A spiritual experience and a real adventure

The Kumano Kodo is the best hike I have ever done. The cedar forests are beautiful. The trail is well marked and the history is well preserved. We were treated kindly by the local people we met in the villages. It’s not an easy walk. Day 3 is undoubtedly tough with steep paths. However, the experience is truly rewarding and you finish as a different person to how you started.

Spectacular walk & experience!

I completed 3 days of the Nakahechi Trail, and I can say the Kumano Kodo was one of the most spectacular walks I have done. The nature is stunning, the Japanese history and culture is fascinating and the spiritual pilgrimage of the walk was on my mind throughout the experience. I loved the nature of the Kii Peninsular and how the landscapes changed throughout the walk. The villages were also beautiful and interesting to see the Japanese-style architecture and everyday rural lifestyle along the way. The shrines scattered amongst the trees and besides the rivers and on top of the mountains were so special and a meaningful place to stop, rest and reflect. I recommend the Kumano Kodo to everyone who loves nature, culture, history, spiritual experiences, walking and a challenge. I hope to go back someday and walk the last two days of the Nakahechi Trail and more!

Really enjoyed the walk

Beautiful walk, a really nice way to see the countryside and forests of Japan. The last day was longer than expected at 24km with the Akagi-goe shortcut (would have been 27km if we had done the walk we originally planned). I would recommend a longer second day or adding an extra day. A lot of people took the bus to shorten the third day which would also be an option.

An incredible experience that we will never forget!

As the first stop on a 2 month trip to Japan, the Kumano Kodo experience set the tone for an incredible time in a truly special country. The organization through Kumano travel was perfect, including the luggage transfer and booking of all the accommodations. The guesthouses were amazing and the hospitality for each night is what made the 4 days so memorable. Please visit the area and take part in this special spiritual, cultural and gastronomic experience!!

fantastic trek May 2025

solo female traveller, did this itinerary mid-May 2025. Had a fantastic time on Kumano Kodo. Kumano travel made accomodations booking and luggage transfer very smooth and easy. Weather in May was very comfortable - only had some rain on the very last day. Trail conditions can be slippery when wet, make sure you have hiking shoes with good ankle support. Trail can be a bit buggy at times so mosquito jacket/repellent recommended. Felt very safe throughout the trail, other hikers present but trail was not too crowded. impressed with the flush toilets encountered on the trail. Luggage transfer service ensured you weren't carrying too much weight. highly recommend!

A fantastic walking experience in Japan.

My wife and I walked the Kumano Kodo to Hongu over three wonderful days. The route was challenging, particularly the long third day, but we really enjoyed it. The host we stayed with were all wonderful and the walk itself was through a stunning landscape.

Wonderful ‘untouristy’ experience

We enjoyed this experience throughly. Kumano-travel made the planning so easy, and everything went exactly as scheduled. Highly recommend using Komano-travel to take the hassle out of figuring things out. The walk does have a lot of long uphills, but it’s manageable if you are reasonably fit. Boots are not necessary unless you have weak ankles. Waterproof tipped shoes would be nice, and we really used our poles heavily. Many steep downhills too. We were mostly walking on our own so it was a very peaceful time, there were no crowds or pushy tourists. There are not many places to buy food so do take the lunchbox option, and be sure to fill up your water bottle at your accommodation.

Met some great people along the trail - accomodations were all great

I chose the model itinerary for a four day walk. Most of the places are booked up as I'm booking about 30 days ahead. Seems like you often need a bit more time than that to get your choice of guest house or hotel. I simply let Kumano Travel pick the alternatives and they all worked out great. Met other travelers at the stays and often walked with them on the trails.

Incredible chance to experience the Kumano Kodo over two days

My friend and I loved this experience. The Nakahechi route has beautiful views, varied hiking terrain, and the chance to experience small towns and stunning shrines all along the way, plus the nicest people I've ever met at the guesthouses and inns. Even though we booked late, we were able to find great accommodations with access to local onsen baths and home-cooked meals. Would absolutely recommend!!

Peak Experience

A great experience, start to finish. My wife, adult daughter, and I (63yo) walked from Takijiri Oji to Kumano Hongo Taisha over three days (with 3 nights stay). Outstanding natural beauty. Challenging in sections (which adds to the experience). Interesting ancient religious tradition. Delightful meeting co-pilgrims from all over the world. Kumano Travel gets 5 stars: Great website--easy to use. Our lodgings were excellent--wonderful food, an open air hot bath in one, great hosts.

Incredible experience

If you're considering this trek, I couldn't recommend it more highly. We loved hiking through the sacred forest, oji shrines and small towns, and staying in guesthouses along the way. If you have more time I would suggest going for longer to see more of the trail, but 4 days was still very worthwhile.

What an experience.

The steepness of the first day climb had us reassessing what we would be capable of and what type of experience we wanted. What we did find was how helpful, kind and accommodating our hosts were. We ended up doing shorter walks and using the buses.

Steps through time, heart and nature

Walking the Kumano Kodo was a profound experience—both spiritually enriching and physically challenging. The ancient paths, winding through misty forests and sacred shrines, carried a deep sense of peace and mystery. Each step felt like a pilgrimage inward as much as through the beautiful Japanese mountains. It’s a journey that tests your body but nourishes your spirit in the most unexpected ways. Truly unforgettable.

