Beautiful Hiking, Well Organized
Kumano Travel did an awesome job putting together the itinerary and then organizing all the accommodation and luggage transfers. Went so easily and smoothly all we had to do was hike and enjoy. Amazing trip!
We had a fantastic time on our hike of the Kumano Kodo. The scenery was incredible, and we were lucky enough to have perfect weather the first week of December. Difficult but rewarding
The route was kind if difficult but it was worth it as the views were amazing. The rural landscape was breathtaking and it was fun to see all different types of towns and mountains. We were also able to see a deer!

Excellent hiking experience
This multi-day hiking trek was a great experience on a well maintained trail and the time I spent on the Kumano Kodo is one of my favourite trips to Japan. It was both a good physical challenge and a way to see a quieter part of Japan when visiting and staying in smaller settlements along the route. I would highly recommend this trek.

Fantastic experience

Great Experience
The booking experience was a bit overwhelming - so many options to digest for each accomodation, and understanding the bus transport details which affect each accomodation. But in the end, the website contained all the info I needed, you just need to be patient and read carefully and set aside enough time to really understand what it is saying. Then, during the actual trip, everything went according to plan - buses ran on time, accomodation was as advertised, and luggage transfers all worked perfectly.

Highlight of our trip to Japan
Beautiful trail, we were blessed with great weather until the last day, where it poured all day :-). The cultural and historical significance, the friendly locals, the amazing food and onsens along the trail along with incredible views of this wild and sacred part of Japan are what makes this trail unforgettable. I recommend it to anyone wanting to learn about Japan's ancient traditions and history and to spend some quiet, mindful moments in nature.

Kumano Kodo Trek
The trek was a fascinating historical trail through the forests and mountains of the Kii Peninsula. It was physically demanding, but supported by excellent organisation, very good information and maps, a great guide (for one of the four days) and superb maintenance and conservation of the pathways. To be recommended!
Our only challenge was booking during office hours which are in the middle of the UK night. Oh and we found fewer water refill stops than we'd have liked.

A straightforward itinerary on the Kumano Kodo
This itinerary was wonderful. I admit, when I was first trying to figure it out, it was somewhat confusing. But once I was on the Kumano Kodo, it made more sense, especially the option to bus. I opted for a bus between Nonaka and Hongu Shrine, there was a ton of rain that day, and I wanted to be able to spend time at the shrine and also at Yunomine Onsen. The highlight was staying at guesthouses with hosts. I would do that more than local hotels if you can. However, Ryokan Adumaya in Yunomine Onsen was really special. I would have also loved to experience Kawazyu, but that will have to happen next time!

July Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage
The Kumano Kodo has been one of the most interesting experiences hiking that I have ever had. This is not a hike with many sweeping views from mountain tops, but a serene adventure through the forest. It is important to keep an eye out for small magical moments along the way. Most of my time was spent quietly walking through the trees and finding a small shrine with offerings that you could have easily missed or stopping at tea house remains and thinking about who might have walked these steps lifetimes ago. Think trip has inspired me to do more pilgrimage hikes, and maybe even a different route of the Kumano Kodo!
I did not find that the difficulty ratings matched my personal hiking experience. The first half day hike to Takahara felt like more of a level 3+ difficulty, it was not a far hike but you go straight up for a time at the beginning and it’s a little demoralizing way to start the adventure, where as the day 5 hike with the “body breaking slope” was long but felt more like a 3 to me personally. It was my favorite section!
Yes July is extremely hot and humid but was totally doable with the shaded trails, lots of water and electrolyte drinks.
**For heavily tattooed pilgrims**
I have a lot of very large and obvious tattoos on my legs and back along with a full sleeve and half sleeve. This was not a problem anywhere I stayed. I was allowed to use the onsen and everyone, even those who were not my hosts and just worked in the area, were very kind and interested in talking to me about them. It was obviously off season and the places I stayed had very few or zero other guests, so I don’t know if that would change during high season with very busy onsen.

Fantastic experience
Incredible hike through the forested mountains in Japan. It was physically challenging, spiritually rewarding and a little bit magical. Wonderful experience both for hiking and learning the Japanese culture
It is one of the best hiking experience I have had so far. The hiking routes are nicely covered and the stamp collection makes the whole trip a great fun. Also learned a lot about Kumano's history and culture by reading the posts along the way. Hotels are very nice and clean and offer delicious Japanese food. I particularly enjoyed the onsen experience after a hard walk in the daytime. I would strongly recommend this hiking route and the whole experience.

Walking Nakahechi route was a mystical and unforgettable experience! So much physical as it is spiritual… The woods are magical and the trail is beautiful in every turn. Very well organised but trek a bit boring
The nature is beautiful but lacks diversity. Every day is more or less the same in terms of views/paths/trees/shrines... i believe that 3 days are enough to get a taste of what it is (if you are not bent on completing the trek fully). The best temples by far are Kumano Hongu Taisha (not exactly on the path) and Kumano Nachi Taisha. Do not miss them!

I finished 4.5 days walking in April. Kumano Travel arranged my accommodations and I am very happy with everything. This is definitely one of the best hiking I even done. The meals provided by guesthouses are definitely the highlight of the walk. I am looking forward to doing this again next year.

Fantastic trek thru mystical forests and small villages
We loved this route, which leads mostly thru beautiful and mystic forests with lots of shrines on the way. At times we did not see anybody else on the trail for an hour or so. The daily hiking was quite challenging, but very rewarding.

Beautiful hike
Would definitely recommend the Kumano Kodo hike. It is challenging but well worth it. Kumano Travel made it easy to book all of our accommodations and luggage transfers. Ordering meals ahead of time made things easier since few places to eat along the trail.

Fantastic trip!
We had an amazing time on the Kumano Kodo trip! Mono travel did a great job arranging our five nights of accommodations. Each home stay was a highlight for us. The food was incredible, true abundant, and delicious feasts. We felt so lucky to be able to stay in Yunomine onsen, but the accommodation there was a bit tired and the food not up to par. Each of the other places exceeded our expectations. The hiking was beautiful and interesting and most days was just the right amount of it. The last day as expected was a big day but probably the most beautiful as well. Such a great feeling to complete the whole trek. We would definitely recommend it for avid hikers, and the cultural immersion was a real bonus. Thanks again Kumano travel!

Amazing hike
We did this the five day Nakahechi route in March 2025. It was a wonderful hike and very special time together as a family. Gorgeous, well-marked, well maintained, not crowded like other famous trails. Our nine year old really enjoyed it too, and did not find it too challenging. It was very special to stay at the guest houses along the way and get a feel for the countryside of Japan. We would love to do it again in the future.

Manageable and enjoyable with good training
Solo hiked in early winter and stayed in guesthouses. Washroom and food is plenty along the trail, and daily hike durations are overestimated for the trained/seasoned hiker. The mountain and forest views are beautiful this time of the year, with cool weather and less bugs/animals present during the day.

Very much a challange but worth it.
Very hot and humid weather in October for our group. Day 1 was as steep as they warn and the accommodation was very welcome at the end. We carried rain gear but no point wearing it as it just resulted in us stewing in our own sweat as it just insulated us and it was cooler to walk in the rain. Changed plans due to very heavy rain and used the buses to skip a section. Take plenty of coin so you have the correct change for the buses which will make things quicker. Google map was very accurate for timing and costs. Google translate was essential to help read signs. All hosts were very helpful with directions and advice. Would highly recommend having a rest day in the middle and taking the time to enjoy the small townships.

An memorable hiking experience
The trail is stunning and exceptionally well-marked, making navigation a breeze. Along the route, you’ll find plenty of modern amenities, including clean restrooms and well-maintained rest areas, ensuring a comfortable hiking experience. A visit to the legendary Three Taishas is an absolute must, offering a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the region. A really great experience
I am very glad that I made time in my Japan itinerary to walk the Kumano Kodo. I had previously walked the Camino de Santiago and this was a different and unique experience. This itinerary itself has a lot of steep inclines and descents so it can be physically challenging at times but worth it. The mountains and forests are very beautiful and I enjoyed all the tiny villages that I stayed in along the way. The food and onsens were great and I appreciated being able to see rural life. I did a dual pilgrim ceremony at Kumano Hongu Taisha which was special, and I met lovely pilgrims from all over. This is a great walk for contemplation and the trail was never really crowded. I would recommend staying an extra night in Tanabe and Nachikatsuura if you can to experience life in 'bigger' cities in Wakayama. Nachikatsuura also is famous for tuna and onsens if you want a day to relax after finishing your walk.

