Perfectly arranged

Although the reservation confirmation took a while, we were impressed with the seamless arrangements. Even when some of the accomodation that we initially wanted were unavailable, there were immediate alternatives provided, which were extremely satisfactory. The luggage service was also seamless and flexible.

Perlmutter December 2025 Trip

We appreciated the great detail and efficiency of all the arrangements. It was especially helpful that our request for early luggage pick-up in Tanabe was graciously accommodated. All of the travel connections were smooth and we enjoyed all the places we stayed. We would recommend this service highly to other travelers. Thank you so much for working with us and answering all of our questions.

Outstanding and Amazing Experience

The entire experience was truly wonderful. The Trails were very well marked, the accommodations were friendly and helpful and the luggage transfer service was great. My recommendation for future travelers is to study the trail description well to make sure it aligns with your fitness level. We consider ourselves fairly fit and yet found some areas to be challenging. The weather and the beauty of the trail definitely helped ease the harder parts. The fall colors during our hike was breathtaking!. Anyone planning to do this should book early to find the most convenient accommodations. Late fall weather is an exceptional time!

The highlight of our time in Japan

We really enjoyed our time walking the Kumano Kodo, & this particular itinerary suited our wants almost exactly. Plenty of walking at the start, coupled with plenty of time to relax at the Onsen at the end. The distances in kilometres of most of the stretches seem quite short but in practice the end up being about right for a morning's walking due to the steep inclines etc. It's not a walk to be rushed either really, it's nice to be able to take your time with it, especially when visiting places like Hongu & Yunomine.

All the way from Kentucky

Besides arranging our itinerary on-line, Shu met with us in person at the information center in Tanabe the day before we started. His assistance with details, such as bus schedules, was invaluable. We met the most amazing people along the way. Our host, Mr. Kubo, was so kind and welcoming on our first night. Our next host played guitar with one of our pilgrims as we sang along with American hits from the 70s. The dinner at Yenomine Onsen was so memorably displayed and deliciously vegetarian. And at our last stay at Hotel Charmant, we just happened to land on an evening that the town was having a spectacular fireworks display. The Kumono Kodo trail was magical for us.

Need to improve customer and find better lodgings at more reasonable rates.

Complaints are ignored. First lodging was terrible and the rate charged was outrageous. The estimated walking time are vastly exaggerated. There are better more affordable lodgings in the area that are not offered (e.g., Taoya at Kii-Katsuura). The portal is not customer friendly and is not operational 24 hours/7 days. After canceling the last hotel, Kumano Travel refused to arrange baggage transfer.

Good mix of moderately challenging hiking and Kumano Kodo highlights

Challenging hiking from Takijiri to Takahara and Takahara to Chikatsuyu ( even for us fit, experienced hikers who live at higher altitude). Beautiful hike through the woods with occasional vista views. Although there were many hikers, the trail did not seem crowded and we often had the trail to ourselves. Very impressed with how non-touristy our accommodations were.

An unforgettable and spiritual journey!

To preface, my girlfriend and I have been planning a trip to Japan for about 5 years. Upon discovering more of the countries nature and history, we learned about the Kumano Kodo, and knew immediately we had to do it. What followed was a grand adventure unlike anything we have ever experienced, full of amazing food, kind hearted locals, and an incredibly fulfilling and spiritual experience. The website, maps, and guides were all incredible helpful. I was especially overjoyed by the audio guide, which was like having an English translator and Kumano Kodo guide right along on the journey with you that you could listen to at your own pace. It was so exciting to find new ojis along the route, and then listen to the associated history and mythology. The only challenging thing with booking was that the website is only open during Japanese hours, so if you live on the other side of the world, you have to stay up late/ wake up early to book accommodations, guides, etc. However, that is to be expected. Now, this is not an relaxing, easy jaunt through a park, but a beautiful, wild trail that leads you over rivers, through forests, and over mountains, although it always felt safe, it is still a trek to be taken seriously, and treated with respect. Although the trip can easily be customized to your liking to accommodate buses, etc, the Kumano Sanzan, in my opinion, is so much more beautiful when you earn the destination with your own two legs, just like the emperors, samurai, and even peasants used to do. Overall, if you are looking for a humbling, relaxing, and at times challenging adventure into the true heart and spirit of Japan, look no further than the Kumano Kodo with Kumano Travel! From Anthony and Leanne, thank you so much for such a cherished adventure.

We had a great time!

Once you've gotten through the somewhat complicated booking process in the booking system, everything runs smoothly. Everything was super well organized: the luggage transport worked wonderfully smoothly, the information about buses, the time needed for hiking, etc. – everything worked out great! It really is a wonderfully easy way to travel on the pilgrimage route, especially when you have children with you! Our hosts at the accommodations were all super friendly, the trails are well signposted, the Kumano Kodo is simply beautiful. We can only recommend this way of traveling!