My partner and I hiked the Kumano Kodo Nakahechi route from Takijiri to Hongu. We booked everything through Kumano Travel which made our trip so easy to plan! Everything on the website was very accurate and booking accommodations was incredibly easy. I sent in my requests to Kumano Travel and they made all of the bookings for me and all of our accommodations were some of the best parts of the trek! We got to meet some lovely hosts and other hikers along the way. I truly hope we get to embark on this pilgrimage again someday!

Great travel agent, great model course

Our Christmas-to-New Year trek was perfect - perfect weather and perfect conditions. The model course time estimates are on the slow side, and perfect for a family including out-of-shape 50-year-olds taking long breaks and exploring the sights along the way. Our Kuroshio train was delayed and we almost missed the bus to Takijiri-Oji, our starting point, but the Kumano Travel people came out and helped us with the initial luggage transfer, so it was no problem. They helped us out in the chats in the planning stage too. We had a great time! Thank you Kumano Travel :)

The Kumano Kodo trail offers an amazing journey through rural, traditional, and spiritual Japan, surrounded by breathtaking landscapes. The Onsen and hot bath experiences were highlights, providing a unique way to relax after a long day of hiking. Fabulous Walk, easy to follow and great hospitality

This walk was the best thing we did in Japan! Kumano Travel were fabulous and the info at the Tourist Info is comprehensive and so easy to follow. The website is clunky, but once you work it out, it is the way to organise this walk, and it will save you heaps of money - you don't need an agent! We couldn't recommend this walk highly enough.

Amazing experience with inmmersive adventure

It was a nice trekking with difficult moments that enhace our overall satisfaction of finish it. The road was very well explained, everything felt safe and the whole process was very clear. Very good maps. In addition, something that could improve is the reservation website. In the section of selecting acomodations, there are a lot of questions and its hard to answer in the limited time that the page gives you. Even more without knowing for shure all the information required.

The amount of steps/slopes both up and down may be more than expected for the unfit. We are fit active slim 58 year olds without injury and we found it tough at times. Kumano Kodo

My wife and I loved almost everything about our trek, including the well-marked path, the meaningful and beautiful shrines, the accommodations, our guide (just for the first day), the luggage service and the food. I will say that it was challenging at times, especially the final day, and we might have been happier doing that part in two days. And we were very lucky with the weather. I think some of the steep parts of the trek would have been very difficult in the rain, but we had no rain the entire time.

Excellent - just wish I had more time

I really enjoyed this experience. I did find the trekking hard than I expected due to the heat and humidity and as a result I decided to catch the bus to Hosshimon-oji. I think I would've been worrying all day about making the 4:23 bus and it would've prevented me from enjoying the experience so I am glad I did this. I wish I had more time in my overall itinerary to do this over 5 days instead.

We loved the Kumano Kodo

We did the Kumano Kodo June 14th - 17th 2023, with hiking days June 15th and 16th. I give it 4.5 stars but rounding up to 5 :) I wrote a blogpost about our trek here: https://josiebarth.com/2023/06/16/kumano-kodo/ We stayed the night in Takijiri-Oji and started the trail the next morning. I’m glad we stayed there vs Tanabe, as we would’ve lost time starting the trek early if we had to take the bus from Tanabe to Takijiri-Oji in the morning. If you’re a slow hiker, you might want to consider arriving your first day in Takijiri-Oji and hiking to Takahara. It’s only a few hours hike but it’s very steep. Like doing the stair master on tree roots. The downside of that though is more coordination to get to Tanabe and then the bus to Takijiri-Oji and then starting the trek to Takahara all in one day. We did Takijiri-Oji to Guesthouse HOUSEN on the first day (which is between Chikatsuyu-oji and Hisohara-oji), and it was about 15km of hiking (9 miles). This meant day two was a longer hike of 25km (15 miles), but it was worth it to us because we loved stayed in Guesthouse HOUSEN. The hosts, accommodations, and food were amazing. If you want a slightly longer hike on the first leg (so shorter second leg), consider hiking to the town of Nonaka. The second day from Guesthouse HOUSEN to Hongu was long (25km), but we’re pretty fast trekkers and did it in about seven hours. I think most folks we saw along the trail did it in about 9 to 10 hours. We were happy we each had a hiking pole that we bought at the shop in Takijiri-Oji. We carried lots of water. It rained a little on the first day and was sunny on the second. We absolutely loved our trek. The Kumano Kodo is a very special walk. You’d have to try very hard to get lost the trail it’s so well marked. Grateful I did it and can’t wait to do the Camino in Spain!

Amazing 4 days

We had an amazing 4 days walking the Kumano Kodo. We particularly loved the first village we stayed in (Kiri-no-sato) : the view was out of this world! The weather conditions were perfect (no rain and not too hot in late May), and we found ourselves finishing the walks about 2 hours before the minimal evaluation. We are in good shape but not necessarily trekkers. We recommend looking at your last days of walk to determine how much time a walk will take you (if the weather is similar of course). Always better to arrive early than late! One last thing : there were a lot more tourists than when I did the walk 10 years ago. The bus going out of Tanabe was packed! We were a bit scared that we were not going to have a peaceful experience with this many people around, but after the first day the crowds dissipated, as everyone is at different accommodations and don't necessarily have the same destination that you do. Bottom line : don't let it scare you! We had a great experience, we were alone in the forest for a great portion of the walks, and met some nice people along the way too :) Thank you for this amazing experience!

If you want to have a glimpse of rural japan, this is it!

