At check-in, I was given an explanation of meal times, bath hours, and other details, but there was just too much to remember. I think it would be helpful if there were a note with that information in the room. ・To be honest, both breakfast and dinner were disappointing. An announcement over the intercom said the meals were ready earlier than the scheduled start time, but was that announcement only in English? It kind of… annoyed me. It seemed like you could get unlimited refills of white rice, but when I opened the rice bin to get more, it was empty. Someone from the kitchen refilled it right away, but seriously—if you knew the bin was empty, you should’ve kept it stocked. Even while we were still eating dinner, they started rushing around preparing the next day’s breakfast, which made for a very unsettling meal. I also felt like there weren’t enough side dishes. ・The bread at breakfast wasn’t very good. ・I suppose it’s what you’d expect for the price, but if that’s the case, couldn’t it be a little cheaper? The 100-yen air conditioning fee was annoying. Was there any information about this beforehand? ・The bento was pretty good. Was it outsourced?

That Row of School Taps Took Me Straight Back to Childhood

It used to be a school, so it totally triggered my campus-kid memories. That row of old taps were so school-like. Staff were super friendly. After breakfast we were leaving to hike to Nachi, and one guy goes, “Heading to Nachi?” I said yes. Then as we walked off he started banging a basin like a send-off drum 😂 Random, funny, heartwarming. Best kind of pit stop on a long trek.

Excelent

Everything was great. I had a great dinner; the location is great for the next day because i very close to the starting point. The staff was just great. What I was very impressed, because the next day in the morning after the breakfast I received a lunch box, which was perfect. I was the first one that was starting the pilgrimage, and the guy at the reception was announcing that with singing on an ancient instrument. I felt very nice because they created that special moment.

A Unique Accommodation

The Shizen-no-Ie in Koguchi was refreshing oasis of “chill” along the Kumano Kodo. The host and staff were friendly and relaxed. After our arrival and a visit to the onsen we kicked up our feet, had a beer, and listened to 1960’s pop music in the front lawn area until dinner. The former schoolhouse vibe of the facility was unique and a welcome change from the more formal hotels and guesthouses we had been staying in. The dinner and breakfast were adequate as was the bento.

A Simple, Authentic and Wonderful Experience on the Kumano Kodo

Koguchi Shizen-no-Ie is a very simple accommodation, and in many ways it reminded me of the albergues along the Camino de Santiago. However, simplicity here is not a weakness—in fact, it is part of its charm. The atmosphere is warm, welcoming, and perfectly suited to hikers walking the Kumano Kodo. The accommodation offers everything a walker could wish for after a long day on the trail. I particularly loved my private room, which was cozy and beautifully authentic, with traditional tatami flooring and a comfortable futon. Sleeping in such a traditional Japanese setting made the experience even more special. The attention to detail was also much appreciated. Guests are provided with a beautiful yukata, as well as a small bathing kit including an onsen towel and a disposable toothbrush with toothpaste. These may seem like simple gestures, but they make the stay more comfortable and add an authentic Japanese touch. Another highlight is the wonderful onsen, where you can wash, relax, and let the fatigue of the day's hike disappear. After walking the Kumano Kodo, there is perhaps nothing better than soaking in hot water and simply enjoying the moment. The accommodation also has a shared dining hall, very simple but perfectly in keeping with the spirit of the place. And the food was a real surprise: the traditional Japanese meal was sublime, authentic and deeply satisfying after a long day of hiking. What I appreciated most about Koguchi Shizen-no-Ie is that it doesn't try to be luxurious or sophisticated. Instead, it offers something much more meaningful for a pilgrim: simplicity, authenticity, hospitality, sharing, and connection with the spirit of the trail. If you are walking the Kumano Kodo and looking for a genuine experience rather than a conventional hotel stay, I highly recommend this place. It is a wonderful opportunity to experience Japanese hospitality, share the journey with other walkers, and immerse yourself in the authentic atmosphere of the Kumano Kodo. A simple place, but one that leaves a beautiful memory. Highly recommended!
