Great overall
Great experience overall, beautiful landscapes and fun hikes. I would say the hikes were relatively "easier" than what was advertised - something that was shared across all hikers we met. For instance, although we're not the best hikers, the second or third day was advertised as a 7-9 hours hikes but only takes 6, lunch break included. So hardcore hikers should be aware of that.
Luggage transportation worked perfectly well. Food was good throughout (great lunchbox on the 2nd day!).
I think calling it a "4 days" circuit can be slightly misleading as it is actually only 2.5 days of hiking + 3 nights. So it would probably make more sense to call this a "3 days" circuit. This is not a complaint, I knew this was only 3 days, it was clear from the description. But to avoid any confusion you might want to call it a 3 day trip.
The main and only major disappointment is the end of the third day. Ending at Mitaki Sanso hotel in Nachisan is not a good idea. First the hotel is really expensive but probably the least comfortable of all three we stayed at during the trip. For the price you actually expect a proper room with your own bathroom but that wasn't the case (hotel staff were great - no complaints there). Second, it would make way more sense to spend the last night in Nachikatsura (simply walking one extra hour or taking a bus when reaching Nachisan) for several reasons: the town is famous for its tuna; has many natural onsen (while Mitaki Sanso only has a bath with hot water); and you're closer to the train station that will take you to your next destination (means you don't have to rush so much in the morning).

Best thing we did in Japan
An absolutely wonderful experience. We felt well prepared for the difficulty of the hike and so well taken care of in our accommodations. Booking with Kumano Travel was a bit of a learning curve but ultimately it made the experience so much smoother, it would have been very difficult to arrange on our own! It was lovely to get out of the cities and enjoy the natural beauty of rural Japan, true hospitality, and a slower pace to take in the scenery. I will be recommending this trek to anyone I know who is visiting Japan.

Wonderful Hike

Incredible experience
Highly recommend hiking the kumano kodo trail. This was a great way to experience a different side of the 'typical Japan itinerary' and have wonderful homestay experiences which were incredibly special. Booking through Kumano travel made organising the trip so easy.

Amazing experience
Walking a part of the Kumano Kodo was the best part of our trip to Japan. We dedicated just three nights, but I would have done more because everything was beautiful. The nature is stunning, local people were friendly, the trail is very well maintained. We loved it.

Be Prepared!
This was a beautiful and historic trail, however, due to equipment breaking during the hike we had to end early. This is definitely not something to take lightly--preparation is key!
That being said, it was truly an amazing experience. I will be back to hike again!

What a fantastic trek

easy to book and very seamless. itinerary was also easy to follow. however would love for a more comprehensive and updated bus timetable or more options for set off time (with bus and train timings) as a tourist it was difficult to locate the bus timetable (especially since some of the ones on the site is only part of the bus timetable)

Hiking during Dec Winter
Initially worried that it will be too cold but in fact it was very comfortable to hike. Temperature ranges between 1 to 5 degree Celsius. No rain during our hike and blessed with sunny weather. Anther concern is if we are able to complete the hike before sunset which starts to get dark after 4pm in Dec. We managed to complete the most difficult stretch (Ogumotori-goe) just in time. We started at 730am for that stretch. I have 2 teenage son and a 8 year old boy plus my wife on this hike. The 5 of us made it!

great walking trails
The three days are increasingly strenuous but managable. Signage is excellent and it would be difficult to get lost. We used no GPS navigation and there was cellular coverage for the entire trail. The ancient trails are in very good order with stone stairs and flagstones. My 15 yo daughter managed this walk as her first multiday walking trip with minimal complaining. The luggage shuttle makes this walk luxurious.

Very challenging hikes
The Dainichi-goe route from Hongu to Yunomine Onsen is very steep but mercifully short. Make sure you have plenty of daylight left leaving Hongu. The recommended bus from Kii-Tanabe arrives almost too late to fully enjoy the Hongu shrine. Our hike was in late November so by 16:30 the trail was nearly dark when we arrived in Yunomine.
The Kogumotori-goe route from Hongu/Ukegawa to Koguchi is moderately challenging and boasts a couple lookouts with stunning views, even on the rainy day we walked it was still beautiful and relatively easy to find footing.
The Ogumotori-goe from Koguchi to Nachi is grueling: “Dogiri-zaka" has almost 2500 feet of elevation gain over three miles. The stairs never seem to end. Afterward there are several smaller ascents and descents until a long descent into Nachi. There are no substantive views but many miles of lush forest.

