Its a must!
This was my first solo overseas trip and even though there were no bear sightings in the trail, I still chose to hire a local guide for peace of mind and it turned out to be one of the best decisions of my trip. On my longest walk on Day 1, I had the pleasure of being guided by Yukiyo-san. On my shorter walk the following day, by Asai-san. Both were incredibly kind, knowledgeable, and informative. I learned so much about the nature, history, culture and spiritual essence of the Kumano Kodo; things I would definitely have missed on my own and wont easily find online.

Bad information
We could not find the information on where we were to meet the guide. It wasn't on our booking confirmation. Our guide called us at the time we were to meet them and told us where they were, which was 40 minutes away from our hotel. That's too far, and anyway we had already started our walk

Good ending in KUMANO KODO
It is my last day in KUMANO KODO. The guide is Mr.Youhei Nakano who is like my old friends. I think that is a good ending. I told him I need to take the bus at 11 am cause I already booked the train to Nagoya at 1 pm. He gave me a very comfortable speed to walk. It is not rush, but not slow too. It makes me really enjoy my last day KUMANO KODO Trek. And we still chat a lot when we walk. I take the bus successfully, so I go back to Kii-Katsuura Station and still have time to eat lunch. Hope can see him soon again.

The special Kamikura Shrine
I am very happy to see Ms.Yayoi Kamiya again. She still told me a lot of stories about KUMANO KODO and brought me to a spectacular scene.Kamikura Shrine it is really shocked me; not only the view and the stairs, standing under the big rock is also an unforgettable experience. I truly like this shrine. I think it is very special. And after KUMANO KODO Trek, she drove the car to take me to a restaurant she recommended. In there, I tried the whale meat for the first time. It tastes like pork, I like it. She drove me to the nearest bus station after we enjoyed our great lunch. And wait for the bus with me until I get my bus. If one day I come back to KUMANO KODO, I really want to walk with her again.

Rainy and cold day, but still feel good in KUMANO KODO
Mr.Keigo Yasui is a very kind person. I think he is the person who most understands KUMANO KODO. Because I really learned a lot from him. Thanks for waiting for me to take so many pictures in every place cause that day is a rainy and cold day. After KUMANO KODO Trek, we ate the delicious lunch he recommended, and he also told me the time and bus I should take to my hotel. Really appreciate him.

New friend in KUMANO KODO
I have a great time with Mr.Youhei Nakano in KUMANO KODO. He not only told me the story about KUMANO KODO, but we also chat about the work, family, etc. . We have some similar ideas or hobbies, so he let me feel like we are old friends despite the fact that we met the first time. The lunch he recommended is really delicious. At the end of the second day destination. He gave me a good advice about where I should take the bus on the third day. And that is really useful. On the third day, I can sit on the bus instead of standing in the crowded bus. Thanks for Ms.Yayoi Kamiya again. She told Mr.Youhei Nakano that I have some check-in issues on the first day. So after KUMANO KODO Trek. Mr.Youhei Nakano stays with me until I check in successfully.

Good start on KUMANO KODO
I really enjoy the KUMANO KODO Trek with Ms.Yayoi Kamiya. She is a very nice person; in fact, I was a little bit nervous cause this is my first time to KUMANO KODO. But she told me a lot of stories about KUMANO KODO, helped me take pictures, and brought me to the spectacular scene. And also tell me the guides in the future days of my are easygoing person too. That really helps me feel calm and enjoy the KUMANO KODO. The most important thing is that I have some check-in issues on the first day; Ms.Yayoi Kamiya and her friend really help me a lot. I don't know her friend's name. But I really appreciate them too. I think they gave me a good start on KUMANO KODO even though I faced some issues with check-in.

A day to remember
None of us (including the local guides) were expecting the tsunami alert :) The visit was great although we had in mind the alert and how to manage the return to the hotel and our trip back to Tokyo. I already mentionned via "my chat" but I repeat my previous message here: your local guides were great to handle this situation. They did not leave until we decide to go back to the hotel for another night. They are great and kind guys.

