Didn't love the bathrooms, but everything else was amazing
When we arrived we were not in the mood to be bathing/showering potentially in a room with other people. Despite my above criticism, everything else was amazing. The dinner portions were very large and varied. The breakfast had a good array of western options. The lunchbox was cooked well, even if it wasn't anything fancy. The rooms were very, very good. We were very thankful to have a drying room to dry our wet gear. It is located on the trail. Breakfast is nice and early, allowing for early starts. Washing and drying service available for cheap. Host was very friendly, even though his English was limited. This was also by far the best value place that we booked. Shared bathrooms weren't amazing. Nor did the WiFi reach our room. But these were very minor issues, that we didn't care about. We highly recommend this place.

It can't get any better than this
We stopped for just one night because of our travel schedule but I wish I could've spent more nights in this perfect place. We traveled as a couple and were lucky enough to be able to reserve a room in Shizen-No-Ie, and we looked forward to sleeping in a old school. Everybody involved in this lodging for pilgrims embodies the japanese omotenashi. As a sicilian, I felt right at home! We were welcomed by the staff of the bar that is just outside the lodging with drums and 'Welcome bubbles!', which put us into a great mood after walking all the way from Ukegawa. Despite arriving earlier than check-in time the rooms were already prepared with futons laid out so we could rest. The bar closes at 17:30, which is also the time the dinner is ready, so we had time to rest a little, eat the rest of our bentos from the previous accomodation, have a tea and some beers, shop a little in the nearby local shop. I suggest pilgrims bathe right away so that the water is still hot and clean. Sadly most of the other guests either didn't know how to properly cover the bath or added cold water, so it was lukewarm. Also I found the taps of some showers open. This is not a complaint with our hosts, but a warning: please be respectful to other guests so that they can bathe properly. Clean your body twice and remove any loose hair that might be stuck to your body. Cover the water properly and most of all do not leave the taps open. Do not waste water. They announced dinner and breakfast through the school's announcement system which was fun, and we ate in the canteen with the other pilgrims. We requested a meat-free dinner in advance, and it was filled with many delicious plates. Breakfast was equally impressive (and self-service). I will always dream of the french bread that was served, which was drenched in honey. The only downside to this place is that it's in Japan, which is far away, and that I cannot visit it more often. I miss everything about it and hope I can come back someday.

The staff was really sweet and gave us an heartwarming welcome. Loved the small cafe on the outside so we could all rest and have a drink there Food was okay

Beautiful accommodation on the river
I enjoyed being able to hear the river from my room. The food was great. Lovely onsen. Friendly staff. Very much enjoyed my stay.

Kumano hike
This is a very well located large and well managed accomodation in a man old school- very pleasant to share meals on large tables either other hikers. I arrivee early and was able to have a beer from the outdoor bar just outside