Outstanding Trek
The Nakahechi (Hongu to Nachi) trek is a fantastic option for people who don't have time to complete the full Nakahechi route. You get to see and experience much of the historic Nakahechi route including the onsen towns, forests, and mountains in a couple of days. Every day of the trek was spectacular.
The forests of Wakayama are beautiful and filled with mystery. There is something magical about hiking up a mountain, turning and corner to find a Buddha statue that is hundreds of years old smiling back at you. Whilst not all of the peaks have view points, the ones that do are spectacular and make the walk well worth the effort.
This trek is rated as advanced, however I found it to be easily manageable if you have some hiking experience. However, I would warn the final day of the trek from Koguchi to Nachi may be challenging for some, especially the Dogiri-zawa segment. Some of the hills can be steep and there are sparingly few support places along the way, so some experience is required and packing enough food and water is important.
I modified this hike slightly by adding part of the loop to Hoshimonoji from Hongu on the 1st day, and an extra leg to Kawayu onsen on the 2nd day. Both were well worth the extra distance.

Demanding and nice trek
The trek was demanding and provided a nice encounter with history and nature. The signposts are very helpful and now and then information is provided on historic features of the trek. The trek part from Koduchi to Nachisan is a challenging one and very satisfying once completed. Tip: bring anti-mosquito repellent. Good gear needed, in rainy circumstances some parts of the Koduchi-Nachisan trek go through water.

Its a very nice and beautiful trail. There are a lot of signs, and there is a good map. Getting lost is nearly not possible. The third day is a little bit hard, so make sure you have a good condition.

Excellent Kumano Kodo Trip
Our family did a two day hike of the Kumano Kodo. It was a fantastic experience. Although the temperatures in July went up to 35 degrees, the fact that the Kumano Kodo is almost exclusively in the forests allowed us to enjoy this magnificent path. It was a truly wonderful journey.

Nice hike with challenging sections

We had a great time on the Kumano Kodo, except perhaps the weather as it rained a lot during our hike. The path was clearly marked and visiting the shrines and temples enlightened us. We would recommend it to friends.

Spectacular
The trek was definitely as hard as we expected it to be, but thoroughly enjoyed every moment. The terrain is very rugged, but everywhere you look is spectacular. Highly recommend this trek. Also highly recommend taking up the luggage and lunch service options - the trek is pretty hard going, so not having to carry a heavy backpack made the whole thing more enjoyable.

Great way to experience kumano kodo on a shorter timeline
This itinerary involved beautiful hiking, jaw-dropping views, and a variety of interesting and memorable accommodation options. My only complaint is that the logistics were a bit complicated/stressful, given the limited frequency of the buses and trains. Every day it felt like we were rushing to catch a bus or train or just to give ourselves enough time for hiking plus sight-seeing. Take the time to figure everything out in advance to avoid the stress, and talk to the helpful staff at Kumano Travel if you have any doubts.
As noted in the description, the hike from Koguchi to Kumano Nachi Taisha was quite difficult and time-consuming, but it wasn't as bad as we feared. That said, be prepared for plenty of steep slopes and slippery stone pavement. Get an early start, bring trekking poles, and be careful! Unless you're used to hiking long distances with heavy packs, utilize the luggage service.
If you want to have time to visit Hongu, you'll need to leave Osaka/Kyoto earlier than recommended. And if you're hiking from Hongu to Yunomine Onsen, plan accordingly so you aren't hiking in the dark.

