A very well designed itinerary

The 4 day Highlight Walks itinerary was a great way to see the temples, shrine, onsens, villages and coast around the Kumano Kodo - it felt like a very complete mixture of different experiences and the information about bus timetables etc was incredibly helpful. The team also suggested an excellent alternative for Day 1 of the itinerary, which fitted our timings and better. We're very grateful to the team at Kumano Travel who helped us put everything together. They also found us a good choice of accommodation.

Very nice trip, well organised. The information about the luggage service could have been a bit more detailed. For example about the size and maybe some photo’s how to pack.

Overall, my experience with Kumano Travel was very positive. All the bookings worked perfectly, and I had no issues at all during my trip. Everything went smoothly and according to plan. Dear Kumano Travel Team, The only aspect I think could be improved is the initial response time through the website. It took about a month and a half to receive the first reply, even though I sent several messages requesting information. Once communication started, everything went well, but the initial waiting period was quite long. Second, for people living in different time zones, it can be a bit complicated to make the initial reservations. During our active hours, the reservation system is often closed, which adds some difficulty to the process. Thank you very much for your support and for helping me organize such a wonderful trip.

Well organized

Everything was well organized. The accommodation on my trip was very good, dinner and breakfast in all places was delicious. The transport of the luggage was also very good. The suggested tours were not too long, so that there was a lot of time to enjoy the onsen. I could even combine two tours on one day because of a bad weather forecast, so that I did not miss anything. The only difficulty sometimes was the transport by bus, as it was often too crowded and you often cannot use the IC card. Bus drivers did their best though.

Strengths and weaknesses

Overalll, I think you’re providing a great service linking all the different providers in the Kumano region to travelers as a one stop shopping destination. I imagine that you have few staff and limited hours but if the demand remains high, which it certainly seems to be the case, you need to expand your ability to meet the demand. It took over two months to get confirmation of my requests, which was really too long. Another matter which is out of your control but is something you might bring up with the local tourist associations is to channel the large Chinese groups to charter transportation rather than filling up the local buses. This was really a headache for everyone.

I was nervous about how this trip would work out. I have never used an online site to plan a trip so I wasn’t sure what to expect or how it would go but I am here to tell you that everything went perfectly. We did not have one issue. All of the accommodations, food, and excursion went perfectly. I would book through this site again and again! Thank you for making our trip a pleasurable one. Excellent Service!

Mako was very responsive, patient and helpful in the planning our Kumano Kodo pilgrimage. We were a group of 14 people so it was hard to make reservations to accommodate our group size but Kumano Travel made everything easy and affordable for us. I had to go back and forth with questions, additional requests, and clarifications and Mako patiently answered all my questions though sometimes not immediately but still within a reasonable timeframe. On the actual execution of services by all suppliers, we are equally happy with all services provided. All arrangements (guide book/pilgrim pack, luggage service, lunch box, ryokan, and boat ride) went smoothly and on time. The 4-day highlights walk was a good sampler and introduction to the Nakahechi Trail. It really covered pretty much the highlights of this part of Kumano Kodo.

We wanted to do Kumano Kodo to get our Dual Pilgrim bagde, and we did it! It was thanks to Kumano Travel that for us it was a stress free, very enjoyable experience. We loved the lodgings and the food provided. And being free of carrying our bags was awesome too. I often find myself daydreaming on being back there, specially in Kawayo sitting down in the River and drinking a beer. Thanks for making this easy for us, so we could focus on enjoying the experience.

A really active day, with a filling lunch and super relaxing stay in the evening.

This was the most active and challenging day of the hike. It was so nice to start the day with an onsen bath and then delicious breakfast at Fujiya. The hotel provided a shuttle bus to the start of that day's hike. The first part of the hike (7km) was nice, but I found the second hike (2km) after lunch far more picturesque in the forest heading up to the little shrine. It felt more challenging as it was so steep. On arrival at Ryokan Adumaya, the staff were SO kind seeing how exhausted I was and soaked after hiking 9km in pouring rain. They made my stay very special and I enjoyed it a lot.

Kumano Kodo March 2024

I was travelling alone and I had a wonderful experience from start to end. All the accommodation was perfect, food was fabulous, staff in the tourist centres were helpful. I had a guide on the first day and that too was a good experience. She was extremely knowledgeable and friendly, and I was confident to walk alone the following days. The pathways were serene and quiet and relaxing, though there were quite a few stairs on some walks. I would recommend Kumano Travel and their itineraries.

Beautiful locations, but too much for a "beginner" hiker.

The highlight walks are said to be at a level for beginner/novice hikers. That is true for some parts of the hike, but I would say that some parts were just too much. I'm in a fine physical condition, but the walk from Hongu to Yunomine Onsen was just too much for me and my wife. We were extremely exhausted throughout parts of the walk and, honestly, this should not be here as an option; just take the bus for that part. This is also true for some of the shrines visited during the other days. An extreme amount of stairs. Besides this, the places you visit are beautiful, which still makes it worth it.

Wonderful Food, Onsens and Guides!

We went on the 4 day Kumano Highlight Trek, with guides each day. The overall experience was spectacular. Food - The meals at each Ryokan were great. For both dinner and breakfast, there were usually between 10-20 different dishes to try ranging from small servings of pickled vegetables, to shashimi, to grilled fish. Accomadations - The language barrier presented some small challenges such as understanding simple etiquette such as when to wear the Yukata or certain customs. However, all hosts were incredibly accommodating and experienced. Rooms were always immaculately clean, and onsens at each location had their own character. Guides/Treks - hiking on this journey was light, but for some may have been challenging due to the amount of elevation gain. We had 3 guides and each helped add to the experience and gave us a better understanding of the spiritual and historical context of the area. Would highly recommend guides for everyone doing this same trek.

Beautiful, Warm, and Welcoming

With only a short time in Japan and a desire to qualify for the Dual Pilgrim status, this itinerary fit my needs. It gave a taste of the Nakahechi Route and left me desiring for more. Starting from connecting with the great staff at Kumano Travel in Kii-Tanabe who updated me on the weather and any route changes/issues, all I encountered was beautiful surrounding, great kindness, wonderful hot springs, scrumptious meals and a plan to come back and spend more time in this area.

PERFECT

We couldn't have wished for a better trip on the Kumano-Kod trail. Waka, our guide, made it even more memorable, accompanying us on a couple of days, giving us not just information, but ways to understand something quite difficult to put in words, about Japanese spirituality and culture. We were a little worried before we started, that our 7-year-old girl might find it all a bit too much, but we need not be: everything surpassed our expectation. Superlative