It was great for experiencing the nature and culture of japan. We met a lot of very kind and nice people on the way, but it was not too crowded. Amazing! Highly recommended
The route for each day is well planned, and the maps are so useful. The paths are all well marked and we enjoyed the various foliage and vegetation in every route. I feel privileged to have experienced this trek and it would remain one of my most enjoyable active holiday ever. The KK trek includes not just beautiful nature but its full with cultural learnings of the shrines, coupled with the warm Japanese hospitality and the amazing food makes other multi-days hiking trips in the world pales in comparison.

Great experience! Beautiful trek and great organization from Kumano Travel
My husband and I hiked the Nakahechi route in late October and booked all accomodations (with no luggage transfer) with Kumano Travel in April. We received confirmations in a timely manner and all the logistics worked very well. The only confusing thing is that it was not clear if an accommodation was fully booked or not open to reservations yet when greyed out on the website, so it was not clear if we needed to wait more time or not. But everything worked perfectly well!

Great insight to culture, food and Japanese people
Highlites for me were the food at small inns owned by kind Japanese people. A glimpse into rural japan. If you are Looking for big views on this hike you dont get that. You get the peace and quiet and beautiful cultural shrines of forests, staircases and the history of a pilgrimage path. Dont sweat the difficulty intermediate but bring poles as it can get slippery.

We enjoyed our walks through the beautiful landscape. Some places we found disintegrated and would recommend that you walk through with open eyes and you will find this spots and remove them.

One of the most meaningful travel experiences of our lives
Two weeks later, the Kumano Kodo is still on our minds, and I doubt it ever won't be again. What an incredible experience. The trek was rewarding and spiritually restorative, a welcome respite from our day-to-day lives in the city. We were pleasantly surprised at how easy we (a pair of early thirty-somethings) found the five straight days of hiking. Any moderately fit person could do this: just put one foot in front of the other and you’ll get there.
Our favorite part, surprisingly, was not the forest bathing but the little sparks of civilization along the way. Every time we descended from the trees and into a mountain village it was like stepping out of time. It was both beautiful (if a bit melancholic) to see these long-neglected places be reclaimed by the forest, and inspiring to see them begin to be rejuvenated by a younger generation that is moving in and breathing new life into the region.
The Kumano Kodo felt like a truly authentic travel experience, of the kind that is increasingly difficult to find in the Instagram age. Every step of the way, we met friendly people who were proud of the homes and businesses that they’d built, and were excited to offer comfort and accommodation to weary hikers.

A terrific experience
Booked our 5 day, 6 night Kumano Kodo walk with Kumano travel - a fabulous time was had. The accomodation options were great excellent with character filled houses and caring and engaged hosts. Most of all, the meals each and every day were a real highlight - full of a vast range of Japanese treats, all delicious. The website provides great comms and the descriptions are all very accurate.

Trek was very clearly marked, no need for a local guide, good walk but not very scenic
Went in Sep hoping for cooler weather but it was really humid and warm, average weather was 31-33 degrees but the foliage provided good shelter. We encountered many bees in the trail. We planned with Kumano Travel, the website is not very user friendly and not intuitive, instructions were unclear and had to utilise the chat function on many instances. Tip: when using the chat function, ask one question at a time. Noticed that when 2 or more questions were asked, only 1 question would be addressed.

Very good trip overall, even on rainy days it was scenic and enjoyable. All the hosts were amazing and friendly. Great trek overall, with some minor problems
The trek was wonderful, following the recommended 6 day route despite the impending typhoon which caused some uncertainty around which accommodations would be available still. Accommodations were generally very good, and luggage transfer was perfect.
Leeches were prevalent only in one area of the route; if this is typically true it would be great to better call that out.

What a wonderful way to explore this beautiful area in Japan. The trek itself is not too difficult, although we had to climb and descend a lot, and it was hot and humid (in August). We enjoyed the stay at the different typical Japanese accommodations, and the ineens after the walking. The Japanese meals were delicious and prepared with much care. We really had a great week thanks to Kumano Travel who organized this perfectly for us.

Summer on the Kumano Kodo
The path was hard work but rewarding. We met friendly locals and travellers. Kumano Travel was excellent by contacting me on WhatsApp when our train was delayed even though it was a public holiday - as a result our luggage could be collected. If you are walking in summer make sure you stay hydrated. Swimming in the Kumano River and local steams was a highlight. We booked at short notice so our accommodation options were limited.

Highlight of my 3 weeks in Japan - couldn't recommend more
My 6 day trek on the Kumano Kodo was by far the highlight of my trip to Japan. The nature was stunning, and the accommodations were an unexpected highlight too - the small family-run guesthouses in particular were an absolute treat, with incredible hospitality and delicious food.

Don't underestimate the trail
This was a fantastic trip in every way, but I didn't realize the degree of difficulty of certain aspects of the trail. Be prepared for some tough hiking, and don't hesitate to include some recovery days!

Incredible experience
I am so glad we undertook this adventure. The hosts were amazing, so welcoming and the food was excellent. The trail is well marked and so easy to travel. Wonderful trek with excellent accomondation and food

A beautiful part of Japan, highly recommend
The hike itself is well sign posted and has good facilities. There are parts where there aren’t enough toilets such as from Nonaka to Hongu.
We found three of the five nights of our accommodation to be exceptional and two nights below par.
Overall, we loved our time on the Kumano Kodo Trail and would recommend it to others.
The booking process was good and took care of our lodgings, food and luggage transfer so we could hike between towns with ease.
We will remember the walk and the people we met along the way fondly.

A wonderful experience
I loved every step of this enchanting 5 day hike. As much as it was challenging it was also very rewarding. We met only a handful of other hikers which made you feel one with the mountain and a greater sense of what others that walked before you had experienced, it was a wonderful time of reflection which I am thankful for. Planning and organising this hike took many hours, there is a lot of preparation required and an immense amount of information to take which at times was overwhelming, however, the outcome was flawless and seamless and I highly recommend. The time taken to plan was most definitely worth it.

Great Trek through ancient pilgrimage trail
Four of us completed the trek in 5 days. We found it challenging and steep but definitely doable if you are in shape and go when it is not too hot. The temperature in mid/late April was perfect and we didn't have any rain! The vending machines, bathrooms and lunches provided by the inns were great. It was nice to be in rural areas and meeting locals and staying in traditional accommodations. We learned a lot about the shrines and the pilgrimage.

A tough but very rewarding hike
This was truly a highlight of our trip to Japan. We consider ourselves avid day hikers and usually don’t use hiking poles, but we bought some in town last minute before this trek and we are SO GLAD we did. We ran into other hikers who didn’t have poles but they managed to buy some in the towns as the days went on, because they were so necessary. We also did the trek in trail runners, but I would wear proper hiking boots with ankle support if I did it again. Also, proper rain gear is a must in April - it only rained one day, but we were DRENCHED at the end!
This will be a tough excursion but very worth it. Bring plenty of water, start early, and maybe collect the shrine stamps! We also carried our bags everyday but if I did it again I would just forward our luggage. All in all, a definite highlight of our trip to Japan, both due to the views and trails, but also the food and people we met along the way.

Amazing experience!
We were supposed to trek the Kumano Kodo in April of 2020. It was even more special to arrive after a four year delay. The trek was challenging with lots of steep terrain but the beauty of the landscape was so worth it.

outstanding adventure on the Kumano Kodo
My wife and I just completed the 5 day Nakahechi trek after having completed the Camino Frances last fall to become 'dual' pilgrims. We used Kumano Travel to help set up and manage the trip. I found the website and process helpful and was able to secure lodging, meals, luggage transfer as well as other activities to our satisfaction. having just recently completed the trek I am very happy to report everything went exactly as planned (expect maybe the weather one day, haha) and had an adventure of a lifetime. The hike of a lifetime
Words can't really describe how much of an experience this hike was. Every day something totally new, with both the man-made structures and the nature being completely out of this world. The hotel booking was done very well (thanks to the team here) and the people you meet along the way were all so kind and open. I highly recommend taking time to do both sides of the main loop, as the hot springs town is worth the trip. The only downside was that it had to end at some point. Months later I still think about this constantly and one day I hope to come back.