Beautiful area, good hike, nice accommodation
We did the Dainichi-goe, Kogumotori-goe, and Ogumotori-goe section of the trail, following a suggested route from this site. Day one was pretty simple, up and over a ridge. Day two, the Kogumotori-goe section we did while it rained hard on us the whole day, we didn't get to see any of the views from this part but, it was a good hike, not too strenuous but pretty slippery in places. Day three was Ogumotori-goe and it was a bit of a challenge in 90+ degree F and 90% humidity where everything was still rather wet. I loved ending up in Nachi but truly I felt that the effort of the trek was greater than the atmosphere of the trek. It's pretty but, there is only one scenic view spot and very few other focus point items along the way. I would have thought with all that climbing that we'd see more vistas. Mostly it's trees covering an area that appears to be logged in the past and is replanted (a long time ago). Really nice but, I've done many other trails that had more to see for far less vertical effort. Maybe if it wasn't so hot and humid I'd have found it more enjoyable as just a nice hike through the wood. If I went back, I'd skip Ogumotori-goe (do some other section) but, I'd take a bus to get to Nachi as that was really pretty.

An amazing adventure along an ancient pilgrimage
We really enjoyed our time in Wakayama, hiking a section of the Kumano Kodo. The Nakahechi route from Hongu to Nachi offers a great taste of the pilgrimage, with a short walk to start and each day being more challenging than the last. It offers an opportunity to visit two of the three Grand shrines. The Kumano Travel team did a fantastic job planning our itinerary and making changes up to the last minute.

Kumano kodo hike
One of the best things we did in Japan! The hike was fantastic. The ryokans and food were amazing! Kumano Travel were incredibly helpful throughout the whole process. They went above and beyond. Could not recommend this more highly! Was an incredible experience.

Three days in Kumano kodo
During our two week trip to Japan, we've had decided to do a short three day hike in Kumano Kodo. It was the highlight of our trip and a good contrast to the cities. We've enjoyed the itinerary chosen as it was difficult, but not too much and the scenery was very beautiful. We especially enjoyed our first stay at Yunomine onsen. The owner was very welcoming and we enjoyed the authentic Japanese room and a very full and delicious supper.

Sportive and beautiful
We were 4 people under 30, with good physical condition, it took us 9 hours to arrive to the bus stop at Nachi having stoped almost 3 hours in total (so 6 hours walking). The path is very well indicated, we only had the paper map from the tourist information center and it was enough. The hardest part are stairs so it is easy to have a steady rhythm. We really enjoyed this route.

Tough but highly satisfying hike
This route was paced like a run-up to a spartan race. The part from Yunomine Onsen to Koguchi was a relatively easy walk. Then, it’s followed by one of the toughest yet scenic stretch - through the amazing yet tranquil forest and the pleasantry of the sight of Nachi falls awaiting. Peppered in between were excellent accommodations recommended by Kumano Travel, pampered with wondrous meals to energise and reward oneself from the walks taken earlier.

Tired but good trek for adults (You need to be prepared)
We walked Dainichi-goe route, Kogumotori-goe (Ukegawa to Koguchi) and Ogumotori-goe (Koguchi to Nachi).
2 of Most challenging part were Dainichigoe route and Ogumotorigoe route.
Though route was short, Dainichigoe was tough crimbing route, and first 1 hour of Ogumotorigoe (from Koguchi) was also tough.
As it rained, kogumotorigoe route was a bit slippery, and fog cartain prevented to show us great view from Hyakkengura.
But overall, we feel histrical air, and sacred atmosphere, enjoyed great scenery.
And Kumano Travel was friendly, did arrange smoothly, arrangement was nice.
I highly reccomend this Trek if you are active walker.

Beautiful scenery, pristine forests filled with historical landmarks
The hikes were well marked, difficult sometimes but very rewarding because of the beautiful scenery all over. Best to train before you go, and let the shuttle taxis carry your big backpacks.

Great hike, scenic and cultural, challenging at times
Wonderful mix of walking in nature, visiting two great temples and a beautiful waterfall. Had the trail mostly to ourselves during the covid-19 crisis so hard to say how it would feel in normal times but it was very peaceful and beautiful.

