Description
Mountain-view Homestay
Keyaki is a house perched on the upper end of the ridge top settlement of Takahara along the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route.
It is a long-narrow building with a hallway down the middle: guest rooms and café (dining room) on one side (with panoramic mountain views!) and the family’s rooms on the other.
There is a small yard in front of the house for relaxing outside to enjoy the view.
The two guestrooms each have ensuite bath and toilet. Futons are laid out on an elevated tatami platform.
Homemade meals are served in the café.
Please note that the family (with young children) also lives in this house.
This is the same young couple who manages the nearby Suzushiro rental cottage.

Highly Recommend
After the hard first day trekking from Takajiri Oji it was a blessing to stay the night at this wonderful small homestay. The young couple who run it are delightful and the meals were exceptional. There are only two rooms - each large with their own private en-suite and outside deck (and amazing view). Book early.

I don't know what else to say except the highest rating! The owner is very friendly, the food is delicious, the rooms are spacious, clean, and modern, and Minsu is located right on the Kumano Kodo Trail, making it a truly exceptional guesthouse for those exploring the Kumano Kodo Trail. In addition, the rooms all have views, which are very beautiful.

Stunning
The views, the food, the room, and the family were all wonderful. Our room had a private bathroom, shower and private outdoor space with chairs. The room at the time also had coffee and tea supplies in the room which was great in the morning. I had the vegetarian meal (no meat, no fish) and my partner had no restrictions. We both enjoyed our meals immensely. My dinner was one of favorite meals in Japan. The family is so sweet and welcoming. It’s been awhile since I felt that relaxed and at peace. Highly recommend this stay for the Kumano Kodo!

Best place to stay on the Kumano
We were so grateful to have the opportunity to stay at Keyaki. The hospitality was warm and welcoming, the food was sublime as well as gourmet, the beds comfortable (and air conditioned!) and the view spectacular. What else could you ask for, especially after hiking uphill most of the way. We could not have been happier.

An absolute highlight - spacious & stylish room with an amazing view, comfortable futon bed & i loved the little corner where we could make our own filter coffee. Mahito san was very warm & the food was DELICIOUS! Both supper & breakfast. Also glad to have met Chaka the pony. Location is also near the start of the next part of the kumano kodo hike. We very much enjoyed our stay at Keyaki. The view was magnificent and the food that Mahito-san prepared was delicious, a very good introduction to Japanese food for Western palates. (However, we suspect he didn’t prepare the bento, as it was a bit of a letdown. We’d advise looking for other options, rather than getting the bento.)

The most fantastic and exceptional stay ever! It was the highlight of our Kimono Kodo experience without a doubt!
This was without a doubt the best accommodation and food experience we had during our Kumano Kodo journey if not for all of our three week journey across Japan. The views from our rooms and dining area of the mountains were breathtaking, the facilities modern yet Classical Japanese and very stylish at the same time, the food and presentation by the owner outstanding, particularly given he is a trained chef, and the welcome by the owner incredibly warm and inviting. We were made to few so special and spoiled! Absolutely loved everything about this place and experience. Thank you!!!

Hidden gem with a wonderful host (and his family)!
This is my BEST accommodation throughout the entire trek. It has a beautiful, spacious room that is thoughtfully prepared by the host. The views are AMAZING and unparallel, as you are on a higher elevation. Your room also opens up to the backyard for fresh air, where you can sit to enjoy the breeze and view. The meals prepared by the host was absolutely delicious, especially after a day of hiking. The advantage of this place is also that you would have started an uphill segment of the next day's trekking itinerary, so that you have less uphill to complete the next day. Strongly recommend this accommodation! To be candid, it was not my first choice but I am so glad that we ended up here!