The whole 6 days was fantastic! Fantastic ancient trail
We took 6 days to walk/ride across the trail. Well organised, with great signage. Able to change our plans easily due to the weather. The tourist office in Hongu was especially helpful and knowledgeable.

Unique travel experience
I completed this trek starting December 26 and ending on December 31. I got lucky with weather and it was mildly cool and generally sunny on most days, although it is a bit cooler when you're in the woods versus out in the sun! The booking process through Kumano Travel was seamless and easy, it took me just an hour or two to figure out the system and submit my reservation requests. The agency responded to my request in a timely manner (I booked only one month in advance, on November 24!)
The trek is a unique travel experience that I would recommend to anyone interested in having a more culturally immersive experience, as well as get some nature exposure! I do not speak Japanese, although I did learn a couple phrases to use during my trip, but getting around was super easy despite my lack of language.

Warm couple, felt like a home stay, excellent meals.
The best experience we had staying in lodging along the trail. The couple received us with open arms and interacted with all the guests, so we got to know them and they got to know us. It felt like a real cultural exchange. The food was excellent: dinner & breakfast. Everything was home-cooked. They even agreed to offer us breakfast at 6am so we could get an early jump on our hike the next morning. Absolutely wonderful stay. After dinner, we all socialized. This is not just a business. The couple enjoy hosting.

Great autumn hike
We really enjoyed our late November hike of the Nakehetchi trail. While we found the hike physically challenging in some sections, the overall trip was excellent; great weather, beautiful scenery, comfortable accommodations, good local food, friendly people and meeting lots of interesting fellow travelers from all over the world.

Belle randonnée, belles rencontres et beaux paysages

AMAZING!
This trek is just amazing! I did it end of September 2023, the weather was perfect no rain at all. My only recommandation would be that on day 3, after visiting KUMANO HONGU TAISHA and OYUNOHARA, you should walk to YUNOMINE. Yes it's a long day (I did option 1) but I was able to walk it easily, and honnestly this part (OYUNOHARA to YONUMINE) was incredibly beautifull. And now I can say that I walk the whole way from TAKIJIRI-OJI to NACHI ;)

Absolutely superb hike through Japan
Wonderful route, super range of traditional minshuku's, exceptional experience, wonderful culture and nature. The sights sounds and people wonderful. Highly recommend this trip. The booking platform takes some time but works exceptionally well. Very helpful staff online, great tourist bureau personnel.

Brilliant trek
A great combination of natural areas and small traditional villages. Hot in late August but not unbearable. Trail easy to follow, in great shape though some sections a bit slippery in the rain. Highly recommend.

Beautiful way to experience the Kii Mountains knowing that you're following an ancient, well trodden path. Overall the walk was more challenging than I expected but a great experience. Only downside was the amount of operational forestry plantation the route now passes through - that was not expected.

Amazing experience
We loved the Kumano Kodo, what an incredible experience. Beautiful landscape and scenery and a glance into Japanese culture and Shinto Buddhism. We really enjoyed our home stays along the trail. The trail was very well marked and easy to follow and the hikes were moderately difficult.

A Walk in the Footsteps of Pilgrims
We hiked the Nakahechi route, which traces one of the main pilgrimage routes to the shrines at Kumano Hongu Taisha and Kumano Nachi Taisha, in early June. While we knew June was often rainy in the region, this year the rains were particularly early and heavy, making our trip quite soggy. That said the route was well signed and the support we received from Kumano Travel was stellar. We chose to substitute, at the last minute, several bus rides for hiking through the rain and everything worked perfectly. The many Ojis we passed were at times moving and always interesting. Recommended for reasonably experienced and in-shape hikers as there is significant elevation changes throughout the route.

Authentic experience of Japan
We just completed the kumano kodo a week ago. There were 3 adults, age 65, a couple and an extra friend. Every day was a surprise - in a good way. The trail was far more groomed than we had been expecting. Each lodging was completely unique from each other. We felt the whole community was looking out for the welfare and enjoyment of the hikers. We didn’t see many Japanese hikers on the trail but we did get to meet many locals in each village. The meals that were served to us were way beyond our expectations in terms of quality and quantity. I really can’t think of anything that could have been done better.

Tough but doable
Overall we found the trek to be no less than what we were expecting of a rugged mountianous trek, with the various gradient levels, particularly day 5, and the challenging weather (on day 5).
Our main motivation for doing this walk was to gain our dual pilgrim status, which is what we achieved.
We loved the pilgrimage aspect to it, shrines, temples, history, culture, and the day to day challenges. We will highly recommend this walk (and the organisation Kumano Travel).
I must add that I found the service of all the staff at Kumano Travel to be excellent. I must also make mention of Mako, who answered my numerous questions online prior to the walk with courteousness and patience and allowed me to plan confidently. We were lucky to also get to meet her when we arrived in Kii Tanabe.
Overall, a great experience….and one that we will never forget👍

Great few days on a beautiful trail
Appreciated the peace on the trail, the beautiful forest and the hills. Amazing food and so well organized for people with tricky dietary needs. No problems for a vegan coeliac! Amazing restorative hike
The Kumano Kodo is a challenging hike with many mountain passes in a single day but that’s precisely what I loved about it. The entire hike is in nature which provides for introspection, solitude, and fresh cleansing air. There are many sights to see during the hike and at every corner it seems there is something that could be picture worthy (a vista, a pretty bird, a Buddhist relic, a temple). Be aware that there are few places to stock up on snacks or food so hike with what you might need (this is very different from the Camino de Santiago) but there are some pilgrim rest centers and people along the trail are very kind.

Excellent hike, perfect for the mind, body and soul.
This hike is nothing short of incredible. No matter the weather, you are guaranteed to have an amazing time. The team at the info centre are very helpful and the hike is extremely well signposted, it is very hard to get lost. Each accommodation was varied and different, you get to meet and spend time with local people while also supporting local business. Finishing the trip in Katsuura is a real treat and the food is phenomenal through out.
I highly recommend buying the Kumano guide book, it adds a lot of extra meaning to the hike and allowed me to get so much more out of the experience. I also recommend to bring poles!

Wonderful hiking experience
My partner and I have been wanting to walk the Kumano Kodo for years and it lived up to our expectations! The trails were beautiful and varied, with mixed terrain and lovely scenery. The resources provided by Kumano Travel were helpful and interesting, and we learned a lot about the area and history of the pilgrimage. The minshuku we stayed in along the way were wonderful, as was the food. We are both vegetarian and everywhere we stayed catered for us with delicious meals. It's a hard walk. The distances aren't huge, but the elevation changes and uneven terrain make it very challenging. Look into walking poles. I found the time estimates for each section to be very accurate. The scenery is beautiful. Grab the Kumano Kodo map from the very helpful (and English friendly) visitor's center in Kii-Tanabe - they have the booklet to collect stamps and the maps very helpfully show elevations changes, if there's ever a paved road, where there's water, restrooms, food, etc. on the Kumano. If you plan on taking a bus at any point in the hike, double check bus times the day before (they can change). At Hongo Taisha - if you go up to the information desk at the Heritage center, and can show all of your stamps, they will sign off that you are a pilgrim.

Be prepared for bad weather and slippery stones
This was a tiring hike covering the full trail from Takijiri to Nachi. I found that it was crucial to have goals each evening or I'd have given up as the trekking itself becomes repetitive since you are almost always in the dense forest with few or no views. Staring at the stones, surrounded by the trees, the occasional shrine became a real highlight to boost motivation at the toughest times in the rain! Strongly recommend doing this once, maybe not a second time!

I was very happy with the service from Kumano Travel. It is very impressive that a full itinerary with accommodation options has been put together and can be coordinated centrally which made planning the trip and booking accommodation very easy.

Beautiful Kumano Kodo
We trekked the Kumano between February 28-March 3 2020. There were four of us: two parents a 14 year old and an 11 year old. We enjoyed the quiet trails, the guesthouses, the fantastic food and the beautiful trails. We hope that Japan is able to preserve this forested area and the shrines, as we did see a fair bit of forestry activity in the region.

First time pilgrim
The trail was well marked and each of the days was relatively comfortable in the end. I was relatively fit and had hiking poles just in case. It was lovely and peaceful when I went (in February) and beautiful seeing all the shrines and reading about the history along the trail. I would highly recommend this to anyone who likes the outdoors and a bit of exercise, a very rewarding trip overall! The stays at local guest houses was definitely one of the highlights here - so brush up on your Japanese!