The local guide was great. But I am wondering if the hike is really for beginners because the steps are high. Fortunately we are in good shape so we were just a little exhausted at the top.

Wonderful guide from Takijiri-Oji to Takahara
Our guide, Mitsuo, was very knowledgeable and led us from Takijiri-Oji to our accomodation in Takahara at a pace that, though grueling at times, was very manageable. We would highly recommend this service to anyone starting off on the Kumano Kodo trek.

She was not well prepared. Even though she made a sign to greet us at the bus stop (in Italian!) she didn’t take it out and show it to us until much later. Because of the chaos caused by an overloaded bus ( see note on the Chinese groups), I had to find her after I got off the bus and then we got back on the bus to ride together further down the route. I was surprised that she is not from the area but had to drive hours from Wakayama to meet us. I hope that you can recruit more guides who are local.

Extremely helpful and knowledgeable guide
Mr Youhei Nakano walked with us the first day and I'm glad we decided to take on this option. He was so knowledgeable about the history, religions and culture of this area. We got a much more in-depth and meaningful experience from him. (not possible by just reading books!). He is also an excellent hiker and provide many good tips for the whole hike. Thank you very much.

Best guide service for the Kumano Kodo
I enjoyed the guide services of Ms Wada on my first day walking the Kumano Kodo. She was very pleasant, knowledgeable, and helpful. I asked her many questions about the trail, the shrines, and other topics all of which she was able to answer. More importantly she provided advice to make the remainder of my hike a better experience as I was traveling alone. Having had my first day with a guide was very helpful. I highly recommend having a guide for at least the first day of your hike. I would have enjoyed having a guide for the remainder of my trip but that was not possible.

Kyoko-san, is as much fun as she is knowledgeable. Thank you for everything, there's so much to say that I can't place here in this review. She taught me how to climb stairs correctly - a lesson I won't forget and so much more. She helped me find an Aikido class for after my trip. So much more! Thank you!

We loved Tad. He was knowledgeable and very kind when one of us was not fit and was unexpectedly a lot slower. The weather was very bad in the afternoon, and with the combination of a slow walker and the weather, we missed our last bus. However, Tad was kind enough to drive us to our next accommodation. I apologised for the slow walker as I was unaware of this person's physical impairments.

I had a local guide, Youhei, on the last 2 days of the trip. It was fantastic to get the insights of a local who shared his views of religion and culture of the past and present. Youhei was very knowledgeable and spoke excellent English. He answered many questions I had gathered on my walk and explained many deep rooted myths of Shintoism and Buddhism. Very much appreciated!

Hatsumi
We could not have missed Hatsumi at the bus station in her cone shaped hat. She was smiling, welcoming and attentive from the start. Her knowledge of the area was impressive. We walked the “Big Gate Slope” up through the huge two trunked one tree and ended our walk seeing and feeling the power of the mighty Nachi Falls. The walk finished the friendly Hatsumi showed us another Shine to visit and then led us in her car to Tsukiji Market to educate us about tuna buying. All good fun.

Keiko
We “passed the gate of awakening…” with Keiko. When she met us at our hotel, Keiko had already done her preparation by speaking with Jennifer. That’s good communication/teamwork and meant Keiko knew our walking pace – but also shows guides that care for those they guide. It’s a little things like this that count. This walk was gentler and in parts more open, offering good views along the way between the forests areas. One of the highlights was our introduction to “forest bathing”. We stopped and snacked and wondered at our surroundings - the tree trunks, tree canopy and the sunlight streaming in – a beautiful experience – and something that will always remind us of Keiko and her gentle guidance. We ended at the Giant Torii. A great days walk.