Great trip for body and soul

Doing the KUMANO KODO trail is on the top of the list of things I have completed. It was nourishing for both body and soul. It is so beautiful out there and the beauty is reflected in the people too. The trail is easy to follow although it is defined as moderate and I think it is on the easy side- for some background context, I’m 49, not super fit though I do Vinyasa Yoga every day. The boat ride on this trail was cancelled due to rain, but I received a phone call at my hotel and an email to inform me of this, and refunded on the spot. The food I had at some of these accommodations was just so yummy and invested. Above all, walking alone, sometimes for hours without meeting a soul, in stunning forests, full of colours and shapes was so rewarding- slowly but surly you let go of the everyday thoughts and worries, until you don’t think at all. The Kumano KODO is a wonderful reset for the soul.

It was not so easy to book, because the webside do have open times (japan time) and this is not easy to handle from Europe. Also the webside needs a fresh up, so you can find easier the tour you like to do. But if you go threw this, it is wonderfull. :)

Worth it for anyone to experience!

The hike requires a moderate amount of fitness, but it is not technically difficult and is very smooth going for most parts. It will only be tough if you deviate from the pre-assigned trails - did the Akagi-goe trail on day 3 instead and it was a lot more technically difficult with a much more immediate (and higher) elevation gain. Nevertheless, this was truly an experience and I will recommend anyone to sign up for it too :)

Great hike; poor website

The Kumano Kodo pilgrimage hike was the highlight of our month long trip to Japan. Every day was magical, meaningful, and beautiful. We used the itinerary as outlined but added additional walking which was ideal. We highly recommend the trek to anyone who is considering it. However we found using the Kumano Travel website to be slow and cumbersome. As New Yorkers we were particularly handicapped by being restricted to only Japan hours to make reservations. The site is not user friendly but does provide a wealth of information. We found so much in Japan to work incredibly well; we were surprised to find the Kumano Travel website just didn't.

Fabulous Hike - But Didn't Need 5 Days

This was a really wonderful experience all around -- the hiking is challenging but very worthwhile and I very much enjoyed the home stays and guest houses. I'm by no means a dedicated hiker, but this walk could have been done in less time. If you stay over the night before in Tanabe and take an early bus to Tajikiri from Tanabe, you can certainly get to Chikasuyu in one day, and then to Hongu the next. We filled the days with extra hikes so all's well that end's well, but if I had known in advance how do-able the route was, I probably would have added extra full hiking days. In other words, don't let the difficulty ratings scare you!

kumano travel services

I decided to use the Kumano travel as it is a local agency which i assume supports the local service providers (accomodation, courrier services etc ..). Basically i was very satisfied with the correspondence and prompt responses to my queries. If I an suggest an improvement is advice on how to plan the pilgrimage plan. I used a 5D4N schedule but was dissapointed as it suggested that I catch the bus on the last day which i find quite distresing as my aim was to walk the kumano kdo and not travel by bus. Anyway i think because it was a slow season and not many accomodations were available but nevertherless I managed to walked it and avoid using the bus. I think there should be options rather than leaving it to the walkers to find alternative route.

Everything were super smooth and went as booked. I wish there's alternative route suggestions for tourists who weren't able to book the boat tour. We figured it ourselves but it would be great if the info was given. Overall really enjoyed all the accommodations and services. Highly recommend.

Excellent Travel Experience

I cannot say enough good things about Kumano Travel and our trip. EVERYTHING was incredibly well coordinated. The accommodations and food were fantastic! The guest house owners were hospitable and friendly and could speak English (very helpful for us). The guest house experience with home cooked meals was a taste of traditional culture that is often lacking in a tourist experience. The luggage service was seamless--the suitcases were always waiting for us at the accommodations! Having a guide at the beginning of the trip was incredibly helpful in getting oriented to the Kumano Kodo experience. Although it is a rugged and mountainous area, the trails and oji-shrines are well maintained. The boat trip down the river was definitely a highlight and gave us a different perspective compared to walking through the forest. I would highly recommend Kumano Travel--they are very helpful and responsive. It was a wonderful experience.

The organisation behind the trek was great . Great places to stay and general info . What was regrettable was application process . This was involved and required me to be up at 5am to fill out forms whilst website was live . Where today do you need to fill in forms acc to Japanese time . Couldn’t understand it . Shame

Great experience with Kumano travel.

Booking through Kumano Travel was relatively easy, and the information they gave us to follow was clear and understandable. Suggest careful review of Minshuku options before booking. Two of the places we selected were really bare bones (other than the food, which was plentiful everywhere).