Kumano is one of the most beautiful experiences I have ever had. I did the 6 day initiary just like suggested on the homepage and had an amazing time. Thank you so much for your hard work to make kumano kodo accessible to foreigners! With the help of the homepage not much preparation was needed. I also bought the guidebook in Takajiri and it is excellently written! The trail itself is also in great condition, it's almost impossible to get lost and I loved the overall experience so much. I had to skip the last hike due to a cold, but getting to my last stay via bus was also no problem. Absolutely everybody I met on the way was helpful and friendly. Thank you so much!

I enjoyed the journey walked from Takijiri to Nachisan over 5 days. Although this was my solo trip, I liked the services of accommodations & Luggage Shuttle offered by KUMANO TRAVEL，all arrangements worked perfectly as planned. Stunning mountain/ forest walks and very hospitable people & culture
The trek itself can be as gentle or demanding/ challenging to suit. We spread our journey from Takijiri to Nachisan over 5 days, some days longer than others through a wide range of terrain, however you can walk as little or as much as you like because buses run between many points along the trail. Excellent pocket size pamphlet with maps and route/ elevation information is available from Tanabe City Kumano Tourism Bureau next to the Kii-Tanabe train station (also available to download from their website). The trails are well sign-posted and the landscape is simply breath-taking. We did the trek in November and were blessed with good weather, it did rain heavily but both times happened overnight.
We cannot praise the local places we stayed enough, they were homes away from home with superb food and fantastic and friendly hosts. Special thanks to Kumano Travel for sorting out the reservations, excellent communications and service. All arrangements worked perfectly as planned.

Fantastic walk

Great Experience
It was one of my best travelexperiences so far. I was a bit late for booking the accomodations, but the staff members of Kumano Travel helped me with other options and routes. Also on my first day in Tanabe, I went to the travel support center and asked a lot of questions. And they were so kind an patient with me and helped me find the route to all booked accomodations with bus timetables and maps. Thanks to them, I had a great start and a wonderful trip.

A bit complucated, a bit slow and rather expensive
The hostels/hotels were very nice including excellent food. Information provided on the website is valuable and up to date. Not so good: It takes very long to finish the booking process. Back and force, and all over again. Plan A, B, C... Also on the down side: Too few alternatives in a bit lower price range - makes the trek rather costly.
What I disliked very much: We were warned in respect of typhoon Hagibis and canceled our second night in Yunomine, but had to pay 50 % cancelation fee. Way too much in my point of view. 20 % ok, but not more, having received no service so far and given the high price of the minshuku.

Meet the People, Their Culture, Past and Present
From start to finish this was a great immersion into the people, culture and landscape of the Kii Peninsula. The Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes are fantastic. We took our time and found that many people were rushing to meet difficult times and even marathon runs in the mountains. But the walk itself is not about timing and distance, it is about culture, beautiful settings, wildlife, great meals, genuine rural hospitality, sharing of stories and making friends and learning about the origin of religion in Japan. Most people slogging it out along the path did not get to know the people along the way. Take time to visit and talk and enjoy everything the region has to offer. It's not about a destination, it is about the journey! On a daily basis you can decide how much walking you want to do and how much exploration. There are numerous ways to be an accredited pilgrim and even a dual pilgrim even if you don't want to slog 21 KM as a challenge.

What a wonderful physical and cultural experience
I did this walk alone over four days and can't recommend it highly enough to the keen walker. It is physically quite challenging – or at least I found it so and I'm reasonably fit – but a lovely trek through all sorts of forest with some hefty climbs and steep descents. A highlight for me was staying in the various minshuku which were always very welcoming and offered excellent meals. The weather at this time of year was very steamy and I was drenched in sweat early on each day, but that really didn't take away from the enjoyment of the experience.

Great walk
Itinerary was great - well thought out with sufficient rest in between, and difficult and easier days were well spaced out. Maps provided by Kumano Travel were excellent - even showed where the vending machines and water points were! Some detours were present but were very well signposted.

A great experience but some disappointments
The good things:
- Kumano Travel very organised.
- The accommodation, food and welcome was very good everywhere I stayed.
Things that could have been better:
- Kumano Travel staff not very welcoming.
- The walk to Hongo was too long as I had to shelter due to the typhoon; I would have planned the route differently.
- I wish the forest was older and had more biodiversity; it is really a commercial tree plantation and not so interesting to walk through.

Subarashii desu, honto!
Overall this was a wonderful experience. The trails were clearly marked and well maintained. The scenery was beautiful - including the many Temples/Oji and the uniquely Japanese curated 'wilderness' of cedar trees and many types of Sakura (although mainly somei yoshino in the villages and yama-zakura in the hills). Staying in the small Minshuku with exceptional hospitality of local hosts was also a highlight. The rooms may appear a bit 'takai' (expensive) but when you consider the meals which were often >4* restaurant quality and the packed bento lunches it is good value for money. The onsen or hot baths waiting at each guesthouse was a great feature after a day of walking, and some were truly exceptional (Yunomine, Kawayu). It was also great to have the support of Kumano Travel to take some of our baggage to our final destination when we arrived with a bit more than we were prepared to carry over the full 7 days. Incredible cultural & outdoor adventure
This was truly the experience of a lifetime. Kumano travel made all the arrangements so easy, and almost certainly less expensive than I would have been able to manage on my own. The places we stayed varied widely, but each offered some brand of unique hospitality. The food we ate was some of the best we've had in Japan, and the people we met along the way became fast friends. I would highly recommend booking through Kumano Travel for anyone considering a trip along the Kumano Kodo.

Great pilgrimage, although not comparable with Santiago
We've had a great time on the Kumano Kodo! Before our start we had problems comparing it with the Camino de Santiago. This hasn't changed: the dual pilgrim is a nice thing but shouldn't be the reason to go to Japan and walk the Kumano.

Six days of peace
This trip is a long hike if you do it all, but with the ease of luggage service and good weather we finished each day tired but ready for the next after a good bath dinner and sleep. Plan on early mornings and nights, lots of climbing, much on stone steps and hours of quite beauty. Hiking poles are strongly recommended unless you are 20. It is very easy to slip if stones are wet. Do take rain gear any month. This is a Japan you cannot experience in the cities. All the hosts are welcoming and a you make acquaintance with fellow walkers on the same route often meeting at that nights dinner in the locations where lodging choices are limited. The dinners and breakfasts were generally superb, lunches varied. The trail is well marked so easy to follow except into and out of Koguchi.

Great little adventure, literally crossing mountains. Some of the segments are no joke, so make sure you're fit and well prepared before setting out.
It's an historical route that dates back hundreds of years, and its magic still lingers in the air.

An absolutely wonderful pilgrimage hike. The route is very well signposted and the walk is at times easy and at others quite hard. The sites of shrines or other sites of interest along the way are well provided with explanation plaques. Each "stage" is comfortably do-able in a day. The lunch boxes provided by almost all of the lodgings are necessary as there are not places on the route to buy lunch. At some places along the way there are the sites of former Tea Houses and even small villages but they are not there any more. The walk itself is lovely from deep forest to views over misty mountains, gorgeous bird song and idyllic peace. Like the Camino in Spain a good part of the day is arriving at the place you are staying and meeting up with other pilgrims who you may, or may not meet again as you walk along the road.

This was our first international trek and the Kumano Kodo Trail was the perfect one to start with. The people were friendly, the trail was beautiful, and experience unrivaled. nakahechi Trail
Hi Kumano Travel, I would like to say a huge thankyou to your team who helped myself and my fiance (Maricris) have a truly memorable and extraordinary vacation. We travelled over from the Philippines and the cold weather we experienced along the trail soon disappered with the warmth of hospitality and friendliness we felt from everyone we met. The accommodation was wonderful (The best was the homestays, where we met the most wonderful hosts and sampled authentic Japanese hopitality, delicious food and an amazing experience. From the initial booking, to the help inside the Tanabe Tourism office and to the hosts along the way we truly felt welcomed and safe. The walk was physically challenging, however that was what we enjoyed (as well as the nature, the spiritual connection and the peace and quiet), we enjoyed it so much that we have decided to become 'Dual Pilgrims', and head over to Europe in the summer. We would like to return to Japan after becoming dual pilgrims in Spain, to also recieve the Japanese version of the certificate too (is this possible please?).
Once again, a huge thank you from Maricris and myself to everyone of your team who helped put together our trip. We will return to Japan.

