Decent reception, host, meal. Room was traditional. I would suggest that for those who like fly fishing that you help arrange a few hours on the river fishing.

Review: Great stay in Koguchi

We had a wonderful stay with Hidi at Minshuku Momofuku which is right on the Kumano Kodo trail. We received a warm welcome and enjoyed some time relaxing in our own space. Hidi, who was a cook before retiring, served us a wonderful traditional meal and we enjoyed hearing stories about his life before he retired to Koguchi. He was also happy to wash our clothes, ready for the next day. We had a great breakfast and headed off with our bento boxes for the hardest section of the walk. Fantastic place to stay at Koguchi!

Clean stay, very friendly host, delicious dinner. The lunch bento box was pretty lacking in protein and was primarily rice, which was not enough for the following day's final hike.

Review: Experienced Host

We had to change our hiking plans due to the rain and use the local bus to get to Koguchi. The bus driver was kind enough to drop us off closer to accommodation where we found our host waiting for us (which is why I gave location of 5. Not sure how easy it is to find if we came off the trail). Our host must come out whenever the bus is scheduled to arrive to check on his guest. From the moment we arrived he was preparing dinner. You can tell he takes pride in his meal preparation. The food was very tasty! This was the only accommodation that we shared with two other hikers. We shared a common bath and toilet. This was not an issue, but the toilet was at the far end of the house and we were the first guest room. Due to the bad weather, our host advised us not to go on the trail the next day. He refunded our bento cost and advised us to visit Kumano Hayatama and eat in Shingu. Experienced host looking our for his guests!

We were welcomed with a smile and immediately host had a load of clothes washing done. Food was excellent and our room was comfortable.

Review: Very welcoming, but not our favorite stay

The location is great here, but we had a hard time sleeping. There are bright safety lights in the hallway that shine directly into the sleeping area. The bedding was also suspect. I highly recommend bringing a sleeping bag liner or similar if you're staying here. Aside from the sleeping part, we had a great stay due to the tasty food and welcoming host. I wish I had only positive things to say.

Review: Comfortable stay

The host Hidi is very experienced and has travelled Kumano Kodo often. He also likes fishing and Australia. We had very good food and were also the only guests staying here. Our room was spacious but it was not so clean. We found a lot of hair from previous guests on the floor. The bathroom was clean though all amenities are a bit old already. Hidi leaves you alone most of the time, I think he is more interested in the guest house business than in hearing stories from his guests. But still very friendly.

The hostel warden Hidesan is a very funny and helpful person. The stay with him was very refreshing.