The plan was very well thought. The times of the trains and buses were exact. There were no delays, and you just have to follow the plan already laid out. The trekking path itself is not particularly beautiful, even if you are lucky to get good weather. The forest is very dense, so most of the time you are just walking on the trail, with very few good viewpoints/landscapes. The trail is easy to follow, with directions clearly indicated. The maps available on the website also help a lot. You pass through several small villages, which was exactly the objective of my trip. In conclusion, it's a worthwhile experience, if you don't mind walking and want to get out of the city.

A very special experience!

We had the best time on our Kumano Kodo trek. Days 1 (Takijiri to Takahara) & 2 (Takara to Tsugizakura) were fairly manageable and easy for us (we are in our mid 30s and athletic). Day 3 (Tsugizakura to Yunomine Onsen) was a challenge due to the huge distance and length of the day. We left Tsugizakura 7am and made it to our Yunomine by 4pm. There were opportunities to take a bus for certain lengths of the walk instead of trekking the entire way, which I'd recommend Kumano Travel indicate to hikers in case they can't figure it out themselves. Overall, it was a trip of a lifetime!

Nakahechi Trail

The trail is well marked and easy to follow, easy enough for most hikers with moderate fitness but challenging enough with a couple of 20km days with some elevation changes. Lots of forested sections and plenty of shrines along the way to see! Definitely order lunch/bento boxes from accommodation as there are not many options to pick up food, especially on the last day.

4days Kumano Kodo

There are suppose to be 3 days walk but because of 3rd day full day raining, we took a bus instead. You can get the printed map (like what it shown on the website) in a booklet at the tourist centre beside the station. First day hike was the most challenging for us. Some section were a bit unclear whether to go left or right down or up. Luckily we met other hikers that we managed to follow. Be aware most of the time you will be alone as not so many hikers and at different speed. Some advice, do train before if you are not as fit as I was; carry the minimum backpack, use walking poles. Day 2 was longer but because we might already been thru day 1,it was much relaxing (day 1 we worried can't reach before dark whick is before 5). The scenary of both days are different. Overall enjoy the walk in woods. The accomodations were all fantastic.

A healing landscape and a spiritual inner journey

The Nakahechi Route exude such a special, powerful and healing energy. Its mountains, forests, villages, sacred and historic places are stunning. In our daily routine, we get so stressed, and considering the pandemic, we are having up and down emotional lives, but those four days at Kumano Kodo put us on total relaxation and helped us to recharge our energy and restore our balance. The route is pretty safe (even for female single traveler) and it's well marked with many signs that indicate the trail, holy sites, and viewpoints. We are very blessed and so grateful for the amazing experience we had at Kumano Kodo.

4 days Nakahechi trek in Dec2019

Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed this trip and would love to visit other areas in the region (e.g. Kumano Nachi Taisha). There were parts of the trek which were narrow and close to the cliff(drop), which would have been scary if it was rainy. We were glad that we did this trek in December when there is less rain. We only had one rainy day out of 4.

A Wonderfull experience

My husband and I chose to do the Nakahechi 4 day walk from Takijiri to Yunomine Onsen in September. This is an experience we would like to repeat. The walk was challenging, especially as the weather was hot and humid (30 to 35 degrees centigrade), but well worth the effort. The heat was tempered as most of the track was in the shade. The scenery was varied and beautiful. It was worth indulging in the walk and not rushing it. Signage was very good, although we did meet some walkers who were rushing and missed a marker resulting in an additional 6ks. The accommodation ranged from excellent to very good and the meals provided were generous and delicious. It felt daunting to organise the 4 day walk, but once there it all fell into place. Kumano Travel provide an excellent service and were very helpful and responsive. Their office was in Tanabe, as was the Tourist Information Centre, where we were able to sort out any last minute arrangements and queries. We particularly appreciated the service they offered regarding our luggage, which we chose to have stored and transported to our last place of accommodation on the walk. This allowed us to travel lightly while walking and not backtrack to pick up our luggage.

Fantastic experience

The 4 day option was perfect for us - we wanted to still see Nachi and we did that as a separate day-trip after our walk, all in all this was really a wonderful experience - very few people, beautiful nature, you walk under the canopy of the trees most of the time which gives respite from the heat, and it is quite a lot of elevation so you feel like you've done a decent hike every day :) I can highly recommend to do this as part of your trip to Japan!

Great adventure

My 14 yr old daughter & I booked the 4 day, 3 night trip. As there wasn’t any available accommodation in Takahara, we stayed overnight in Takijiri & condensed the walking to 2 days. It was not an easy trek, but we managed fine. Info centre in Tanabe was very helpful & helped us call a previous guesthouse to chase up a missing item. The itinerary we printed from the Kumano-travel website was really useful as was the smaller map book. We enjoyed collecting the stamps in our pilgrimage passports along the way. Only got lost the afternoon we arrived in Chikatsuya village, trying to locate the info centre to get directions to our accommodation. Very little signage. However once we found it, the guy was amazing & so helpful. Tips - stay 2 nights at Ryokan Yunomineso if you can, it’s a great place. We arrived in Hongu about 15 mins before the last bus leaves (about 16:50) & didn’t have time to look around the shrine or check out the town. The public Onsen at this Ryokan is fantastic. Take extra snacks and plenty of water for trekking, little along the way & we found we needed more than the bento provided. This is a fantastic experience. Booking though the website was very efficient.

