Very good English. The best of our four guides. Had the most free flowing and natural of conversations. Learned a lot. Stayed at the same guesthouse as us. So kind, so helpful. Got much needed cold medicine for one of us by talking with the store owner (she had it, but it wasn't out on the shelves!). Made sure we made it all the way to Hotel Urashima, and helped us navigate the ticket machine in Katsuura station :).

An excellent guide who kept us going through the somewhat arduous last day. He had lots of local historical information, was flexible about our pace and stops and kindly met us at our accommodation. We were self-guided for the other 3 days, so it was great to benefit from local knowledge on the last day.

Mako-san was the best!

Mako-san took us, a family with out-of-shape 50-year-olds, up the very big first slope very slowly and carefully, and made our whole 4-day walking trip possible! In addition to setting the pace for us, she told us great stories, pointed out the sights, and generally showed us that we can take it slow as we want, and still get to our destination by sundown. She also gave us practical advice on Days 2-4, found a later bus transfer for us so we could sleep in. She was the one who contacted Kumano Travel for us when our train was delayed, arranging for some extra help on arrival, so we could catch the train. Thank you Mako-san, you were the best :)

Deeply enriching experience

This was undoubtedly one of the best hiking and travel experiences of our lives - and we have done a lot of backpacking. Learning about Shinto and Buddhist traditions, immersed in gorgeous ecosystem and magical forest setting - and maybe even most of all - getting to spend time with the wonderful local guides and homestay hosts in the incredibly charming old villages along the Nakahechi route, was a profoundly enriching experience that the 3 of us will always keep close to our hearts.

Best picture ops and tour!

My guide, Shu San, led me into the shrine complex and Nachisan and ensured I saw all the things I was most interested in. There are 460 steps into the shrine complex so be ready for that--wear grippy shoes. I had plenty of time to see the falls, take photos, and buy some Omomori for my loved ones back home. A precious and meaningful memory.

Brilliant guide

The guide I had was excellent. She provided a lot of information about the things we saw on the way, she showed me how to pace myself with the trek and so on. She even took me into a local craftsman's workshop near the end of the hike. She also gave me instructions on how to find the trail for the next days hiking and went through my plans for the remainder of the trek to make sure I knew how to find my accommodation and what kind of things to look out for. It was a great way to start out the hike and, for someone with limited experience with hiking, it made for a great start to the adventure.

She made this tour very fun, educational, and enjoyable. She brought materials with her to explain all the histories and even the legend stories. This tour is one of my unforgettable trips in Japan. We also enjoyed this guide who walked with us for two days. A couple of thoughts on guides: - Would be great to have the same person for all days - He seemed to understand all the points in his guide book (which was a useful primer) but didn't necessarily know anything further on various areas (history, flora and fauna). - Communication was not all that easy given our lack of Japanese and his somewhat limited English.

Mako is a great tour guide!

Mako is a wonderful tour guide who taught us about the history of the Kumano Kodo. She even crawled through the small cave with us so we could be reborn! She was very enthusiastic about my becoming a Dual Pilgrim and made sure the other guides knew the importance of my getting to Grand Shrine Hongu Taisha. Also, I left something I purchased from a gift shop on the bus -- Mako and Kennis helped me get it back! They really went above and beyond.

Kennis is such a great tour guide -- she deserves more than 5 stars! She shared with us about the history, religion, and culture of the Kumano Kodo. She was very helpful in arranging the Dual Pilgrim certificate and ceremony at Grand Shrine Hongu Taisha. I had hoped to bang the Taiko drum at the shrine and she arranged that for me. She is also a photographer so she took some great pictures with my phone. I left some items purchased at the gift shop on the bus from the Grand Shrine to Yunomine Onsen -- and Kennis and Mako arranged to get it back from the bus company and delivered it to me before I left for the airport. Such amazing and kind service!!

Kennis was our guide on day 2 of the trek and it was our longest walk. She was a fantastic guide and great company (we shared stories about our lives and countries). Having 3 boys herself, she understood immediately how to connect with my 2 boys and was really fantastic with them from start to finish - answering their endless questions about things related and unrelated (!) to the walk, running ahead to keep pace with them and tending to all their needs. She carried a backpack, which we referred to as the magic bag as she pulled endless things out that we didn't know we needed - energy drinks (extra sugar for the kids), sweets, fans, plasters, wipes. She really kept us going and on track on this 14km walk and shared lots of knowledge about it's natural wonders and spiritual context. She is a special lady, and that day, in such intense heat, we were so grateful to have such an experienced guide.

Keiji has an interesting life story and my husband enjoyed talking to him about Japanese culture, politics and economy. He had lots of knowledge about nature and we really enjoyed eating his Umiboshi plums. Some more information about the Hongu Taisha shrine would have been welcome as we really just wandered around this large site, not knowing much about it's history.

Thank you so much Kennis! Very highly recommended!

nice tour

Customer orientated service with good care before and after our trip. We received a warm and friendly reminder on luggage storage the date before our tour. Our tour guide was well-prepared with detailed description. She also suggested some good restaurants for our lunch after our trip.

Kennis was instrumental in helping us!

Unfortunately, I contracted a stomach virus on day 2 of our hike and became very ill. Kennis used all of her expertise and kindness. She helped us get to a doctor when it appeared that I might be dehydrated. Without her expertise and kindness, our trip might have become a bad memory! She informed all of our accomodations hosts about our condition and helped me get better. I am very, very grateful to Kennis!

Kennis was fun, intelligent, and charming! She pointed out many interesting facts and details about the environment, culture and history as we hiked the beautiful Kumano Kodo! We learned about the flora and fauna of the area, such as the intriguing orange land crabs. She also explained the customs and rituals at every shrine. We learned so much from Kennis!

Shu was extremely knowledgeable, insightful, helpful and enjoyable as a guide on Kumano Kodo! I highly recommend a guide from Kumano Trek to accompany hikers/walkers on the trail. The knowledge and information imparted is invaluable and makes the entire experience much more meaningful. There is no way to get the knowledge and consideration from a guidebook or map! Thank you for your excellent service, attention to detail, helpfulness, wonderful conversation and teachings along the trail.

Truly immersed in Kumano Kodo with Shu

Since we laid eyes on Shu, we knew we got the real deal. Loved how he dressed in the traditional climbing attire! He's very strong walker and we are totally impressed the fact that he's 68 years old. He also read Haiku and Waka beautifully.

Kennis

Kennis set us up for a great day of walking with some group warm-up and flexibility exercises. It seemed she smiled all day and nothing was too much trouble. At Chikatsu Kennis helped us find shops and choose food for dinner. (not trivial in a Japanese supermarket) Great knowledge of the trail and pilgrim stories along the way. Thanks Kennis.

Kumano Kodo trek: Wonderful experience with our guide Shu

The difficult 2 day hike from Hongu to Nachisan was very rewarding. Our guide Shu was patient, knowledgeable, kind, caring and very professional. He guided our group of 5 ( ages 15 - 51) for the 2 day hike. I would recommend Shu to any traveller who wishes to enrich their trekking experience in this beautiful part of the world.

Booked a guide for Tajikiri to Chikatsuya.booking process and response was handled professionally and promptly, with all required details. The guide. 'Shu' was on time to pick up and provided various interesting tit-bits along the way.though the trail is quite heavily marked, Shu-sans little stories along the way, his note on the plants and birds certainly made for an interesting walk!