I would give it 5 stars if it had rained less (1 day we had to take the bus because it was raining hard all day), if we had enjoyed the accommodation near Yunomine Onsen more, and if we had been able to take the boat ride on the Kumano-Gawa river, but that was booked out already 2 months in advance.

Incredible introduction to the Kumano Kono pilgrimage

We did not know what to expect and were thrilled with our experience along the Kumano Kodo trail. From the hiking to the hospitality, the whole experience exceeded our expectations. We found that the three days of hiking was enough as beginners to give us an idea of what the whole pilgrimage would have been like, whilst taking our competence level into consideration. We loved all of the guesthouses we stayed in and were made to feel very welcome by the staff. We were very appreciative of their generosity and kindness.

Great experience even for a first time visitor to Japan

Did the Kumano Kodo as a solo traveller who visited Japan for the first time and doesn’t speak Japanese well. The experience overal was amazing. Very kind people on the way and what a lovely hike to walk. I was a bit shame it ended with an average hotel away from the kumano kodo but that did not salted the overal experience. Thank you for providing this offer.

Great itinerary that allows enjoyable walks within Kumano Kodo and visits to all 3 shrines

Wonderful itinerary that progressively gets easier after the first day. You get the opportunity to hit all 3 shrines with this itinerary as well - all worth visiting! Days 4 and 5 are more 'touristy' where you are exploring the town more than you are spending walking within the forest. There is the opportunity to adjust the itinerary yourself once you figure out bus schedules too.

Best trip ever

First of all, we are so grateful to Michael Rhodes for all of his sharing of expertise at the main Kumano office. Upon arrival, he quickly set up our itinerary with some last-minute changes due to our late arrival. We had a fabulous time hiking, even though it was hot in the summertime. Michael gave us detailed tips that helped us along the way. This is a spiritual journey, unlike any other we’ve been, and I highly recommend it to anyone soulful and enlightened. All lodges were fantastic. The most fantastic aspect was the forest bathing, and the incredible temples. Memories for an entire lifetime.

I Wished I Spent More Days

I enjoyed the challenge of hiking in the forest mostly every day. The rain made it challenging, but it made the adventure more interesting. It was very different from the two Caminos I experienced and I loved it! The Summer weather was more humid. I like how the hikes are adjustable to different fitness level and time availability. The trek was one of the highlights of my first trip to Japan. This website helped a lot in organizing my Kumano Kodo experience. Thank you :)

We were really happy with our trek. The scenery was incredible, we felt very lucky to be out in nature enjoying all the sights and sounds. The trail was clearly marked and well maintained. It was easy to adapt our plans based on the weather, as there is good public transport and you can easily get on and off the trail in different locations. The boat trip was a highlight, even in the rain. The shrines at Hongu and Nachi in particular were very impressive.

Well organised intermediate walk on the Kumano Kodo. Luggage was dropped off daily before we arrived. Nice accomodations booked - quite like the Japanese rooms with futons. Try & get a private ensuite if available- well worth it. Walk was enjoyable, difficult in some sections. Buses easy to catch between towns when only walking some of the trail.

A spiritual wilderness trek unlike any other

We are blown away by the hospitality of our caretakers and the spiritual solemnity of the Kumano Kodo. My wife and I hiked, reflected, and rested each day. Yes, expect moments of physical and emotional struggle. The pristine solitude of the Kumano Kodo will make you think deeply and feel deeply. That's what makes it remarkable. For other travelers, I would recommend not hiking yourself to exhaustion so you can enjoy the day and evening. There will be other sites to see and experiences to enjoy.

Beautiful Nature Hike, with knowledgable guides

My guides were Ms Waka, Mr Yagi and Ms Kiyomi. They were English speaking guides. The hike was a peaceful walk that allowed me to enjoy the beautiful nature (tree, river, mountains and waterfall). Some steep slopes really challenged my stamina, but I am glad I made it! The guide's knowledge on the history and the religion really makes the Kumano Kodo hike much more meaningful for me, and that made a difference. I went to Kumano Kodo trek with the intention of spending time in nature, but I returned with so much appreciation for Shinto and Buddhism religion and the culture in Japan. The guides were patient with my questions and curiosity. Also, thank you for being such an amazing photographer, the pictures are great memories of my trip. I felt that my fitness level improved after 5 days of training at the Kumano Kodo, and more importantly, the mind felt a sense of renewal/ rebirth.

The walking is the best part

The initial forest walks are amazing. The peace and quiet while walking through an ancient landscape is such a change from travel in most of the rest of Japan. Although demanding, the rewards for the effort are evident in the views and the places you are able to visit.

