Accommodations

Staying in traditional style accommodations is one of the joys of travelling in the area, especially in a hot spring village where you can soak in healing mineral waters and dine on fresh local cuisine. There are different sets of rules than at a western style hotel, but with a little bit of preparation and practice it can be a rewarding experience.

Totsukawa Onsen

Minshuku

Gyoja Minshuku Taiyo-no-Yu is an older 6 story wooden building built on the side of a steep slope overlooking the emerald waters of the a dam-lake in Totsukawa Onsen.   It is located between the trailhead of the Kumano Kodo Kohechi route and the Totsukawa Onsen village.  The building is mixed use, with a day service facility for the elderly on the first floor and accommodation on the upper floors.  The entrance to the accommodation is off of the main road on the 5th floor.   The rooms are Japanese style.  The non-circulating onsen baths are both indoors and outdoors.  The outdoor bath on the upper floor has an enjoyable view.  Gyoja Minshuku Taiyo-no-Yu collaborates with local hunters to share the authetic mountain culture gastronomy, with deer and wild boar featured prominently on the menu.

Ryokan Tabanakan

Totsukawa Onsen

Ryokan

Tabanakan is a family-run Ryokan inn located in the central settlement of Totsukawa Onsen.  It was the first accommodation in the area with a history of over 100 years, the currently owners being the 4th generation.  The facility has been rebuilt and modified over time but retains the atmosphere of a welcoming, well-managed, highly-respected establishment.  Meals highlight the regional culture and ingredients are sourced locally whenever possible; dishes such as mountain vegetables, river fish, wild boar, and deer reflect this culinary ethic—source local, eat local. The baths are 100% non-circulating high quality hot spring water, including one for private use open to the sky.

◆ NOTICE ◆
Tabanakan can only accept reservations 2 months or less in advance.