I greatly enjoyed walking the Kumano Kodo. I was pretty lucky because I didn't have much rain, despite walking in early March. The trail is well-marked and easy to follow. Most memorable experience yet!

Our group of 4 young travellers completed the 4 day trek, starting from Takijiri-oji and ending in Yunomine. While some parts of the trek were steep and rough, the whole experience was well worth it. We loved every moment of it and would definitely do it again! The walks were easy to follow, with plenty of opportunity to take breaks. The mountains were beautiful and the people we met along the way were kind and genuine. All of our hosts made us feel very comfortable and welcome and every meal provided was amazing. The shuttle service which we selected worked seamlessly. I would recommend this experience to anyone.

Loved it

Walking the Kumano Kodo was one of the highlights of our holiday. The descriptions were very clear and the paths were very well signed. The nature is very nice and we were very glad to get out of the city. In our view we got to see the 'original' Japan. Day 1 was a good day starting in Kyoto and ending with a 2,5h hike uphill and getting to Takahare. Day 2 was perfect in hiking 14km, going up and down, to the Nonaka area. The last day of this itinerary 1, from Nonaka to Hongu is a very, very long one with almost no possibilities to refill your water supply. With 38+ degrees thats almost a bit much to ask. Dividing the sections a bit more even would be an option. The Kumano Kodo is a must do when you visit Japan!

Nakahechi route with 1 year old

Day 1 - Hike was easy and loved staying in Takahara. Day 2 - Hike was moderate with guide. Day 3 - Hike was long and strenuous even though took bus to Kobiro-oji. Wish we would've taken the bus to Hosshinmon-oji and had more legs and time to walk around Kumano Hongo Taisha. Overall was a great hike and experience. Really recommend getting a guide, the luggage transfer and wished we had more time to spend around the Hongo area exploring all the onsen!

Relaxing hike through forests

I had a reservation for three nights. My first night was in Takijiri (""Day 1""), because the guesthouse in Takahara was already booked out. This added 4 km to the stretch to Tsugizakura to an almost 20 km hike. If you are half-way fit (I do not a lot of sports), it is feasible. It's just that these 4 km are probably the hardest ones because most of it is ascending quite steeply. After that the ups and downs are more subtle. Day 2: I started hiking just before 6 am and didn't see a single soul till I reached my destination. Liked it that way. On the way it got a bit chilly as there were strong winds, so I just put on an additional layer (thin sport sweater). Personally I liked the hike Takijiri-oji to Tsugizakura-oji best. It's you and nature forest. The birds are out in the morning, other than that I didn't spot any animals. Day 3 I went from Tsugizakura to Kumano Hongu Taisha and then to Yunomine Onsen. Kumano Hongu Taisha is not huge so a few hours are sufficient. This stretch was 30 km I felt tired after it, but still I would do it in one go again, because during the hike there is not that much to see, which would warrant a longer time. I was glad I could soak my bones in the private onsen of the guesthouse. Day 4 was getting on the bus at 8:30 and then travel back to Tokyo. Can be easily achieved. Next year I will do another part of the trail :-) Hint: use the luggage service, no need to shoulder all your luggage.

This itinerary worked really well

The only thing is that we really wanted the trek completion stamps, which meant a long hike on the last day - and an early start but there is a bus from Hongu to the hot spring town (yuminome onsen) which made life easy. I think I would have preferred to stay in Hongu on the last night of the trek.

Would recommend for a great hike in Japan

We really enjoyed this hike. Beautiful views, great accom, yummy food and onsen, you can't go wrong. We loved the remote feeling of the hike, but also how connected it was to the towns we passed through- and stopping for a cool drink (or cheeky beer) when passing through a town was half the fun. Our favourite accom was the Takahara rental house!

Truly a triumphant, beautiful, meaningful hike. I did this by myself and I felt safe and capable the whole way. If you're a reasonably fit person this hike is strenuous but you'll be fine. Highly recommend walking sticks (just bamboo ones they sell at the start will do). Experience of a lifetime. Just do it :)

Overall beautiful but harder than expected

The track is incredible and not that hard if you're well prepared each day. The only thing for me which was that because my feet started bleeding and hurting on the last day due my wet shoes I decided to take the 'short' route straight to Yunomine. I would recommend also putting a sign with a height graph at the split from the kumano track. Because it's a very steep climb and a very steep descent and if, like me, you didn't get a warning and descide to take the route because it's 'shorter', it isn't the best idea because your feet will hurt more than if you would've taking the longer route which is pretty much straight with not many inclines. But overall, it was a beautiful experience and I'll certainly come back to the area!

Magical days in sacred mountains

These were magical days in the sacred mountains of the Kii Peninsula. Stunningly beautiful forest tracks and wonderful views. The journey was tough at times, with torrential rain on day 2 which turned the paths into gushing rivers. Day 3 definetely the hardest with two mountain passes to climb with sore legs. The accomodation each night was exquisite, probably the best food I've eaten in Japan, the world, and beautiful, simple Japanese style rooms. Peaceful, spiritual and natural. I will come back in another 20 years, if not before.

serene and peaceful in the forest

I like the peaceful of the forest and because I did individual trek alone I could hear the sound of the forest, the birds chirping and wind and trees and saw many beatiful buterflies, which you couldn't hear and see in the city! The trek is moderately easier and with a good signs provided for individual trekker. Each important location has information about it. During my trek I only met less then 4 people in the forest. In general, it was a nice trek and as a woman doing it alone I felt save.

