Lovely warm homestay
People I engaged with during the homestay were welcoming, warm and extremely helpful. The first night I actually ended up staying at a different homestay as no one else was booked at Chikatsuyu, but in exchange I was driven to my starting place for the kumono kodo hike the next day - so I actually ended up saving time. It also meant I was able to eat dinner with other travellers rather than alone. The Chikatsuyu base itself is in a lovely location, a small town in a valley with lots of kaki trees, and very near a bus stop. The rooms were warm, the meals filling, the air is as fresh as you might expect. They also kindly drove me to the train station on the day I left, which saved me a long bus trip! Lunchboxes are available even if you can't book them through the Kumano Travel site - they will ask you each night if you want a lunchbox the next day, cash payment. The costs is about what you'd expect for any kumono kodo homestay - a little pricey compared to other parts of Japan, but worth it for the whole experience. The baths I wasn't sure how to rate - there is no onsen (as per the home description), or bath tub that travellers can use, but the shower works fine :) Wifi worked fine (and was necessary to access a translation app to be able to communicate haha)

Food was very homely with good host. However pics were not representative of the actual room. Shared place with minimal sound partitions.

Nice accommodation
The elderly couple who run the place is very kind and receptive to guests. While their accommodation is not hotel standard, it makes you feel at home and warm. And that’s all you need after a tiring hike :)

Owner moved me and 2 others to Hagi for his convenience…so we required him to shuttle us back to Chilatsuyu to continue walk…he was very friendly and helpful but still not ideal.

Warm and Welcoming Stay After a Great Day on the Trail
We stayed here after our first segment of the Kumano Kodo and absolutely loved it. The place felt very cozy and homely. The older lady who welcomed us was so kind and cooked a delicious meal — it truly felt like staying with your grandma. A perfect place to rest and recharge after a long day of hiking!

Great stay with a very friendly and innovative hostess
Even though our hostess didn’t speak English and we could barely say sorry or thank you in Japanese, we had a great time together and communicated with ease thanks to our hostess being tech savvy. The house was cozy in the midst of a small village which gave it a laidback vibe and begged to be explored. That afternoon was quite nice, relaxed and invited us to ponder about things that went through our heads that day.

My heart goes out to the grandma who is just trying her bestest to cook for us and to keep the place clean. The place just didn’t meet my own high expectation, but it did provide me with the basics - a room, a bed, a shower and a toilet, and food.
Best: sweet grandma
Worse: my expectations are too high :)

Basic but comfortable.
Warm welcome and home cooked meals, plus a bento box for the next day. Accomodation is adequate, if a little cramped. One shared bathroom. Walls are very thin. Beds were confortable, but insects can get inside the house which might be a problem in summer, but we survived OK.

Knowing the Japanese Culture
It was a great Japanese experience; since we arrived it was a nice welcoming. Naoki our host gave us the indications and rules about the dinner and breakfast time and showed us to our nice, clean and warm Japanese Style room.
He was very nice and tried to speak to us in Spanish (our native language) what made it nicer. He spoiled the other guests and us with a wide variety of delicious dishes that he prepared for us as dinner and talking to the other hikers made the dinner very pleasant.

Relatively expensive
For a solo traveler, this guesthouse is quite expensive compared to the other guesthouses along the Kumano; it did not offer much to justify the cost of the stay. The location is a short walk from the trail; the room is quite okay, but the floors creak so much; and the baths are clean. We had barbecue for dinner, which is a nice experience; a plated breakfast with coffee; and I also opted to get the packed lunch, which was helpful as there are no rest areas where you can buy food along the way. But it needs to improve on the quality and the quantity of the food provided. Ryu, our host, was nice and interacted with the guests; he is accommodating as he refilled my water bottle.

Warm and cozy house
Big thanks for pick us up at the rest area at that night! The owner gave us warm welcome and very helpful. He prepare BBQ for dinner which is super good! Overall the house is clear and well maintained. I can't ask more for the stay.
My only suggest is if there is a shelf/storage trolley for clear cloth in bath room will be great.

Amazing cook
One of the best meals during my travel in Kumano Kodo! Plenty of salad and fruit was served. Locally grown vegetables looked fantastic. Awesome breakfast included buttery croissant, yogurt w/granola, and mushroom soup with local flavors. The hostess was made a special cafe au lait which was a treat. What the place may lack in terms of modern facilities, it made up for it with wam hospitality and a great food.

We really enjoyed our stay in this place. Our host was very friendly and gave us advices to find a good onsen. She spoke English very well. She cooked us a delicious dinner and breakfast with local products. Our room was comfortable and the house was peaceful and well decorated. We highly recommend a stay in Kumano Kodo Inn Chikatsuyu BASE

The beds were comfy. The bath was hot. And the food was abundant and delicious. Probably the best lunch on the entire trip! It is a light walk up the hill from town but it was lovely to be in the countryside and not on the main road. Maybe only a 4 minute walk

Not impressed
This accommodation wasn't impressive at all. I couldn't even find it based on the map given. Better directions would be helpful. I wasn't even greeted when I arrived. There was a note on the door to check myself in. Luckily there was another traveler who filled me in on some things because she arrived earlier. It was only about a 12 minute walk from the trail but impossible to find. The room was fine... the window was left open. I guess lessons learned. Check the windows. I was freezing all night. I wanted to take a warm shower in the am but no hot water. The women never spoke to me, checked in on me, or let me know about no showers in the morning. I guess the language barrier was part of the problem but she really didn't try. The food was ok but I had exceptional food at the other accommodations. The lunch box wasn't great either.

Great guesthouse, fantastic food
Its a little off the main road, but close to the start if you're staying overnight for Kumano Kodo. It was my first taste of more homestyle Japanese food and it was honestly incredible. Filling, flavorful and healthy. Very kind and gracious host as well.

Off the main road, about 400m. We had a bit of difficulty locating the place. The accommodation was cold but our room was nice and warm thanks to the AC and the heater was on in the morning for breakfast. We arrived around 5pm, dinner was at 6 and we had to hop in a car about 5.40, to go to the dinner venue. Food was excellent and there was an opportunity for second servings. Breakfast (main - warm soup) and our bento box (plenty of variety) were also very good. Host did all she could to make us feel welcome. Over all, good value for money.
