Wonderful and memorable journey

I highly recommend this trek to everyone who enjoys hiking. The hills can be steep and tiring, so be prepared for a hard journey if you follow the entire Nakahechi trek from Takijiri-oji to Kumano Nachi Taisha. But it will be well worth it!

Grateful for the amazing support received

Our Kumano Kodo trek -6 days had been an amazing experience for me and my friend. The support we received from Marianne and her team is top notch. Everything was made easy and comfortable, leaving all the headaches behind. Marianne is very responsive and helpful. We are grateful for all the support provided. Can’t wait to arrange for another booking to do the Kohechi route sometime next year! Will definitely book with Kumano Kodo community reservation centre again.

A Truly Unforgettable Journey on the Kumano Kodo

We did the Kumano Kodo Nakahechi route in October and absolutely loved it. Everything was super well organized — luggage transfers, accommodations, meals — so we could just enjoy the walk. The trail itself is stunning, with peaceful forests, shrines, and small villages along the way. Every stay was cozy and the food was incredible. One of the best hikes we’ve ever done — beautiful, meaningful, and perfectly balanced between nature and culture. Highly recommended!

A Japanese hiking Experience

The second part of the trail wasn't as difficult as the first one that was very steep, but walking through the forest and mountain was nice and it has incredible views. Some places had a historic explanation, that made them interesting to learn about the ancient traditions and culture.

beautiful first solo trekking

I did the 4-day trek from Kii-Tanabe to Kii-Katsuura, I started it alone and made a lot of friends on the way, ending up knowing everyone arriving at Nachi the last day. The trail is very well maintained and frequented, but not crowded. There are a lot of signs on the way, and the map they provided was also clear and useful. I booked it with a little advance and most of the places were gone. On the third day I could not find any accommodation in the Koguchi area. I decided to reach Koguchi on foot, take the bus to J-Hoppers Kumano Yunomine Guesthouse and then go back to Koguchi the next day to restart the hike. The timing with the buses was a bit tight, but everything worked out in the end. I tried to book as much as possible the meals, but I had a few uncovered, and for them I bought everything before the start since there are not so many places along the way. 100% recommended!

Thank you for supporting a phenomenal experience

Having walked many of the Spanish Caminos, or volunteered in albergue, since 2008, I was eager to walk the Kumano Kodo. How lovely it’s been to find such a well maintained path, so clean and easy to navigate, but especially one that still has deep meaning, is still truly spiritual, one that is still respected by those who walk it and where we are welcomed with such kindness. While the web site can feel daunting, it really has all the information one needs. My suggestion is to order the information kit, study the map carefully, assess what one can truly walk per day, see what buses are available to make days feasible, and only then go back to the website to pick accomodations. Online people give the impression this is a hardeous route (walked Nakahechi), that it will be full of dangerous insects, super technical, a real trek into the wild, but nothing could be further from the truth. The places I quickly selected, based on distance I wanted to walk and price range, all were lovely surprises, each for their own reason. But in the end, any pilgrim know that the tourist demands while the pilgrim shows gratitude. A bed and a roof is what we need. But when an onsen awaits and we are welcomed so kindly and fed like kings and queens, the experience is nothing short of extraordinary. It’s an experience, not a trip/visit. So grateful this route is has not turned into a simple bucket list for people looking for a cheap vacations or a tick on their bucket list. Thank you for allowing me to experience the culture, to be able to be immersed in it. May all your efforts to preserve the authenticity of this sacred route pay out. May the KK learn from the mistakes made in Spain that have denatured the most popular routes for profits and statistics. My few recommendations: better explain bus routes and provide schedules or links to them. Better explain that the three main « shrines » are small park like sites/compounds that can be visited in an hour or two. Also, please provide more details for those wishing to obtain dual Pilg status: where one arrives on site, where one must present themselves on site. It was truly anticlimatic to arrive in Hongu, limping, to be received by people sending us to the wrong place to get the certificate, because they had no understanding of how we accessed the site. Yes, we must go down these stairs and then come back all the way up! Thank you for all your important work to maintain the authenticity of this experience, for pilgrims but more importantly the local communities.

Amazing experience

We totally enjoyed hiking the Kumano Kodo and we very much appreciated your service booking the trip. In terms of your bookings everything was great. I will probably mention this a couple of times but there were two things I would suggest. First, the walking km on your guide seemed way off. The second day your guide indicated approximately 12 km , our watch and phone indicated we had walked close to 30 km to complete that daily tour. Each day seemed significantly different. I would suggest you make it clearer where the accommodation is versus the walking end point . Both the second day and the fourth day we were required to take reasonably long bus rides which we were not expecting after a long day of walking. On the second day because we were late the public bus did not go to our accommodation and we had a long walk to get there . Other than that everything was great . We received our dual certificate so that was very exciting

It's an excellent walk, but be prepared for the ups and downs

The Kumano Kodo isn't technically difficult, and it's well-marked pretty much everywhere. But it is a lot of up and down hiking - 4000m up over the course of 4 days. There aren't many stretches where you can just relax and walk and lose yourself in the journey - you have to focus at all times, because there are loose rocks and protruding tree branches pretty much everywhere. Also, be sure to bring snacks with you, because there are very few places to stop and buy anything once you leave the villages you sleep in each night.

Challenging, incredible, enlightening

The trek was definitely challenging due to the weather conditions in early September 2024. It was hot and extremely humid. We carried plenty of water and the notes about drink access are important to read. The experience was well worth the effort and the booking through Kumano Travel extremely useful. An experience for those who are prepared and relatively fit. We walked for 4 days to complete the track. Absolutely FANTASTIC!!!!

Everything went well, but a clarification regarding vegetarian is needed - it means no meat at all. This includes . . . no fish, no seafood, no shrimp, no squid. Nothing like that at all. I hate fish. Otherwise, the places I stayed at were all very good.

Challenging and Wonderful

My husband and I are in our early 60s. We are fit, especially my husband (who swims, cycles and does yoga) and hike with some regularity, although it had been several years since I’d been on a multi-day hike. We absolutely loved the mountains and shrines, learning about the history, the unique villages, the warmth of our hosts, and the call of the bush warbler. This was a very special pilgrimage for us both. I was worried about the last day as the locals call it the Back Breaker. And it was tough. But, honestly, I would call it the Knee Buster. I walked with hiking sticks, thank goodness, and my knees are still recovering from the long descents days later. That is the only thing I would say: if you have sensitive knees, watch out.

Nakahechi Trail Review

Fantastic Hike!! More than we expected. The Community Booking Service was amazing and they organisied everything for us. We were a party of 9 and 6 of us were Vegetarians and this was catered for with fuss. Mako from the Booking Service was amazing with all our requests. Was always accommodating, polite and respectful. The Hike itself was everything we expected and more!!! It was a challenging hike and we were well prepared. The Beautiful Scenery in Autumn in the mountains was magical with the leaves of Orange, Red, Yellow was breathtaking!!! We are now discussing if we should another hike here using another route.

  • PREPARATION

Preparation and planning is the key to a safe trek in the sacred Kumano mountains.
