Not relaxing, and no personal touch or help

Way too automated, not enough human touch. Checkin was complicated and time-consuming requiring help from room cleaners, who were the only people available. Our room PIN needed to open our door did not arrive on the website until long after we needed it. No instructions for induction frying pan for our barbecue and only Japanese instructions for our washing machine. How do you set it for drying cycle only? Trial and error.

Off site reception a problem

This accommodation was rated poorly due to the fact that the reception is located off site, via a web chat check in process. They did not have receipt of our booking and took quite a while to finally locate our booking. They could not confirm if were were receiving supper and breakfast as part of our booking. I had to contact Kuman Travel direct, which required me to turn on my phone provider at $10 for the day to confirm the meal arrangements. The supper was delivered at 4pm so by the time we ate our meal at 6pm it was cold. The meal itself was delicious. However the breakfast the following day was not a bento box,but located in a cafe a 10 min walk away from Sen Retreat. It was cold toast and warm yoghurt and totally unacceptable. We had the coffee and went to the local bakery for breakfast.

Very comfortable accommodation. Great shower and very good bedding after our long days hike. Convenient to Coop across the road. Access to washing machine and dryer greatly appreciated as it rained during our hike.

Nice place, good but not too much food

We (a couple) stayed here during spring for one night on our first day on the Kumano Kodo. Very pretty and excellently equipped accomodation, well maintained inside and outside. We had a nice view on the riverbank, and the forest behind it, too. The rooms are converted from containers, so they may be very in the summer or cold in the winter. Very close to the bus stop. There is no permanent staff on the premises. Check-in was done via an iPad, and it was a bit unusual, it would have taken us longer to get started if we hadn't met the cleaning personal, who was very helpful and called the remote receptionist for us. We had some questions during our stay and we had to call the remote reception for that, too, and the person on the other side usually did not know the answer, had to either call us back or ask as to write an email. The dinner was Japanese style, varied and of high quality, however, we think it could have been more (and some other places gave more) after a day of hiking. The breakfast was in a cute café in the village, again, good, but not that much. We did not need to show any identification, just tell that we came from the Sen.Retreat. There is no onsen but nice bathroom.

I needed this

Amazing amenities, almost more luxurious than I planned it to be. Food leaves something to be desired (for my taste...) I loved the town of Chikatsuyu. It seemed so much more alive than Yunomine Onsen

Room was sufficient but very small for four people. Deck outside with heated table was nice. A bit more of a welcome would have been nice. We felt like the only ones there.

Very comfortable accommodation. Beds/pillows were particularly comfortable.