A treasure along Kumano Kodo
It was a perfect stay ! The house is located along the Kumano Kodo trail... very convenient, except for the steep climb up, especially a day of tiring walk ! However, what welcomed us was the beautiful view from the house, especially from our room ! The sunset view of the mountains was excellent ! Facilities in the room was perfect, so thoughtful.. from the coffee making counter with its own tap & sink, to the wc, to the wash basin and the bathroom. What we love most was the raised tatami platform on which the futons were placed.. Especially comfortable as futon were placed on top of a cushion mattress that's a few inches thick. Best sleep ever ! The host, Mahito-san made the best and pretty kaiseki dinner ! Even the western breakfast was served in a bento box with perfect toast ! He should be awarded michelin stars ! The house had 3 young children, but they were so well behaved that we didn''t even know of their existence until the 2 5yr old appeared during dinner and was introduced to us. She was so cute ! Overall, a perfect stay. Nothing else we could have asked for !

A warm, welcoming family home
We were greeted by the very kind and hospitable owner (Mahito) after a cold and rainy start to our hike. We were guided through the warm house to our rooms and were stunned by the view of the valley. After a well-needed shower, we sat down for dinner. So much time and and care was put into the meal. It was one of the best meals of our entire Japan trip. The atmosphere was so disarming. We could have fallen asleep at the table. The soft pitter patter of children's feet really reminded you that you were a guest in this lovely home at this ephemeral moment in time.

Nestled on the side of the hill with stunning views across the valley, Keyaki was the most charming of the places we stayed on our five-day walk. A magical start to our Kumano Kodo trip!
We had a wonderful stay at Keyaki! After a strenuous hike UP to Takahara, we were rewarded with a warm welcome, a beautiful tatami room with the most incredible views across the mountains and town below. The dinner that night was beautifully presented and delicious. We requested vegan meals in advance and compared to our 'normal diet' fellow guests we were just as lucky with yummy and filling meals! To top it all off in the morning we got to meet the resident lawnmower (as our host described!), a beautiful pony called Chakka, and a rare treat of cloud inversion across the valley below. We loved our stay here and highly recommend staying at this wonderful minshuku.

It was very nice to be able to watch the sunset whilst drinking tea after the first day of walking. The meals were absolutely delicious and generous (especially the dinner!). We will always remember our stay in Keyaki and wish we were able to spend more time there!

Keyaki
This was the most wonderful accommodation my wife and I have ever stayed in. The room, the view, the food, all of it was amazing. The hosts, their family, beautiful children, a cool pony. What an awesome family. They live a very special life, and they provided us with memories we will cherish forever!

Keyaki guesthouse
We loved everything about this place: our host Mahito was most gracious and welcoming, the accommodation was clean comfortable and well appointed. Lots of thoughtful touches, like fresh ground coffee in each room. Beautiful peaceful views sitting on the decks outside our rooms. Meals were fantastic! Would have loved to stay here for a few days!

A beautiful stay
We adored Keyaki and are so glad we stopped in Takahara for a night. Our host was very welcoming and so kind. We loved the meals (especially dinner) and the views at sunset and in the morning. Our room, with an ensuite and bath, was very spacious, clean and comfortable. We appreciated the small extras, like the ability to make coffee in our room. The pony even made an appearance at breakfast! We would have loved to stay longer and would recommend to everyone.

Everything was fantastic. We received excellent on the spot advice so we could realistically complete what we could in the short time we had. We arrived early (1.30pm) to our accommodation as we couldn't find any lunch. Our hosts looked after us and made lunch for us. We then checked in an hour earlier than anticipated, which was wonderfully generous of our hosts. Thank you.

Perfect stay in Keyaki Guesthouse
The owner is a very good host and cook. We had a delicious diner in the evening. The room is exceptionally beautiful and is very quiet. The private terrace has a breathtaking view over the valley. The guesthouse is located on the Kumano Kodo trail, so it could not be better.

Magnificent mountain View
Friendly host. Tasty dinner and breakfast meals. Big and clean Japanese-style room with en-suite toilet and magnificent mountain view in the day and cloud view early in the morning. The accommodation was right next to the hiking route towards Chikatsuyu, which was where I was heading the next day. Lovely stay!

