 Description

Guest House Annex on the Way to Takijiri-oji

Guest House Kiyohime 3 is the annex with rental rooms in addition to the nearby Guest House Kiyohime. It is a two-story house in the small settlement of Manago, ~2 km south of Takijiri-oji (~20 min walk) just off, or uphill, from route 311. This guesthouse offers two rooms with shared bath, toilet, kitchen, and living space. It was renovated to host walkers along the Kumano Kodo by the owner who frequently travels the world with his job as a dog breeder.  He noticed more and more international pilgrims and wanted to extend his hospitality to those who visited the area. Guest House Kiyohime 3 is convenient for those wanting to overnight somewhat closer to Takijiri-oji, ideal for Kumano Kodo walkers, but also those interested in longer stays.

● For guests interested in private suites, consider Guest House Kiyohime just a 1 minute walk away.

● Note: the closest bus stop is Kiyohime, not Takijiri. See Access notes below.

Hiroki and Naoko were incredible hosts. Hiroki thoughtfully picked us up in Takahara and was very easy to communicate with. The food was exceptional - we felt so grateful for the thought and time that went into the preparation, especially the accommodation of our allergies. It was an exceptional stay!

This was my first accommodation on the Nakahechi Route, and I'm so grateful it was. It's a little off the trail, but they picked me up near the Takahara parking lot. It was very easy to coordinate via WhatsApp, and the next day the next day they took me back to the same spot to continue the trail. The owners are very kind, the accommodation is modern, very clean, and comfortable. The food was incredible, beautifully presented. Thank you for hosting me!

Great service!

This guest house is a 15 minute drive from the trailhead, but the host shuttles you back and forth and was very responsive and communicative. The room was fine, bathroom was fine. They had a bath and laundry, which we definitely would have used had we been further into the trail. The meals were maybe the best we had the whole time and the hosts were very welcoming. They also provided some extra tea and coffee, which was a nice perk.

Absolutely flawless stay

This is a Minshuku out of Takahara area, but the owners who are a nice couple provide a free shuttle transportation to and from the Takahara main rest area. My building had a massage chair which was awesome after the hike. Now, the food was absolutely the highlight, really tasty and fresh. Absolutely made with love! I saw the owner bring in a fresh out of the water fish to cook for dinner. Highly recommended

A Gem!

The "15 minute drive" had me worried, but staying here turned out to be one of the highlights of my trip. Food was amazing, and the pickup from Takahara was very smooth - communication via WhatsApp was excellent. The hosts are wonderful, warm and I think they genuinely loved taking care of their guests. A hidden gem. Highly recommend.

Incredible Care and Food

Hiroki and Naoko are the most incredible hosts. Whether it was sending us photos of our stay through WhatsApp or Naoko’s note included in our lunch box, we immediately felt cared for and looked after like family. They treated us to the best meals on the Kumano Kodo and one of our favorites during all of our two weeks in Japan. The sukiyaki at dinner was to DIE for, and the crab was caught by Hiroki that morning. What a gift to discover this lovely resting place.

Stayed in Kiyohime 3. I believe the hosts live in the same building. The building is so exquisitely furnished the dining room most especially. The guests from the other 2 buildings joined us in the dining room. It was great conversation. The food was extremely high end. The hosts let us know their son was a chef at a high end sushi restaurant in Tokyo and had taught them a lot about how to prepare food.

Best guest house!

Staying here after my first walk in the Kumano Kodo raised the bar so high for the next guesthouses. They picked me up at the bus stop, which was close from their home, and cooked us the best meal ever. I am vegan and they made sure everything on my meal was plant based. They even made vegan sushi for me. Breakfast and lunchbow were also amazing. Their house is warm, and welcoming. The room was big enough and had everything I needed. They also have a massage chair! (for free). You can book the luggage service with them. I hope you have same luck as me and get to stay with this amazing family.

PERFECT start for the Kumano Kodo

We stayed here for the first night of our Kumano Kodo trek. Everything was more than ideal for those purpose: clear, quick communication, warm smiles, transportation to and from the trailhead, a chance to connect with other travelers, and an absolutely amazing meal. The hosts have an excellent attention to detail and we’re very grateful for our stay with them.