A good workout

Not that this trek is a real cardio workout (unless if you do it running), but you are going across mountains. The paths are very well kept and they are never treacherous, but they can be quite steep. We enjoyed it thoroughly, but we found ourselves laughing many times just looking at the path ahead of us. It seems like we were climbing all the way to heaven. We did not encounter many impressive temples on the way, but we very much enjoyed the peace, the trees, and the pristine streams as we walked in silence.

Lucky us, we had a fairytale hike under the snow!

I didn't think it was supposed to snow on the Kumano Kodo, but it did for us, and it gave this spiritual walk an even greater dimension. It was very interesting to read the Kumano Dodo audio book at the same time as we did the walk. There are many explanations along the way, which are invaluable for non Buddhist foreigners like we are. It is well marked, scenic. One thing people who want to do the walk should be aware of: it goes in and out of small villages, so just it is not just a walk in the wilderness. The hike is not hard, it was only hard for us because we ended up knee-deep in the snow in some parts.

The highlight of our trip!!

We had so much fun! We love hiking and found that this was a great way to explore Japan. The trail is the best marked trail we've ever experienced and I particularly enjoyed the explanations you can read along the way. Our journey even included one day when it poured rain. Even this was fun! The rain brought out all types of reptiles and little crabs. We saw 8 snakes, 7 lizards, 2 frogs and a toad. These were only a few of the fun surprises we encountered. It was a truly wonderful experience. The itinerary provided was spot on. The bus and train schedules were particularly useful and took out a lot of the guess work to get to and from the trail.

Very nice trail !

I had some issues booking my rooms as I was close from the booking date. I also received all Kumano Kodo emails as spam mail. You should make a notice in your booking process that it is a possibility, I think I would have been more careful if it had been the case. Otherwise, the tail is amazing. Very good maintenance of the installations, and toilets at a good distance, so we can use them when needed. Very positive experience overall. I did this trail in two days.

We thoroughly enjoyed the challenging trek. The itinerary was easy to follow with good accommodation and the luggage shuttle service was invaluable. The detour on the third was more challenging than expected, but we did the entire trek on the third day. We encountered a number of snakes on the second and third day and only become aware of the venomous snakes by sign posts on last day, a warning would be advised at beginning of trek.

Very memorable hiking experience

Following Nakahechi Itinerary 1 made for a nice pace for the hike. The hiking took me two hours the afternoon of the first day from Takijiri to Takahara, five hours the second day to the Nonaka area (plus a lunch break), and less than seven hours the third day to Hongu (plus a lunch break). On the third day I decided to hike one more hour from Hongu to Yunomine rather than take the bus (one of the steepest parts of the trail, but I enjoyed it). I am in moderately good shape and hike a few times a year in the Pacific NW of the US. The hike is long and a good workout, but really not that bad if you are used to elevation gain. Hiking poles, good shoes, and bug spray were helpful to have. Highly recommend the experience. The highlight is staying in such pleasant guesthouses each evening and seeing the little agricultural towns. The views are also great, and I liked meeting a few Japanese hikers. Only saw a few people each day, and was lucky to have great weather with no rain in early June.

Thank you

I had a wonderful experience walking the Kumano Kudo and this service really made it all the more easier booking accommodation in advance and having everything ready when I arrived exhausted to each town. I'm so glad I used Kumano travel as I planned to just walk and hope for the best but it really did make all the difference having an address to go to and a bed ready for me with no stress. Often accommodation just look like houses so you could walk past and miss it if you don't book ahead and then you'll have no idea where to go to get a room. Thank you so much.

Great 2.5 days hike. Highly recommended.

We had a great time doing the 2.5days itinerary. We went through beautiful forest and landscapes, and enjoyed it greatly even though we did most of it under the rain! It simply made the warm welcome we received from our hosts every night feel even better. The trail is easy to follow, with adequate shelter and rest stop along the way. I think the itinerary is well planned, the distances are manageable for a wide range of speed (we aren't particularly fast walkers were always able to arrive by mid/end afternoon (dinner is usually served at 6pm). We wish we had had more time and could have taken the 5 day hike. We may come back do it in the future if the occasion arises.

Nachi was great. A bit out of the way but well worth it. There was a bit of confusion on getting there. I didn't see a train to Nachi at the first station. Also, the stop where we were supposed to transfer buses had a different name than what we were told so we missed that, followed it to the end of the line, and transferred (at which point we missed the first connecting bus). So please fine tune the instructions for others.

Wonderful trip

The trip was great, highlight of our time in Japan. Everything was well planned, kumano travel made this incredibly easy and affordable. The hike was gorgeous and it was nice to see a rural side of Japan that most visitors don't make time to see. Everything was clearly marked, including the detour (which didn't feel like we were missing anything, the views were incredible). It was definitely challenging but invigorating for two young people in pretty good shape. We did get extremely lucky in that we missed the rain while walking except for one brief time. One thing that would have been nice to know - very important to get out early on day 3. We were walking around 8 am, got to the end of the walk around 5 pm, took some time to explore the temple and gate, and missed a bus and would have had to wait for 2-3 more hours for the next one or walk an extra hour (there were no taxis), were it not for a helpful security guard and the (closed) tourist information center, where somebody very generously volunteered to drive us. The schedule is serious when it says the time of the buses and trains that you should take.