A trip with many cancellations :(
I booked 4 tours for my Kumano trip and 2 tours were cancelled. My 2 hiking trips on 4th and 6th June with Ms Jennifer and Mr. Karl were enjoyable. They were patient, and good guides and help to make our walking enjoyable and safe. The 2nd June trip was cancelled due to Typhoon and I could understand because there was pouring rain. The guide Ms Mako Kimura was kind enough to send a small gift for the cancellation through another guide when we took a tour on 6th June. Please kindly convey my appreciation. The whale tour cancellation on 7th June was upsetting because the reason for cancellation was due to bad weather. However, when I checked the weather forecast on night of 6th June, it was predicted to be sunny the next day. Truly, when I woke up the morning of 7th June, the weather was sunny and fine. There should be a way to connect guests with tour providers directly since the tour charges had been fully paid and weather could change rapidly. Any changes in plans for cancellation or resumption of tour can be discussed directly with the tour provider rather than rely on Kumano Travel as a 3rd party. The company/guides do not provide direct access either with contacts via WhatsApp/Line and rely on landline or cell phone for contacting which can be cumbersome since not all guests will have access to local calls. The booking process was also inefficient since one has to give 7 day notice to book, failing which there is no access to the tour. Luckily I had enlisted the help of Ms Miki who coordinated the booking and made changes required for the trip. She was extremely helpful and prompt with her replies. I appreciate her assistance. Thank you.

Waka was a knowledgeable and caring guide.
It was a great experience. I don't think a guide is essential, but if you treat it as a chance to talk to learn about Japanese culture and life, there is hardly a better place than hiking through this beautiful area. Waka did provide additional insights about the shrines and places we passed.

Wealth of knowledge
Yasui Keogo San was very friendly the whole time and he was so willing to share his knowledge in the tracks/area/history. Walking without knowing the history and stories would be such a pity, so Yasui san's input was the highlight of the walk. We stopped by all the places we wanted to stop by so I was happy at the end of the walk.

Kumano Kodo Walk, one-day Guide
Jennifer was a wonderful guide and we really enjoyed her company. She was solicitous of our well-being (my husband has several joint replacements) and walked at a good pace for us. Her information was very interesting (we liked the folder with photos and graphs!) and easy to listen to, and she kept us informed of our progress and gave us some advice about our next day's activities.

Love Kyoko
Kyoko greeted us at the bus. She was to be our river guide and our guide for the day. It was pouring and they were still going through with the river tour. Unfortunately it was pretty cold and a bit miserable on the tour, but we still learned a lot and were enchanted with Kyoko’s flute playing. Once out of the boat things improved as she took us to a cool pancake house for lunch and then to a shrine and castle. Kyoko always had interesting facts to add to our understanding and was able to synthesize all of our experience up to that moment. It was very special and would do it all again.

Ms Hamaguchi was an excellent guide, very knowledgeable about Japan's history, more particularly about the Kumano area and the significance of the Nachi Shrine. We were briefed in an email before our arrival in Kumano that our guide would meet us at the bus stop. We were thrilled to see her at the appointed time. She took very good care of my family and I believe she went beyond her role as guide and was more like a friend showing us around. Despite the heavy rain, we were able to see everything, especially the pagoda and the waterfalls. We look forward to going on the 8 hour trek with her next time! I highly recommend her!

Pilgrimage Walk the day after New Year's Day
What a beautiful experience! I was there on the second day of the year to connect with nature and to visit Kumano Hongu-Taisha to say my thanks and pray for blessings. I managed to visit the Hongu-Taisha shrine before my walk. It was quiet and with only a few people at just after 8 in the morning and allowed for a quiet reflection before my walk. The mild winter made the walk very pleasant. And the guide (Jennifer) shared a lot of information about the history and significance of the place, which added depth to the experience. Kumano Kodo is a beautiful place. The route was easy enough for beginner-level hikers, I think, so that any healthy person can do the walk. It's more like a hike through the woods (than a walk through the jungle that I had imagined). I would love to visit again.