Convenience and ease for Takajiri or Takahara

Food was delux, very good. Host picked us up from the bus stop first afternoon and dropped us off at the trailhead next day with other hikers, which was very convenient and time saving! The house was nice and well maintained. Shared bathroom made us interact with others, "you need the shower now?", which helped for conversation that flowed into meal time. Met other guests who we connected with through out the trail.

Dinner was amazing!

Dinner was a table covered in small dishes of the most beautiful food. What a great way to celebrate our first day of hiking. Kiyohime is a great place to stay. It is off trail but that is really no problem because they provide a shuttle service to pick up hikers and drop them off the next morning.

Hiroki and Naoko were outstanding hosts! The food and service were amazing. We really appreciated being picked up from Takijiri-Oji and dropped off the next morning. This was our favorite stay on the Kumano Kodo. The hosts are extremely communicative over WhatsApp (a unique characteristic compared to other accommodations), incredibly and thoughtfully hospitable (go out of their way to make sure you are comfortable), and created a wonderful and delicious dining experience. Don’t worry about the shuttle component, they make it easy and convenient and it’s worth the stay at their lovely home.

Fantastic food and conversational company

I honestly think this was the absolute best food during our entire trip to Japan - absolutely delicious and I would give six stars if I could. Naoko-san really knows what she's doing. We loved being able to chat with some other hikers at our table as well and see what their travel plans were as well. This was also the only guest house we stayed in that offered complementary pick up and drop off conveniently at the same spot in Takahara - a great resting waypoint at the end of our first day. Everyone was friendly and the entire guest house was immaculately clean. Thank you. - Bryan and Adel

Absolutely loved staying here

My favorite place that I stayed! Such a nice couple runs this guesthouse. They really went out of their way to make us feel at home. They picked us up in Takahara and dropped us back off at Takahara in the morning to continue our hike. Their son is a sushi chef in Tokyo and they have learned a lot about cooking from him. We arrived to huge fresh fish in their entrance having just been caught by their friend two hours before, and learning we'd have fresh sashimi for dinner. The dinner, breakfast, and even our lunch box were all phenomenal. Fantastic fantastic food. And it was so nice to all eat together with the other guests (8 of us altogether). Bedroom was very comfortable and quiet, and I was able to wash my clothes and dry my hiking shoes after the rain. Top experience!

The best guest house and experience of my trip!

Hiroki and Naoko are the sweetest couple and go above and beyond to make sure you're comfortable and well fed for the trail! From the moment of pick up I felt so comfortable as a solo female traveller. Hiroki drove me from and to the trail head for 2 days when I couldn't find accomodation in Chikatsuyu, so that I could continue to hike each part of the trail and come back to their guesthouse at night - this was such a kind offer! The meals are incredible and unique, a great way to experience traditional Japanese cuisine! The guesthouse was so spacious, clean and had everything I needed to dry out my gear after a heavy rain day. I could not recommend this place more!

I highly recommend this guest house. It was very comfortable, the host was delightful and the food was simply outstanding -- really spectacular. A great place to stay at the start of the Nakahechi route!

I stayed at Guest House Kiyohime 3 on the first night of my hike and had a fantastic stay. The guesthouse is a 15 minute drive away from Takahara but the transfer was very smooth due to the host's clear communication, so I did not mind at all. My room was spacious and tidy and I had access to clean and well stocked shared bathrooms. The food provided at dinner, breakfast and in the bento box was delicious, fresh and just what I needed to fuel me for my walk the next day. I would highly recommend this accommodation!

I enjoyed my stay here. It is about a 15 minute drive from Takahara but the area is very quiet and the space was comfortable and really lovely for a good rest. The hosts were kind and friendly, even teaching me about a local bird I ended up seeing on the entire Kumano Kodo. The food was amazing and some of the best meals I had while in Japan. I had dinner, breakfast and the lunch box. The hosts pick you up from Takahara at 3pm and take you back at 8am to start the walk. Both pick up and drop off times were more than sufficient for my walks each day.

Vegetarianism and gluten free foods are not common in the Japanese countryside. Please double-check the meal options that are possible with each service provider to make sure that it meets your needs.

FISH STOCK: Often being able to eat trace amounts of the ubiquitous Katsuo Dashi (fish stock) makes it easier to find vegetarian options.

GLUTEN: For those who are not intorelant to gluten or Celiac then choosing Gluten Free "With Miso and Soy Sauce" will increase your options.