Very nice host and questhouse, with great views and fantastic dinner cooked by host
This is a gem of a guesthouse. Great views as it's located high above the village. House is clean and welcoming and it's such a pleasure to just sit on the patio with a drink and admire the view and the host's pony. Our host was Mahito-san and he is a great chef. The dinner we had here was better than the ones we had at restaurants !! My only small wish is that the guesthouse could check their guest dietary preferences as my wife was served beef as one of the items, which she doesn't eat. We also ordered the lunch box for our hike to Chikatsuyu and I believe this was cooked and delivered by a third party, and frankly the quality was not good and was all vegetarian. If you are hiking to Chikatsuyu, there is a rest stop at about 80% of the trail, where you can get the more or less the same simple vegetarian stuff.

A stellar stay!
We can not say enough good things about the Keyaki. This small (2 rooms) guest house is perched on the far end of Takahara with amazing views across the valley to the mountains beyond. We were greeted warmly by the host and shown to two beautiful and comfortable rooms. The food (including the bento box lunch for our next day hike) was wonderful. We simply can not say enough good things about the Keyaki.

Lovely room, views and host!
We had a fabulous stay. Wish we could stayed one more night. Everything was perfect! The host was lovely, we can feel the care through the attention to details (from travel adaptor, maps, coffee beans for drip coffee provided in room), a warmer in the shoe cabinet which dried our shoes wet from the rain.. The view from the room was fantastic. Meals were delicious! Such a memorable stay.

Best stop along Kumano Kodo
Although this is probably the first stop for many of us, it's probably one of the best you'd get! The location, the room, the view, the owner, the food and the lovely pony, EVERYTHING is just fantastic! I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say that the food especially is worthy of a Michelin star! It's super duper delicious, and meticulously prepared by the awesome owner! The views from the room is absolutely beautiful and sitting outside viewing the sky and beautiful scenery after walking the Kumano Kodo is so so relaxing! Highly recommended!

Keyaki with a View
Keyaki was difficult to find but once we arrived it was bliss. Beautiful family, beautiful room (with drip filter coffee pot), beautiful views and immediately alongside Kumano Kodo walking route. Keyaki was very peaceful. Only two guest rooms available so not party central which we appreciated. I would definitely recommend Keyaki.

Ideal place to stay in Takahara
This is the most idyllic place I have stayed in Japan! Beautiful mountain scenery could be seen from the private patio attached to my room, where I could quietly enjoy a cup of green tea while watching the sunset. My room with ensuite bathroom facilities was spacious and tastefully decorated. The fulsome and delicious dinner prepared by the host (mine was vegetarian) was also the best I have had on this trip! Watching the mountains while taking breakfast the next morning, with the host family’s adorable pony grazing right outside our dining area, was like being in a postcard. Despite being so far away from the busyness in the cities, the wi-fi in the house was excellent, so you have the best of both worlds!

Very friendly and comfortable
The welcome was great and the service provided was a great start to my Kumano Kodo walk. The food was all delicious and I appreciated the adjustments to meet my ‘no meat’ preference. I also considered this to be the most comfortable bed I slept on in my entire trip - the extra padding, while not completely traditional, was super comfortable.

Keyaki is just great. I wished there were an option to give more stars than 5. Delicious food. Nice clean room and bath. Great relaxing view from the balcony outside the room. And delicious locally roasted coffee beans in your room to grind and brew yourself and enjoy the early morning view. The owner was beyond nice and helpful to make sure we had a great stay. I can’t recommend Keyaki highly enough.

Very special - Keyaki
I had a wonderful night stay at Keyaki. I was very well cared for by the lovely owners and enjoyed meeting their children. The meals that were provided were sensational. I had every comfort in the room. In the morning, I woke to the most amazng mist in the valley. It was all an experience I will never forget.
