Great service, food, and numerous private outside onsens

Only time we stayed in a hotel and it was fun! Nice room, meals were very good and service top notch. Their 4 private onsens were wonderful, large and beautiful with great landscaping! The area had a good washer/dryer combination machine that was easy to use and much needed.

Grateful for the pick up shuttle! I wished they had a drop off though but the walk to the bus stop wasn’t far and still doable (just trying to minimise unnecessary walking cos like, I’m already gna hike yknow) Room was clean, big and spacious (tatami floor cos we stayed in a Japanese style room). Please use the private bath if you’ve got the chance - it’s just a delight! Food was good for the type of place we were staying in but I did expect it to be slightly better. Sorry, expectations are a bit high :)

Everything perfect!

A great hotel with beautiful private Rotenburo! Very friendly staff! The shop has nice Omiyage. I bought some small pouches. The meals were amazing! It was convenient to have a washing machine near the Onsen.

Very comfortable for Onsen stay

Very elegant dinner and wonderful private Onsen and public Onsen. Because I had to take the early bus, the staff kindly prepared for me a breakfast bento. The location is fine by bus but not much besides the spa.

Out of this world experience, would highly recommend

We had never had an onsen before and were very lucky to be able to experience a private open air onsen in this hotel. The staff were incredibly kind and the dinner was one of the best meals we'd ever had. We loved wearing the yakuta and this was a once in a lifetime experience.

Amazing Place to Stay

Very was at the top level. Facility, service, and location. The public bath, in my opinion, was the best out of the three onsen villages in this area (I have stayed in all). There were 4 private onsen spots available for people who find it awkward to use the public baths. Of note, the meals were just fantastic and were like 7 course meals! Rooms show what Ryokan can offer: very nice, clean and has everything that a guest needs. I was there after Kumano Kodo hike, and there were dehumidifiers in the room for drying. Attention to details! Highly recommended!

Yamayuri a disappointment

This hotel was chosen by Kumano Travel for us. It was the most expensive hotel we've ever stayed in and one of the least enjoyable. No staff spoke English, if you want a shower after walking 7 hours you must walk 50m down the street in yakata in 1° temperature. Room was basic, futon the worst of the trip and the hotel felt old and tired. There was no explanation and no choice that dinner was a full on kisecki feast...the last thing we wanted after a hard walk. Awkward and embarrassing as no one explained what went with what or what to expect. Breakfast was similar. A waste of considerable money for us and not recommended after a full days walk.

Great option when hiking kumano kodo trail or as a sole destination

Onsens were superb. Service excellent. Rooms clean and spacious. No foreigners when we stayed. If you cycle make sure to ask for the free bicycle rental (there are 3 of them). Riding into Hongu to see the shrine and the giant torii gate of Oyu no Hara was a fairly easy ride. Caters to vegetarians very well and ate vegan too.

Excellent Shuttle Bus Service

The hotel provide booking in advance shuttle bus travel to and from Hotel -> Hongu Taisha -> Fushiogami-oji -> Mizunomi-oji -> Hosshinmon-oji -> Mikoshi-toge. The staffs also help suggest the route that best suit your need around Hongu Taisha Area. Also, the shuttle bus driver is very polite and care for the guest. The hotel is equiped with a nice outdoor Onsen that is worthwhile to visit. I had a wonderful stay in the hotel.

favorite onsen (Google translate helpful)

Watarase was my favorite outdoor onsen! Room and facilities were nice. One desk clerk spoke English and was very helpful and kind. Checking in took a while because nothing was in English and I needed explanations for how to use the hot water dispenser, heater, lights etc in my room and next door onsen. I appreciated the shuttle service available which I learned about online before I got there. The restaurant at the Onsen next door was all in Japanese with no pictures of food available. Google translate was helpful.

Beautiful Hot Springs

Stayed in the Japanese-style room which was basic but adequate. Staff was friendly and helpful. The meal was very comprehensive, and our waiter was kind enough to give us instructions for how to eat everything. The hot springs were the whole reason for going, and they did not disappoint.

Amazing Ryokan

This ryokan was a great place to stay, in a fabulous location. The staff were friendly and welcoming, the onsen (both private and public) were great and our kaiseki dinner and morning breakfast were delicious. The hotel is in a beautiful spot, conveniently located next to a bus stop where you can catch the bus back to Tanabe (or to Hongu) with no hassle at all. A minor criticism would be that the information we received stated that check-in was strictly no later than 5pm (for a 6pm dinner). In order to meet this deadline we had to cut short our experience of the (amazing) Spring festival in Hongu but when we arrived at the hotel we found that we were able to choose what time we'd like to eat, meaning that it might not have been the end of the world if we'd checked in at say 6pm rather than 5pm. Again, this is the most minor of criticisms. When everything else is so perfect it's hard to think of ways that the experience could be improved. All in all, A+. Bravo!

Very nice hot springs

The staff was very welcoming and helping. Both public and private rotenburo are really amazing and beautiful. The only week point: because it was under the roof, the room was a bit hot when I arrived. Maybe, air conditioned should be turned on before the arrival of the guests.

An excellent onsen hotel

We stayed here for two nights and were received with a great deal of care and thoughtfulness. The meals were excellent and clearly prepared with a lot of love as well as culinary expertise, and our waitress, Miho, spoke excellent English and was very gracious in her role. The location of the hotel next to the river and its extensive baths are certainly there to be enjoyed. And above all the warmth and kindness of the manager, Katsumi Motooka, who welcomed us and cared for our needs beyond the call of duty. I would unreservedly recommend the Hotel Yamayuri to international visitors and pilgrims.