Great itinerary and trip but required lots of self planning

Our overall itinerary, accommodations and experience were great and we would highly recommend. However, although we found the Kumano Travel site information very useful, their lack of communication regarding our requested itinerary and the miscommunication regarding the Kumano Travel presence at the Kii-Tanabe Info Center made the planning difficult and stressful. We were lucky to have a Japanese speaker in our travel group to be able to contact and book the accommodations directly in Japanese. Otherwise, I am not sure that we would have been able to complete our planning for this wonderful trip. The hiking, scenery, accommodations, and people we met during our hike were amazing and we definitely recommend the trip - just understand that you may need to take some initiative to handle your own plans.

Amazing experience

Amazing trip. Great fun trekking in the mountains (and collecting stamps along the way). The route I took was not too demanding and any reasonably healthy adult can handle. It’s also very well marked and this website has all the info one needs. Accommodation and luggage transfer booking through Kumano Travel was seamless and efficient. The best way to arrange a trip along Kumano Kodo. The only thing is I didn’t quite expect end of Sep to be so warm - mid day under the sun without shades was blazing hot. Early morning and evening was lovely though.

An outstanding pilgrim experience.

An outstanding experience. I was thrilled to be able to book directly with a local provider. The accommodation, meals and luggage transfers went without a hitch and were exactly as I had hoped they would be. My hosts were generous and so hospitable. The pilgrim boat ride down the river was a wonderful experience. I enjoyed the entire experience so much that the day after the boat ride (my last day) I caught an early morning taxi from Katsuura to Shingu and then two buses to Kogechi so I could walk the final 14m section to the Nachi-san waterfall.

Beautiful, fun way to experience Kumano Kodo

Although it’s a long way to get to the area, the kumano kodo trek was great! We had lots of fun Note that the difficulty levels presented are a bit underrating in regards of the inclines. I would also love for the opportunity to have baggage deliveries without booking all of our accommodations via kumano-travel. This was a bit challenging, with kumano travel not being a very convenient website for booking.

Kumano Travel made it Easy!

Kumano Travel provides an excellent service for discovering and booking an itinerary following the pilgrimage routes in Kumano Kodo. Their web site offers a wealth of helpful information and suggested itineraries that help to narrow down the many choices involved with exploring such a rich and diverse area. The staff was very helpful in answering queries by email, and especially with last minute issues on the ground at their office in Kii-Tanabe. And, without exception, all of the innkeepers were extremely gracious and helpful. As well, it was gratifiying to know that the entire service, and vendors (innkeepers), is community based and therefore maximizes keeping revenue in the community.

Beautiful trek suitable for recreational hikers

I did the trek in June. The weather was good with occasional drizzles. The trek was beautiful, peaceful, and accessible. The itinerary suggested by Kumano Travels was easy to follow. Fast walkers can consider slotting in more activities. I did a bicycle-ride around the costal area at Shingu after the suggested boat ride on the fourth day.

Interesting and worthwhile experience

Whole itinerary is well planned in conjunction with accommodation, travel timetables and hiking and sightseeing experiences. My only complaint is that pre-ordered meals do not allow guests to state their dietary restrictions. You are only allowed to choose between vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. So my wife was quite disappointed when she was served beef for dinner on 2 occasions as she doesn't eat beef. So be careful when ordering meals.

A perfect journey

I followed the recommended itinerary for this trip, which involves walking from Takijiri to Chikatsuyu and then taking a local bus to Hoshinmon-oji, from where the walk continues on to Hongu. The daily distances were very manageable for me even with the steep ascents and some descents. I only had one walking pole, which was enough for me. With good hiking boots, I didn't find the trail too slippery, although I did watch my steps very carefully. Some other pilgrims who chose to walk a longer distance to get to Hongu on day 3 reported that the walk was very tough in the rain, so I think I made the right choice to walk only the last 7km on that day! For those who have also completed the last 100km of the Camino de Santiago de Compostela in Spain, registration as a dual pilgrim in Hongu at the tourist information centre (behind the bus depot) was very efficient. In terms of sightseeing, Nachi was the absolute highlight for me!

Absolutely fantastic!

We had such a wonderful time for five days on the Kumano Kodo trail. Kumano Travel was wonderful. Everything was flawlessly organized. Each of the four places we stayed at were comfortable, friendly, spotlessly clean and provided some of the best meals we had in Japan. The luggage service was great. The trail itself is incredibly beautiful, very well maintained with excellent signage. The ability to hike at one's own pace was really good as well as the ability to hop on the bus if you didn't want to hike further that day. The staff at Kumano Travel were very helpful. We met lovely people along the trail and at night at the lodgings. The onset were so great after a day of hiking. The hiking is strenuous but very manageable. The shrines, especially the last one in Nachi, were beautiful. The whole thing was just a once in a lifetime experience.