Very enjoyable trek through Japanese country side and pine forests
We loved the walk even though it was not through pristine forest. It was the journey immersed in Japanese history and religion. Need to be aware that is often wet and slippery - evidenced by the vegetation. Highly recommend the use of two walking poles.

susceptable to typhoon damage
It's difficult to check on trail closure details, particularly in English. I arrived to find that a lot of my first few days would be bustituted. After arriving on the train, the lady at the information desk told me I should catch the next bus all the way as I wouldn't make it to the accommodation should I try to walk up the hill. Also that I needed to buy lunch for the next day outside the train station. I didn't try to test the first assertion, but I risked it with the second. The supermarket at the destination bus stop was fine.
I did less walking that I could have due to the weird bus fare structure and timetable. Once you're on the bus, it doesn't make economic sense to make short trips.
It's a nice sight to see a vending machine in the middle of a forest.
Towards the end I was making good time, even with typhoon damage detours. I made so much time once that I had to wait three hours in the rain for the hotel owners to open shop.
Some of the maps could be annotated better as I missed some of the shrines.

Lasting Memories
We hiked in late November when the trees show their beautiful coloring. Really beathtaking scenery and perfect weather conditions in November for multiday hiking on the Kumano Kodo. Also the rural atmosphere and very polite and helpful japanese people added to this awesome experience. We will probably return and walk this trail again :)

Unmissable, unforgettable experience
In spite of the daily, intermittent rain, the entire trek was the highlight of our first trip to Japan. It provided sufficient challenge without pushing us too hard. The trek itself was very serene, well-marked, and with only a handful of other travelers or pilgrims crossing our path along the way, it was peaceful, beautiful and almost otherworldly. We would love to visit the Kii Peninsula again.

Tough but worth it.
This is my second time walking Kumano, but my first time walking from Tanabe to Katsura the entire way. There are lots of shrines and other sites to see. If you are an experienced hiker, the forth day will probably be the hardest (it was for me). The fifth day was only 16 kilometers, but starts off going uphill for about four kilometers. The rest is easy.
If you’re not experienced, take your time and bring lots of water! I do not recommend this six day hike for complete beginners!

Great zen experience.
The hike was perfect as it matched our expectations. After visiting Tokyo, it was a welcoming way to enjoy sillence. Travelling in June also allowed for not meeting too many other hikers. Even though the weather might not be optimal. We had to skip the last stretch because the rain was too heavy. In any case, the views have been stunning, the food provided along the hike was marvelous and we could really enjoy nature.

Amazing hike, even in bad weather. A great challenge!
I'm really happy I completed the Kumano Kodo. It is a tough challenge - hikers will want to prepare properly with training, and bring good equipment, especially well-worn boots. A lot of the trails are challenging, both for steepness and terrain. But it's every worth it for the views, the wildlife and the amazing food to eat along the way, not to mention the shrines themselves.
Logistically the Kumano-travel.com website was a huge help, it was a big relief to be able to concentrate on preparing for the hike with all of my accommodation and meals planned and booked.

Great trail - would do it again
We thoroughly enjoyed the hiking. Beautiful landscape, very friendly hosts - a rewarding experience. Would be nice if they could re-establish the original trail instead of the detours. Some of the accommodations would benefit from a sign at the trail, so that one does not miss them. Beware of the snakes. They like to take a break right on the trail - I almost stepped on one.

Could easily be done in 5 days.
Having found that Takahara is less than 2 hours walk from Takijiri-oji, I wish I’d continued on to Chikatsuyu-oji. Anyone of average fitness, who sets off from Takijiri-oji before 1:30 pm in June, can easily make it to Chikatsuyu-oji before dinner (sunset is around 7pm in June, and dinner around 6pm in most guest houses). I found that most of the times quoted in the itineraries were very generous. Even in the pouring rain on the final leg to Nachi Taisha, I cut an hour off the lowest time quoted in the itinerary.

I loved this walk. I feel sad that many people visit Japan and do not get to experience anything outside of the big cities. It was a beautiful experience to experience a quieter part of Japan and a more traditional culture. The walk was very well signed, every guesthouse had extra map copies (for when mine got wet and destroyed) and all the tourist information centres along the way were very helpful. I couldn't get lost even if I tried, with the multiple 'Not Kumano Kodo' signs up at areas that might confuse someone. When I needed to catch a bus, it was straightforward and easy. I would highly recommend this to anyone wanting to hike in Japan.
I would have loved to book everything through kumano travel, however sadly on the last night the Minshuku was fully booked and I ended up having to stay in an airbnb. Some of my other fellow walkers took a bus to another guesthouse in Kii-Katsuura due to the same reason. I understand that this is unavoidable, however in Nachi where there is only one place of accomodation (that was booked out due to a school trip), perhaps it would be useful to offer guests with suggestions on alternatives if somewhere is booked out.

Memorable and highly enjoyable
A wonderful five days. Not too hard at all if you're used to trekking - indeed, we felt we could have done an hour or two more every day - the difficulty ratings might be a bit exaggerated. One work of caution - the first day is very short, and could easily be combined with the second day. Many people seem to do this. But then, we had a massive thunderstorm the first day we were glad to hide from, and the first night's guesthouse (Mountain Retreat, Takahara) was unmissable - so if you include that, it's a good route!

Amazing Hike
We really loved our Kumano Kodo experience. The nature was beautiful and we enjoyed learning more about Japan and the pilgrimage along the way.
Some days were physically challenging but this made it very rewarding to arrive at a comfortable accommodation and enjoy great food. The Kumano Kodo path was usually clearly marked and this made it easy to us to navigate our way.

How delightful was this trek through beautiful forests of cedar and cypress and flowering azaleas and camellias, all the while accompanied by birdsong. Signage was excellent!

Awesome start...
short but severe uphill... great day 1 start. 2 hours only so not so bad at all. Day 2 very pleasant.. not tough, a bit long but great commune with nature. Day 3 yet a long day... but manageable. Day 4 a bit deceiving as brochure said very pleasant and not hard at all... wrong, bring your walking sticks.. it has lots of uphill and downhill portions.. enjoy the nature, bring packed lunch. Day 5 The killer... start early, take your time.. abrupt steep uphill (never ending)...at the end downhill down and down and down. Once u see the sign that trail ends.. dont celberate yet as the Shrine is still 1.5 km way downhill yet from this point.. :) try be at the shrine by 3 if you want to enjoy everything as by 4.30 everything starts to shut down. Dont forget to walk to the water fall... yes another downhill down n down...

Generally, it's very good experience. Not so many people during this season. One suggestion is the guesthouse arrangement is not reasonable to consider about the distance of walking in everyday. Have to take the bus, especially in the third day.

very much enjoyed this trek. at low altitude (1000m - max) it was very pleasant and not difficult. the rocks can get slippy and the warnings are there to remind you. the final stretch to Nachi has a steep climb to begin with. prepare for that. take your time and pace it well. the rest is pretty easy after. the weather was dreadful and on the last day the other two hikers were warned against going up. I wasnt - but that is fine, I made it but had to go slow at times to take care not to fall. I would like to thank Kumano Travel for their excellent organisation and service. as mentioned above they took a personal interest when I fell ill and I felt very much looked after along the way. would definitely use this service again and recommend to anyone thinking of doing this route! do not forget to get your passport for collecting stamps along the way!

An incredible journey: beautiful and meaningful
This part of the Kii peninsular is a very beautiful part of Japan. Whilst at times quite physically demanding, this itinerary was not technically difficult to walk. Sojourners are treated to trails descending through deeply lovely forest arbours, river crossings lined with stunning crimson maple (in autumn), and ancient roads dotted with oji, shrines, and the historic ruins of ancient tea-houses, and of course, breathtaking mountain views.
Very well signposted, and manageable routes each day to each night's appointed accomodation.

Physically challenging to do 5 days but well worth it
The walk was tougher than I anticipated. I would probably have done 5 days with 2 days break in the middle at Yunomine onsen town. However, it was an amazing experience and enjoyed the walk through misty forest, beautiful mountain sceneries and learning about the pilgrims stories along the way. Highly recommend the walk and the experience. Apart from the walk, we were able to experience rural Japanese hospitality and culture which was amazing.