Magical scenery and lovely stops along the way

Unique Experience
I went on a solo hike. It was beautiful, peaceful, introspective, challenging. Kumano Travel logistics are the perfect combination for a traveler who wants to mix independt traveling while still having a guiding service every step of the way. Amazing experience
I couldn't recommend this trip highly enough - walking up to the Ogumotori-goe pass in the morning mist; jumping into the clear cold river after hiking into Koguchi; watching monkeys swing through the cedar forest on my walk into Hongu... It was all superb, and well-worth the long trip to Japan. The guesthouses booked by Kumano travel were excellent and very good value. I doubt I could have arranged it without their help.

A great trek that requires dome stamina on the last day but very doable and easy to follow the well marked path. Lovely onsen and met quite a few fellow walkers, both International and Japanese.

A wonderful walk through the countryside, but . . .
The Kumano is a wonderful walk through the Japanese countryside, offering glimpses of what pilgrims have endured for centuries, as well as glimpses of the magic of the area's shrines. Unfortunately, the walk was heavy on the hardship while light on sites until we reached the waterfalls. The shrine, temple and waterfall were amazing, but we had a long way to go to get to amazing. We weren't helped by unseasonably warm temperatures, topping out in the mid-90s Fahrenheit.

Excellent time!
While it was hot, humid and rainy for part of the time, our time on the Kumano Kodo was a highlight of our time in Japan. It was amazing to walk on a centuries' old path, and we really enjoyed the experience of staying in smaller villages and having a traditional experience.

A rainy but rewarding experience!
Hiking the Kumano Kodo during the rainy season is a unique challenge! The rocks used to pave parts of the path can become treacherously slippery. During my trek, an Australian woman even slipped on the trail and broke her wrist! That said, the overall experience was peaceful and spiritual. Hiking in the mist felt like traveling through time. The forested mountains of Wakayama are beautiful and the Kumano Kodo is a well-kept trail. It was definitely challenging but I could almost feel the footsteps of past pilgrims, as I made my own way along the trail.

We really enjoyed our trek. The web site made planning the trip very easy (it is so thorough!), with a bit of give-and-take with your planners as the reservations were made (the planner was also super -- for example remembering that we needed box lunches for one of the days). The accommodations were great -- wonderful and helpful people, great food, baths, yukatas are now our family favorites!
We appreciated having an English speaking guide -- but a bit of feedback on where they could have been more helpful. Thanks so much! the Kumano Kudo was a real highlight of our Japan visit!

Great adventure with beautiful nature & delicious food
I was really keen to go on a hike during my first trip to Japan, but a bit apprehensive to go hiking solo. However, with the help of Kumano Travel and Tanabe City Kumano Tourism Bureau I felt prepared for my adventure with detailed route, maps, bus timetables, etc! The trek started out fairly manageable albeit steep, and ended up quite demanding on the last day with the 'body-breaking' slope of the Ogumotore-goe - though the stunning Nachi falls felt like a worthy finish.

Good trekking days
We walk for 3 days, which I think are enough as the landscape is quite similar along the way. The routes are easy and the estimated times are a bit exagerated on our opinion (we managed to do all stages in less than the minimum). The accomodation is expensive according to what you get. The luggage shuttle service is very expensive, but you might have no alternative depending on what you carry (it may be cheaper to leave part of the stuff in an hotel before starting). Said that, it was a good experience overall to discover a different part of Japan.

Exhausting but definitely worth it!!
As non regular hikers, we had a very interesting experience - the landscapes are breathtaking, particularly Nachi falls and some view points. Breathtaking was also the way from Koguchi to Nachi falls, called body-breaking slope..;)
The highlights for us were the stays in the Minshukus, especially Yunomine Onsen and Nachi Falls, and the onsens after a long day walking.
It is definitely an experience we will not forget and would not want to miss.

Way more fun than I had expected!
I'm not a very seasoned hiker, but I still had a lot of fun on this vigorous trail! Skipped the very difficult third-day hike, but was able to visit Nachi Taishi and the waterfall by bus. LOVED being in the Wakayama countryside: the forests were breathtaking!