The 5 day/4 night route was perfect. It was enough time to feel like we really experienced the Kumano Kodo while still being able to fit into a 3-week trip in Japan. (If we had more time in Japan, I would have added 1-2 additional days on the Kumano Kodo.) The first two days included some strenuous hiking, but the other days were easier. It was cool to do the riverboat ride on day 4. Overall, an incredibly beautiful and meaningful trek.

Perfect Itinerary, Esp. If Unsure You Can Hike the Whole Way

Everything about this website's information on this model itinerary was excellent - thorough, well thought out, accurate. The time estimates, difficulty estimate, elevation details, detailed maps with every single bathroom, water fountain, and historic site on it - all super helpful. For a planner like me, this took all the guesswork out. The service provided is incredible. I asked a question at the Kii Tanabe office about Dual Pilgrim and the woman there wasn't sure she gave me the full answer. Two days down the trail, I get an email detailing the answer and telling me to give my name at the Hongu office and they are expecting me and will help. I hadn't even mentioned my name at the the first office - she just looked me up in their reservation system and guessed who I was, correctly. Above and beyond!

Beautiful trek and great care

Unfortunately, I booked my Kumano Kodo trek at the start of my holiday in Japan and caught the flu on the flight over. Completed the first two days while sick but had to cancel the remainder. The Kumano Travel staff were helpful, and everyone from hosts to medical staff in Chikatsuyu were kind and hospitable. I intend to complete the Kumano Kodo in the future. Notes that may help future visitors: - I'm a 31 year old man, physically fit but not an avid hiker/walker/runner - Trekked alone but didn't feel unsafe at any point - Completed the first two treks within the estimated times despite having the flu - Temperature was mild, only needed a thermal zip-up sweater and this was unzipped for most of the walking

Fantastic Trip

My wife and I booked accommodation and meals for 4 nights during our trek and were thrilled all along the way. While the weather was not great, that obviously is out of anyone's control. Even with the mist, rain, and wind, we had a blast! The quaint villages and towns along the way, the beautiful mountain scenery, the stunning temples and historical sites... it was nothing short of spectacular. Add to that the amazing accommodations and meals we had along the way and it is easily one of my top 5 favorite trips of my life. Everyone was incredibly helpful and kind, always making sure we were doing ok. My favorite, however, was Minshuku Wadama in Yunomine Onsen. That was a truly unique experience and I would highly recommend it.

Kumano Kodo

We are a group of four (2 couples) following KUMANO Travel's model itinerary for a 5-day, self-guided Kumano Kodo trek ( Nakahechi, Takijiri to Hongu, Shingu & Nachi ) and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The itinerary can be fully booked on-line complete with accommodation, daily luggage transfer services, and meal options. We found the booking process relatively painless and the available options fully satisfied our needs. The area that one needs to pay attention is perhaps the train schedule, and more importantly, the local bus schedule that one has to follow closely in order to get from one stop to another, primarily because the buses runs strictly to their time tables, and missing one bus at a certain point might mean a disruption to subsequent itinerary for the rest of the day (or worst!) Otherwise I would testify that Kumano Travel's model itinerary offers a great opportunity for those who wish to experience the wonders of Kumano Kodo on their own without engaging a travel agent or doing a fully guided tour.

Amazing Journey

This 5 day trek was really amazing, thank you so much for the service you provide sharing these! Despite our first day in rough weather (3h uphill walking under the rain) the whole 5 days were truly amazing. Each day was quite different, with different kinds of paths and things to see, villages to discover, nice minshukus to visit etc. The details you provide for the trek are just perfect, and very easy to follow. We didn't have a single problem during our journey, and each day was even better than the previous one. The walking was perfect, never too hard, but still tiring enough that you're quite happy to settle down in a cute traditional japanese room in the afternoon. The Nachi falls were a great final area to visit, they were a good conclusion to the journey. Since we departed a bit later than planned the last day (to take advantage of the great onsens at Nakanoshima), our train ride back to Osaka was also amazing, as we watched the sun set over the changing ocean scenery. Our only regret is to not have done the full walk of Kumano Kodo instead, we would have gladly spent 1 or 2 more days visiting this region.

Beautiful walking

A most pleasant walk through (mostly) well developed forests on a well made trail. Plenty of information about the shrines and sights. Highly, highly recommend, but make sure you are walking fit so you can enjoy the experience.