Kumano Kodo is most beautiful and magnificent place on earth. It demands physical fitness to walk this trail during the summer month especially in September. There are some sections on the trail quite narrow and easy to loose foot It is good if there is some signage to beware of trail danger ahead. The detour trail is very scenic, if one walk form Chikatsuyu to Hongu in one day can be treacherous. A primitive camping/lodging type along the way would break this section into more enjoyable and appreciation of Kumano Kodo

Loved this hike!
We (family of 4, with 10 and 7 year old boys) hiked four days on the Nakahechi trail from Takijiri to Koguchi. We are in our 40's and were generally fine. The kids (who are used to 3-4 hour hikes only) had an easy time and frequently were ahead of us.
We did this hike in mid August and it was hot, but almost entirely shaded. Once you accept sweat as mostly constant, you're fine. The hike is long, a lot of ups and a lot of downs. The walk through pine and spruce forests was magical. The detour area was not as pleasant and I would prefer to skip it if possible.
We only saw a handful of hikers every day. One of the days we saw almost nobody. I don't know if it's different other times of year. We were impressed with both the signage and the upkeep of the trail.
I enjoyed the onsen experience tremendously, especially at the end of the hike and before dinner. My 10 year old said that the onsen 'is sooooo relaxing'. Perhaps less relaxing for my husband who had to corral the 2 boys as all the onsens are gender segregated.
There was not a lot of downtime on the hike, but we still made opportunities for the kids to play in the streams and cool off.
Day 1 (Takijiri to Takahara) was a relatively short but STEEP hike. There is one segment where you walk 0.4 km and gain equal elevation. We loved the Takahara Organic hotel for its views, rooms, and food. Day 2 (Takahara to Tsugizakura) was long but manageable, with the reward of great food at Minshuku Tsugizakura. Day 3 (Tsugizakura to Yunomine onsen) was tough - mostly for the length of the trail. Get an early start if you're a group who likes to take breaks. Getting into the onsen after this day and stretching a lot were the only reasons I could continue the following day. Day 4 (Yunomine onsen to Koguchi) was a nice hike. We bipassed the initial part of road walking by taking the short bus ride to the trailhead. In retrospect, we should have done the same on day 3.
We stayed near Kii Katsura (where we left our car) before the hike, took the train to Tanabe, the bus to Takijiri, and hiked 4 days to Koguchi. The folks at Takata Green Land gave us a ride to Shingu and we were able to take a short train ride to reclaim our renal car in Kii Katsura. In retrospect, leaving the car in Shingu would have been slightly easier.

Review plans that your offer on the website
The Kumado Kodo was a very good experience. I only suggest to to be more flexible in the booking process. When I booked the different plans for each day I asked if it was possible to book withouth meals and I the asnwers was that in most places there is no restaurant or food shops. But when I did the Kumano Kodo I realized that everywhere there was always a food store. And for example, in Kaatsura, the city is full of restaurants and shops, but the plans you offer do not allow any plans without meals.
I think it is best if you offer a variety of plans. For example, in Spain, the Saint James ways, allows people who can not spend much money on accommodation can also do it. The hostels are very simple but also very cheap. There are also special prices for pilgrims in hostels and restaurants. I think it is a good way to promote the way and that people, who may not be able to allocate many resources can also do it.
I also think it is a very good way to promote the way and make it more popular and known. I think it can encourage people to do it.
Even so, I consider it to be a very good experience and I was delighted to be able to discover everything it offers during the days I've been there.

Sensational trek.
One is fully immersed into the Japanese culture immediately. It's a very hard trek for this 66 year old carrying full backpack for six days in seething summer heat. However I loved every second of this adventure and will repeat this again within 12 months.

Exceeded our expectation! Wonderful walk and experience in a beautiful part of the world.
We had the most amazing six days on the Kumano Kodo trail. The booking experience was really easy and helpful. The walk itself was quite physically challenging but extremely beautiful and lots of fun. The historical aspect and shrines along the way made it all the more enjoyable. Very informative and helpfull
Website contained all the info needed to prepare for the trail. Trail was very well indicated. Alternatives for Hongu came in ahndy due to heavy rain on that day. Again good info. Mako was very forwarding and personal in our mail conversation. Thumbs up for making the Kunamo kodo accessible for foreigners in this way. An Incredible Experience!
We loved hiking the Kumano Kodo on this itinerary. Some parts were difficult, but we were prepared for it. Be ready for the length of day 3 (and plan carefully with the bus schedule at the end of the day) and the elevation gains on day 5. Every day contains a lot of climbs and descents. The satisfaction of ending each day and arriving at the guesthouse to wonderful hosts and amazing meals topped it all off. We met some nice people along the way and saw incredible scenery throughout the trek.

Must do for hikers everywhere
The Kumano Kodo exceeded our expectations. Having come from 2 weeks in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka it was so nice to get some down time and relax into this trip. The first and last days were probably the hardest, with the most altitude gained and lost, but for the most part the trail is pretty leisurely. Everyone we met along the trail, both hikers and locals were very friendly and helpful. All the accommodations were unique and fantastic, adding to the whole experience. If you are thinking about doing this trail then I thoroughly recommend it, especially as it seems the masses have yet to discover it. Maybe it was the time of year or we were lucky but we hardly saw anyone on this trail for the whole 5 days. Get there before the word gets out.

Amazing experience and challenge!
The Kumano Kodo 6 days trek was an incredible experience. I'm really glad I started with a short hike so I could stay in the Suzushiro cottage in the mountains and launch the rest of my hike from here. While many other hikers took a rest day after arriving at Yunomine Onsen, it was a great experience to challenge myself to complete this hike without a break. Definitely worth the time and effort to experience the peace and beautiful of these mountains by foot!

Detailed high quality maps and Kumamoto Kudo website are really useful. So is the advise and online booking system for accomodation by Tanabe Tourism Organisation. We were initially unsure about whether to organise our trip through a travel agency or Tanabe. But we found the website a great planning resource.

Beautiful despite the rain
We mixed this up a bit starting in Takijiri to Chikatsuyu to Kobiro, Bus to Hosshinman, walk to Hongu with a short bus hop to Yuomine. Then we took the boat to Shingu and a bus to Nachi via an over night in Katsuura. Best walk; Hosshinmon to Hongu and the boat ride the sun was shining. Family of 5 including a 12 year old and walking was hilly but no problem.

Opportunity of a lifetime
We had only a week's holiday, and decided to spend it on this trek. The booking was very smooth and easy, even though we couldn't get all our first choices, we just decided to go with whatever was available, and everything turned out extremely well. Staff in the information bureau at Tanabe really helpful. Didn't know about the double accreditation for Santiago pilgrims with Kumano Kodo but it has been a wonderful way to see two very different parts of the world

It added to my experience that many of the information signs had English content so that I could get a sense of the history of pilgrimage here. While I was very happy that I had the trails mostly to myself and did not experience 800+ imperial retainers accompanying the emperor, that would have been quite a sight and the information boards were able to paint the picture for me.

A challenging, but highly satisfying hike
The Kumano Kodo had been on my "to do" list for some years and I am so pleased that I have finally done it. It is just such a perfect way to see another side of Japan away from the big cities or really touristy spots. The parts we enjoyed most were passing through the small villages and receiving friendly greetings from local people. The track is at times rather challenging, especially day 5 walking from Koguchi to Nachisan up the never-ending "body breaking path". We were glad that we did the hike in the cool of December, rather than in the heat of a Japanese summer. We were also glad that we had opted for the packed lunch option so that we didn't have to worry about buying food along the way - as some days there weren't many (or any) places to get anything otherwise. Would highly recommend bringing a hiking pole as this was a great help on the long, steep descents and the uneven surfaces.

