Terrible toilet, long walk from the kumano kodo path.
The lady in charge was very nice to us. However, the house seems to be and old warehouse or workshop reconverted into a guest house. It’s called shitanoie, the lower house, and for a good reason, it takes a long walking detour from the kumano kodo path downhill. The worst offender was the toilet, which doesn’t use running water but a kind of muddy earth in which you do your stuff and then use a lever to mix everything. Veeery smelly.

Great position
Slept super well listening to the sound of the river. Fabulous position, close to supermarket and bus stop. Best composting toilet I’ve ever seen

It works
The guest house is some 5km away from Hongu, which is great if you are finishing your day late and might not get to the shrine before they close, but can be an annoyance if you have to go back and forth. Also, there is nothing but a supermarket nearby. The room is a common room without curtains, so the sun will wake you up early in the morning. On the other hand, when I got there, there was nobody, so I unpacked and went to the supermarket, there the manager approached me and explained me the details.