Job well done by Kumano Travel

Bookings went smoothly without a hitch. We were affected by the typhoon for one day and had to cancel one night accommodations. Although it was the weekend and the staff were supposedly off-work, Kumano Travel arranged for alternate lodging for us.

Wonderful experience

I arranged a four day trip on the Kumano Kodo using Kumano Travel. I travelled to the area in October 2019. Although the website was initially a little confusing to master, all the arrangements were spot on. Documentation received was very good, lots of details and any questions or clarifications sought were responded to quickly and in great English, so very easy to understand. Information provided was very good, such as supplying bus timetables, and alternatives as weather washed out the Shingu proposed boat trip. I used the baggage transport option also which happened without efficiently and without incident. I would highly recommend visiting this area.

Good support system

Overall my group of 5 pilgrims were satisfied with the service provided by Kumano Travel. My only complaint was we were not informed that the traditional boat right was cancelled. We did not receive any email and we only saw the advice in the bus station. However Kumano Travel was able to refund the amount immediately while we were still in Japan.

Excellent organisation

Perfect organisation and I really enjoyed the trip. I did the recommended Takahara, Chikatsuyu, Yunomine, Katsuura overnights after an afternoon start in Tanabe. However if I did it again i would overnight in Tanabe (lots of nightspots to enjoy) for a morning start and not stop in Takahara. And I would be very very tempted to use the night gained to tackle the difficult last hike to Nachi. More tips which may help. I am a fitter 65 year old and tended to be at the lower end of the time estimates for each hike. I luggage forwarded direct to the final destination (which worked great) so I only hiked with rain protection and a few change of t-shirt/underwear/shoes. Absolutely no need to lug all of your gear over the trail. The people I met on the trail who did all regretted their choice. For equipment I used a small backpack ( marketed for ladies daily hikes) and a small string pull backpack on my front. I hung my umbrella and rain poncho by keychain on my trouser belt which gave a nice weight distribution so I didn't notice the weight. Wasn't going to win any fashion contest though. There's very little/nothing to do at night in some/most of the overnight stops so need to take night time clothing unless you're at a grand ryokan. I hiked in proper walking shoes and running shoes according to the weather which varied between torrential downpours which soaked everything and clear/sunny. Even after the downpours there is little mud on the trail but during the rainstorm the trail turned into a stream about two feet wide and one inch deep which I was obliged to walk through. If I did it again, I would plan training shoes for clear weather, and waterproofs for rain. My last day worked out great. By getting the 8:11 bus (IIRC) bus from Yunomine to the trailhead, I had 5 hours to walk (13km) to the end of the easier hike and then pick up a bus to Shingu with plenty of time to visit the temple there. By planning ahead, I then caught a train to Katsuura which gave me plenty of time to shower and dine out on seafood in Katsuura which was one of the highlights of the trip. Now this might not sound so dramatic, but when there are two or three buses a day timing is critical and it all worked out just great! Would I hike in Japan again? Yes, I would certainly like to do another walk in Japan.

3 day trek was wonderful

This was a great way to break up a trip to Japan, with some Shinrin-yoku (forest bathing) time between city visits. The trees, ferns, moss, sounds of nature, views, nice people, etc. We shortened our trek so that we could take a bus from Honshu to Mt. Koyasan, also a magical experience! All of this would have been hard to manage without the fantastic service of Kumano Travel - highly recommended!

Great Trail and it all works. however, Webpage is too complicated and communication too complicated. Things have to move faster and easier. Accomodations were as expected. Guide was GREAT!! As so much in Japan, it works perfectly, but you must bear in mind that foreigners are not familiar, so you have to take away their anxiety by making Things "easy" (which might even mean less Options.).

Excellent trek

I had an amazing time during my trip to the Kumano area. The accomodations and food were enjoyable and I was able to adjust my walking plan as I saw fit, allowing me to walk a lot further than originally anticipated. I was disappointed the traditional river boat tour was cancelled due to river conditions, but the message of its cancellatiom was sent to me in multiple mediums and the refund was swift. Overall would recommend this for anyone interested in this type of experience!

Trail with some difficult parts

The trail is well marked and some parts are rather difficult to walk, especially when it has rained. There are various shortcuts possible, for less experienced hikers, where you can take the bus to bypass the difficult parts. The easier parts of the trail can be very crowded.

Wonderful hike

Loved the hike, which we did in three days. We walked the entire portion from Takijiri-Oji to Hongu. The views were stunning and it was an amazing trip. The only reason it doesn’t get 5 stars is because I felt like the last two days were filled with less activities and I wish we would have known that it would have been easy to combine the last two days and travel elsewhere at the end of the 4th day.