Route is very forresty. Only a few spots for look out. Route is very well signed, no problems to find your way. Also other acces information is very handy. We walked the path quicker than estimated. More places to sit with watertap and small shops would be welcome. More information along the path would be welcome.

What a great hike!
We made one change to the itinerary. We left our luggage with Kumano travel and had it brought to Yunomine onsen. We then went directly to Hong, visited the shrines and other sites at lunch and then hiked back to Yunomine onsen. This way we did not have to worry about the timing of the bus and could spend time really soaking in the sights. The Hike from Koguchi to Nachi is very difficult make sure you are really up for it. The maps given to us were very helpful and I would love to come back to the area again someday.

Great introduction to Kumano Kodo
This is a very nice tour which brings you to the heart of Kumano Kodo. You pass famous locations such as Yunomine Onsen and Nachisan, which gives a great introduction to Kumano Kodo. The small family hotels on the trek are excellent.

Great length of a trip and gave us the experience we wanted
This trip made stops at some of the highlights of the trail that we really enjoyed, without feeling too drawn-out or repetitive. Enjoyed seeing the shrines in Hongo and Nachi, and the Onsen in Yunomine. The only drawback to this trip was the long train ride to Osaka from Nachi-Katsuura as compared with Tanabe. We had to stop in Tanabe because it was the best place for us to store our luggage coming from Osaka. Would definitely recommend this route to anyone considering the trail!

One of the stand-out memories of our honeymoon
My husband and I visited Japan for a month for our honeymoon, and this hike is one of my favourite memories. The area is stunningly beautiful and it was lovely to immerse ourselves in nature for a few days. There were a fair amount of people on the trails when we visited but it didn't feel busy. We were very lucky with the weather with no rain during our hike, though we could see how particularly the last day would be tricky in wet weather. We were worried about how long we would take to complete the last day of the hike but we were fine. The first day to Hongu took about 1.5hrs, the second to Koguchi just under 5hrs and the last to Nachi 6.5hrs. This website gives you all the information you could want on the hike and we felt well prepared thanks to it.

Skip Ukegawa to Koguchi
I absolutely loved my visit to Yunomine, Hongu, and Nachi. The hike between Koguchi and Nachi was spectacular. I could have skipped the hike between Ukegawa and Koguchi, with the terrain seeming very similar to the final day, but without the dramatic views. Don't get me wrong, it was still worth doing if the Koguchi to Nachi leg wasn't an option.

Great experience!
Staying at the various ryokans and guesthouses, enjoying the scenery and meeting the people was a great experience!
It can be tricky to navigate to the different areas, trailheads and bus stops. I highly recommend visiting the Kumano Travel information center in Kii-Tanabe.

Great trip
This was a great hike, with beautiful scenery and great places to stay along the way. In fair weather, the hike was not as difficult as we expected. The hike was made even better by the detailed information available on the official website and from the staff of the Tourism Bureau.

Amazing experience
We loved our trip and experience of walking the Kumano Kodo for a few short days. We will never forget the richly forested area, mossy paths and stone stairways, and reading about the history along the way. For us, two long days and one short were enough of this kind of walking, where it is all in the forest and without many viewpoints. Bear this in mind when you are choosing whether to do four or six days - I was worried that we didn't have long enough, but it was fine. We loved what we did and had a great time - friendly, welcoming people, great traditional food, and meeting very few other people along the way.
On our first day it was raining heavily - we were only walking from Yunomine Onsen to Hongu Taisha, so it was fine, but I would imagine that the stone stairways would be absolutely treacherous in this kind of weather. They were slippy and tricky as it was at points.
The walking itself was not as tough as billed - the walk from Koguchi to Nachi was long, and steep at times, but not beyond anyone of normal/reasonable fitness for walking. We are middle-aged but fairly regular walkers, to give other readers some idea of how they might compare. I had been ill for much of the summer prior to our trip but still managed it fine. Compared to our walking in the Swiss Alps last year, it was fairly moderate rather than tough walking (apart from the potentially treacherous steps!). The timings in the information on the website are very generous and there is really no need to leave at 7am for the Ogumotori walk as some places advise. The timings on the wooden posts along the way are more realistic.
Navigating around the area is pretty easy once you are there and get your bearings, people are happy to help and the buses run on time.
Thank you so much to everyone at Kumano Travel - we really appreciated the excellent organisation and having everything booked for us through the website. We also stopped in at both the Tanabe City and Hongu Taisha tourist information centres, where the staff couldn't have done more to help us and were so friendly.