So so

Day 3 is great for sure. Had I known, I would not have done day 1 other than for the stay (not really remote in nature) and day 2 - only the morning is worth it. Hence my mixed feelings

Great trek

This was a great three night walk. 2 hours on the first day, 5.5 on the second and 9 on the third. The guide suggests that the 3rd day, though much greater distance, can be done in a similar time to the second day - this is not true. Allow yourself 1.5 x the time taken on the second day. Great onsen all along the route. Make sure you get to the temple before dark.

Excellent short trek

Enjoyed all aspects of this trek. Although it was challenging in some parts, even novice hikers like us could negotiate the terrain. Loved the feeling of walking along a trail with so much history. The views through the mountains and small communities were beautiful throughout. The people we encountered everywhere were very friendly and welcoming.

Kumano Kodo Trek

We had a wonderful 4 days. Everything worked out incredibly well. It was extremely helpful when we first arrived at Kii-Tanabe Station to be able to speak to the young lady in the Travel Office. She spoke good English and provided us with detailed maps of each stopping point so that we could easily find the hotels. She also gave us a map of the trek itself and, to our delight, a card for collecting stamps from the shrines along the route. The same card can be used for the Santiago Trek in Spain! The trek itself was wonderful. Walking through the trees in the dappled sunlight was magical. Seeing the shrines and reading about their history was very interesting. Some parts were quite tough (especially the detour) but all manageable. We were impressed to find several quite elderly Japanese ladies springing along the paths! I think it would be helpful to advise people to bring trekking poles (we had to improvise with a branch) and ankle support boots. In addition to enjoying the woodland we also saw quite a few birds and animals - including a snake!

A great option for a taste of rural Japan

Though the trail is not through pristine wilderness, it is nevertheless very enjoyable. I walked for hours at a time through the forest without seeing another soul, so it was very peaceful. The little shrines dotted along the trail adds a character to the place that you don't find elsewhere and the accommodation options are excellent. Walking only as far as Takohara on the first day (2 hours) is recommended. i ran into other walkers who went much further and wished they had stopped earlier. Although coming to the trailheads intersecting with the roads felt a bit strange after hours of peaceful forest meandering, at the same time the ability to access the bus network is a blessing. In my case i had hurt my knee pre-trip and was able to cut out the hardest part of my trek (part of day 3) and still do some walking and enjoy the trip anyway. I was blessed with perfect weather for the whole walk, so got to enjoy all the best views. Buses are reliable and though the drivers i struck didn't speak English, they were clearly accustomed to foreign visitors and were patient and accommodating. The level and amount of information available from Kumano Travel/the tourist information centre is incredibly useful and i think the best i've come across from a single area in all my years traveling. All together, a very pleasant few days away and a great respite from the cities.

Everything we wanted it to be and more.

Great scenery, easy to find the way, real sense of discovering an off the beaten track Japan... we loved it. I was slightly concerned that the weather would be challenging in Feb but we found it a perfect temperature for walking- we had the odd flurry of snow but this just made the mountains look more beautiful. Especial thanks to the helpful ladies in the Tourist information in Tanabe who helped us to get to Takijiri after we missed the bus due to the driver stopping at the wrong stop! Everything was very easy, from booking the trip online to downloading maps and finding transport- well done kumano travel for making this amazing part of Japan very accessible.

Good trek

This was a good three day trek. Honestly though, I probably could have walked a bit farther on the first day, but it was still a good time. The hike was not hard, especially on the first two days. The map provided was very accurate with the time-frames it provided. The first two days were easy, but I found that I did, indeed, hike the amount of time that the map estimated for each day. On the third day, I think i was a little bit faster, but the third day is a bit harder in the morning. This is due to the 500 and 400 meter uphill hikes during the first few hours of the hike. Still, it was good, although I did eat quite a few spider webs. :D

A great walk in the woods

The walk has a very tough last day which for us was cut helpfully short thanks to a lift but the first two days are pretty easy. It can be a little dull because so much is in the woods - most of which is commercial forestry. But there is always a snake or a mushroom to offer interest and of course the shrines that mark the way. The path is excellent and the signposting is perfect. It would be best in spring when it's cooler or autumn when colours of the trees would be more varied but we really enjoyed the sense of getting right into the Japanese countryside and the sense of achievement at doing the pilgrimage. Every Japanese we mentioned it thereafter was very impressed!

The highlight of our 2 week trip to Japan

My college aged son and I did this hike together after spending several days in Tokyo, Naoshima, Kyoto and Nara. It was really one of the highlights of our trip and I would love to return someday with other friends and loved ones and share the experience. I would warn those who are considering doing this hike that this is not easy hiking. The terrain is steep and mountainous and you will be on your own for most of the hike. You will not see many other people except in towns and at the major shrines. My son and I are both fit, marathon runners and we carried very light day packs, and even so, we were very tired at the end of days 2 and 3. Day 1 was short but the trail was extremely steep. The difficulty of the hike was part of the allure for us. We wanted something challenging and we found it. I think it adds to the spiritual dimension of the experience. On the hike, you will mostly be alone with your companions. The mountain and forest are gorgeous. The play of light through the trees and mist is amazing and other worldly. You will encounter dozens of small oji shrines along the way - we always stopped and gave small offerings and spent a few minutes in quiet contemplation. The trail itself is extremely well marked - not only are there signs everywhere you need them saying 'kumano kodo' - there are also signs saying 'not kumano' where the path branches. It would be really really difficult to stray from the proper path. After visiting the grand shrine at Hongu and staying at Yunomine, we went on to visit the other 2 grand shrines and Shingu and Nachi. I would highly recommend doing this if you have time, especially the shrine at Nachi where you will see an amazing waterfall and pagoda as well. The travel agency or website can assist you if you want to visit the other 2 shrines - you can hike, travel by boat and bus and train, or other combinations. We chose to go by boat and then train. To summarize, this was one of the highlights of our trip to Japan - totally different from our urban experiences. It is a trip you will remember for a lifetime. But please come prepared and in excellent physical condition. The trip we did was not easy but was wonderful. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did if you decide to ever hike it.

