My partner and I opted for the advanced trek with our hiking experience and were nicely challenged. We stayed in phenomenal ryokans and got to experience traditional Japanese housing and different style of accommodations from guest houses, ryokans, and entire homes to ourself. The luggage transfer was timely and Kumano Travel supported any inquiries we had. Would highly recommend this package for simplicity to anyone! In late March the weather was mild and the cherry blossoms were approaching their peak. We modified this model itinerary to the following (overnight stays): Tanabe>Chikatsuyu>Kawayu Onsen>Yunomine Onsen>Koguchi>Katsuura. This resulted in some longer, tougher hiking days (particularly Chikatsuyu to Kawayu Onsen), but allowed two nights in the Hongu area staying in beautiful onsen villages. I couldn't think of anywhere better to recover and recharge in the middle of the pilgrimage, and it would have been difficult to spend enough time in Hongu if we had been hiking straight through. I'd recommend staying in Katsuura, too, as it was conveniently located for catching a morning train the next day and also had lots of accommodation and meal options, as well as some incredible cave onsens that are definitely worth checking out. The luggage transport went smoothly and I would highly recommend including this. All our hosts were lovely and we really appreciated their hospitality. In terms of the booking process, it can be very intimidating at first especially with the limited and very inconvenient time window for website booking access in the UK. It took me about 3 hours to build and submit my booking request for the full (modified) itinerary, so I didn't get to sleep until after 3am UK time. My suggestion would be to submit an 'approximate' booking for roughly the itinerary and accommodation options you want, and then work with the agency via the chat function to make further adjustments with their recommendations. You can use the chat function at any time, not just during the limited 6-hour window, so it's much more convenient. As the website does not always show real-time availability, I found it better to work with the agency staff than rely completely on the options shown on the website. The hills can be steep and tiring, so be prepared for a hard journey if you follow the entire Nakahechi trek from Takijiri-oji to Kumano Nachi Taisha. But it will be well worth it!
