Kumano Guest House is a small lodging near the Kii-Tanabe station (less than 5 minutes walk) run by a friendly mother and son combination.  There are two Japanese style rooms on the second floor with tatami flooring and sliding doors. The first floor features a restaurant.  Guestrooms are non-smoking with air-conditioning, TV, and small communal refrigerator. There is a washing machine and balcony to hang clothes to dry.  Friendly, convenient, reasonable.

Guest House Takao is a beautifully reformed two-story Japanese home in a quite residential area ~10 min walk north of the JR Kii-Tanabe train station. 

There are three guestrooms: Two Japanese style guestrooms on the second floor, and one room on the first floor with a western style bunk bed. 

There is a communal kitchen, attached deck (perfect for relaxing!), and two private shower rooms. 

Other services include rental cycle and luggage storage. 

Guest House Takao is owned by a small, local real-estate company to showcase the added value that renovating older homes can bring to the community.

Tentsuku Guesthouse is a old reformed house one minute walk from the JR Kii-Tanabe Station.  It is a convenient and reasonably priced hostel.  Japanese style dormitory rooms are on the second floor and separated for male and female. There is a communal common room, kitchen, washing area, and bath.  Free wireless internet.  The rooftop balcony is great for drying clothes.  The Ajikoji entertainment district is nearby with many great restaurants.  Busses leave for Hongu and Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route next to the station. Please relax and get to know your fellow travellers in our guesthouse!

Miyoshiya is a budget Japanese style Ryokan inn near the Kii-Tanabe Station.  A convenience store, grocery store, and Ajikoji, a collection of restaurants and bars, are close by.  Miyoshiya Ryokan is a relaxed, reasonable accommodation run by Ken, a third generation owner who spent many years studying in Canada.  In the courtyard of these older buildings is a small shrine.  It has a retro feel to the facilities and has a mixed clientele of businessmen, long term guests, students, groups, and both domestic and international tourists.

Konyamachiya Townhouse

Konyamachiya is a restored Machiya townhouse near the mouth of the Aizu-gawa river in a local neighborhood of the rural Tanabe City. 

The two story wooden house is lovingly renovated, preserving the original atmosphere of the building, yet furnished with modern comforts.  The dark browns of the rough, original beams are a distinctive feature of the interior. 

Staying at Konyamachiya offers a private, relaxed, and authentic experience in a traditional Japanese house. 

This project is part of a cultural rejuvenation movement supported by a diversity of local associations and stakeholders.

the CUE "hoso backyard house"

The CUE Hoso Backyard House is a set of restored houses off the main road near the JR Kii-Tanabe train station in the maze of small alleys of the local Akijoji entertainment district busseling with Japanese Izakaya pubs.  This multi-purpose facility hosts a hostel, cafe (day), bar (night) and share house.  The guest rooms are Japanese style  with futon beds, sliding doors, and tatami mat flooring.  Facilities such as toilet, bath, and kitchen are shared.  The communal sitting area is lofty with views onto a small courtyard.  Mr. Nakamura, the son of a local construction store owner, spearheaded this community development project, bringing together a group of like-minded stakeholders, their mission is to use the CUE as a base to overcome social issues via this space of sharing and exchange.  It is managed by a collective called "Tamorisha": "Ta" is for "Tanabe", "mori" is from the verb "mamoru" or "preserve, and "sha" means "company".

The CUE Hoso Backyard House can only accept reservations 5months or less in advance.
