Lovely warm homestay

People I engaged with during the homestay were welcoming, warm and extremely helpful. The first night I actually ended up staying at a different homestay as no one else was booked at Chikatsuyu, but in exchange I was driven to my starting place for the kumono kodo hike the next day - so I actually ended up saving time. It also meant I was able to eat dinner with other travellers rather than alone. The Chikatsuyu base itself is in a lovely location, a small town in a valley with lots of kaki trees, and very near a bus stop. The rooms were warm, the meals filling, the air is as fresh as you might expect. They also kindly drove me to the train station on the day I left, which saved me a long bus trip! Lunchboxes are available even if you can't book them through the Kumano Travel site - they will ask you each night if you want a lunchbox the next day, cash payment. The costs is about what you'd expect for any kumono kodo homestay - a little pricey compared to other parts of Japan, but worth it for the whole experience. The baths I wasn't sure how to rate - there is no onsen (as per the home description), or bath tub that travellers can use, but the shower works fine :) Wifi worked fine (and was necessary to access a translation app to be able to communicate haha)

Shared place

Food was very homely with good host. However pics were not representative of the actual room. Shared place with minimal sound partitions.

Nice accommodation

The elderly couple who run the place is very kind and receptive to guests. While their accommodation is not hotel standard, it makes you feel at home and warm. And that’s all you need after a tiring hike :)

Moved location

Owner moved me and 2 others to Hagi for his convenience…so we required him to shuttle us back to Chilatsuyu to continue walk…he was very friendly and helpful but still not ideal.

Small lodging w paper walls

Traditional house w paper walls. The hostess does not speak english (but use translator) but she got SOO happy when she could talk with me and when the others tried to speak japansede :). Dinner and breakfast and her hospitality was great!

Warm and Welcoming Stay After a Great Day on the Trail

We stayed here after our first segment of the Kumano Kodo and absolutely loved it. The place felt very cozy and homely. The older lady who welcomed us was so kind and cooked a delicious meal — it truly felt like staying with your grandma. A perfect place to rest and recharge after a long day of hiking!

Great stay with a very friendly and innovative hostess

Even though our hostess didn’t speak English and we could barely say sorry or thank you in Japanese, we had a great time together and communicated with ease thanks to our hostess being tech savvy. The house was cozy in the midst of a small village which gave it a laidback vibe and begged to be explored. That afternoon was quite nice, relaxed and invited us to ponder about things that went through our heads that day.

We actually were transferred to Guesthouse Hagi by the owner as Chikartsuyu Base was unoccupied our night.

My heart goes out to the grandma who is just trying her bestest to cook for us and to keep the place clean. The place just didn’t meet my own high expectation, but it did provide me with the basics - a room, a bed, a shower and a toilet, and food. Best: sweet grandma Worse: my expectations are too high :)