We hiked in mid January, no rain, the tracks were dry and we had sunshine. At one stage there was a short flurry of snow. Not sure if we were just lucky but it was a wonderful experience. Only met 4 other hikers along the way. Hospitality from owners of ryokans and lodges and home was superb. We are coming back in Autumn to do Koyasan we loved it so much. Thank you

Good but a feeling of having missed something

Very nice trip, lots of wonderful things to see and people we met were all super friendly. For people used to do a bit of trekking, I would recommend the 6 day trip, with stops at takahara/chikutzuya/somewhere nice close to Hongu taisha/Koguchi/Nachisan. Sleeping at kiikatsuura wasn’t really necessary at the town itself doesn’t have much in common with what a trekker is looking for in this trip : it’s accommodations are mostly hotels, all quite old and expensive. The small village on the contrary are wonderful and awesome place to be. I regret the walk timing on the itineraries as we finished most of them in 20%-30% less time, so ended shortening some walk that we could have done. In general still a wonderful trek, I will probably do it again this time on the full path, planning everything way more in advance to get the best accommodation as this make a big difference in the whole experience. People at the office were extremely nice and helpful, continue the excellent work!

We greatly enjoyed the walking and the accommodation and meals provided were really good too. Fortunately we had excellent weather. The staff at the Tanabe office were very friendly and extremely helpful. They gave us some last-minute suggestions which made parts of our walk more enjoyable. Excellent overview of Kumano kodo

the trip is nicely balanced between walking , bus and boat. the trail follows closely the original nakahechi route . the walk through the forest , villages and town are scenic and not too tough for average hiker like us.

Lovely trek, you can complete faster though

Day 1's trek was short but actually rather steep and technical. Day 2 at the first one third - steep and technical, be careful and would recommend walking sticks. We were moderately fit and completed the treks for each day in about half the time recommended.

The treck overall was well signed and times for walking corresponded closely to the information on the maps. Given he winter break, in some places it was apparent that the treck had not been used in the last month - gravel, stones etc on the path which made walking challenging on downhill slopes, especially combined with rain. You may want to note that on your website. The suggested day walks / split of walks on the website and map are a bit misleading though - the suggested day 1 and 2 routes are actually very short, and especially the day 2 that we did from Takahara to Chikatsuyu could have been done in one day. The Takahara accommodation was amazing so we are glad we stayed there, however would suggest to show the split of routes on the website and on the maps differently (or refrain from using a split in the maps at all - it's actually quite difficult to get a good overview on the full route in order to figure out the splits).

Unforgettable

Overall it was a very memorable experience, particularly the first three days. Days four and five in our itinerary could probably be combined as Shingu was a little underwhelming (two hours was plenty), and it may have been better to head to Nachi on the afternoon of day four, following the boat ride. That said, Nachi was spectacular in the morning (day 5) with smaller crowds.

Can be confusing.

The Kumono site is full of information, but there is so much on it that I found it confusing and actually it detracted from the planning. I think it would have very useful to have been sent a hard copy of a map of the area, wherein one can see how far places are from each other. The bus system is reasonable but rather expensive ( the tourist routes always seemed to cost more than the routes used by the locals) and I was not prepared for the amount of busing required to get from A to B.

This is a great itinerary to use if you are not very fit or haven't done any hiking before. I would leave plenty of time each day to complete the hikes but the time estimate was very good. The days that the path was very steep were only short hikes, and the one day where is is a 5 hour hike the path was mostly flat. I'm a 19yr old woman, and I was walking alone. I felt incredibly safe the whole journey and I met a lot of wonderful people!

Absolute highlight of my trip to Japan

I could not have asked for a better experience on the Kumano Kodo. Spending two days hiking followed by a boat tour and a trip to Nachi was a wonderful way to get into an area of Kansai that's far less frequented by international tourists than Kyoto or Osaka. The first two days were intensive hikes (especially in August with the heat and humidity) but the views were stunning and the overall experience was a once-in-a-lifetime one.

A great expeience

Very nice route selection, and I was happy to be able to visit all of the 3 Grand Shrines. My only regret is perhaps missing out on some hiking during the boat tour day. There was not a lot to do in the town of Shingu so having some more options available could be useful. The itinerary suggested to stay until 3:00 but I found it to be more time than necessary to explore the area. I don't think I was traveling during a popular season and it was also weekday because I found that most of the restaurants/rest area services mentioned in the literature were not open.

I love the Kumano Kodo!