Terrific experience

We very much enjoyed the hike, which offered spectacular scenery, a variety of terrain and great lodgings. The itinerary was good, with each day progressively more difficult. Although we are experienced hikers, we found the rough terrain, slippery conditions and constant climbs and descents made for a more challenging walk than we had expected. It was certainly tough on the knees and ankles. All the information was provided and the maps were clear. We had no trouble finding the trains, buses or accommodations. The luggage service, though pricey was punctual and an extremely useful thing to have on this kind of a trip. Overall, an excellent experience and one that I would recommend.

It was harder than I expected. I think the last day of walkng should have been broken up into 2 days. I probably would not have made it!. I caught a bus half way. It would have been useful to be told there was an information counter at Kii Tanabe with advice. They were good when a bookshop I asked for maps rang them and told me. I think I needed more information when I was in Australia and would have liked to have known this.

Awesome hike with a few challenges along the way

General: Awesome hiking with excellent trails. The signage along the route is very clear, you can not get lost and therefore there is no need for a guide - even if you do not speak one word of Japanese. The trail provides great variation in landscape, from tall forests to dens jungle feel and stone steps to leaf covered dirt trails. Greatly enjoyed and would recommend! Day 1: Provided itineraries and maps are spot on. It's a short walk but do not underestimate it. The climbs are pretty steep for a warm up. Day 2: Perfect length for a day hike. Offers some challenges along the way but is very doable. Excellent views in the morning! Day 3: Long challenging day to get all the way to Yunomine Onsen from Nonaka. Along the way (after 2/3rds of the way) we noticed the Akagi-Goe shortcut to Yunomine Onsen. After some debate we chose to skip Hongu and go straight for Yunomine Onsen. It would be nice if this shortcut was mentioned by the organisation - at least as 'an option'. The Akagi-Goe was a welcome shortcut for us. Do not underestimate the 3rd day :) Maybe: More restpoints along the trails would be nice, the number of benches are now extremely limited.

Enjoyable hiking with lots of baths and food!

This was a very enjoyable and relatively easy 3 day hike. The first day was very short but that's worth it to stay at Takahara and experience the lovely food there. For the 3rd day, I substituted the long 24k route (some of which was on the road and part involved a detour) with the 18k or so loop from Yunomine by the Agaki-goe and Dainchi-goe routes. This was a hilly but very enjoyable hike. The tourist office at Tanabe is just brilliant - so helpful and were able to help with bus timetables and luggage transfer to Koyasan. They provide a fantastic service. All in all a highly recommended experience!

Brilliant trek

This trek was amazing- I would highly recommend it to anyone who is keen. Really worth the effort of booking, and was the highlight of our trip to Japan. Scenery was amazing, and really surprising there wasn't very many people at all on the trail. Guest houses were spot on, and host very friendly. Would highly recommend staying at the Organic Hotel - standout service and hospitality. Definitely helps to be fairly fit (third day we covered around 26km through hills), as there is some solid walking - although I did note there was some options to catch a bus if you weren't up to it.

Enjoyable trek- very recommended

The 2 day trek we did from Takijiri oji to Hongu Taisha was one of the highlights of our trip to Japan. This was not a very easy trek, as you need to walk a lot, especially on the second day. Some ascents were a little challenging, but the scenery and experience are well worth it. Perhaps buses should run more frequently in the evening from Hungu Taisha to Yunomine Onsen. We almost missed the bus, and the next one would have been an hour and a half later.

Excellent

We were very grateful to have found Kumano travel. It was difficult to plan a multiday hike in Japan and it was excellent to find an English travel company. Everything was so well planned we felt very confident and comfortable.

highly recommend this hike!

Highly recommmend this hike to everyone. On the third day recommend walking from Chikatsuyu to Hongu (so you can see Hongu Taisha) then taking bus to Yunomine Onsen. There is a bus that leaves Hongu around 5pm so need to be in Hongu by that time (last bus is at 7pm). Even with this bus its a long day of hiking - at least 20k and lots of elevation gain/loss. But highly worth it in the end!!!

Kumano Kodo Trek Plan 1 - 4 days

The 4- day Kumano Kodo Trek was the highlight of our three week Japan holiday. To be treading the ancient, World Heritage pilgrimage path was a true delight. We especially liked the last few hours walking across the ridge top then into the charming village of Yunomine Onsen. The track was very well sign-posted. Next time we'll do a longer walk and spend more time in the region.

Absolutely Breathtaking! Unreal!

This hike was unbelievable! The first day is much shorter than I expected but you'll have plenty of good walking. The forest is beautiful and it was nice to have a shorter day because we got completely rained out. In short, the hike is challenging enough but most anyone can do it. The theme of the whole thing is ""oh yay! a hill"" be prepared for a lot of uphill.

