We had an amazing time hiking the Kumano Kodo and staying at the guesthouses along the way! The daily treks felt hassle-free and allowed us to fully enjoy the experience without worrying about logistics. Whenever we had questions before and during the trip, their team was consistently responsive, helpful, and reassuring. What made the five days truly special were the experiences themselves. The long walks, unexpected rain, quiet shrines, steep climbs, and rewarding downhills all came together to create memories that will stay with us for a very long time. It was physically challenging at times, but in the best possible way. Every day felt different, and each stretch of the trail had its own character and story. All the guides we encountered were incredibly helpful, pleasant, and clearly well-prepared. You could immediately feel that they genuinely cared about making the journey meaningful and comfortable for travelers. Going through the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage was nothing short of memorable, and I highly recommend experiencing it through the services of the Kumano Kodo Community Reservation System. It made the entire adventure smooth, immersive, and deeply rewarding. While the intermediate itinerary was light on the miles, it was really nice to have extra time to take lots of breaks for treats on the trail like coffee, fresh orange juice, matcha ice cream, take long lunch breaks, explore the towns we were staying in and go to the onsens. This trek was the coolest thing we did in Japan, a truly beautiful cultural experience with incredible food and beautiful views. The trail was fairly easy to follow, we did use Google Maps to find our way occasionally. Overall this itinerary was incredible and I would recommend to anyone looking for something more focused on an enjoyable experience versus a physically challenging trek. Only thing that was a disappointment was the traditional boat tour sold out very very early on and we were not able to book in time (we booked in December for a May start date) so if you’re trying to do the boat tour book as soon as possible. The booking process seemed a bit over-complicated, but they've since updated they website and I think it's smoother now. The boat wasn't available, but there were reasonable alternatives. There's ample time allocated to the walking, so I never felt like I had to rush anywhere. The trek was tranquil and quiet, and I got to meet like-minded hikers during the 5-day sojourn. My trip had coincided with the Kumano Hongu Taisha Spring Festival, but unfortunately due to bad weather, the actual procession took place on 16th Apr instead of 15th, which meant that I had to miss out or mess up the itinerary. In hindsight, I wish that I had went for the festival instead as it would have been quite an experience! Overall, the kumano kodo trek was a very positive experience, the only challenges were the limited accommodations, the kumanogawa boat ride availability and luggage forwarding services.