I feel like we stumbled into a magical place in the forest. The hike was not easy or short but it gave us the opportunity to savor the clean mountain breezes and to walk the path that all the ancients had taken. Despite going through the large rocks in the beginning of the hike (the one that symbolizes birth) I had not a scratch on me afterwards. Hiking for hours and hours up the hills was quite tiring while we were doing it, but after a short night's rest, all aches and pains disappeared as if by magic! I am not kidding! I felt protected the whole 5 days that we did the Kumano Kodo. It is truly a mystical and peaceful place. Words cannot do justice to the beauty of the place. The reservation system was also very efficient! We were expected at every inn we reserved and the whole community was just amazing and wonderful.

Unforgettable experience

The Kumano Kodo pilgrimage is everything I had hoped for. From the moment you begin in Takijiri, you could feel the mystical aura of the Kii Peninsula. Just by walking through the forested path, breathing the fresh air and soaking in the serenity of the area make you a better person, I promise :). This trip would not have happened without the helpful team in the Tanabe City Kumano Tourism Bureau & Kumano Travel Reservation System websites. It made our trip easy and effortless.

Splendid scenery

We were four 55 plus adults, reasonably fit but not anything out of the ordinary. We loved this walk because of the magnificent scenery, the peace and quiet, the shrines and temples and the friendly people we met. It's a totally different perspective on Japan, far removed from the experience of visiting Japan's big cities. We found the walking to be manageable for us but not easy (for the first two days). If you have knee problems you may find it hard as there is a lot of ascending and descending and you are certainly ready for your Onsen by the time you reach your accommodation.

Trek

I could trek only for 1 day through forest from Takijiri to Chikatsuyu (there was no accommodation available at Takahara). There should be more signs on the ascent before the remains of the Uwada- Jaya Teahouse.I wasn't sure till I reached the teahouse remains if I was on the right track. Due to the Typhoon there were heavy rains hence could not do the 7 km from Hosshinmon-oji to Hongu Taisha also the boat tour was closed. Overall the region is beautiful and even tough most travel ended up being by bus instead of a trek it was still enjoyable.

Amazing trip

I was travelling on my own and had been quite nervous about that but everything went really smoothly. I hardly saw another sole but the mountains were so beautiful and the trek was challenging enough for this not to be a problem at all. My only surprise was that it took me on average 1/3 less time than the websites said to do the treks so a 9 hour walk took me 6 hours which meant the 5am starts were really not neccessary!

Beautiful scenery and walk

Set in the beautiful Kii peninsula, this walk tests your fitness but is paid off in the scenery. It is a very wet area and can be slippery over the boulders and tree roots, so good footwear is essential. The walk from Hosshimonoji to Hongu takes us through tea plantations and villages. All the hosts were very friendly and we were made to feel very welcome and looked after. Do not expect any big shrines in the first 2 days but after that, the Hongu, Hayatama and Nachi shrines were impressive in size. Shingu castle foundations had the most beautiful cherry blossoms with hardly a soul around. Daimonzaka surrounded by the big old trees was a great walk for personal reflection.

 Detailed Itinerary

BEFORE YOUR VISIT

  • PREPARATION

Preparation and planning is the key to a safe trek in the sacred Kumano mountains.

Choose a route that you have adequate experience and physical strength to safely complete.

Wear appropriate clothing and footwear, and carry necessary gear.

NOTE: Details sometimes change, especially bus schedules, so please double-check times before your trip.  If you notice something incorrect, please let us know. Thank you!

  • WHEN TO VISIT

The Nakahechi route is open year round.

Summer can be hot and humid, and winter has a slight possibility of snow at higher elevations (from end of December to end of February) although it usually melts shortly it falls. The winter months have shorter daylight hours.

Japanese national holidays and long-weekends can be busy so best to avoid (especially golden week in the beginning of May and Obon mid-August).

NOTE: It is often best to come mid-week as capacity is limited in smaller villages along the trail.

  • RESOURCES

There are many useful resources related to the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes.  Please use these to make the most of your trip.

Maps and Official Guide Book, are available onsite in Tanabe.  Online “Pilgrim Packs” including these materials can be mailed in advance.

DAY 1
Transfer to Tanabe & Takijiri, Walk Kumano Kodo

Overnight: Takahara

  • DAY 1 OVERVIEW

DAY ONE is a transfer to the trailhead at Takijiri-oji by train and bus, followed by a shorter but steep walk on the Kumano Kodo to the Takahara Settlement.

NOTE: The Kumano Kodo is a mountain trail, therefore walking times vary greatly depending on weather, season, personal experience, and fitness.  Please plan accordingly for a safe walk, as many people underestimate the difficulty of the terrain.

  • TRAIN FROM OSAKA TO KII-TANABE (JR Kuroshio 3)

     Depart: 8:58 Shin-Osaka
      Depart: 9:19 Tennoji

      Arrive: 11:21 Kii-Tanabe

The JR train travels down the west coast of the Kii peninsula.