Our group of 4 was so happy that we chose to walk the kumano kodo trail! After living here for over a year, this was one of my favorite experiences. The scenery was beautiful, breathtaking, and diverse. All of the people we met were lovely and helpful and went out of their way to make us feel welcome.

We also enjoyed the physical challenge of the walk. Heartily recommend this to anyone. We found the service through the Kumano Travel Community Reseration Service of the highest standard. Unforgettable experience, not for the faint hearted!

This route is perfect for the fit, athletic and experienced hiker. It starts off very easy and increases double fold, then triple fold on it's challenge everyday. I had a wonderful first two days immersed in nature. My last day however was a small disaster. I did the 24km hike in the rain. Not recommended! Be very careful of the weather turning. After 7 hrs walking I was soaked to the bone and freezing, even with all my rain gear. But thanks to the friendly people of Hosshinmon, I made it safely to Hongu. I will never forget this amazing experience in Japan.

We had a full program whilst travelling through Japan. But the Kumano Kodo was a unexpected treat. I would advise every visitor to go on this hike and spiritual experience. It is well sign-posted. And the hospitality at the ryokans and minshukus is great.

The beginning of our trek was delayed due to a typhoon and we were stranded in Osaka. However, Brad helped us so much. he advised us to head down the next day and met us at the station with maps/plans etc. of how we could 'catch up' from our missed day. He bought our bus tickets and got us on the bus quickly and then refunded our missed night almost immediately. Thanks so much!

 Detailed Itinerary

BEFORE YOUR VISIT

  • PREPARATION

Preparation and planning is the key to a safe trek in the sacred Kumano mountains.

Choose a route that you have adequate experience and physical strength to safely complete.

Wear appropriate clothing and footwear, and carry necessary gear.

NOTE: Details sometimes change, especially bus schedules, so please double-check times before your trip.  If you notice something incorrect, please let us know. Thank you!

  • WHEN TO VISIT

The Nakahechi route is open year round.

Summer can be hot and humid, and winter has a slight possibility of snow at higher elevations (from end of December to end of February) although it usually melts shortly it falls. The winter months have shorter daylight hours.

Japanese national holidays and long-weekends can be busy so best to avoid (especially golden week in the beginning of May and Obon mid-August).

NOTE: It is often best to come mid-week as capacity is limited in smaller villages along the trail.

  • RESOURCES

There are many useful resources related to the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes.  Please use these to make the most of your trip.

Maps and Official Guide Book, are available onsite in Tanabe.  Online “Pilgrim Packs” including these materials can be mailed in advance.

DAY 1

Overnight: Takahara

  • DAY 1 OVERVIEW

DAY ONE is a transfer to the trailhead at Takijiri-oji by train and bus, followed by a shorter but steep walk on the Kumano Kodo to the Takahara Settlement.

NOTE: The Kumano Kodo is a mountain trail, therefore walking times vary greatly depending on weather, season, personal experience, and fitness.  Please plan accordingly for a safe walk, as many people underestimate the difficulty of the terrain.

     Depart: 8:58 Shin-Osaka
      Depart: 9:19 Tennoji

      Arrive: 11:21 Kii-Tanabe

The JR train travels down the west coast of the Kii peninsula.

Watch for terraced orange and ume orchards along the way.

TIP: Sit on the right hand side of the train for the best views.
  • LUGGAGE SHUTTLE

  • VISIT TAKIJIRI-OJI

Takijiri-oji is one of the main trailheads of the Nakahechi route.

There were once extensive halls, a bath house, lodgings for pilgrims, and residences for priests, priestesses and monks in the area.

This is a short but steep uphill walk from Takijiri to the ridge top settlement of Takahara.  The trailhead is located behind the Takijiri-oji shrine pavilion.

    Kumano Kodo Map

  • VISIT TAKAHARA

Takahara is a small settlement on a ridgeline with panoramic views of the Hatenashi mountain range.

It is the site of the mystical Takahara Kumano-jinja shrine, one of the oldest buildings along this section of the pilgrimage route. The shrine grounds are home to giant camphor trees, over 800 years old!

Takahara is known as "Kiri-no-Sato" (Village in the Mist) because the scenic vistas are often blanketed with mist. The valley below dramatically fills with fog, creating a beautiful sea of clouds.

  • OVERNIGHT IN TAKAHARA

There are a few options in Takahara including the Kiri-no-Sato Takahara Lodge and smaller facilities, such as rental houses.

  • WALK KUMANO KODO - TAKAHARA TO TSUGIZAKURA-OJI

     Distance: ~13 km
     Time: 6~8 hr
     Elevation Gain: ~830 m
     Elevation Loss: ~650 m

This walk continues into the forested mountains east of Takahara climbing up and over ridges into the next watershed, descending into the village of Chikatsuyu.

The Nonaka area is another ~3 km further along the trail on an old highway.

NOTE: The Michi-no-Eki rest area near numbered signpost 23 sells drinks, snacks, and simple meals.

    Kumano Kodo Map

  • LUNCH

Picnic lunch along the trail or at Michi-no-Eki rest area.

  • VISIT CHIKATSUYU

The village after Takahara is Chikatsuyu where the clear Hiki-gawa river runs through the valley.

    Pass through Chikatsuyu towards Tsugizakura-oji.

  • VISIT TSUGIZAKURA-OJI