Just be careful
I walked through the torrential rain. Last leg would be impossible or extremely dangerous to do when raining. Just keep an eye out for the weather and you'll have a great trek.
The path is unforgettably beautiful, I'm glad I chose this way to be able to reflect, listen to nature, and come to peace with myself.

Enjoyable

My Second Home, Kumano Kodo!
This trip wiped clean all the stress of my job and life in Japan and reset me back to my true self in just three days. I don't think I've ever felt happier or more peaceful on a journey in my life. I was a little worried about such a long hike with so little civilization, but I never felt worried at all. I got to know myself up in the mountains, cradled in nature, and slept each night in a soft futon after a dip in onsen waters. It was heaven.

Very enjoyable route
Despite some poor weather we throughly enjoyed our hike. However, it is worth being prepared to navigate some slippery stones if it is wet. We managed using care and path edges but if it had been wet on our final day heading into Nachi it would have been fairly treacherous!

Probably the most touching experience I have ever had
The nature around is so beautiful that you cannot not be touched by it.
All the walks I did were perfectly signaled. The maps and details one gets are just perfect.
I went alone, am 50 years old, in good shape, but not a great walker. It all went perfectly fine.
Because of time restrictions I started with Yunomine Onsen and arrived in the late afternoon there.
The next day decided to walk the loop starting with the Akagi-goe that is gorgeous, then going to Hongu Taisha that is such a treat when you discover it coming in from the back and then the return to Yunomine Onsen is another gorgeous walk.
The walk from Ukegawa to Koguchi is nice and relaxing.
Then comes the best part of it, Koguchi to Nachi Taisha.
You read that those 5km of walking up, as you gain close to 800m, is so tiring and that they never end.
What I can tell you is that every time you look up you discover a fairy tale landscape with the stones covered in moss and the vegetation that changes. The trees that sing with the wind, it is such a mystical experience, at every turn you hope there will be more of it and not less.
You just take it very slowly and beauty will take care of the rest.

I really enjoyed the trek. My only disappointment was the last accodation I stayed in at Nachi which was not great. It's old and would need refurbishing. The matteras are also too thin. I know that it's the only accommodation in that city but I should have taken a bus to Katsurra.
Otherwise, we really enjoyed our trip and your service was great.

We loved the walk! Amazing scenery and a lovely feeling of isolation.The rocks became slippery after a shower of rain, so we had to tread carefully. The views were breathtaking and the walk was quite challenging ,especially the walk from Koguchi to Nachi but so rewarding! A very memorable few days!

Worth the effort
There were three walking days in our package: the first day (around Yunomine Onsen) was the shortest and easiest, the second day (Ukegawa to Koguchi) got more challenging and the third day (Koguchi to Nachi) was the hardest and longest. The fourth day was just transport to the next destination. The indications in the Kumano Travel web page were all accurate (they are very detailed, to take your time to read them all) and we had no problem getting there by train from Kyoto and moving around by bus when necessary. We went at the beginning of July and the weather was very hot (over 30 degrees Celsius) so we appreciated that most of the trail was in the shadow of trees. Luckily there was almost no rain, otherwise the ground’s surface would have been more slippery: you walk many kilometers over old stone stairs up and down the wooded hills, surrounded by old trees, ferns, and moss. You get to see temples and the largest Torii Gate on Earth, among others. We did not meet many other hikers. The most beautiful scenery was arriving at Nachi with the waterfall behind the pagoda. The entire trail is very easy to follow as there are many signs on the way. Enough physical fitness is necessary, so practice in advance if you usually do not go hiking.

I did not do the part between Koguchi and Nachi. Everyone said it could be very difficult and there was no way to get out of the path if I was too tired. So I took the bus, but I was very happy also about this.