A really wonderful experience
I walked the Kumano Kodo Trek with my 16 year old son starting on Boxing day. It was a really wonderful experience. Most days we had the track to ourselves hardly seeing anyone. The solitude in the mountains was amazing. Any people we did meet were very friendly. The track was well marked. The scenery was spectacular. The weather was excellent. It got down to -2 but with appropriate clothing the conditions were very enjoyable. We had a sprinkling of snow, half a day of rain, otherwise sunshine all the way. Walking poles were essential as I found it hard going on my knees coming down all the steps, otherwise the paths and tracks were all manageable. All our accommodation and baths along the way was excellent. I've never eaten so much great food. This was a really great experience to share with my son and made for an interesting contrast to the big Japanese cities we went on to visit after the walk.

amazing trek
Loved it. If we could do it over, we'd spend an extra day or half-day in Yunomine Onsen and Nachisan. We wouldn't have overnighted in Koguchi unless we had a reservation at Momofuku. Also, be sure to arrive in Kii-Tanabe before 14:50 so you can catch the bus to the first trailhead before it's too late to make the hike to Takahara. Finally, plan an extra half-day to a day to visit the Hayatama Grand Shrine in Shingu.

Loved our cultural adventure
Our Kumano Kodo was a pleasant surprise, immersed ourselves in Japanese Culture and enjoyed the walking, variety of scenery, some steep climbs but enjoyable. Accommodation was fantastic along the way, some better than others of course. Hiking poles are a big help, very easy transport wise and all went smoothly with the help of locals.

Suggested Itinerary was perfect except for one small detail
Itinerary was very detailed except for Day 3, which was the longest distance from Tsugizakura to Yunomine Onsen, when the distance and time estimate given was for Tsugizakura to Hongu taisha. From Hongu Taisha to Yunomime onsen, it was going to be another 3-4km of walking. This should have been made clearer.

Wonderful opportunity to slow the pace of one's life
As it was peak season and a lot of accommodations were already fully booked, I ended up doing the recommended 6-day hiking trip within 5 days (4 nights), which wasn't a problem at all.
A lot of people do parts of the route with the bus, so I had the trail all to myself for most of the time. Hiking through the lovely forests, I saw quite a lot of animals (from snakes, squirrels, monkeys, funny orange crabs, to a Japanese serow).
Since it was partly rainy on two of the four days, the slippery stone paths became somewhat of a challenge. If you are an experienced hiker, though, this isn't a problem.
The beautiful landscape, the friendly and welcoming hosts of the accommodations along the trail, the delicious meals as well as the relaxing baths at the end of the day made this trek a wonderful experience.

Beautiful experience
The landscape was (of course) amazing. The maps and informations that Kumamo Kodo Travel provided were very good but often not really needed, because there are a lot of signs and you cannot get lost (even with a bad orientation).

A Perfect Trip!
The six day trek was everything we hoped for and more! The food was far beyond our highest expectations and the highlight of the trip! The trail was well marked with plenty of opportunities for toilets, views, and peaceful scenery. I did appreciate that the longest day was followed by the stay in the Onsen town - a definite must for weary muscles! The rain does make the stone stairs quite slippery, but we managed and were happy to have our trekking poles for that very reason. The long climb on the final day was do-able for the fit, though it did seem endless at times! Well worth the effort though! Overall a fabulous trip and I would do it all again in a heartbeat!

An Excellent and Challenging Trek
For a first timer on the Kumano Kodo, the Nakahechi trek had a lot to offer:
* beautiful scenery
* superb food
* physically challenging hiking (especially between Koguchi and Nachisan)
* excellent signage
* truly standout cultural sights
The highlights are Honghu temple, Yunomine + Tsuboyu, and Nachi falls.
I wish I had had more time in Honghu, but the trek from Tsugizakura to Honghu took about ~7 hours. Starting at 8:30am, that only left an 45 minutes before we had to catch the bus to Yunomine. For this leg of the trek, I would highly recommend hitting the trail at 7:30.
The only other thing I would do differently is stay 2 nights instead of 1 in Yunomine. It's a spa town, so it's quite relaxing and a good place to recover. There's plenty to do there during the day such as ride a boat down the river, fly fishing, etc. After 3 days of intense hiking, it's good to take the day to recover as the last 2 days of hiking are the hardest.
The most frustrating part of the hike is the slick stones. I can understand why they're there, but nonetheless, it's very easy to slip and fall when going down hill. Make sure to use a stick or pole for extra balance.
The hike from Koguchi to Nachi is hard and long. It took me 5 hours, but everyone else that started that day took 7-8 hours. Start early if you're on the slow side, you'll want to take you time to soak in the amazing sites at Nachi falls. The plum ice cream is amazing too.
Another tip, on the leg between Tsugizakure and Honghu, the farmers have wooden stands with goods in them. Basically they're old school vending machines. Put some money in the box and have yourself some fresh tea leaves, pickled ginger, mushrooms, etc. This is the only leg that has these stands.
Overall, this was a wonderful trek. I highly recommend it.

Great, great Tour!
We very much enjoyed our 6-day hike through wakayama prefecture. We will never forget this tour on the kumano kodo, everything was just so impressive. From the silent forests to the lovely minshukus, from the little rice paddies and nice people along the way to those impressive shrines and the small ojis ? we really hope to come back one day.

We had a very special experience walking this old trail. It was very quiet, so most of the time we would walk alone in the forest. It's beautiful in the woods, and special to walk to all the shrines. It was a bit challenging some time, but not too much.

What a beautiful walk
This is an incredible walk and it feels like you are in some movie while walking it. It is difficult to explain the beauty of this area to someone who hasn't been there. The route is marked excellently, but this is definitely not for a person who isn't at a fair level of fitness. It is extremely hilly with very steep up and down hills. We were fortunate to not have rain, but I can imagine that the down hill climbs can be very slippery and scary as many of them are while walking on rocks. I would highly recommend this hike to anyone.

Beautiful hike for the prepared.
We loved the beauty and solitude on the trail. We did get a bit overwhelmed by the third day's hike. It was a bit long and difficult for us as we were carrying packs and the detour was extrememly steep and long. However, with correct preparation and planning it will be lovely. I think maybe 7 or 8 days would be more manageable for the average person. Brad was a tremendous help to us and we thank him very much.

Absolutely wonderful, a bit tougher than we expected (which was nice) and amazing scenery and accommodation. The instructions incl maps, options etc for day 3 Tsugiazakura to Hongu were difficult to understand. We missed one of the detour signs and got lost going down the 311 road, which cost us an extra hour of walking. Also signs for accommodation at Koguchi would help. We will definitely encourage others to do this hike and use your service as your prices were substantially cheaper than some of your competitors.

The itinerary and information given in advance was faultless. The maps gave us routes, information about how high we would climb on each section and rough guidance on how long each would take. Don't be put off by the info about the walk from kabuchi to nachi taisha being very difficult. This was the nicest part of the walk and we had our climbing legs by then. We didn't find it more difficult than other days.

We found the booking site a bit tricky, it took us a while for example to figure out that we did not have to book a shuttle service every day. Communication back from the team was speedy but emails were long and it was difficult to figure out what was important information and what not.

Beautiful Journey
I loved the hike, though I'd recommend perhaps doing so in four nights rather than five. The trek is immensely reasonable, with some strenuous stretches. The landscapes are unforgettable. In addition, there are lots of local villages to walk through, shrines and things to check out, and onsen to relax in from the late afternoon on. Wish I had seen more wildlife but really no complaints. Truly one of my favorite life experiences.

hike through a historic beautiful landscape
Bei gutem Wetter sehr, sehr schone Mittelgebirgswanderung mit tollen Ubernachtungsmoglichkeiten und exzellentem Essen. Fur geubte bei schonem Wetter kein Problem. Ausgezeichnet markiert (Not Kumano-Kodo!) und ausgezeichnetes Kartenmaterial an der Tourist-Info erhaltlich. Das Sammeln von Stempeln an den Schreinen macht Spas. Stempelheft gibt es auch an der Info. Die Etappe von Koguchi nach Nachisan beinhaltet uber 800 Hohenmeter in Treppenform :-). Damit ist der letzte Tag, der einzige Tage mit uber 1000 hm gesamt. Man wird durch einen grandiosen Blick auf den Pazifik belohnt.

What a wonderful experience. A great trip, walking through atmospheric forests and catching a glimpse of the area's spiritual and religious history.
I did the first 2 days in one (Takijiri to Chikatsuyu) which I think was preferable as it's not a hard walk and there is not much to do in the villages where you stay. You also do not need to leave at 8am from Tanabe as I did this and then arrived in Chikatsuyu too early to check in.

