make all the decisions needed before you arrive. When walking you really only need the Brochure and Maps; every kg not carried is good. Good value. I believe that without the help of Tanabe City Kumano Tourism Bureau it would be difficult to plan the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage. They were very helpful in organizing this journey for us.

When our boat trip was cancelled i felt we could have been offered some alternative ideas. In the end we worked out ourselves we could do the jet boat tour on the river instead but no one mentioned this. Otherwise service was very friendly and efficient.

Pilgram Pack
When completing request for the Pilgrim Pack I was confused since it followed the reservation request process. I put down a different date then my actual trip in November 2019. I have successfully received my packet. However, I have not completed my trip it is scheduled for November 20-23, 2019.

Detailed and well-researched guide book & helpful pack
The guide book is really interesting and well-written, got me very excited for the trip and learned lots about the local area and culture which made it even more special. I think the remaining contents of the pack is all available (for free) at the Tourist Information Centre in Tanabe, but I liked having it well before the trip so I felt more prepared and the plastic wallet was useful for carrying documents on the trip.

Excellent signage on trail. Guide book very helpful. Accommodation where all great. Only problem we came across was a section of trail we planned to hike was closed so we had to take a longer route- feel like we should have been informed at the office when we stored our luggage.

The individuals at Tanabe City Kumano Tourism Bureau were excellent. They were helpful and knowledgeable about the trail and current trail conditions. And when the typhoon hit, they made sure hikers were aware that they shouldn't be hiking. The Official Guide Book for Kumano Kodo Nakahechi -- and Kohechi -- was well done. Great maps showing the locations of everything needed. The pilgrim pack was awesome too. Lodgings and food were excellent.

The Kumano Kodo was part of a 3 week trip to Japan, travelling with 2 young boys. Initially, we were a bit anxious about this part of the trip as there are so many logistics. The Tourist Bureau could not have been any better. It was very straightforward to book the trip with the help of the office and organise luggage transfer. The office were very responsible to our emails. The guides were all great. Highly recommended. The highlight of our trip.

I found the guidebook, and the map booklet in particular, very useful. The packet also contained a stamp collection booklet for the Kumano Kodo and El Camino de Santiago. However, I was very disappointed to find out that after I had completely finished my trek, that there are special stamp books that we can buy, which once filled, we can submit for a certificate for walking the trails. I don’t know why these books aren’t mentioned anywhere in the Guide book.

We would never have been able to visit Kumano area without the expert help from Kumano Travel Bureau - they are simply the best. Everything was made easy for us to do what we anted to do , and everything wnet to plan when we were there. Very informative book
My husband and I found the official guide book really informative. It was interesting to learn more about the places we visited (and the places we didn't!). We were thankful for the section on local wildlife as we did run into a snake or two! It's a nicely laid out book and serves as a nice memento after the trip.

Nakahechi pilgrimage 7 days

A very good guide book of Kumano Kodo
It contains nearly all necessary information for those planning a hike through the trails. But it lacks information on the choices of accommodations. The information site on the internet is also not very helpful on this. The bus schedules can be downloaded from the internet site.

Friendly and helpful
I’m glad we started the Kumano Kodo with a night in Tanabe because it gave us the chance to visit this travel office and receive excellent advice and helpful information. I also bought a terrific Kumano Kodo t-shirt here, but be warned they shrink a little when washed so I suggest getting a size bigger.

Before I received this material from the Tanabe City Kumano Tourism Bureau I felt unsure on how to plan a journey to this 'Paradise on Earth'. Fantastic Travel Guide
My husband & I are planning a trip to Kumano in October 2017 and found this guide book on the tourism bureau Web site. The book arrived in the U.K. really quickly and it is a fantastic little book full of helpful information as well as great hints & tips for the Kumano Kodo.