We had a really good trip on Kumano Kodo, but the rates were quite important compared to the other regions we visited (Kyoto-Hiroshima-Miyajima-Kagoshima-Tokyo).

Great walk
Everything was wonderful and well organised. The Tourist Information and Kii-Tanabe station was wonderful. Unfortunately my girlfriend was unable to walk due to an injury just before we left, and they were so helpful in giving her information about Public Transport so that she could meet up with me each day. It ended up working out really well. It was wonderful. The only tip that I would like to give is to perhaps inform people that you follow the maps from right to left, instead of the traditional Western left to right. It took me quite awhile to figure that out. Once i had that figured out it was easy.

Very difficult but rewarding
WOW what a journey; every day was more difficult then the last. Overall a rewarding experience. The accommodation provided was nice & comfortable and the food provided was excellent. After a long day trek there is nothing better that a nice hot onsen; something to keep you going up those never ending climbs

Beautiful Scenary
It was challenging doing the trek. However, everything you see around you are so beautiful. Steep steps along the way. Those with knee issue, ensure u have your walking sticks with you. Love Kumano Kodo!

2 days of hiking
I wish I read more about the difficulty of that last day of the trail! And I should have been better prepared. It rained the entire day making an already hard hike even more grueling. We were soaked and cold. Climbing the rock "stairs" was exhausting and the rain made it more challenging b/c they were extremely slippery. But it was a beautiful trail. My only regret is I didn't hire a local guide to get more history as we walked.

My first trek trip
The trip was really fun. Transportation is quite pricey. There was not much view to enjoy during the walk but it is a fun walk anyway. I expect the website to help us on which month of the year.

Doing a fair amount of research ahead of time really helped to make this venture a great experience. Local transportation is fairly simple to use, although I preferred to walk most of the time. The trail from Yunomine to Hongu-taisha was a little bit tougher than I expected (mostly due to the humidity ontop of the rigorous ascents/descents). I was a little perplexed after finishing this trail to see a warning sign for poisonous pit vipers at the end of the trail... but what's life without surprises, right? Just a heads up for future hikers on this trail.
The Kogumotori-goe was an awesome hike. The ascents are fairly gradual and flora changes fairly often. Lots of ridges and some stone-step sections. The panoramic viewpoint was easily the best part of this trail, and a great reward after you reach ~halfway point of the route. The final descent into the village next to Koguchi was a bit strenuous on the knees. Watch-out for the mossy stones! Very slippery, make sure to take your time with those.
Unfortunately, I was unable to do the Ogumotori-goe trail due to heavy rain. I chose not to take the risk given the steep climbs and presence of stone trails the route detailed. I did opt for a still risky road hike from Shingu-station to Nachi-taisha & Nachi-no-otaki. Well worth it for the experience and final destinations. That waterfall is beautiful.
Great overall experience. One day I would like to return and complete the Iseji & Ogumotori-goe routes.

walking while raining
It was realy difficult to walk when it was raining, i hve choosen to take the bus for the last 2 days. No connecting transportation between koguchi and nachi.

Kumano Kodo Trek
What a blast. Two solid days of trekking. The first day we walked from Yunomine Onsen to Hongu Taisha to see the giant stone torii and then to Koguchi. It was a dry day, we say tons of lizards, insects, butterflies, and four snakes! The view from one of the highest points in this hike was fantastic. The next day we hiked from Koguchi to Nachi Taisha. It had stormed overnight and continued to sprinkle throughout the morning, which completely transformed the forest into a verdant paradise of mosses. We had a nice encounter with some lovely red deer early on, followed by a grueling hike up the dogiri-zaka. That climb is no joke. The rest of the hike was low key and very pretty, culminating at the spectacular pagoda and waterfall. The signs over the whole train were exceptionally clear, as were the maps we got in Tanabe.

We had an amazing time on the Kumano Kodo. The guesthouse hosts were all very welcoming and some of them served fantastic Japanese meals. We really enjoyed the onsen.The booking process was very easy and hassle-free and all the arrangements went smoothly. Thank you!