Difficult, but rewarding trip !
Even if this trail is difficult during winter time (a lot of snow and ice on the trail), the view and nature worth the efforts. We suggest to identify better the localisation of the accommodations for the occidental tourist, because some were challenging to find. A second suggestion will be to put more information about the detour of the day 3 - with the snow and ice, it was one of the most dangerous part of all our itinerary. Thank you for this amazing experience and the excellent service, we will recommend this trip for sure ! Merck !!

Perfect start
I just started my trip in Japan with Kumano Kodo (after spending two days in Osaka) and I think it was not bad choise to start it there for several reason. It is really fun for people, that like hiking. Really nice and dense cedar forrest, lot of creeks, jizo statues and interesting stories along the road with some beautiful temples. Probably (at least for me) best way to discover something a bit different than those obvious touristic spots in Japan (not that they would not be worth it, it is just something different and more tranquil)

Unforgettable and fulfilling experience i'm already missing
I was brave and a little bit irresponsible deciding to walk along this long itinerary alone, with my huge and heavy backpack. It was really hard and tough, much more than i expected and i think much more than everyone could imagine reading the kumano Travel website. I mean, in this itinerary the third day was really really long and the last day was very steep and trying. But i was and i am right now too happy and satisfied to allow me to live such an important experience i never, never forget.
You can taste and enjoy a deep felling of peace and spiritual confluence. A must do experience for everyone

Although it was a difficult walk at certain parts of the Kumano Kodo, the beauty and sacredness of the mountains are indeed bewitching. Review for 4 Days trek from Takijiri Oji to Nachi San
Day 1 - Takijiri to Tsugizakura - Very tough first few hours going uphill.
Day 2 - Tsugizakura to Hongu Taisha - Very long 22km route. The detour involved a major very steep uphill route!!
Day 3 - Ukegawa to Koguchi - Slightly easier trek which we finished earlier than expected
Day 4 - Koguchi to Nachi san - Toughest of the 4-day trek. Slightly treacherous path on slippery stones, pebbles, or mossy rocks. Demand much focus and be careful with every single step.

A great experience
We really enjoyed our Kumano Kodo hike. The scenery and surroundings are breathtaking. The only down side was that the cobbled sections of the trail were extremely slippery and required very careful negotiation.

Beautiful and tranquil trek
The route brings you through beautiful cedar, pine and cypress forests, over the mountains, immersing in the tranquillity of the place. It can be done without a guide as the route is very well marked with big signboards. The trails are also well developed and are very obvious. Delicious food and osen waiting for you at the end of the day is a motivational factor. Some difficult sections along the way but they can be overcome. Definitely worth doing.

The highlight of my trip to Japan!
I absolutely enjoyed this hike and have made it my goal to return and try a different route (or the same, if I come with others). I was a little worried traveling alone, but the trail is so clearly marked that you can just walk and walk and not have to worry about getting lost (just mind the signs!). This allows your mind to wander in the best directions. It was beautiful and it felt pretty remote at times. I wouldn't see another person on the trail for hours. This is completely different than the trails where I'm from. It gave me the solitude I needed.

Wonderful experience
Don't expect huge sweeping vistas, or expansive views across mountains. This trail is all in the forest except for one spot on the last day looking out towards the ocean. But the magic of the Kumao is the feeling of history and spiritual practice that can be felt as you walk the steps up and down the hills. The shrines dotting the way and the stories. We loved the small ones tucked away in rocks or in tree roots. Very magical.We also loved staying in local places- each with it's own character and location in some small town. We all loved being transported to another era. We loved our time on the Kumano- memories of a lifetime for sure!
The walking is pretty easy-if you hike a bit- except for the 3rd and long day- 21 KM which actually is 26 KM if you walk it from Hongu Taisha. Which leads me to the only confusion we had along the trail. As you finish the long 3rd day and arrive into Hongu Taisha it was not clear that our hotel was actually in another town.We actually needed to have kept walking another 5KM to get to Yunomine- where we were staying. The local people were very helpful but kept saying we needed to catch a bus. In the end this was my fault- had I google mapped the hotel I would have seen this and kept walking- but you feel like Hongu Taisha is the finish of that day. Just be advised- you must continue walking past Hongu to get to Yunomine another 5K! Another option is to take the cutoff trail directly to Yunomine before you get to Hongu- but this route skips the small mountain villages which we really loved ( Hint- Buy tea when you go through!!)
So get up very early on day 3 and be on the trail by 7 at the latest- and just keep walking once you hit Hongu!

A Great Trip
I can't rave highly enough about how smoothly everything went, 6 nights in different accommodation, 2 different bag forwarding companies and another company that supplied one of our packed lunches, and it all went exactly as planned, as you learn to expect in Japan. We hiked for 5 days, starting in Kii Tanabe and ending at Nachi Falls and found it a very rewarding, if occasionally challenging experience. The downloaded maps and timetables were all accurate and very helpful in ensuring our trip ran smoothly. Get onto this while it's still relatively unknown, it was lovely feeling like we had the track to ourselves almost the whole way, and the feeling of walking along a path that people have been walking along for hundreds of years before us, was not lost on us. I'd highly recommend this to anyone looking for a truly unique inn-to-inn experience.

A fantastic hike, among mountains, Oji, cedar trees and ghostly clouds. Each stage provide a different scenery or monument to explore. And the last stage, ending over the Pacific Ocean, is breathtaking. The traditional Japanese cooking and warm receptions would raise the spirits of even the most tired hiker. No high mountains, but steep climbs and treacherous rocks make the hike challenging enough.

Fabulous experience
This walk exceeded our expectations, it was unlike anything we had done before and were mesmorised by the beauty of the place. Even though we had rain on three of the days for about 2-3 hours it did not seem to matter. We were lucky to walk alone most of the time, it was only on Sunday that we met other walkers, so the feeling of being alone in nature was amazing.

Fantastic walk!
We did this in July when it was 30 degrees plus but the forest was cool and beautiful. The walk is highly recommended - fantastic views and interesting history, though challenging in parts (lots of ups and downs). We have done parts of the Camino de Santiago, and I would rate Kumono Kodo higher than the Camino.

Hiking with varying degrees of difficulty
Kumano Kodo contains several day trips with varying demands. Note that slopes may be steep and that change of plans might be necessary in rainy weather when the ground may be slippery. However, bus services are good or even very good, and will enable that some parts may be left out, or walked in other order than originally planned.

Wonderful - steeped in history and culture
The walk waseverything and more that we expected. From arrining off JR train from Kyoto at the visitor centre and receiving a detailed briefing and notes from the staff, then a short bus trip to the start of the walk where we were met by friendly staff ready to take our bags on the luggage service, it just got better. Luggage was tagged with a laminated tag and was effortlessly moved on each day to our new accommodation without us doing anything! Each minshuku or ryokan seemed to know exactly when we would arrive from walking each day and were looking out for us. Logistics and organisation was seamless and unobtrusive.
The walk was great - mainly in forest, the terain changed considerably each day and the sense of history at the remains of tea houses, shrines, the temples was fantastic. Have a stamp book we could stamp at points of interest along the way added to the whole experience. Very good interpretive signage in Japanese and English was great. Overall a great walk and we will definitely be back to walk int he area again.

The weather can be a little erratic (I was there at the start of April), but even so this is an amazing walk which I would highly recommend. It should not be a problem for a reasonably fit person, and the views etc are great. The only few downsides is that the forests are kept and not truly wild (most of the trees look pretty young), and so if you are looking for older and pristine forests, a better option would be to hike down in Yakushima (albeit without the convenience of a service like this website). Also I think the six day hike is definitely a bit too long. For people who exercise regularly, the trek can be done in 4 days, with an overnight in Tanabe the night before.
My special compliments to the wry humour of whoever put the ""Yes, this is the Kumanodo detour"" sign at the top of the mountain.

Love the trek! But some signs abput route changes were written in japanese only. Hope that you receive funding to repair the original route that is damaged. One thing though- I think it would be good to advice foreign trekkers that yukata, towels, toiletries are supplied in all minshuku. Also to advice them strongly to carry light and send baggage all the way to end point. We didnt realise that the above were supplied and brought toiletries n pajamas along.

This was a standout highlight of our 3 week Japan holiday. Beautiful scenery, great people, delicious food, traditional accommodation, everything was great. All of us, parents plus two teenage girls, thought this was the best one week holiday we'd ever taken. Great day hikes, great japanese food, traditional bath based accomodation and incredibly friendly people. A trip we'll always remember.
