We had dinner, breakfast and a lunch bento catered for, all our meals were fantastic. It was a simple, comfortable stay, and we really enjoyed sporadic conversations with our hostess using both our translator apps during meal times. While the accommodation is a (very) slight walk from the kumano trail, it's situated right next to a bus stop, which made catching the bus the next morning extremely convenient. We also wandered Chikatsuyu a bit after checking in, and enjoyed some homemade soda at a nearby cafe called N.S.カフェ. Would highly recommend!

女将さんはとても親切で、作ってくれた食事も美味しかったです。ゲストハウスにはスカイという名前の猫がいて、とても人懐っこいです。 値段は少し高めで、村からは少し離れていましたが、全体的には素晴らしい滞在でした。

automated translation: The owner was very kind, and the meals she prepared were delicious. The guesthouse has a cat named Sky, who is very friendly. The price was a bit on the high side, and it was a little far from the village, but overall it was a wonderful stay.

Minpaku Matsuri | Supper, Breakfast & Lunch box

Our host was very welcoming and hospitable. She's hilarious and an excellent cook and these were two of our favourite meals on the pilgrimage, as well as the delicious lunch box. We also really enjoyed meeting Solar, her cat. The guest room was large, comfortable and well equipped, with large en-suite bathroom facilities. We couldn't get the plug to work in the bathroom but didn't ask for help so it's possible we just didn't figure it out! Location is very convenient for the pilgrimage but it's on the edge of town and next to a main road; we weren't disturbed by traffic noise overnight though. I'd highly recommend staying here and wish the host all the best. The 'beer garden' in the centre of town is excellent, I especially recommend the home-made plum wine.

Had a great stay here!

The host was very welcoming, and cooked wonderful food for us. She has a restaurant background and it shows.

A very average homestay, compared to many others we’ve visited on this trip. The elderly woman is set to her schedule and totally ignored our request for no meat in our meals. The food is ok nothing special , the bento box lunch was mostly rice. The room was clean and not the most comfortable . The woman is helpful when asked but speaks no English . It would be fine, except the cost was very high, close to 3 star temples and ryokans but not even close in terms of experience. Just not worth the cost. It’s not in town but rightn on the busy highway. There’s a minimal grocery near but nothing else.

Beautiful Chikatsuyu

Would recommend this place to anyone. A lovely lady (& her cat) ran it by herself. Beautiful home cooked dinner & breakfast together with a bento box for lunch. Accommodation was comfortable, with a hot bath, fridge, tv, futons, etc. Location was just across the bridge from the supermarket & handy to the bus stop for our next day to Hongu. She didn't speak too much English, but that's half the love of travel. Therese & Pete

Very welcoming host, but just ok

The elderly host was quirky and fun! She spoke no English but spoke with us through her iPad, which worked well. The accommodations were in a trailer on the property. A little dark and dingy with a lot of black mold on the floor. The meals were just ok. The location is about a 10 minute walk from the trailhead, so not terrible, but not right in town. The guest house is right on the side of a highway.
