Amazing - We will come back again!

This trip was great. Kumano Travel had all the resources and guides we needed for our journey. Staff at Tanabe Tourist Centre were very friendly and helpful. Bus to Kawayu Onsen was convenient. Kawayu Onsen was beautiful - we will be back. Pension Ashitanomori family were warm and welcoming. The path for the Kumano Kodo trail is very well marked and maintained - we want to come back again. I will recommend Kumano Travel and the friendly people of Wakayama to any foreigner looking to visit Japan.

Perfect!

Kumano Travel was so helpful in helping me organize my walk on the Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage trail.Without their help I would have been lost! They arranged the itinerary, lodging, and luggage shuttle service which made the walk so much more enjoyable. They were very prompt in getting back to me when I decided to do the walk at the last minute, after snowboarding in Niseko. Thank you Kumano Travel!

KUMANO KODO - that feeling you carry even after the trip is over.

I recently completed my Kumano Kodo Highlight Tour and I'm incredibly grateful for the entire experience. Kumano Kodo is not just a hike. It's a journey that slowly seeps in your spirit. It may not be for everyone but if you are seeking peace, reflection, and deeper connection to culture and nature, Kumano Kodo is an experience that will stay with you long after the trail ends. There is something grounding about the stillness of the forests, the shrines, the centuries old paths that pilgrims have walked before us. Every step felt calming. Every moment felt like a reminder to slow down, to breathe, and simply exist. When I went back to Tokyo, I realised how much the place affected me. It felt like I had left a piece of my heart in the mountains of Wakayama. I was not ready to say goodbye. I wished I stayed longer. That's how deeply the whole experience stayed with me. Kumano Kodo isnt just a destination. Its an experience of a lifetime and a feeling you carry even after the trip is over.

Bad organisation, lovely place

The booking system is terrible. The idea of only being able to book during Japanese working hours is mad. I didn't get a response for I think 6 weeks. One of the hotels we were booked into was unsatisfactory. It smelt of old smoke. We couldn't find information on where to meet our guide. It turned out that we were supposed to meet the guide two bus rides -- 40 minutes away -- from the hotel we were staying at. The area was lovely and the walks very good.

Kumano Kodo 3-day Highlights Trip

Overall we very very glad we took this trip, this is clearly a very special corner of Japan and well worth exploring and spending time in. Kumano Travel was very helpful in preparing flour trip, if not instrumental in actually facilitating all the required logistics. I would like to point out two areas for improvement, however - the response time on my initial request was almost two months. When Kumano Travel finally responded, we had just two weeks left before departure- please try to improve your responsiveness on the initial booking request, it will save travellers a lot of anxiety. Once on the trail, a number of small inquires were dealt with very quickly, however - we had limited time and chose to take the 3-day Highlight Trip. Don’t! Most than half of that time is wasted in mostly rather cumbersome bus travel. The intent is to give people the opportunity to visit the three primary shrines and enjoy a bit of hiking along the way. However, the endless time on or waiting for busses / connections spoils the experience. Please consider not to recommend this option but encourage guests to invest one more day and hike the entire stretch from - for example - Hongo Taisha to Nachi Taisha and Falls. This would enable travellers to see those two/three major sites and also experience the magic of some dedicated hiking time, without too much time lost to bus travel.

Hongu area walk

Beautiful walk through forest and small villages. Very well sign posted and an easy track for most of the way, some ascents and descents a little more challenging than others. My favourite stop was the tea house run by two ladies about an hour into the trek. Magnificent views from places along the way.

Very well organized!

Everything was very well organized. The lunch box service, the luggage service - everything. We had a great time hiking and enjoying nature. We met a lot of Japanese people who spoke very well English, which was quite surprising. The only thing which was not as perfect as the rest of the experience was the website where you can book everything. It was really slow, so we had to use a VPN.

We were a hiking family of 4 (2 adults, 2 tweens) we only had a couple of days and used the travel service to organise our accommodation, help with route and plan meals and luggage. The whole thing was amazing - it literally ran to the minute, our bags of miraculously appeared at our accomodation, our hosts were gracious and welcoming. I'd highly recommend the whole experience. Both our sons really enjoyed the trip and we got a real joy from the glorious Kumano Kodo route

Great Holiday!

We wanted to do this walk and we decided to follow one of the example itinerary and it was great, we were first time traveller's to Japan and managed to not get lost despite the language barrier and the route through rural Japan. There was a delay in getting from a booking request to a confirmation, but once we got past that everything was organised. A few tips on how to use the local buses etc may have helped but we managed to figure out how the system works. Overall a great trip, in hindsight we should have done an extra day or two as the 3 day version was pretty easy.

One of my best hiking experiences

The whole trip was very well organized and put together from accommodation, luggage shuttle, walking guide to even bento box to take away with. The whole process was seamless without me having to worry about lugguage, bento or how to get from one point to the next point. All the staff I came across were friendly and professional which made my first hiking experience in Japan enjoyable and memorable. I cannot thank the organizer Suzuki Kana San for her input and my walking guide Yasui Keigo San for his wealth of knowledge. Thank you both I do hope to visit another time and hopefully get to visit Koyasan which I didn't this time. Apologies for not replying sooner - things tend to get hectic when on the road and I arrived in Sydney this morning from Tokyo.

Tiring but totally worth it!

This is the main agenda why we travel to Wakayama. I'm an amateur Travel and Landscape Photographer, and that is the main reason why I visited the place. I can say that, the walk/pilgrimage is tiring, but it is totally worth it! I can't express my satisfaction with the things that I have experienced here. My favorite activity here in Japan so far.

Great Hike!

Overall, it was an enjoyable hike, loved the views! However, the Daimonzaka climb to Kumano Nachi Taisha was a bit tough for beginners. A better starting point will be taking a bus to Nachi waterfall and to hike up Kumano Nachi Taisha and end it at Daimonzaka. We were too exhausted after the climb from Daimonzaka to make it to the Kumano Nachi Taisha. It was also lovely to explore the quaint towns along the Kumano Kodo area, each town was charming in it's own way. The trip was very well coordinated and arrived to our respective destinations relatively hassle free. Loved the experience of staying in a minshuku and tasting awesome minshuku food.

This was a great trip. Highlights: Excellent service at Ryokan. Lots of good time in nature. Ekiben were yummy. All the booking was done for us no problem. There was a nice Kumano info center at Tanabe. Lowlights: Transportation for busses (and local trains) was pricey. The 3-day Kumano Kodo highlights walk was an unforgettable experience filled with incredible views, glimpses into the spiritual side of Japan, and a healthy amount of walking (about 25km in 2 days).
